David-I recently had both cataracts removed in both eyes with amazing results.Throughout the process, Siskiyou Eye Center/Ashland Surgery Center were courteous, attentive, cheerful, friendly and most important professional. I can't say enough good things about them. One problem persists. Going from glasses to none, I still instinctively reach for my glasses each morning. Diana- Both David and I are really happy with the cataract surgery Dr Ewing did for us. David V and Diana M

Over the years I have been extremely well impressed with Dr. Epstein - he is personally attentive, his work is consistently expert and very successful in solving the problems presented. I also appreciate the work he does for others outside our local community. His staff is competent, cheerful, careful, and everyone there thoroughly nice! This is how medical care should be given and experienced.

Dr. Epstein and staff exhibit the value ++ that all patients seek. His diagnosis of my condition saved my vision. I went to Dr. Epstein after consulting several other medical eye professionals who failed to correctly diagnose or treat my condition. Without Siskiyou Eye Center and Dr. Epstein, I would now likely be blind. They are great professional and super helpful.

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ewing. His care is of excellent quality and his explanations very thorough. The procedure itself, cataract extraction with intra-ocular lens implant, went like clockwork. I have absolute confidence in him. Tracy was totally on top of things related to surgical scheduling, pre-op details, and answering my questions. Dawn did my eye exam with expertise and a wonderfully friendly attitude. Marla is professional and absolutely a delightful person. It's risky mentioning names because I don't want to leave anyone out. Since I live in Dunsmuir, I elected to have the surgery at Mercy Mt. Shasta. My entire experience was splendid and more importantly to me, the surgical results are most gratifying. Even better than I'd hoped for. My gratitude and appreciation to all concerned.

I would recommend Siskiyou Eye care for medical/ophthalmology needs but not glasses/contacts (highest total optometry exam fees I've seen in Ashland, and I don't have vision insurance. Loftus or Decker are the better deals.).

I would, however advise caution ensuring accuracy in billing before the fact, and ensuring they assign doctors and procedures in line with your insurance, as applicable. If they make an error, communicate it in writing, be persistent, deal only with a billing manager and don't back down.

I had an acute eye condition and they were able to see me almost immediately, which was invaluable. I felt they spent sufficient time with me, took care to assess various aspects of eye health to make a full and correct diagnosis, were genuinely concerned and easygoing with patients. The condition in question improved quickly. The follow up comprised several visits, which can add up if you don't have medical insurance, or a vision plan that covers medical conditions. This was covered by my medical plan with a copay for each visit.

Unfortunately, the office staff made an error in either scheduling or billing, which resulted in charges my insurance would not cover. This involved a factor that was not medically necessary, and thus an unnecessary cost. To rectify this, I initially dealt with office staff but quickly asked to communicate with the appropriate manager. I made it clear from the start that it was their error, and referenced specific examples of where they erred, and how I had made it clear what my insurance covered and how I did not authorize services not covered by insurance without their request and my express consent. After several phone calls and letters across six months they dropped the charges in question.

I've trusted my eye care to the Siskiyou Eye Center for the past 25 years. The care I've received there has all been first class, always meeting and often exceeding my expectations. Three weeks ago Dr. Epstein performed cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant on my right eye, a 20 minute procedure under topical eye drop anesthesia and mild intravenous sedation. There was no pain and I was relaxed and comfortable. My wife was able to watch the entire procedure via closed circuit TV and received the DVD to take home. By that afternoon I experienced clear sharp vision. I couldn't believe how bright and colorful my world had become. Every day since my surgery I've gone for a walk to enjoy my new visual experience. It's likely the best vision I've ever had. What a thrill!

As a Family Physician I feel uniquely qualified to evaluate the Siskiyou Eye Center and Dr. Epstein. The staff is patient, friendly, helpful and highly professional. Dr. Epstein provides me with top notch professional care. He is at the top of his field in ophthalmology and is a caring personable individual. I feel comfortable and confident when under his care.

I can't think of a better place to receive eye care.

I have had nothing but excellent care and attention at the Siskiyou Eye Center under the care of Dr. William Epstein, whom I consider a thoroughgoing professional and caregiver. After having had terrible experiences at eye clinics in Medford, I finally returned to the Ashland office, where I was treated with consummate attention and respect. Reading the negative comments others have reported prompted me to give another side of the story. In total, I have been a patient at the eye center for fifteen years.

I am a self-confessed curmudgeon, ready to complain and yell when I don??t receive the attention my money and age command. After all, I am a customer, and I consider I write the paychecks for all personnel who work in a business I use. I have been given attention and the greatest respect any time I have entered the Siskiyou Eye Center. The place is always packed, but the wait has never been long, and I call anyone??s attention to the numbers of patients who are in the office any time one goes in. Certainly, that shows a real regard for a business, especially in this time of economic turmoil. If the business were unprofessional and didn??t have regard for its patients, it certainly would lose business. One only has to look at the thousands of records on display behind the counters to know this business is thriving.

The staff who works at the center is superior. One can run into problems occasionally in any large office, and I have had to wag a finger at times at one or two of the staff. The response to that has always been professional, and the people who work there are happy and accommodating. The responses to my calls and questions have always been timely and transparent. Certainly Medicare pays paltry funds to the doctors in our area. In spite of that, the Siskiyou Eye Center keeps an attractive and polite staff in an nicely appointed office with up-to-date equipment and comfortable surroundings.

My last association with the center was serious surgery at its surgery clinic. The work has lasted over several months, requiring numbers of pre- and post- operative appointments, two surgeries and lengthy care. I have no hesitation to say every step along the way was careful, conservative, assured and professional, led by the best of doctors, William Epstein. For the first time (because of Medicare and private insurance) I had to make an additional financial investment in my healthcare. I investigated the cost locally at several clinics, and I learned the charges at Siskiyou Eye Center were fair and reasonable. So while others report difficulties, I can report none with my experiences. Because of that, I highly recommend the Siskiyou Eye Center.

I have been a customer of Siskiyou Eye Center for 4 years. The doctors are excellent.
However, I have had to call them 3 times in the last week regarding a prescription for contacts that I wanted refilled. I was absolutely shocked by how rude they were.
If I had known I would get such a bad attitude after paying so much for an eye exam I would have taken my business elsewhere.

I agree with the other post that although there are experienced doctors at SEC, the overall professionalism of their front office and billing staff is so lacking that it's not worth going back again. Patients, be ware! At this point it's not so much the money, although I am semi-retired, as it is the principle of this issue. Their lack of timely billing, having unnecessary and incorrect procedures, their lack of responsiveness, dropping the ball, and being short and abrupt on several occasions is unacceptable. It's ironic that Siskiyou Eye Center advertises itself as a local clinic, with doctors and staff responsive to the needs of their patients.

I have lived in the Rogue Valley for over fifty years and have never had such an unpleasant and frustrating experience in a medical office before.

Unlike two other eye clinics in the area, Siskiyou Eye Clinic made no attempt to clarify their procedures and associated charges with my insurance when I went in initially for a contact lens fitting. I'd never worn contacts before. Staff was rude and suggested I call my insurance myself, which I did, in front of the billing clerk, asking questions of both parties to make sure I understood what to expect. I'd been warned by another teacher friend who'd had problems herself, but thought I was taking the necessary steps to being a conscientiously informed patient.

Before the office would release my prescription for contacts I had to go back three different times, a second time because they didn't have my kind in stock, and supposedly to be fitted properly. This was ironic since the young woman who "helped" train me in how to apply them mistakenly used the wrong instructions for hard contacts instead of the soft ones I'd requested. After I spent a frustrating twenty minutes poking my own eyes, she called in another assistant and she realized her mistake.

Although Dr. Englund tried to steer me toward their optometry center, I took the prescription and did cost comparisons for a year's supply. Siskiyou Eye Center was much higher than the price at the Walmart Eye Center so I filled it there. Staff was much more helpful and there was even a discount coupon they drew my attention to.

Because Siskiyou Eye Clinic did not bill my insurance for their services UNTIL FIVE WEEKS after my appointment, and because they billed separately for a second "fitting," the balance I had left to spend on the actual lenses from my insurance was inaccurate when I tried to fill my prescription (Walmart kindly checked on it for me.)

Over the next few months I spent three different times on the phone with Siskiyou Eye Center and my insurance to try and straighten the whole mess out-what was owed, for what services and the billing code. Although Siskiyou's billing clerk said he would take care of it, he never got back to me, and I continued to receive billing statements for almost a year.

Over a year later I was threatened with a collection agency. I immediately called the office and asked to talk with the billing department. I reviewed the situation with the billing department and asked that the additional charges ($100) be removed from my account. The clerk, Steve, said that he didn't have the authority and he would discuss it with Dr. Englund on the following Monday to let me know his decision. Once again, no one returned my call. In a subsequent conversation he admitted that it "fell through the cracks."

I called my insurance again to clarify what might be done to rebill under a different code or be eligible for reconsideration. Insurance did make an exception and made it eligible for partial remibursement on my remaining balance (applied $54 to the $100 balance.) I then wrote up a detailed three page letter to the head of the clinic, Dr. Epstein, offering to split the remaining $46 in an effort to finally resolve the issue. I personally drove to their office to deliver the letter. Although I'd asked for some sort of confirmation of its receipt, no one ever contacted me. A week later I called again and spent another five attempts with their office, eventually running a gauntlet of staff to talk with their billing manager, Bell. She denied my offer of compromise and made no appology for the lack of follow-through on their part.

I repeat my earlier message: Patients, be ware! At this point it's not so much the money, although I am semi-retired, as it is the principle of this issue. Their lack of timely billing, having unnecessary and incorrect procedures, their lack of responsiveness, dropping the ball, and being short and abrupt on several occasions is unacceptable. Although they are often reliable, I would strongly suggest not going to Siskiyou Eye Center in Yreka unless you get their charges in writing ahead of any exam. Although I did not need an eye exam this year, I was told by the OD Doctor there that even though I did not have eye care(Larson) that I should have my eyes checked and that the coverage that the procedures they would charge for fell under the category of medical. Then Siskiyou Eye Center turned around and submitted the procedure as optical, resulting in a cost to me of $100+. They have a monopoly in Yreka so can get away with these types of manipulations. It is better to travel to Medford or Redding if you want honesty and choice

Since SEC does not have a website or email address, I am using this venue to complain. If you go in to pick up glasses, and they tell you, "Just have a seat and one of the ladies will help you," make sure to check if both women are working with clients. I sat and waited 20 minutes while the sole glasses person was helping a client. She finally asked me if I was waiting for glasses. When I said, "Yes," she notified the other glasses person who was in her office out of sight. When I asked why she had not been notified that I was there, she said, "A message was sent to my computer (which was sitting there on her outside desk), but I was in my office." If you run into this situation, request that the front desk receptionist "buzz" the other person who is sitting there in her office out of sight. This will save you at least a 20 minute.

The Siskiyou Eye Center has a great selection
of glasses and contacts. I got a great eye
exam and got my contacts in record time.
I was amazed as it usually takes so long
when you are living in a little town like
Ashland.
