However, there is a beautiful Cody's on 4th Street staffed with friendly, knowledgeable folks. Support your local independent bookstore! They offer best sellers, classics, children's books, gifts and if you can't find what you're looking for, they'll order it for you. They are located close to Peet's, so you can have a yummy Freddo or getta cuppa @ Bette's. The Ark for toys, Miki's for handmade paper, and much, MUCH more....

I am an avid reader so Cody's is the best and worst place for me. You can find almost any book at Cody's, but the best part is the bargain FLOOR. The entire second floor is devoted to bargain books. So you end up picking out a lot of good books and spending a whole lot of money total. It's a great store for anybody building up their own library. And whatever they don't have, the workers are all more than willing to refer you to another local bookstore or order your book for you.

I remember going here to get books signed (one was Madeline Albrights!) and meet big people! They have a good selection of bargain books for cheap prices! But it's an okay selection of new books (though not many of the newer ones seemed to be on sale) but a nice place to go and hang out and read.

this is the kind of bookstore store you can spend an entire day perusing their exellent collection. and please ... once you do found your favorite ... buy it here! there have been reports of people using the amazing service that Cody provides and then go online to purchuase the book for $2 cheaper at some online store. please do not do this. unless you want to directly contribute to the destuction of a charming locally-owned business ... the kind that has become so rare in our country .

Compared to other places in Berkeley, this place is neither all that cheap or all that amazing. It doesn't really compete with other places in being cheaper and it doesn't provide a wider selection that other nearby stores. However, in its defense it probably will have that selection you're looking for. Unfortunately nothing really sets this store apart from other options.

This place is huge! Cody's is one of the best independent bookstores in the bay area. They have everything, from obscure stuff to best sellers. They also have a really big selection of magazines too.

Cody's is a great alternative to other chain bookstores. They have a selection that rivals that of stores like Borders or Barnes & Noble. The store is well organized, by subject, and shelves are kept tidy. They carry all genres of books, and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful -- so be sure to seek them out if you're looking for something special. They also have an awesome sale section where you can find great books for even greater prices. And there's a separate section of the store filled with magazines. They probably have every magazine you can imagine, and some you never would have thought existed. They occasionally have authors and guest speakers at their store for book signings and other events. They're freem but they can get very crowded.

At this stage in my life, I'm often shopping for children's books either for my kid or for one of the countless kids that we now know. While the collection of children's books is definitely smaller at the 4th St store it's easy to shop with my 1-yr old there because he can spend an endless amount of time arranging and rearranging the Peewee Herman-like kids' furniture. With the kid busy, mom can shop in peace. I can always find something I want to buy here.

The location of this bookstore is perfect. It's close to the campus and is on one of the most used streets in Berkeley. The books are in excellent condition and affordable for students on a budget. Events take place at this bookstore every few weeks or so, though there is a donation it is well worth it. Cody's is two stories and on the upper level there are discounted books as well as novels in different languages.

When famous authors stop in to Berkeley, Cody's is the usually the place they go. Once you stop in, you'll see why. It's a great store, with an amazing selection and a friendly staff who read more than you do and know the store well. They also have a good magazine selction, and they're open until 10 most nights. The special order service is pretty quick, often faster than Amazon. Along with their 4th St. location, Cody's is easily the best all-new bookstore around.

PROS: Selection, staff
CONS: Telegraph Ave. parking, etc.

Wow! Codys is a great non-corporate bookstore. Yes, Codys does a couple of author events per week, and they offer a number of hard-to-find magazines, and yes they have journals & gifts & calendars & bookmarks and all the other paraphernalia, but the strength of Codys is their selection of new books. Generally, if its a current print, you can find it at Codys (if you cant find it, theyll be happy to order it for you).

Books spread across two floors of retail space. Fiction, literate, social studies, games & sports, local travel, art & photo books, cookbooks and more. It seems that every subject area under the sun has its own little section at Codys.

Then there is the sidewalk atrium with a broad selection of magazines, both mainstream and focused-interest. If what youre looking for are fashion or lifestlye magazines, Barnes & Noble will easily fill your needs. If you have broader interests, come to Codys. In addition to the mainstream mags, at Codys youll also find social critique, various hobby magazines, LBGT, & alternative culture magazines, as well as foreign language magazines. A small selection of comics and zines are also carried at Codys.

For those that are looking for a bargain, on the second floor, Codys offers its discount and remaindered books (as well as hosting author readings and events). Although I havent attended any of them myself (not my interest), Codys offers frequent author reading & events, a few every week, drawing some big-name authors. Over the last couple of years, theyve hosted Neil Gaiman and Bill Clinton.

PROS: hard-to-find magazines, author readings & events

Cody's, like Moe's, is a longstanding Berkeley institution, still influenced by the founder whose name it bears.

Cody's is the second-best site of reader appearances in the East Bay (after Black Oaks). It has the largest inventory of books, with a staff noticeably more helpful and friendly than the staffs of Moe's and Black Oaks. They are happy to order anything for a customer, but these days most customers are quite able to special order for themselves.

PROS: large inventory
CONS: bookstores are becoming obsolete?

Cody's is by far the largest independent bookstore I've seen in the state, and I've only seen its like in the form of Powell's in Portland, OR. It continues its long history of opposition to censorship and flexible special-ordering. Although its prices are not the cheapest in town, you'll feel good for supporting a community fixture.

Cody's book is great, it is one of the best bookstores that I've been to. Cody's offers a great collection of books, of all types, and they have knowledgeable booksellers who can assist you in making your purchase. If you love reading books or just browsing books, you must go to Cody's book at least once, you will be impressed. Cody's books is what all bookstores should be, reasonable prices, great selection, and very knowledgable and courteous workers.
