I recently did an "easy" re-fi with RCU and I can say that it was the WORST experience ever. I have purchased multiple homes and re-financed various mortgages with other financial institutions without any difficulties. After reading the other reviews about RCU, I see that I am not the only one who experienced this institution as incompetent, blaming and rude. And yes NO apologies for their mistakes and rude behavior. My easy re-fi took 10 weeks. The loan officer was unresponsive. I only got updates when I inititiated, and when I voiced my frustration with their incompetence, I was told it was my fault in a condescending and rude manner. Luckily, I have no other accounts with them and plan to NEVER to set foot in RCU again. What a joke of a financial institution.
Upate at 12/22/12 - Continuted horrible service. The loan originator at the Osceola branch messed up my escrow options and forced me to spend a day trying to straighten it out. I called her and left a message insisting on a call back and all I got was an email that said - "from my trails of voicemails it looks like you have everything straightened out. Have a merry Christmas." Seriously!!!! No apologies for her idiotic mistake. My mortgage payment will increase by $150 in March to make up for the mistakes made in processing the loan! I plead with anyone who wishes to keep your sanity. DO NOT EVER ORIGINATE A HOME LOAN AT THE OSCEOLA ROYAL CREDIT UNION!!!

When I first joined RCU, the company's priority seemed to be taking care of the customer. Over the last few years it appears profits have become their number one priority and customers are a dime a dozen.

As far as professionalism...I honestly don't believe the majority of RCU employees know the meaning of the word.

Case in point - I was recently making a deposit in the drive up lane at one of the Eau Claire branches. (Keep in mind here, typically I can hear a teller's conversation with a customer loud and clear from three to four lanes from my vehicle.) Before the rep sent out my deposit slip, she made a point to inform me over the loud speaker that the payment on my vehicle loan was past due.

I responded that it most certainly was not past due as I had made the payment two days before the due date. She told me it showed past due and I'd have to take it up with member services. (So apparently a rep can broadcast to anyone within earshot as to the status of my loan, but doesn't have the ability to check into my dispute or remedy the situation).

When I got back to my shop I called RCU. I was told the payment was past due - and to my shock - was also told it was my wife's fault.

When I questioned how making my payment before the due date equates to being past due, AND is the fault of my wife, I was told that I'd need to talk to my wife about it. I then was asked by the rep, "Do you TALK to your wife?"

Long story short, after several calls, phone transfers, returned calls, and almost an hour in total on the phone I was finally told RCU had made a mistake and inadvertently created two invoices that month. Since the duplicate invoice hadn't been paid it was showing my vehicle loan as being past due.

There was no apology for the mistake they made, the frustration they had caused, the unprofessional comment directed toward my wife, the unwarranted embarrassment I was subjected to at the drive in lane, or for the time I wasted on the phone with Member Services.

....and this is only one incident of several negative experiences I have had with RCU as of late.

Five years ago I would have recommended RCU to anyone looking for a customer friendly financial institution. Today - I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.

I have worked with RCU for over 5 years. They are absolutely terrible. I studied abroad while in college, where it was recommended to use your home credit union/ bank to store your funds and to withdraw them from an ATM. I called RCU to inform them where I would be studying. Well, the first time I tried to use my ATM card abroad it was denied. Turns out that they had blacklisted the country I was living in without notifying me. Out of 1,000 students, I was the ONLY one who could not access their funds. So RCU left me in a foreign country with NO money. Only after days of calling them (my phone charges were absolutely ridiculous from being put on hold and transferred), did they agree to transfer my money via Western Union. So then I had to get to a Western Union. Which in a foreign country is not easy. Recently, I had a 27 cent overdraft in my checking account, which they charged me $30 to cover. So less than a month later they reported this to a credit agency. Even more shady, as far as I can tell they closed all of my accounts and kept the $5 I was required to have in my savings account to keep it open. This is after I had already paid back the money I owed them in full! They may be a local credit agency but you wouldn't know it. They act just as shady as AIG or any other big bank. Do not do business with them.

Not sure where they come from or how on Earth RCU gets any positive review. Perhaps the offices outside Eau Claire are different; but, as a man who has worked customer service and sales for over 12 years, my short lived experience at RCU was hands down one of the worst customer service experiences ever. Knowledgeable staff? Not a chance. I dropped out of college after one semester and can guarantee my personal library has made me more suited for practically any entry to mid level position at RCU than many, if not most, of their current employees. A fake smile and a decent wardrobe will never make up for failure to do your homework. RCU is a regional bank with a big bank view of customers, "We don't need you, thanks for buying into our marketing program." RCU? Good riddance.

4 1/2 out of 5

The Member Service department is very helpful and knowledgeable. The downsides lie in the fact that as said in a previous review, a high turnover rate in the offices. This is somewhat expected due to the fact that RCU hires a lot of college students. This is more noticeable in a college town such as Eau Claire. In the Chippewa Falls, Colby, Rice Lake, and Whitehall offices for example there is less turnover, therefore more accuracy.

Their services are far superior to that of other financials. Their electronic services are free and they offer very competitive interest rates. Overall the credit union is well-run yet there is a potential problem with the high turnover in the teller position which leads to inaccuracies.

PROS: Member Service
CONS: high turnover rate in teller positions

I have actually closed out my account with this place and gone to another bank recently. I have never seen the same employee more than 3 times which leaves me to believe they have a large turnover. The last time I went to RCU they had someone else's account tied in with mine making my account -$342. Spent 15 minutes on the phone with customer service to verify my social # and get this straightened out. Not good!

PROS: hours
CONS: poor customer service
