I find it EXTREMELY hard to believe what some of these negative reviews are saying (a snake? really? I think your eyes are turning brown). I've been going to Sumo Boy since the place opened, and I've never had a single bad experience. The food has always been good, and the service has *always* been friendly. My only possible "complaint" about the place is that the rolls are kind of small compared to a lot of other sushi joints around the Cleveland area -- however, the prices at Sumo Boy are also much lower than most of those places.

As an avid sushi eater, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a nearby, affordable and welcoming experience.

The service was rude, the portions were very small* for the price, the seaweed was crunchy and papery and food was overall poor quality. If you want to treat yourself to good sushi, make the extra trip downtown. This place was quite a let-down.

My wife and I ate there 2/2/09. I finished my food but my wife took half of hers home. The next day I put the food on a plate to heat it in the microwave and while I started eating it a found a baby snake. Yes, a baby snake with its tounge sticking out. I threw up and showed my wife who started to get sick. I plan on calling the health dept. first thing in the morning. You are taking a chance when you eat here. Beware.

My husband and I frequently go to Sumo Boy. We love this place! I think the decor could use some updating but other then that, foods always been fresh, place is clean, nice people!

I was just there, yesterday and while I have had better sushi, this place is still one of my favorites. The sushi was very fresh, I ordered a large amount and every item was very fresh tasting and looking. The prices were about average for any place I have ever been and everyone was very friendly to me. For me Sumo Boy is always like this, a great experience.

With other types of food you can get away with it not being fresh but with Sushi fresh is not only a must but it can be dangerous if it is not. I have found that the quality and portion size has decreased since this restaurant had opened. The lack of quality has been reflected in the reduction in customers returning. The owner Beril (not sure of spelling) has treated her customers nastily when they have complained about the quality and freshness. She has yelled and rudely told them not to come back. Is this the type of restaurant customers need to frequent? It is about time that they step aside and let a real Sushi restaurant open up in Mentor. I will never go back and will only take my business to a restaurant that wants customers to return.

Since it opened four years ago, this restaurant has been in decline. Others must feel the same way...the last time we were there, we were the only table for lunch! This place used to be crowded...not anymore! The portions are shrinking, the quality has gone down, prices keep rising, and the service is horrible! The owner/manager (not sure which she is. she's the long-haired korean lady) can be very rude and unfriendly. It's almost as if she's bipolar...overly sweet one day, cold as ice the next. We used to go there all the time for the lunch special, but the last few time have been horrible. The salad dressing has been watery and runny. The salad itself appeared old, wilted and some pieces were brown. The sushi isn't always fresh. Sometimes it smells fishy. And the rolls have gotten really small. We also always order edamame before our sushi, and that too is shrinking in portion size. This place used to be a great place for lunch, but it's not worth it anymore. I wouldn't go there if I were you!

I went to Sumo Boy for the first time on 2/2/08. I had the fried oysters and Japanese Apple Pie. Excellent! The Japanese Apple Pie was the best sushi I've ever had. Incredible tasting...

Great place to eat...lunch & dinner!

I went to Sumo Boy in Mentor with my 15 year old daughter tonight to celebrate her straight A's!!! The selections were plentiful and the food was fantastic!!! The service was a little bit slow tonight - my salad was forgotten and no sugar was offered with our tea. Besides that - I would go there again and again. I'm sure my 13 year old son will want to go too!!

My husband and I just tried Sumo Boy for the first time as it had come recommended by friends. We don't eat sushi often enough and this place is an excellent find! Almost every selection is paired with a picture which was nice since we had never been there and new to sushi.

I had a cooked slamon and avocado wrapped in seaweed with rice(6 pieces for $4.25) and he had Sumo Boy #4 which consisted of a mushroom soup (great!) salad, basic salmon (3 pieces) and tuna (3 pieces) slices on top of white rice combined with seaweed tuna and salmon (6 pieces) for $11. All of the items we ate were fresh (no fishy taste) and displayed nicely. There are numerous choices, cooked fish items too. The staff is attentative (we had lunch and were the only ones there). The building is very clean and nicely decorated.

The prices are more than reasonable. Just be careful in ordering, you get full more quickly than you'd like! We'll definately be back soon.

It's hard to be a sushi fanatic and not go broke. As a long time customer at Otani in Mayfield I was overjoyed to discover a sushi restaurant in Lake County. Not only is the service and food quality top notch, the prices are so much more reasonable than the more known Japanese restaurants around town. I highly recommend trying the Rock N Roll futo maki, consisting of crispy tempura, tuna, salmon and yellowtail. Outstanding!

Sumo Boy has become one of my favorite sushi houses in town. It's zen like atmosphere and warm service has left me to be one of their weekly customers. Their Japanese cuisine and creative art of sushi has become a new hit in Mentor.
