the best museum in San Francisco

by Stephanie F. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 802

I truely enjoy the Legion of Honor. I have been going here for years. Their Monet exhibit was spectacular. They have a very nice staff working for them. They can answer just about any questions you have about the artwork.

A very honorable musem

by Rebecca H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,020

I went here to see the Monet exhibit and it was superb. It was a great opportunity to see classy art because Monet's work only comes to America every few decades. They have great student discounts that give young people a good incentive to go.

PROS: Great art, great prices.
CONS: They close very early so it's a little inconvenient.

Great arts right near by

by Olggie Z. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,303

I never knew about this place until friends from Los Angeles came over and told me they wanted to go since they had heard great things about it. An boy, it did not disappoint. It focuses on more of the classical art work which is what really separates this museum from all the others in San francisco. Also the view was just specatacular, their location must cost a lot of $$$. Stop by the cafe and get some yummy treats (why is it that you remember a museum's cafe the most:)?) Overall great couple of hours.

Legion of Honor

by Sibyl G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,407

This museum is as much about the art as it is about the view. If you can get all the way up here on Muni it is well worth the ride to see gorgeous views of the city, bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Also, they have some nice pictures...it is free on Tuesdays. Definitely visit and see Monet's Waterlilys and the largest collection of Rodin sculpture in the world. This place integrates all the arts, not just painting. It is really cool.

great

by Shaun R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,707

My art history teacher told us that there are no great works of art in the Bay area, you have to go to New York for that stuff, but the closest second, he felt was the Legion of Honor. This place has a great permanent collection as well as really splendid traveling shows. I went ther on a Satrurday once though and that was a mistake, very crowded. The other crowded day is the free day which I belive is Tuesday. GO!

This is the perfect place for a musuem to be located...right next to the Golden Gate Bridge. the view is amazing. I love the Legion of Honor. I like it when they feature special atrists in their time area. Such rich culture. You never know what to expect whenyou visit this museum. It always has such beautifil art. And the gift shop is not too pricey compared to some. Definitely one of the best places in the city.

Beautiful, breathtaking, and awesome

by Gavin W. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,876

This is my favorite museum in San Francisco. The Legion of Honor museum houses the more classical work as opposed to the modern art of the SFMOMA. The building itself is a reproduction of a building in france, and in the courtyard is an inspiring reproduction of Rodin's "The Thinker." In fact, the entire collection of Rodin's sculptures that are housed in the Legion are fantastic. They have a beautiful bust of Victor Hugo, some of his works of hands, and many others. The paintings are great, and span from medieval to impressionistic. It's sort of a task to get there, but the drive is amazing, and you'll love it when you do.

What a beautiful place!

by Molly B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 633

This is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. The grounds are beautifully kept. The gift shop has many unique items. We really like taking a picnic with us when we go here. It's definitely a place to bring out of town guests! Afterwards you can drive along great highway and check out the beach or run over to golden gate park. .

Amazing Museum!!

by Corey F. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,944

Beautiful. Amazing. A great way to spend your afternoon. The Legion of Honor is at the top of a hill overlooking S.F. and the GG Bridge. The Thinker is in the entrance. The art is beautifully displayed. The cafe is yummy and the gift store a treasure chest.
