USAA only received one star because it is not possible to give them less. USAA tries to tell everyone that they are a Federal Savings Bank that caters to military, former military and those who support the military. Up until recently I fully believed that this was the case. I have had USAA since I was about 16 years old, through my fathers service to our great country I was ??fortunate? enough to be able to get USAA membership. Then once I joined the military I continued to use USAA. I am now out of the military, and contracting for the U.S. military in Afghanistan. I have been in Afghanistan now for 14months. I applied for a home loan through USAA and was approved immediately. I followed all of USAA??s mortgage services representative??s instructions (Sandra Tessitore). I had 45 days from the day the offer was submitted and all of my paper work was filed out, for Sandra to fill me in on any issues that might arise. Several times I emailed her with questions only to receive no reply for several days, or until I got sick of waiting for an email and called her directly. Seven days before I was supposed to close on my house Sandra notifies me that since I am a contractor, I need a letter from my company stating that they will keep me on contract for three years no matter what, and that my pay will stay the exact same ($145k a year). I asked her why it needed to remain 145K when the loan I am going for was only 220k borrowed?her answer that??s what the underwriter wants. No company can guarantee employment for three years and these conniving criminals know it. So due to USAA, and Sandra Tessitore, I am out $2,000 dollars earnest money, the fees they charged to go through this entire process (with the extra points I bought around $600), probably around 20 hours of my times on the phone with them, oh yeah and did I forget to mention a house. USAA is not about helping military and former military get fair deals, they are all about making the quick buck and then dumping you in the trash like last weeks leftovers. If USAA would have told me these ridiculous ??regulations? up front I could have had the time to go to a lender that can give loans to those who serve our country overseas and not the thieves at USAA. Once I am back in the states, able to go into reputable bank and insurance company, I will be getting rid of my USAA Performance First Savings Account, Normal Savings Account, Checking Account, Life Insurance, Home Insurance, Car Insurance, and Credit Card. USAA will not care about this because they have thousands of members who are unaware of their crooked practices. I just hope that this review will help fellow contracts know to go through another lender and not make the mistake I did by trusting USAA.
USAA has been affiliated with the military for years. As a officers son I have watched it change over the years. While the insurance is great USAA bank and Credit Cards are not good at customer service and do not value their customers. They hold periodically a credit card payment even with electronic banking for 7 days. I found this out after calling customer service and she said because of fraud periodically USAA holds a payment as they can't trust members and have lost so much money,. A person could run up the bill. Secondly, she said it is a matter of trust which tells me they don't trust their members and I have been there 20 years. I was shocked. Also, the banking at USAA is known to hold funds too. I had a backup coverage on my account and they held funds causing a debit to run twice in less than a 24 hour period and never paid it until the funds cleared. They take debits first deposits last. I am ultra concerned but the insurance and life insurance part are great. I am not sure what is going on but it is scary. This is a honest evaluation and of note USAA used to be for officers only. Because they left they opened it up. It should have been open in the first place. Now I am afraid our troops overseas are having sever problems and not saying anything. Food for thought. Shocked and Stunned.
I have been a member of USAA since 1968. Last month they came up with a new Credit Card scam that is hurting me financially.
Watch out Military members choosing USAA Credit Cards: My latest tangle with USAA Credit Card Services was with Andrea in "Executive Resolutions". I called on Tuesday June 14, 2011 to find out why my available credit did not reflect a recent $319.00 payment made on June 8, 2011 which cleared my local checking account on June 9, 2011. I thought there was an error--but I was informed that my payment would not be credited to my Credit Card until Midnight June 16, 2011.
I was told that this practice of holding onto your payments for at least 7 days could and does happen to just about everyone. Isn't that bank fraud? It seems that in my case USAA used my $319 for whatever purposes they chose (maybe an executive lunch?).
Today, my available credit is what it should have been 7 days ago. So watch out! USAA is using payments to their own advantage instead of doing the ethical thing of crediting your account when the money is received. By the way, no notice of this policy came my way and if you multiply my transaction by thousands of customers, what the heck kind of bank is that.
Even though their ads seem friendly, their financial people seem to be less than honest in favor of the bottom line. Thanks for the bailout and riding on the backs of our military both veterans and active duty. Just another injustice to the "common" people
This month, I paid $50.00 early using their on line bill payer site on 6/30/2011 and it shows that they received it 6/30/2011--but they will not credit the payment to my available credit. It has been 8 days and I wonder what the heck they are fraudulently using my money for!!!
I'm not sure what has happened with some of the whiners on this board, but I guess most gripe boards get just that...gripes. My thinking is that the insurance company was doing their job, and weeding out fraudulent or questionable claims. Folks, insurance companies aren't sugar daddies. If you have a legit loss, they pay. If you submit a bogus claim, or one that smells bogus, they'll investigate. If their investigation unearths suspicions, chances are you won't be getting a check.
Everyone on here is telling a story from their perspective (including me). Of course everyone is going to spin it to their benefit.
There's a 99 percent chance that if these folks got denied, it was for a reason.
I have never had a problem with USAA customer service, or with claims. We've had claims, and they have always paid because the claims were always legit.
We have been USAA members for 38 years. It would have been 48 years except during my enlisted air force service they allowed only warrant and commissioned officers to join. The first thing I did after I got my gold bar was to sign up with USAA. and I'm glad I did.
We've had to use our auto and homeowners insurance a number of times and always received excellent service. Back in 2008 I was on a lonely strip of road just south of Temple, Texas, and it was about 2:00 A.M.. Suddenly a large tree jumped onto the road and hit my car. I had my cell phone so I called USAA.
The helpful lady made me feel better by calling me captain. They always use your rank even though no one else does. (tongue in cheek) She called my wife and sent the police, EMS and an auto wrecker right out to take care of me. I think that's pretty good service.
I don't know if their rates are good; I've never considered switching companies. But when I've been contacted by other companies and tell them whom I'm with they just thank me and hang up.
USAA's military members receive yearly refund checks based on how well the company did that year plus deposit money in your subscriber's savings account. I've now got about $9,000 in my account. This money is a portion of the company's earnings. former USAF Capt.
2 yrs ago, I set up auto bill pay, and then went on tour for 2 months. When I got back, I opened a letter saying my ins was canceled due to non payment. USAA even admitted that it was their fault that the rep entered my bank info incorrectly resulting in the lapse in coverage, but it wasn't enough...my rates rised $200!
the last straw? cut and paste from my bbb complaint:
repeated calls for assistance ignored. Services as insurance company neglected.
My car was broken into on 10/29, leaving a broken out passenger window, and no security for my vehicle from intruders and inclement weather. I filed a claim on 10/30 which was ignored. No claims adjuster called me that day, and my car was exposed to the rain and intruders over the weekend (Halloween weekend). Still no calls on Monday 11/2, so I called and filed the claim AGAIN. Following that, i escalated to express my concerns with a manager who then asked me to repeat all the info pertaining to my claim and now challeged my personal property loss. I sent documentation, had to repeat myself numerous times to several different reps and departments.
On multiple occasions, I have claims adjusters asking me how much damages are for, who's paying for them, etc...all things I pay full coverage for in order for them to take care of these things.
I have been trying to get a hold of my claims adjuster since Monday, and have not had any help. Every time I talk to a rep, they forward me to her voicemail.
Living on west coast time, it is poor service they are offering at a high premium that their office hours are closed by 2pm pacific coast time.

I have filed a claim with the insurance company for my property stolen out of my apartment. The claim has been in the works since August 15th 2009. I have had many things that needed to be given to USAA including value of items stolen, length of ownership and replacement costs. My father's ring that was given to me in his death was included in this list to include a total of approximately $16,000 in electronics and other personal property. This process has been grueling. I have yet to receive any decision on the payout of my claim, the claim is still pending... I hope for the best, as I have been a customer for nearly 10 years and USAA has been nothing but great. I bank, have loans, insurance (car and property) and several other products from USAA. I will keep ya posted!

I have been with USAA for over 10 years. I'm a former Army Captain that was sold on the USAA one shop stop. Until about a month ago I carried Life insurance, Wifes life insurance, vehicles insurance, renters insurance, valuable property insurance, Checking, savings, mutual funds, investments, loans, and a few other misc services. I as well as these other reviews were fooled by USAA "customer service". I'll admit, they are sweet on the phone. However, after hurricane Ike I had a vehicle stolen. That was September almost 5 months ago, today finally on a $15,000 dollar claim they have granted me $250 and denied the rest.
10 Years I have been with this company, hundreds of referrals and good words about them, but when it came down to executing on their promise - nothing.
I caution two things, don't purchase from a crook because he is nice to you, and you get what you pay for.

If you qualify for USAA insurance, there is no other rational choice of insurance companies. For service, cost, reliability, and intelligence when handling a claim, no other company comes close. I hate insurance. I hate the idea of paying for something I hope does not happen. However, it is a necessity for a careful person. USAA is the way to go.
Every time we get a telemarketing call about insurance, the second we tell them we are with USAA the telemarketer immediately thanks us and tells us we have the best insurance already.
USAA's rates are the lowest.
Their customer service is the best.
Claims are handled quickly and without hassle.
If you can get insurance through them, do it. You will be so pleased that you will never consider another insurance provider ever again!
We have our auto, boat, motorcycle and homeowners insurance with USAA.
We've had homeowners and auto insurance with USAA for over 10 years. The customer service reps are polite, friendly, and knowledgeable about their products. Claims are handled quickly with no hassles. They automatically offer to help with other accounts (changing addresses, for example). Their rates are very competitive. We wouldn't consider another insurer at any price.
USAA offers wonderful experienced customer service reps. Offering great policies for renters insurance. Not only low cost policies but they also offer automatic withdrawl from Checking or Savings Accounts for your convience
PROS: Super Cheap Renters Insurance for Military personel
CONS: Not enough locations, hold time is a bit lengthly
We have been with USAA insurance for nearly 20 years now and we will never use another insurance company. They are wonderful. They have great low rates, and wonderful customer service. They also give out goodies now and then such as Operation Iraqi Freedom coins, or PROUD SPOUSE magnets for cars for the military wives. USAA is a wonderful company. I highly recommend them to any military family.
