I'm glad to read these reviews because I thought I was the only one that felt the way I did. These women are...professional at best. I had to call several times and leave a few messages before I decided to just walk in and make my first appointment. When you walk in, you feel like you're crashing a private party-I half expected someone to ask me what I was doing there.
I've been dealing w/the same stylist for my type of locks and the price is GOOD compared to what I'm used to, but the woman is so COLD. I tried crackin' some jokes, starting a conversation, but her responses are always short. They have their customers that they're real friendly with, but overall, I notice they treat most people like they just couldn't care whether you came in or not.
I had to reschedule and I called the salon (I don't have her cell), and they NEVER gave her the message, no matter how many times I called.
Once I sit in the chair, I expect my hairdresser to at least talk to me about my HAIR! If I don't ask a question, she doesn't comment/give me advice...nothing.
Like I said, the price is right and the quality is OK. I just have to determine whether I want to pay more for someone who will treat me like a valued customer.

When I initially called and left a message, I did not get a return call - so I called again and left another message. They did get back to me; they booked my appt.; they did a great job; I am a return customer. I love the hair wash that I get. They are not "rough" with your head and hair. They can do a free-style or whatever style you request. They are all about natural hair care.

Uh, where do I begin?

When I first went to Strandz, one of the lovely ladies who worked there showed me a book of pictures to choose what I would like. (Yes, you must go there because they RARELY pick up the phone. Busy, I suppose.) There wasn't much in the book to choose from but I scheduled an appointment anyway. Surprisingly, I was able to make one for the same week due to multiple cancellations (was that a sign that I ignored? Shudder.).

Long story short, I got in the stylist's chair (very sweet young lady, by the way) and I tried to describe that I wanted twists but in a style. As I described the style, she asked, "Did you look in the book?" I think if it's not in the book, it is practically impossible. Also, my hair is in the more curly than kinky; I told the stylist it may be best to twist it while wet instead of blow drying it straight. She didn't listen to me. Having said that, when she was done, I had thin, straight twists all over my head with absolutely no style. I appreciate her taking the time to work so meticulously, however, I did not want to look like I was ready for a WNBA game.

Another stylist gave me ideas to make my hair more poofy (mousse, take a shower without covering my hair, etc.) but it's so not going to work.

Bottom line is this: if you have seriously kinky hair or locs (and you don't want to venture into Brooklyn to get your hair done), this is most likely the spot for you. If you have in between hair (more curly/wavy than kinky), keep looking.

I have heard great things about Strandz. However, they have yet to return any of my phone calls to make an appointment. I guess I have to do business elsewhere.

They do good, quality, solid work. You'll be pleased with the results. But they don't return phone calls -- repeatedly. Also, this is not the place you go to be pampered. This is a clean, pleasant, get-it-done salon.

My friend is related to the owner of Strandz. They are cousins. She has indicated to me that when they say they are booked, it's not really true. It's a technique they use to force customers to book appointments and keep them. So when you leave they want you to actually book an appointment on the schedule so they can guarantee the money. But if you do and then you have to cancel the appointment that you booked they will then block you out to teach you a lesson. The lesson being this...you better keep your appointment and keep there money coming on schedule or they will not book you another appointment for a long long time. That almost makes it seem like they are treating customers like children. It's as though they are spanking them to teach them a lesson. How rude. And no that isn't customer friendly either.

I agree with one of the other posters in the regard that the women at Strandz definately need to improve tremendously on the customer service provided. Customer service should not be only judged by the final product (which in this case is the clients hair) Customer service starts from the moment the first attempt of contact is made. Not being able to reach anyone in the shop by phone, and never having messages returned is a sign of unprofessionalism and bad business. As shop owners or stylists you should never feel your business or client base is to big to not return the call of loyal or potential clientelle. It is the clients who have grown your business. It took me about 4-5 months to get my first appointment and yes they did do a nice job, but I wouldn't expect anything less because they are quite pricey. Also it doesn't matter how fabulous your hair may look if you are only able to get sporatic appointments because according to Strandz they always "so called" booked. It does seem as though they do not like to take new customers and if that is infact the case then they shouldn't waste peoples time and say that straight up. Money can be spent anywhere and I am sure that there are other natural hair care stylists who do just as good of a job if not better. I would NOT recommend this salon to anyone.

Based on reviews I read, Strandz sounded on the up-and-up...like a real, professional and progressive shop. I was wrong! When I initially went in person to make my appointment, I had to start the conversation instead of someone asking, "Can I help you?" Made the appointment. Called to speak with the person who was to do my hair a day in advance. No answer. When I got there the next morning, another woman with a customer says, the woman who was scheduled to do my hair is not there. I'm like, "WHAT?!!!" (I've been growing my natural hair for two years--it needs attention!) When I asked about re-scheduling the woman was nonchalant...to the point of not even answering. I said, "Well, can I reschedule?" She looked in the appointment book and said nothing was available, I'd have to call for an appointment. Seemed as if they didn't want any new customers. I took the card and left. How's that for service? I would never, ever recommend anyone to Strandz. Their service and overall demeanor as a professional business is despicable. Irregardless of how good their work is, you can't put a price on good customer service. These sistas need some sensitivity and congeniality training..and quick.

This salon has been recognized in many hair magazines and their stylists are highly qualified, highly professional. They specialize in styling natural black hair. They do twists, locs, sister locs, blow outs, corn rows, etc. The stylists are very versatile and can do many different types of creative natural styles. They are expensive but it's worth it...you pay for the good service.

PROS: Highly professional, highly qualified and friendly stylists
CONS: High prices but you pay for top quality natural hair stylists

Strandz is the best place to go if you are an African American who is tired of chemicals in your hair. The ladies who style here can handle all types of hair but specialize in locs, natural hair styling, braids, twists and kinky extensions. Yes, you can get your hair colored here but the good news is that they use organic (less smelly) dyes. Their prices are on par for NJ and the salon is very comfortable.

PROS: Great natural hair care
CONS: Sometimes the wait for services can be a bit much
