Mastodon State Park is another park that you should go to at least once if you live near St. Louis. There is a museum with lots of information about what this area may have been like when mastodons were still living. It also has a very large replica of a mastodon's skeleton. Although the museum does have a small fee to get into I believe the rest of the park is free. There are plenty of trails to walk on and picnic spots.

PROS: park with a museum about mastodons
CONS:

This place has a little of everything. There is a playground there for the kids. They have a few different trails that you can walk. And there is the Museum with the large Mastodon in it. The Museum doesn't have alot to offer, but the trails are so nice.

This state park and museum has a important archaeological site where mastodon bones were discovered. These were big hairy elephant looking animals from around the time of the ice ages. They have a lot of interesting information about the time dinosaurs were around and they even have a life size replica of a mastodon skeleton. They also have hiking trails and picnic areas. This is really a great place to take the kids for the day.

We enjoy going here as a family. THey have a nice play area for the kids and they have a couple of different trails. We've also attended a couple of birthday parties here under the pavilion. The trails are very interesting and kids actually enjoy looking at different things on the trail. You usually even see some wildlife while you're there!!

Although our school guide wasn't the best at getting the imformation out to the 2nd grade children we all still learned a thing or two about the mastodons and other animals from there time period.
The muesum is rather small and it cost money to go thru it although its not that much like 2 dollars I think and going thru it at least once is worth it. The trail is nice and until I went on it with a guide i had no idea that we were walking over the site where the bones had been discovered. They are also converting this house that the head miner lived in when there was a mine there to a hands on childrens museum which will be open before the year is out I am told.
