My client took me to dinner here this evening. The decor and employees were gracious and friendly. I chose the rabbit dish which was absolutely delicious, possibly the very best I've ever had. The menu also had several vegetarian dishes which my client indulged, shared, and we all enjoyed...everything was delicious and prepared well. The wine steward was helpful and knowledgeable. A tip for others...save room for desert!

I just found this site, so I haven't posted much, but this is definitely the first restaurant that I need to review because it is by far the greatest place to eat in the East Bay. The ambiance is totally Italy, the food is DIVINE, and the service is awesome and authentic and mostly Italian. This place brings me back to my trip to Italy every time! If you haven't been here yet, you should go... right now... like, stop reading this and get out there to sample this amazing menu. Order anything. I don't know why you are still reading this....

My wife wanted to treat me for my birthday, we live in Alameda but we are both working and don't get much time together and C'era Una Volta looks like one of the best restaurants in Alameda with fantastic reviews. Sadly it was not to be. We had a reservation for Saturday Dec 3rd at 6.30 pm, and understood that we were to be seated upstairs, they asked if it would be OK and we agreed. On arrival at our table however the chairs were extremely low with a hard seat. I'm 6' 4" and this wasn't an issue but my wife is 5' 3" and the table was barely below her chin, it was a most uncomfortable seating position for her. There were other tables with spare taller chairs, we asked to exchange the chair. The lady in charge of seating (I wish I had her name, this review is addressed directly to her) wouldn't let my wife have a different chair, how bizarre, instead offering the suggestion that my wife sit on her coat (she has a beautiful leather jacket which would no one would want to fold and sit on) then she offered a telephone directory for her to sit on! I really did not believe it. I asked if she had at least a cushion then she offered the telephone directory and a tablecloth together. Then she went away, and my wife asked the waitress if she could have one of the many unused taller chairs and the waitress was much more helpful, and went to change the chair for an unused one at another table. But then the first lady returned and refused on the grounds it was going to be used in around half an hour for a reservation. I could not believe this treatment, I'm not accustomed to this kind of rudeness. So we decided it was too much and left feeling very unhappy and embarrassed not for ourselves but for this extremely rude woman who ruined our evening for no apparent reason. We were well mannered throughout but I still don't believe the woman could be employed in a restaurant where customer service is key. We left and found somewhere else to eat but it really ruined the whole evening.

PROS: Never found out, it looks nice but who knows
CONS: Incredible rudeness and inconsideration, who do they think they are?

A truly fabulous Italian restaurant that you simply have to go back to time and time again. The decor is beautiful and you would swear that you are in Tuscany, and not Alameda. I have been there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but my favorite is the dinner menu. Wonderful pasta, especially "Farfalle al Salmone"- butterfly pasta with salmon in a yummy Chardonnay sauce. The wine list is interesting and is mainly Italian wines, at a very reasonable price.

PROS: Parking lot in the back of the alley is helpul on the weekend
CONS: Totally responsible for the 5 extra lbs that I am packing!!!!!

Think Italian restaurants are only about the same half dozen pasta
and pizza dishes we all know? Think again. (Although if you like
those old stand-bys, this restaurant improves even on them!) Think
fresh food, irresistible courses from start to finish, paired with
reasonably affordable yet stunning wine selections. Not content to
do what all other Italian restaurants do, this place is constantly
providing fresh food in fresh, innovative dishes, yet also ensures
their presentations aren't so exotic as to make you uncomfortable.
Reservations are recommended. Lunch and brunch are more
affordable than dinner, although evening dining is still worth
every penny. Ask about their ability to hold special events, too.
All in all, a class act. You'll be comparing all other Italian restaurants
to this one.
