My only suggestion is NOT to put all your eggs in USAA's basket or you could be in some serious financial trouble. To the people that say all those complaints must be coming from disgruntled employees, well you are wrong sir. And the ones that never have had any issues with USAA, well hold on it will eventually catch up to you. I have to say that their customer service has a lot to be desired, but sometimes you can get someone that truly has a heart, but after 12 years of being a loyal customer I see they truly do not care about my money. When they put a hold on a cash transfer - not a check mind you - that was the straw that broke my back, and if anyone tries to keep MY money I will start to slowly wean myself away from them and stay with my credit unions. So far the credit unions are better at keeping me happy and doing what's right by me the customer. Been with credit unions for over 15 years. USAA better get a grip or they will begin to lose 1000s of customers, and then the ones left will be the ones paying for it in the long run with higher fees, etc. THEY ARE NOT what they were when I started with them in 1998. Just remember DO NOT put all your eggs in USAA's basket.

I have been with USAA since 1974 and to be truthful, for the first many years, they were fine and easy to work with. Somewhere along the line they got a bit "too big for their britches." They have become, to my way of thinking, a firm for dealing with the "elite" ... with those that have never had anything bad happen to them in life. Over the last 5 or 6 years, when I needed them most, that have repeatedly let me down. I guess when kids turn out to make stupid decisions and wreck vehicles, when identity theft upends one's credit status and history, and when the housing market goes south, and foreclosure becomes a real threat, service to country (7 years during the end of Viet Nam) means nothing, and having been a loyal customer for the 30 years prior means even less.

I'm very disappointed with USAA ... they have become, in my view, just another money grabbing bank, looking for the fast return with no risk. "Let them eat cake!"

USAA only received one star because it is not possible to give them less. USAA tries to tell everyone that they are a Federal Savings Bank that caters to military, former military and those who support the military. Up until recently I fully believed that this was the case. I have had USAA since I was about 16 years old, through my fathers service to our great country I was ??fortunate? enough to be able to get USAA membership. Then once I joined the military I continued to use USAA. I am now out of the military, and contracting for the U.S. military in Afghanistan. I have been in Afghanistan now for 14months. I applied for a home loan through USAA and was approved immediately. I followed all of USAA??s mortgage services representative??s instructions (Sandra Tessitore). I had 45 days from the day the offer was submitted and all of my paper work was filed out, for Sandra to fill me in on any issues that might arise. Several times I emailed her with questions only to receive no reply for several days, or until I got sick of waiting for an email and called her directly. Seven days before I was supposed to close on my house Sandra notifies me that since I am a contractor, I need a letter from my company stating that they will keep me on contract for three years no matter what, and that my pay will stay the exact same ($145k a year). I asked her why it needed to remain 145K when the loan I am going for was only 220k borrowed?her answer that??s what the underwriter wants. No company can guarantee employment for three years and these conniving criminals know it. So due to USAA, and Sandra Tessitore, I am out $2,000 dollars earnest money, the fees they charged to go through this entire process (with the extra points I bought around $600), probably around 20 hours of my times on the phone with them, oh yeah and did I forget to mention a house. USAA is not about helping military and former military get fair deals, they are all about making the quick buck and then dumping you in the trash like last weeks leftovers. If USAA would have told me these ridiculous ??regulations? up front I could have had the time to go to a lender that can give loans to those who serve our country overseas and not the thieves at USAA. Once I am back in the states, able to go into reputable bank and insurance company, I will be getting rid of my USAA Performance First Savings Account, Normal Savings Account, Checking Account, Life Insurance, Home Insurance, Car Insurance, and Credit Card. USAA will not care about this because they have thousands of members who are unaware of their crooked practices. I just hope that this review will help fellow contracts know to go through another lender and not make the mistake I did by trusting USAA.

If I could give them zero stars, I would. I've been with them since 1967. People here who give them good reviews have no idea what they used to be like. They were once the best bank in the world. Now they reflect the current CIC's chosen favorite military leaders. They are lame, their customer service is lame, their products are lame. I've put most of what I had in JP Morgan Chase, where I get far better service and much faster response. USAA got fat and lazy.

During the large debacle over the "too big to fail" banks wanting to gouge customers with a fee for using a debit card we moved to USAA. We had an IRA, Checking and Savings established with USAA. As non-military, I was familar with their policy on Deposit@Home but upon the agent's suggestion we were told as long as we had an open line of credit (loan or credit card) that we would be eligble for Deposit@Home as they would then know our credit risk. We applied and were approved for credit card instantly. Upon calling back to enroll in Deposit@Home we were told it takes a few days for the records to be updated in the appropriate systems. A week later, I call back and was told that we aren't eligble. When I speak to a Manager I'm told that I was mistaken - I suggest they listen to the call and gave the Agent's ID , date and time. Found out that USAA isn't exactly USAA...at least their call center isn't. I was speaking to some vendor - Sikes I believe it was. Regardless, they refused to escalate my issue, honor their commitment or take ownership of my issue.

I immediately closed my IRA, Checking, Savings and Credit Card and moved to Charles Schwab. I've received excellent service, and am able to use their mobile banking.

So if you are ineligble for their military products...be prepared to likely be treated as a second class citizen.

Note: I went right to the top on my issue with USAA, voicemail, letter and e-mail all went unanswered. That spoke volumes to me, their commerical is wrong, they don't know what it means to serve.

They have a fraud dept that does NOTHING when OBVIOUS fraud occurs, they are complete idiots. It is Christmas Eve day and ZERO notification from the bank I have used for almost 10 years that my debit card info had been compromised. Two identical charges made in CALIFORNIA at a Shell station and I live in TX but no one notifies me or tells me ANYTHING. Spoke to fraud dept just now and they basically said "too bad" and then tried to blame the fraud on me because I used my debit card locally here in TX". Really??? And I will not have access to ANY MONEY now for up to 10 days until I get another card. Merry F***** Christmas to my child when he won't have gifts.

I've been a member since 1987 when I was first eligible. My parents have been members since the 1950's. Guess that pretty well sums up how we rate USAA.

I've been a member with USAA for 6 years now, and over the past couple of years have noticed a HUGE decrease in their commitment to its customers. I had had life insurance through USAA for close 2 years, I don't smoke or drink and have been a pinnacle of health since I decided to take control of my own actions (I'm 5'10" and weight 170 lbs). Due to a paperwork oversight, my coverage was canceled with them, that didn't really bug me as it was a 2 fold issue (they messed up the paperwork and I couldn't get back to them in time to fix it). What really makes me mad is they just denied me coverage (the SAME coverage I had before the oversight) because my average blood pressure was 3 points lower than normal (it was early on a Saturday morning when they took my blood pressure .. of course it's going to be low), and I was denied because of an out of date prescription for Vicodin that I hadn't taken in over a month for a shoulder injury I had. Yes, I was denied LIFE insurance because of their gross negligence to take in the fact that I was NO LONGER TAKING THE MEDICATION ... Thanks USAA for screwing over a (now ex) loyal customer and Marine Veteran .. Thanks for becoming like the other disgusting banks in America .. To anyone looking at banking with USAA ... DON'T! Stick with a local credit union, if you're a military member, go with an offshore account and do your research in other insurance companies ..

I have been with USAA for 46 years - auto and home insurance and banking. From some of the reviews I've seen here, I get the impression there are 2 USAAs. I have always got excellent service and rates from them. For example, my home equity line of credit is 4.99%, not the 18% someone else claimed they got. And at the end of the year, I don't get back a "paltry" amount - it's usually at least $400. I compared their auto insurance to others, and no one else could come close. Had an auto claim not long ago ( someone hit my car when it was parked ), and got excellent service from them ( didn't even charge me the deductible ). Have also had auto loans with them - interest was always lower than I could get elsewhere. I don't understand the negative reviews.

I've been a USAA customer for 6 years, and I have had enough. Their services have gone to crap noticeably in the last year. I was using them for a car loan, until I went to the dealership and got offered a better interest rate. I gave USAA the oportunity to at least match the offer, but they didn't even come close. Not a huge deal, but they lost that business from me.

The worst experience I have had with car insurance was due to USAA. I woke up one morning and discovered a little crack in my windshield... I called USAA that morning to report it, they had set me up with Safelite to come out that day between noon and 5pm to fix it... no one showed up. I called USAA back to notify them of the situation, all I got was a rude response and another appointment for a different company to come out the next day.

The next day, I called that company up and they told me they have no idea why USAA keeps referring people to them, as they have explained to USAA on multiple occasions that they have to contract the work out and they suggest going to someone else. I called USAA up for a THIRD time, finally got an appointment for 2 days later...low and behold the crack spread. Now my windshield has to be replaced and I'm stuck paying the deductable. Now, I am no longer a USAA customer!

I've been with USAA ever since 2008 just a year after I joined the Army and never did I have any problems with them. Customer service is great. Interest rates are low on the credit card and getting a loan is no hassle if they know that you are a responsible person that will pay on time. The interest on my credit card is only 8%. If you think this is bad? Try wells fargo with their 27%-30% interest rate on their credit card and hidden fee's on your own checking account. If all said you still think USAA is bad? Bank with wells fargo and you will see the differences :) I promise you!

I am reading reviews of USAA on various sites and can't believe that we had not seen these before. USAA sucks. I would not have said that a few years ago. We have been with them for over 20 years and never had a problem. My husband and I have excellent credit, an excellent income, and a down payment sitting in the bank. We missed closing on a vacation home four times this past week because USAA keeps requesting 'just one more item' to complete our package. We have faxed, re-faxed and emailed personal information to four different persons in charge of our package. I realize now after reading other reviews that we aren't alone. I feel used and just hope that someone there doesn't take my information to steal my identity.

Very disappointed with them.. We decided to purchase our first home last year. The search was long and we finally found our dream house. We got our loan paperwork in order almost 3 months ago now, and the first 6-8 weeks the loan officer sat on the paperwork.. we heard NOTHING. So then we got a little concerned and started calling, demanding we talk to a supervisor. Our loan officer was repeatedly snotty to my husband as well as our realtor. It was really just a bad situation. Finally we were reassigned a new loan officer, and she sat on our paperwork another couple of weeks. So documents finally go off to underwriting, and all.. they need us to refinance our vehicle so the debt to income ratio (which was off by 1%, because they didn't include ALL of my husband's pay.. despite seeing pay stubs AND our w2s for the last three years!) Anyway, so we refinanced the vehicle with USAA.. and somehow we don't have proof of the refinance.. despite the refinance being within the company. So we're 3 days away from the end of our contract. We'll be out a lot of money we've invested in inspections, earnest money, etc. As soon as we can, we'll be switching companies. The customer service is all sorts of fail. I have received better service at other banks, which I now wholeheartedly regret not taking my business to them!!

USAA uses that little end of the year check to make it's members think they are giving you some of their earnings lol, when in fact they are over charging you on the insurance products. I switched from them two year ago when I did a quote with Geico and found them to be $ 700 over priced, I saved that much when I switched to Geico! I was like geez they give me $40 back at the end of the yr and make me think they saved me money. How stupid do they think I am? They only accept Military members for the insurance products and over charge us, so they can give non military members their credit card and auto loan products. So what I think is they over charge us to cover for the losses that arise from the non military members defaults... I have great credit, but everytime I applied with USAA for products they were not there for me. They forced me to take my business to NAVY FEDERAL AND GENCO FEDERAL CREDIT UNION, WHO IS MORE THAN HAPPY TO GIVE ME ALL THE PRODUCTS I NEED AND WANT. Sorry for the punctuation, I am pissed and don't feel like being punctial right now!USAA will fail to see the impact NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION AND TEAMED UP GEICO WILL DO TO THEM, THEY WILL LOSE LOTS OF CUSTOMERS IN THE COMING YRS. TO MY FELLOW AMERICANS WE ARE THE REASON THOSE BANKS STAY IN BUSINESS NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

PS, OH I LIKE HOW FAST USAA JUMPED ON THE CURRENT ECONOMY TO RAISE RATES, THEY ARE LIKE THE GROCERY STORE OWNER RAISING PRICES DURING A STORM LOL OR THE HOTELS RAISING RATES! CROOKS JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE BANKS. BUT I TELL YOU THAT CREDIT UNION GENCO LOOKS OUT FOR IT'S MEMBERS FORREAL..

I Wanted to make my two cents on the attitude of USAA. I have been a member for over 15 years. I have paid my bills and have the House, Cars and Life thru them. I pay my bills but I have got the short end of the USAA stick already. My car was in an accident and I had used a USAA auto loan and was insured by USAA. The car was rated totaled and had prior bought that Gap insurance to cover any costs. "But once you have something go wrong they are a pain to deal with" my totaled car which USAA had reported had a bill outstanding Why you ask? It was totaled and I had coverage that I paid for every month. Same company and same insurance but they act like it??s a state secret, they have areas that do not talk to each other their words. I was overseas and the day I got back my car was in an accident and was totaled. I did my report and then waited for them to finish the investigation. I was getting called concerning my outstanding bill and I explained that my car was totaled and they were sending a check. A check from USAA to USAA sounds simple. But no they still have not taken care of it and now its 30 days and a negative report has been placed on my credit report. "I never complain but being treated like that really is making me change to another bank". As the customer who had a first accident ever but already having to do additional paperwork to fix my report. No problems until you need them and they will be so nice on the phone while screwing you over.

Year after year USAA gets rated as the best financial institution in the country and have millions of very satisfied members like my self and my family. Reading the complaints always will overshadow the praise but reading through most of the complaints and it really seems to me like people had one thing go wrong with their accounts and "now" the company is the devil. Everything was perfect for them until something went wrong (which its never their fault but always someone else) and now the company that you had and loved is now the worst company in the world?? No company is perfect and I would really look at all these complaints for the real problem before I decide not to do business with the top company in the US.
Every person in jail is innocent if you ask them...

I have been a USAA customer for more than 20 years, with a rock solid credit history. So, their shoddy treatment of me was shocking and a real eye opener. My wife recently traveled to Europe, where she was doubled charged for a train ticket, close to $400. She attempted to fix the problem in Europe, to no avail. We immediately called USAA to tell them about the charge. They said they would do a review. About two months later we get a one paragraph note from Marissa B. Orendach with "disputes resolutions, " saying "we do not have sufficient evidence to support your dispute." Orendach did not explain what -- if anything -- she did to investigate the complaint, nor did she say what "evidence" would be needed to make my case. She told me to take it up with the biller if we wanted to pursue the complaint. Wait, it gets worse! I called Orendach three times and never got through. To date, I am still waiting for USAA to return my call. I have banked with them for 20 years, never missed a payment for a credit card, a car loan, a consumer loan, or for insurance. I was very disappointed to be treated this way. Does anyone know of any banking regulatory agencies in Texas that could investigate this for me?

I have been banking with USAA for over 10 years, and recently this bank resembles a bank found in third-world countries.
Customer service used to be incredible, but now it has become incredibly horrible.
I was scammed by an online clothes retailer and immediately called USAA to report the dispute. (The USAA employee was "Yolanda") Initially, she only told to send in a 1 page letter describing the mistake and then the charge would be reversed.
After sending in the letter, I heard nothing for over a week. I eventually called them to see if they received the letter since I did not hear anything back, and they told me they DID receive and the case is Closed. The only problem is that the charge was still on my card. Apparently, I needed to send in much more documentation including a cover letter, invoice, etc. This is understandable, but what I don't understand is why they would not inform the USAA member that he/she needs to send in more information.
Talk about incompetent and lazy employees.
And for the icing on the cake, when I called and spoke to a supervisor about the situation ("Erma"), she couldn't even tell me exactly what documentation I needed to process the dispute. She's a damn SUPERVISOR in the dispute department, and she didn't even know what letters/documentation I need to send in

I used to have nothing but praise for USAA in the past, but now, all I can say is AVOID AVOID AVOID

When it comes to security and procedures, their half-assed service is among the worst around

Take your business elsewhere!

We have had USAA for almost 20 years and have never had a problem. I worked in an insurance office for a couple of years and know that USAA takes care of claims expeditiously and will "go to bat" for their customers. We have almost everything with USAA and I wouldn't change a thing. I am sure there are people that have had bad experiences, some of their own fault, for not paying attention to what they are signing or reading the fine print, but as for us, we love their service and are glad that our college age children are able to take advantage of their service too.

i had the worst customer experience Ive ever had with an company and a complete failure to resolve any of my issues, the rep even said "sorry for you luck" after my account was cancelled the day my direct deposit was going into the account due to non activity, i even called serveral times before and was promised it would be fine.. after it had cancelled no one wanted to do anything about my money that was in limbo, they refused to let me have access to the large amount of funds and advised they would send me a check in a few weeks, i spoke to several reps and manager to see what we i could do to get the money faster. no one was willing to help what so ever.... terrible how bad this company has got... and how little they care about the veterans of this country...

This bank is the slowest and worst I have seen. I sent an overnight express to them with THEIR official check in it after being told that it would take ONE business day to process the transaction. We are in day two and they STILL have not processed the transaction. Don't give these people your money unless you can wait to get it back. They are SLOW and full of apologies for the misinformation their employees pass out however, they can't and won't do anything about the problem.

I cannot believe the negative comments regarding USAA! I have been a member for 11 years to include banking, credit cards, auto loans, personal property insurance, renters insurance, personal life insurance, and stock investments. We have used them through 6 deployments, identity fraud, credit card theft, car accident, windshield damage etc. We have accessed them from OCONUS (overseas) with no trouble. Customer service is always stellar and friendly. Problems are resolved instantly. All ATM fees are refunded monthly and I can instantly scan check from home into my bank account with immediate access to our money. A comment in this thread regarding USAA "[being] concerned with sending dividends to rich investors" is unfounded, all USAA members receive an annual dividend check. How many banks send hundred(s) of dollars to every customer yearly as a thank you for loyalty? The more USAA is utilized the higher the dividend. Also, the perks of being a member like travel, rental car and shopping discounts are helpful. Yes, the rates are a higher premium but you get what you pay for.

I have had USAA since 1988. Love the service. I have used it probably 6 times. Had Allstate in college and once my girlfried (now wife) damaged the car. It pulled so hard after they fixed it it needed an allignment. Allstate wouldn't allow it. The adjuster was a smug SOB. I've had nothing but happiness with USAA. I talk to the guys at repair shops once in a while and they find it easiest to work with State Farm and USAA. They have all stated Allstate is a pain to work with. So, if I ever left USAA I would head to Stae Farm

I have a roof claim pending. My roof was compromised by the strong winds we have been having in Tennessee. I called them and spoke with a representative called Aguillard. It was a battle to get an adjuster out here. The adjuster informed me he could not see the damage which at that point had cost me over 1000 dollars to control. After he left the wood on my roof was exposed the following day and I am loosing more shingles as I write this. The manager I spoke to claimed she will get the case reviewed. Ofcourse she has not called back yet. This is rediculous. After our soldiers have served the country and still are, they claim to help when needed. Hypocrites.

As a former employee and former long term member of USAA, I completely agree with the many negative complaints shared on insiderpages.com. Customer Service is non-existent at this organization. How can one service a member when all you're doing is figuring out a way to get more money out of them? I hate the fact that this organization preys on the military tradition and proclaims that they are there for them in their time of need. They really should add fine print that says "as long as it is convenient to us, we'll always be there."

I'm all for USAA having the right to make money like every bank out here, but there is a right and a wrong way to accomplish that task. They say they're different, but yet there products are among the most expensive available. They boast how they did not take a bailout and maintained their high rating, but yet they are not progressively doing anything to make the experience better for their members. They are not different from any Insurance company or Commercial bank. They are bottom line focused and it does not matter if you're deployed, disabled, or a retired Vet. If it's not in their best interest of the business, you as a member will always be left out. My gripe is, if you're going to be the same as everyone else stop conveying a message of difference and just convey a business oriented message. This company is the epitome of what is said in the new Charles Schwab commercial: "...I gave them my money and I haven't heard from them since..."

My Debit card was stolen while I was in the hospital. I am disabled AND HAve limited income. I did file a police report and sent the bank a copy. the bank did make a deposit into my account and I thought they had refunded the money that was stolen from me. That was not the case. what happened was someone wrote a check for 13.60 to be credited to the account. The employee entered the check as a deposit in the amount of 1,360.00. The bank wrote me a letter stating they were not going to refund me my money. and the mistake the employee made I was going to have to cover. The manager gave me the check number of the check where the error was made. I had no copy of such a check for 13.60. I asked her for a copy and she stated I was not allowed a copy of the check in question. I am on disability but it doesn't seem to matter to them. Now i am being punished for their employees mistake. I have turned this matter over to the attorney generals office, My number is 501-672-1063 should anyone want to call. They took 1209.00 of my disability and will not return it. It is totally unfair.
Thanks! Wayne

Am a divorced Mom on unemployment. Even though my deposit was in the bank when I woke up this AM they refused to cover my rent check which they said went through yesterday but I called them yesterday and they didn't have it when I called. They will still charge me a fee and refuse to cover it even though the money is in the account. Now I will have a late fee, too. I cant afford this bank. They invite customer reviews but toss out the negative ones. They use these fees to pay dividends to rich investors.

IF you go through the questions and answers on their webpages for a home equity line of credit; you are led to believe that the interest rate will be variable.

BUT, when you get the loan documents. They state very clearly that the interest rate during the repayment period will be a FIXED 18% (no that is not a misprint, EIGHTEEN PERCENT!!).

I've been a member of USAA for 34 years. Like others in this discussion I have been "taken aback" by the loss of customer service in the recent three year period. I was flabergasted, though when I found out that they are less than honest in their web pages. I think I'll transfer the half million or so I store there and find a new insurance company...yadda yadda.

We were USAA customers for 26 years and as long as our relationship was based on them collecting our money everything was wonderful. Then one day we suffered a loss. Our car was stolen and everything changed. We were victimized by the thieves that day and then continously until we severed our relationship with USAA after that. We will never do business with USAA again. They tried to claim that thieves in our driveway damaging 3 locked cars was a collision and we owed 3 separate collision deductibles. They also low balled us on the complete loss of one of the cars and we were only paid about 2/3 of what it was worth. This was after arguing with them for about a year and putting up with their harassing and demeaning phone calls. STAY AWAY or YOU WILL PAY!

To the person that wrote "Complaints vs. Back-to-Back Customer Service" ...... First of all, use proper grammar and I might listen to what you have to say.

This company has gone downhill in the last 3 years. It all started when I married my wife (foreign national) and I added her to my accounts. I sent all the info USAA asked for and she was added. One month later USAA blocks my accounts or 2 weeks because of Patriot act requirements. It's USAA's job to make those requirements invisible to the consumer and not use them as an excuse. Horrible experience.

Bottomline USAA Cares about heir money but not yours. I bought a car for 35K. I put 15K down and financed the rest with USAA on 6 July 2010. The loan chack (USAA's Money) arrived to the German address in 4 days (Auto Exchange). My down payment check had no tracking number and did not arrive after 2 weeks so I cancelled it, even though they said it would be sent the same way as the loan check. I cancelled the first check on 22 Jul and USAA assured me another would be sent the next day FEDEX.

5 days later (27 July) I called for a tracking number and they told me the FEDEX was downgraded to International Mail because it was to a foreign address. Like we don't have military peoiple all over the world at foreign addresses?!?!?!?

I then called the loan departement and told them I will not pay for the loan in Aug for something I do not have due to the mistakes of USAA. They told me it would reflect on my credit report. I then told them I would win that one easily when I dispute it to the Credit Agenceis due to USAA's incpompetence and they relented and tranferred me to Executive solutions who then had the payments start in September. Still another hour wasted on the phone.

I ended up cancelling the 2d check as well and just transferring the money to Community Bank and having them cut the check. Total of 9 hours of my life wasted on the phone with these clowns.

I am shopping for a new bank.

I was a customer for 22 Years, but NO MORE!!!!

I thought I'd give these guys a try because I'd heard that it was a good bank for armed forces members and veterans. I guess it's not such a good bank if you actually want to get a loan. Somehow my debt to income ratio is good enough to get a home loan for $225,000 from another bank just a week ago, but I couldn't get a car loan from USAA for $13,500. That's with a credit score of 726, which I don't think is too shabby. I'll take my business back to my credit union. To the reviewer that commented on negative reviews coming from "disgruntled" people, your right. I am disgruntled. It disgruntles me when businesses are willing to use soldiers as a marketing tool.

Been with them for 40 years. Never had a problem. Customer service is great. Auto insurance is the best. Homeowners is a little high as is their umbrella policy, but no complaints. I rate them right at the top.

I have recently become a USAA member, as for years I have heard wonderful things about the company, and finally I was eligible to become a member. Now I am not so sure if I want to remain a member. I have not been thrilled with the service I have been provided in obtaining a mortgage with USAA.

But also, I work in the legal field and have been assisting a client with her insurance claim with USAA. Through no fault of the client, USAA has taken well over a month to process that insurance claim, due completely of their many mistakes and just not following through on their end.

I have spent two weeks on the telephone with customer service representatives and supervisors, with no satisfactory results - USAA's position is that there is not a thing they can do for the client to expedite the resolution of the matter, even though their actions have caused all of the delays.

So, Steven A., I agree with the other author, you obviously work for USAA and have never had to deal with customer service working on your behalf.

Initial contact w/ multiple departments was FAB, however, we have NOT had access to 'OUR' money. NEVER, I'll repeat, NEVER. that are in multiple accounts. NEVER. In addition, opened account for our minor child, encouraged our son young adult son, 4 additional family members and 3 associates and my 70 something MOTHER, which all joined and opened &/or purchased products. In quest of WHATTA F is going on with OUR money & why we were unable to access to USSA web site. The ONLY explanation we have been given, "WE DO NOT WANT TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU based on, DESPORITY agreement." WE are dumb founded. PERIOD. Here's the 'kicker' USAA will NOT release our money.

I have been a USAA customer for over 30 years and considered them rock solid until, like so many others, I was treated like a cipher by their customer service. I went to them on-line for a new car loan and was given a good interest rate because I agreed to have the payments auto-deducted from my USAA checking. They sent me a check for the new car which I turned over to the dealer (as USAA had instructed) and I had my new car. When the first bill came, the interest rate was a quarter point higher. I called to ask why and the rep said it was because I had failed to sign a box on the back of the check saying I was going to auto-deduct payments (although every form I had filled in had the lower interest rate). I tried to correct the situation, but they basically said, "too bad", it's too late, you're stuck with the higher rate. No acknowledgement of the fact that at the time I had insurance, banking and investments with them. They were willing to lose any good will on my part over a quarter point on a car loan, and they really didn't care. They're just another big bank - my advice is to find a small local bank that will treat you as a person and not a number.

I am writing to inform fellow service members as well as find similar occurrences regarding treatment by USAA. My USAA debit card was compromised in 2008 through a company called Heartland Payment Systems. The issue has since been resolved for all cards compromised but USAA has taken resolution one step further. My card was extended for use by USAA in 2009 without my knowledge nor consent; basically they violated their own security procedures and decided not to inform me. On 8 FEB 2010, I received an email saying my card was compromised and they were sending a new one and cancelling the old. Kudos to USAA. I called and asked them to not cancel my card because I was deployed but heading home soon (not enough time for a new card to reach Afghanistan) as well as the fact there were no incidents with my card. They refused and were not very professional about it, basically I was told my situation was not their problem and they have done everything they will do. I am confused because they have now decided to cut me off from my own money, the reasoning; they refuse to make exceptions in this matter. I am not sure what that means but I was also told many other service members will be notified as well. This is not right in my book and I have always looked upon USAA as a banking wonder. Help!!

This bank used to be a good bank. Now they SUCK. They are fee hungry and don't let the FREE Overdraft fool you. They cover NOTHING unless you have a credit card or another account on file. There is no FEE to move the money. Nothing like the Overdraft protection other banks offer.
Also there is no way to contact the higher ups, and when you do they IGNORE you. They are always looking for something to charge a fee on, and will even charge a fee when you have money. They are RUDE when you talk to them on the phone. Again they used to be a Great bank. But NOW THEY SUCK. I hope the FDIC closes them down.
My advice STAY AWAY.

Been banking with USAA for over 7 years, and never had a problem until just recently. Now, When i call Customer service is no help once so ever, and very rude. The reason i was calling was they blocked my account for no reason and would not let me access my funds for over 3 weeks. This made me very irritated. I called over 15 times and they still would not solve my problem. i Had never had a problem with them until Now, and for some reason this bank has just changed into a horrible bank i would not recommend, Go to a Wells Fargo and save yourself a whole bunch of time and money.

I was deployed to Iraq in 2007- 2008 when I banked with USAA, I would check my account information everyday, just to moniter my funds and make sure there was enough for my family back home. One day without reason USAA decided to put a freeze on my account when I talked to them they didn't give me an explanation for it they just told me to send in my information. So I sent it in a hundreds of times every time they said they didn't get it, I was too dark, it wasn't good enough. I had to end up switching to another bank in order to recieve my money because USAA wasn't budging on unlocking my account, Long story short my account got locked in APR 2008 I just got it unlocked in OCT 2009

Long story short....I am a military member and I own a retail business which includes an online store. I recevied stolen credit/debit card information issued from USAA. I immediately contacted them once I was for sure it was stolen to notify them of the fraudulent activity taking place on one of their members account. During my conversation I was told that there is nothing USAA will do with the information, not even contact the member to inform them their identity had been comprimised. I was informed that the member has to contact them once the fraudulent activity has occured and then after investigation they would refund the withdrawal/debit if it was in fact fruadulent. I then asked for a supervisor and that individual told me the conversation was over and she hung up the phone. I will never personally do business with USAA because if my identitiy is ever comprimised and the bank is aware of it and does nothing, there would be a lawsuit filed immediatley. DO BUISNESS WITH USAA AT YOUR OWN RISK....LITERALLY!

I have been with USAA for over 10yrs. I have done everything with them. I couldn't believe how many people have had problems with them until recently. I didn't miss a payment, wasn't behind, but I did remove a large sum of money from them. My online banking has since been revoked. Their service has declined and they are not what they used to be. What it boils down to is that there are some great things and bad things about USAA. If you're not having problems great but if you are leave. It has been my experience over the many years of banking that when I start having problems with an institution something is amiss. I hope that nothing bad happens but I don't foresee any good coming from the changes. When ever a bank puts its bottom line before employees or customers there are bound to be some turbulent times. I still love USAA but it appears management has done everything to undermined what USAA was built upon. So with that being written RUN once the problems begin, and may you have better luck elsewhere.

WOW! I cant believe some of these horror stories. I have been with USAA for 13 years and have a Mortgage, Home insurance, Car insurance, Fire insurance, Renters insurance, Banking, Online Banking, Online check depositing, Stock accounts. I think I have every product except Life insurance. I have had a great experience with USAA and I hope it stays that way. I would also like to think that the bad reviews are simply disgruntled people or the "exceptions".

Give them a chance and I bet you will be VERY happy. They have ATM rebates (no charge for other banks ATM's) I even use my scanner at home to deposit checks that are instantly available as cash.

I am happy and it would seem to me that it will only continue.

USAA is a pleasure to deal with. I've had homeowner's insurance with them for 34 years. I had automobile insurance with them for many years, but when my kids started driving I had to drop auto insurance. They just couldn't compete with AAA, California. Maybe I should compare again since all the kids are out of the home. Wait, I still have two of them on my insurance! I added a life insurance policy after I retired and that was a good experience. They sent a nurse to my house to take the requisite EKG. I've had a bank account (checking) with them for over 3 years. This is the best bank I've ever dealt with. It is easy to transfer money in and out of USAA, to pay bills online (for free), to set up automatic payments, even to individuals. Their debit card is great since they rebate ATM fees and don't charge anything extra overseas. I read some of the complaints here and I think they're in a distinct minority. The only complaint I have is that they charge $35 for an international wire transfer where Citibank only charges $20.00.

I have been with USAA for a few years now and have numerous accounts with them including checking, 3 savings accounts, all insurances, a mutual fund, a Roth IRA, and 2 vehicles financed with them. I do have one regret-not becoming a member sooner.

I was initially skeptical because they didn't have actual branches like some banks (many of which are going under) and I realize this reduces unnecessary costs and allows them to offer the excellent cost savings and customer service they do. Every time I have needed anything, they have met and exceeded my expectations. If they hadn't, I wouldn't have moved so many of my accounts from other banks (including quite a few such as "The Bank" which have accepted and wasted government bailout money) into USAA. I started with only a checking account to see how USAA performed.

One person mentioned USAA reducing their credit when they lost their job. Any bank should do this. Their business is to protect the bank and its assets which are ultimately the assets of all members(not just yourself) while insuring you don't get in over your head. Your credit line was based on the circustances when you applied(employed and could afford the credit). Once those circumstances change, you should no longer qualify for that as you obviously have no way to pay it back. That's just common money sense.

The main thing to remember is that people always post when something goes wrong but hardly ever take the time to post when things are going right. Basically, people are quick to ridicule but slow to praise.

I do not work for USAA. I am just a satisfied US Army Staff Sergeant who looks forward to many years of continued top-notch customer service from USAA-a bank whose service has gone well beyond any of the numerous banks I've dealt with and any expectations.

I hope that more who feel the way I do will take a few moments to share their experience.

I have worked with two business magazines. Some "ratings" lists tend to be like other things happening in our nation today. If a company has enough money to offer, they are able to pull the strings into their favor. Do I know if this is the case with USAA and Business Week Magazine? "No." All I am saying is, what you read in the media isn't always the truth. There are enough people on this list with disturbing experiences that speak louder than a rating in a magazine. My guess is that you possibly work with USAA.

My employer went out of business on a thursday. By the end of the next week USAA had brought my lines of credit down from about 50,000. to about 2000. I had zero balances. I didn't know they watched me so closely. When you actually need the credit it may not be available.

We have had account ans insurance with USAA for 5 years now. I used them previously and switched. Again, as with other people, they are great at first. Then the locked us out of our accounts and were told to speak with 1 particular fraund person. It has now been about 24 hours, and he won't return phone calls. We can't even speak to his supervisor. This is beyond ridiculous. I am pulling everything I have with them the moment, if it ever happens, that I can speack to Eric with the fraud division.

USAA just raised my home insurance by over 40% without any warning. They said my fire protection rating was put in wrong. It was wrong 3 years ago when I bought the house and I fought them to reevaluate and lower it. Now it seems that they want their money back. The average home insurance for my area with similar coverage is $850 to $900 yearly. USAA wants $1460 and that includes $250 in discounts for having car insurance with them. Heck I haven't even made a claim. They talk a good game, but they are scam artists and crooks in the end.

USAA just took my Home Equity Line of Credit away. Been with them for 20 years. Very good FICO,
fortunate to have a very good paying job, substancial assets/investments. All they said is my house had depreciated 20K and it did not meet the ratio critiera any longer. Talked with 3 different individuals, got some different answers and finally talked with a supervisor who seemed to explain things very well. His comment that "bankers are stupid people" helped me realize that perhaps that I should not take this personally. (this individual I talked with seemed to be very bright and knowleagable) I had my/my daughters checking/savings accounts with them, 2 motorcycles, 3 cars, homeowners insurance, HELOC, and credit cards with this institution. I always pay my bills on time, pay down my debts, accelerated my debt down on my home. In their defense, I do not have my home mortgage with them, (Wells Fargo) neither my investment properties mortgages(American Savings Bank, Bank of America, and a private investor). Basically it was my less than satisfactory experience with their motorcycle insurance division that prompted me not to think of them as first choice on these investments.

When I spoke with them, the representatives were very polite and basically told me they are a very consevative company and needed to protect me and other investors. I wouldn't say ingenuous or decieving, just skirted around some issues. I guess loyalty doesnt matter to them. Unfortunately neither does my money and future investments.

I sincerely enjoyed USAA several years ago but I have even noticed a decline with their customer service base over the last few years. I do respect their business policy/decisions but their unfortunate decision to "freeze"(remove) my Home Equity Line of Credit has prompted myself to seriously look at other financial institutions and question my loyalty to USAA in light as to what transpired this week.

USAA just took my Home Equity Line of Credit away. Been with them for 20 years. Very good FICO,
fortunate to have a very good paying job, substancial assets/investments. All they said is my house had depreciated 20K and it did not meet the ratio critiera any longer.
