This church is mostly over rated and here is why. It exploded about three years ago because of the star power of Donald Miller, author of "Blue Like Jazz", a rambling book that sounds like a twenty somethings journal of non-original thoughts. Because of this, the church has a good crowd on Sunday mornings, but also has a huge revolving door. The average age of the people attending is around 23-27. Used to be even younger. While the pastor is ok, he has an oversized ego, and speaks with a half - awake kind of drawl and uses the word "stoked" in every other sentence. Even if this doesn't bother you, the big gap between the image the church attempts to portray and reality may bother you. Such as: the image is one of where everyone is accepted, artsy types are welcome, relationships are more inportant than dogma. You'll notice the word "church" is not even in the name "Imago Dei Community". The truth: Imago Dei is a Baptist church, and like you might expect, is heavy on the dos and don'ts. Especially the don'ts. Their "home community" groups are advertised as places where you can find real community, whatever that is. However recently they have come out and said these home groups do not exist to make friends or even to question things, but you had better agree with their take on issues or go somewhere else. I am not kidding. Not anything like the image they present is it?
For those who still need more details, you may be interested in knowing the leadership of this church is extremely big on Calvinism, the belief that we are all predestined, and in its extreme, we have no free will. This is basically the whole point of a book one of their elders wrote.
So in short, bait and switch is an art form here. Seroiusly. A Baptist church in emergent church clothing. A wide variety of people have visited the place and almost always they report this sad fact: it is a very unfriendly church. Remember crowds do not mean anything in churches.

Pros: Feels like you are back in high school.

Cons: Feels like you are back in high school. No parking.

Imago Dei Community meets to worship at Franklin High School at 5405 SE Woodward- on the corner of 52nd and Woodward between Division and Powell. For more information visit their website.
Their business offices are at 811 East Burnside Suite #223 Portland OR 97214.

Imago Dei Community is a breath of fresh air in GOD's Kingdom. Imago Dei means "Image of GOD". In other words, it is a community of GOD Lovers who desire to reflect the heart of GOD in their individual lives. Solid in their belief in GOD's Word they deeply desire to practically live out these truths. The Community at Imago Dei is primarily made up of about 2000+ students, young adults, young married couples with and w/o kids and a few seasoned saints. Imago Dei Community is intensely interested in investing in the community of Portland and in the world. They are constantly trying to assess and meet the needs of the community.

The worship and Bible teaching is fresh and heart felt ... there is nothing fake or "canned" here! There is reflective time of communion every week. Pastor Rick McKinley is brilliant, funny and has a heart of gold as he shares practical insights into GOD's Word. Rick has had secular background, so he understands the world, but he eventually ended up at Multnomah School of the Bible and then worked as a Youth Pastor. Later he and a community of believers started a small church in Portland that grew into Imago Dei Community. Imago Dei also is very strong in it's support of "Home Groups" that are spread all over the Portland and Vancouver areas. These Home Groups offer a chance for people to build close friendships, while supporting each other and reaching their local communities.
My Bride and I, with our two college age kids, have been going to Imago Dei Community for almost 7 years. It has been a wonderful place to worship and grow. It is truly a beautiful reflection of GOD's Image.
