If you're looking for the worst dining experience in Portland, Hot Pot City has it all...: High prices ($16 soup), a dirty dining room, the atmosphere of a factory lunchroom, and some of the most unfriendly staff I've ever run

i had hot pot there on Christmas eve. The restaurant seemed dingy and run-down to me. The food was pretty fresh. Quite a few selections, but not a lot. The flavor was pretty good too. But it wasn't good enough for me to go back again. One

Horrible experience. Service from the owner was despicable. I've always enjoyed Hot-Pot City til yesterday's visit. The food is ok/average and it is a unique hole in the wall (only hot-pot restaurant in Portland that offers individual hot-pots.) The owner gave me the biggest stink when only 8 people (out of a 16 people reservation) showed to our dinner party. It was a big surprise to receive such an ugly treatment from the owner of Hot-Pot City. I understand she was expecting a large group, but I've also gave her the option to take walk ins if we ended up having less people. The restaurant was completely dead on a Fri night til 8:00. We arrived at 6:15. Without us, they would've done half of their business that night. During a time like this when the economy is bad, I understand people may not be in their best moods. Nevertheless, no reason for bad service. The Hot-Pot City offers punch-cards buy 10 get 1 free hot-pot dinner. I have enough cards for at least a dozen free dinners but I've never used them. My reason: to help support and keep bringing people back because I love hot-pot.

I hope the owner becomes happier with her life because her negative energy was obvious at her work place. It was uncomfortable for customers to enjoy their dinner while she watched like a hawk---making sure you eat everything you picked up from the all-you-can-eat bar.

AFTER THIS UNFRIENDLY UNCALLED FOR TREATMENT, I will NEVER go back there again nor recommend it to ANYONE.

Hot Pot City is a really neat restaurant near the Portland State campus. You put fresh vegetables, meat, tofu, etc., into your own personal boiling broth. Fantastic prices- a really good place to go for a hearty and healthy dinner.

At Hot Pot City you either sit at a countertop with hot pots of boiling broth set down into the countertop, or you can sit at a table with a portable propane burner (or two) and either your own pot of broth or a pot that's divided so you and your companion can have different broths but still cook using the same burner. And then you choose and cook your own selection of goodies from the buffet.

Of course you can order prepared dishes off the menu, but the joy of hot pot is choosing a broth (they have a variety, from mild to scorching), mixing together some savory sauces for dipping, and then loading up your plate with chicken, pork, beef (all sliced ultra-thin for fast cooking), tofu, vegetables of all sorts - whatever you like. You then cook your items in your broth. It sounds more complicated than it is. Our server is always helpful and makes sure anyone having their first experience is made to feel comfortable with the process, that your pot is at the right temperature, etc. It's all-you-can eat so combined with the interactive nature of the experience, it's a good value and an enjoyable change of pace. I've only ever been for lunch. Walking by Hot Pot City on a cool day and seeing the condensation on the windows from all those bubbling hot pots makes be hungry every time.

Went there for lunch right at 11:30am when they open (citysearch says 11am but that's not so anymore I guess). It being our first time we weren't exactly sure how to do it and the servers didn't seem too interested in helping at first. But eventually one of them gave us some pointers and we got going. It was fun picking the meats and veggies and figuring out the right spices/sauces. I wish my lunch break had been longer so I could have tried more. I will definitely try it again next time, especially since I will know what I am doing now.

Pros: Fun flavorful food, maybe options to choose from

Cons: Servers weren't very helpful at first

Very unique and fun place to eat. Food was fresh and service staff friendly and helpful. Do not let the "strip mall" location throw you off. The decor is just basic with nothing special but the quality of the food makes up for it. We really like this place and recommend if you are looking for something different.

The food here is the healthiest, simplest, and best I've yet to find in Portland, yet the ingredients are all high-quality and even exotic. They make your broth from a selection that you choose from, and you walk up to a buffet bar and pick your items. With that said, I think the night-time prices are just too expensive, and they start at 4 p.m.

Hot pot, for those who don't know, is where you cook your food in a boiling pot of broth in front of you. You have a choice of 7 broths and at this place they have a HUGE assortment of things to cook. Steak, pork, lamb, chicken, prawns, oysters, tofu, tons of other things & a great vegetable assortment.
Great helpful service, they are happy to help folk who haven't done hot pot before.
Highly Recommend.

If you love soup, this is soup-topia.
You choose your own delicious broth out of several they offer, make your own dipping sauce, and choose as many amazing fresh ingredients as you want, including meats, tofus, and vegetables.
The best part is, it is all you can eat.
It's hard to beat.

My rating for this restaurant is 9.5
