At what is undoubtedly the epicentre of Chicago's Hyde Park, where 53rd Street meets Kimbark Avenue, rests a precious gem of the community - the Third World Caf. Robert Raymondo, Proprietor of TWC, has turned his establishment, from the questionable state in which it was previously, to the lifeblood of 53rd Street, as can be attested by the many patrons that regularly frequent it.

The coffee is fantastic and the highly barista-skilled staff know what they're doing. In recent months, my big addiction has been their Caf au Lait with soya milk. They also now serve hot apple cider, in addition to their smoothie beverages.

Their food items are very remarkable as they make excellent use of their kitchen to provide a wide and healthy variety of sandwiches, salads, snacks, and hearty soups. They're well known for their home-made muffins. I highly recommend their Mediterranean Sandwich and Apple Salad. They list their menu on their website: http://www.thirdworldcafe.net

Set in lovely earth-toned dcor, the caf offers, both, table and lounge chair seating, rotating artwork provided by talented artists, and soothing music - not too loud, not too soft, with refreshingly foreign sounds. All of this with free wireless internet. As can be expected, it can get crowded (and I often wish they could somehow expand into adjacent or upstairs space, LOL), but you can always share tables with other patrons or order to go. (You can also call ahead for orders, 773-288-3882.)

I know Robert and other members of his fine staff by name for the very same reason everyone else does: Robert and his staff are very approachable, friendly - and they enjoy addressing you by your name. (Note to self: by contrast, I know no other Hyde Park vendor by name, and vice-versa. Interesting....)

But it goes further than that: their highly personable business approach is happily infectious resulting from the friendly atmosphere they've sown. Introductions are effortlessly made, people invariably meet, and so forms a community within a community. I've been around, I assure you, but I have not seen this before.

I used to love studying here. It's not the largest space so it can get crowded but the atmosphere is generally very laid-back and I love the music (mostly neo-soul). The coffee, muffins, and sandwiches that I had here were good but not that memorable--but the atmosphere was.

The Third World Cafe, located in Chicago's historic Hyde Park neighborhood, offers a quaint setting in which to study, read, or enjoy wonderful food, coffee's, tea's and music. With wonderful service, a well above average mostly female staff, strong ambience, and the best Hummus around, Third World Cafe is a very good coffee house that competes with the Starbucks down the street quite successfully.

PROS: Outstanding Sandwiches, Salads, Hummus, and Teas
CONS: Coffee mediocre and seating is limited

As an alternative to the typical cafes and bookstores, The Third World Cafe is currently the only all-vegetarian establishment in Chicago's Hyde Park area. Their menu also includes several vegan options and numerous choices of teas and coffees.

The cafe has a very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere different from rival coffeehouses and bookstores in the area. The music is soft enough to hold a conversation across the table without yelling, but loud enough to bob your head while enjoying the smooth neo-soul and world music vibes being released through the speakers. No attitudes here. The staff is very cordial, inviting and quick to answer any questions you might have about the menu or the shop.

Looking for a family spot? Several parents were there with their little ones helping with homework or just stopping in for a quick after school bite.

The food choices are plenty. I recommend the Mediterranean Veggie Sandwich, a mouth-watering treat made with hummus, red peppers and provolone cheese on grilled French bread and served with a mixed greens salad with balsamic vinegar dressing. For drinks, I would suggest the organic peppermint tea. It takes on the task of being refreshing and relaxing at the same time. The staff will gladly refill your cup with hot water upon asking.

Need a quiet spot to do some work? Bring your laptop and take advantage of the free WiFi service. Login is easy and the connection is quick. Third World is a great way to escape the beaten path.

PROS: Free WiFi and Vegan Options
CONS: Too Small
