I served as a board member and past president for a total of 5 years. The above good review was from my sister who was visiting me. I used to believe in this organization. I and other recently resigned 5 board members have found pervasive secrecy and deceit. We were not shown the IRS documents of income and expenses. When we found them "accidentally" online. I found my name to have been forged to a submission 2010 that I had never seen. Again no board member saw these documents that were submitted yearly by the Executive Director, Rita T. Best. She had forged my name as president and signed the other year's submissions as if she was an officer, when in fact she was an employee. She had falsified the board member roster, adding a person who was never in a board meeting in the five years I was on the board. She took credit for programs and expenses for same for a Berevement Program that did not exist. All bereavment inquiries were referred out to other organizations in our community. There has never been Hospice Care since incorporation of the bylaws. When one dishonesty was found we began to look for others. There was "creative check writing" found. There was unathorized transfer of funds into the checking account where one person, decided what checks she wrote and to whom. The treasurer was a close friend and figure head who never seemed to be able to produce a treasurer's report. The board repeatedly asked for detailed financials and were given excuses month after month. Until the dishonesty was discovered, we thought we were just dealing with a manager who was misguided. Many hours were spent on coaching and trying to convert the focus of activities from the "money losing thrift store"...to the programs that should have been expanding. Myself and others donated hundreds of hours of time, talent and donation of goods to support this organization. We resigned before knowing the full situation and the depth of discovery of irregularities at the bank. The IRS, Attorney General and the Riverside Police have been notified. The Executive Director continues to recruit new board members, within a circle of friends, who know nothing about the past infractions and secrecy of same. BEWARE. This organization has received a cease and desist letter from United Way for copyright infrigement and use of the logo after not being a member for 3 years. This organization still holds itself out to be a "Bereavement Center", when the bereavement center is known to be the personal office of the executive director. In that office she inspects alll donations which are brought to her for pricing and distribution. Ask why a Thrift Store continues to loose 2 thousand or more dollars a month. Why is there no profit. What happens to the donated goods?.........Ask Questions. Ask why the public documents (IRS 990's) have never been made public previously. Now that they are discovered, ask whey the latest 990 does not take credit for a bereavment program when in previous years credit was taken. Expenses were allocated for a berevement program when others were doing that work. Ask to see how many people were helped with your donation of any kind. Ask to see how many Companion Connection clients there are. There are many unanswered questions. The questions of the resigned board mimic the questions of resigned boardsfrom the past. The Thrift store remains and takes in donations. Cash comes in to the organization believing services are being provided when they are not. There is no Bereavemnt Care. There is no Hospice Care. Inquires for same are referred on by telephone only. This organization is being investigated. BEWARE.

I was visiting family here. I am from the mid west. It is a fun time to see the things gathred together for sale in this unique Thrift Store that uses it's profits to support community activities. The staff was helpful and friendly to an out of towner. They helped me find some great art books that I was happy to carry back home. They have some intersting hats and special clothing for large size women..a real asset for all shoppers. I know they need volunteers..If I lived here I would sign up;.
