I moved from the valley recently where I had been going to the Massage Place in Sherman Oaks. I had had great experiences there -- calming and soothing atmosphere, a feeling that the receptionist was always trying to pair me with the right therapist for the type of massage I wanted, and always a fantastic massage. When I moved here, I thought I'd have the same experience, just at a different location. I couldn't be more wrong! I called to make a same-day appointment and the receptionist asked me what time I wanted to come in. She didn't ask what type of massage I was looking for, and when I asked her what therapists were available to do a deep tissue massage, she again asked me simply what time I wanted to come in. I asked her when the next available deep tissue appointment was, and she said in 15 minutes. She said the therapist specialized in a "very firm Swedish". I figured since I lived close by and a "very firm Swedish" could be all right, I'd try to make it there in time. When I arrived (on time), there was no receptionist, but a therapist was there -- who turned out to be the one assigned to me. She led me into the room, right on the other side of the reception desk - the fax machine or something kept going off throughout the massage - and I told her I was looking for a deep massage and the specific areas that needed work. When she came back, she started with very light strokes, so I told her she could dig in as much as she needed to. She told me she needed me to relax first. Since every therapist has their own rhythm and style, I went with it and didn't press the issue further, but it turned out to be one of the most uneven, "fluff" massages I've ever had. I don't blame the therapist - I think I was improperly matched with her, but boy, oh boy was I disappointed! I think I'll try other locations around here in the future.

Pros: price

Cons: unfriendly receptionist, improper client/therapist matching

I have been a return client of this Massage Place location for 3 years,as I have Lupus which causes aching muscles daily.I find great relief in the low prices,as I require massages often and would rather not pay for the more expensive spa massages.I have always had a great experience at The Massage Place-until recently.I made an appointment for a deep tissue massage-when I arrived the receptionist was on the phone and was unable to attend to me.I went to the main desk to check in and began to wait for her. There was a woman hanging over the desk who looked at me and asked what my name was.I told her and she rolled her eyes and replied "come with me"-she seemed upset or frustrated.I began to follow her,all the while thinking "this must be my massage therapist?" She walked so quickly down the hallway (I was a bit confused) that she was out of sight before I was given the chance to catch up.She began speaking but I hadn't reached her yet , so I could not hear what she was saying. She was giving directions regarding the massage before I had turned the corner! I said "excuse me, are you talking? I obviously cant hear you." She said "yes I am"-and continued to give directions and closed the door behind me.In previous experiences,I had always been asked if I needed to use the restroom before the massage began-this time my therapist seemed in a hurry and did not ask.I did in fact have to use the restroom so I opened the door and went to look for the bathroom. After, I went back to my room and began to prepare for the massage. My therapist then came back too early and opened the door while I was changing - I said "just a minute" - she then slammed the door hard enough that the clothes I had just hung on the back of the door flew off the hanger! I wanted to just leave but didnt want to make a scene as I had come to relax and enjoy my massage. To say the least it was hard to enjoy this experience.I will NEVER go back as I felt humiliated and unappreciated as a long time customer.

Wow! This has got to be my new favorite place! I just moved to the area, and my back's been killing me from lugging around boxes for a week. I did an online search, and what do you know, there's a "massage place" right down the street from me! I wasn't sure what to expect, but for $44/hr., I figured what could I lose besides a hurting back! I just told the receptionist it was my first time there so I didn't really know what to ask for in terms of which therapist would be best for me. I told her my back was hurting from moving and she said that someone who did a combination of swedish and deep tissue would probably be best. I can't remember the therapist's name who worked on me, but she had short blonde hair and some tattoos on her arms. She was nice and made me feel very comfortable and best of all gave me an AMAZING massage! It's definitely not a spa. It's a no frills kind of deal. You go into the room, get undressed, get on the table, the therapist comes in and massages you. That's it. I could also hear a little bit of noise coming from the lobby during the massage, but it didn't bother me. The lights were low, there was a candle and calming music so that was all the ambiance I was looking for. I can't believe spas get away with charging so much when you can get just as good a massage from this place. They will definitely get my business again! Yippee!

I went to a "Massage Place" near my house in Venice (Main Street) frequently for a few years because it was close and cheap. One day after a mix-up on the part of the receptionist (she told me my appointment was 15 minutes later than it was) I was informed that I would still be charged in full, and worse, I was subjected to the most vile and dismissive, incredibly rude and un-professional behavior I may have ever experienced at any establishment ever. I actually really mean that. She had no sense of treating an established customer with any degree of fairness because of her error. She did nothing but repeat ad nauseam that they always charge the full amount no matter what happens, apparently even if the mistake was on their end. It was shockingly rude. I would highly recommend avoiding this place at all costs. Sure, you might get a cheap massage, but who cares when you could be treated like this.

If you are looking for a place to relax, go somewhere else.

My husband and I have been going to this place for massage for a couple of years now. We've tried a few different massage therapist there, some were bad, some were ok, but the best were Thai massage therapist -- if you lie deep tissue massages. Very good value for a good massage!
