Nice place to hang out with friends. There is a lot to do, if you have an imagination. I like to dance, but my boyfriend doesn't. So "houston we're got a problem"

We love the Night Light. Just a cool place to get a drink, hang out and hear good music. They have tasty nibbles if you're hungry.

I had a horrific experience at Night Light and will NEVER go back. Ignored when we walked in, we sat ourselves on the pation after receiving a dismissive wave from the bartender indicating he didn't really give a damn where we sat or if we did. After going out to the patio, the waiter out there--who appear tired and unkempt--ignore myself and my friend for 15 full minutes until we had to ask for a menu. He finally brought them and then took another 10 min. to return to take our orders. We ordered drinks along with a bread plate and meals. We waited another 20 min. for our drinks and when we asked about the bread and olive oil were told that there were a lot of other people waiting already and we should just be patient. We waited a while longer, asked again, and the waiter told me it wasn't his fault, the kitchen was to blame. When I mentioned that I would go back and ask myself what was taking so long (it had been nearly an hour to get drinks and no bread yet), he snorted...saying, "Oh yeah...I'd like to see that!" When I got up to go to the kitchen he said, "Wait, I'll go check." He went and didn't come back. We decided that we were going to leave...we'd finished our drinks and left the money for them on the table under a glass and were getting up to walk out when the waiter finally is coming with the bread...it had been about an hour and 20 min. by then. He asked if we were leaving and we said, yes, we were tired of waiting and that we'd left his money on the table. He made a big dramatic scene out of throwing our bread in the garbage and said, "Fine! Go! And don't ever come back again!" And I said not to worry...we wouldn't...but I would be sure to tell people what an awful experience we'd had. He said, "Who cares...Look around...we have enough people here!"

We will NEVER go back to this place. I have told other friends the story and they have reported bad experiences as well. It's too bad, I live close by and it would be a convenient place to go, but I have NO INTENTION OF EVER GOING BACK TO A PLACE WITH AS LITTLE REGARD FOR ITS CUSTOMERS' EXPERIENCE!!!

STAY AWAY!

This is my favorite place to go to Happy Hour. I love to sit outside here in the summer. Watching all the Clinton bicyclists running stop signs and almost getting ran over by cars at the corner during rush hour can be very exciting. It's a great place to people watch too. I love the Happy Hour food and drink specials. They have a beautiful back patio. Dinner there is also yummy. I have been there many many times and with the exception of one occasion when it was very crowded I have pretty much always got prompt service. See you there!

Each time I go to the Night Light, I always forget how crowded and smoky it'll be. I guess things have changed with regards to the smoke, but still. It's a great neighborhood spot, but either the neighborhood's gotten packed (a possibility), or the bridge and tunnel crowd has invaded (also a possibility). The drinks are good, and the room is comfortable- if you can find a seat. Definite points for the patio, though.

The Night Light is a great happy-hour bar with a decent (if slightly pricey) menu and a great cocktail selection. The large patio is is a definite draw during the warmer months, and a separate inside smoking section ensures you don't have to go home smelling like cigarettes. Bonus points for the friendly staff and quick service.

I'm in infrequently and haven't had a bad experience yet. The service last Saturday was very accomodating. the waiter with glasses and reddish hair was very personable and attentive. The prices are quite reasonable. He forgot part of the order but that was quickly rectified. I tipped generously. The table next to us was loud to the point of rudeness. But this is a bar....in America...domicile of the overpriveliged hipster.

We live in the neighborhood and maybe end up at the Night Light once every 2-3 weeks. Great happy hour food pricing and good food all around. Terrible service and attitude last Saturday from the short haired guy behind the bar. When I asked why the jukebox was only playing 10 seconds of each song, I was informed, "because we have a DJ starting." What happened to customer service? What about something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, we must have forgotton to put a note on the jukebox" or, "what can I do to to make it up?" Instead, I get a blank look and then a snarky attitude ridden, "well, do you want your dollar back?" Well, it was more than a dollar and it wasn't the money, it was the attitude. On the way out, I made a rude comment, which I probably shouldn't have done, so him and his little entourage followed me out. Don't bother putting me on the 86 list, I won't be back.

Pros: Above average food

Cons: Bartender attitude

With as many places to go around town (even the places across the street are so much nicer)...why would I go back to a place where the wait staff and bar help are snippy and rude. Interesting art but often too dark to see it! Wayyyy too smoky. The patio is nice, but the service so s*cks!

I have been to this bar on numerous occasions, and it never disappoints. Reasons it rocks: comfortable, appealing atmosphere (with a neat outdoor porch and local artwork plastering the walls), truly excellent food (with prices that can't be beat during their 4 to 7pm happy hour), a decent beer selection on tap and tasty cocktails, friendly service (once we had to wait a long time for our food and the waitress brought us free crab and artichoke dip for the inconvenience), and a huge pile of board games to choose from when you just want to sit and hang with friends. Plus, interesting music is always playing in the background as evenings wind down. As far as chill bars go, this one is top-notch!

I will give them props for a delicious grilled butter lettuce salad. It was num.

However, the smoke was too thick for my tastes. That may appeal to others, however!

The special the other night was sliders (cute little mini burgers) with BBQ sauce and bacon. YUM! They were to die for......

The regular sliders are fantastic as well. The happy hour items are always delicious - especially the mac & cheese and new house salad! Affordable and delicious.

Honestly, I don't really care for the Nightlight one way or the other. Just another in the cookie-cutter mold of "hip" bars that the "creative class" of this burg visit. OK at times, obnoxious at many others. Best jukebox in Portland? I think not--unless your idea of "good" is the same lame indie rock, irony picks, and smattering of obvious country and hip-hop CD's that every other bar of the ilk has. If it is, lemming, then naturally, it's great!

Main reason to post has to be to support another's mention of the shill reviews on here. LAME!! For chrissakes, at least make it less obvious.

I love this place! Those reviews on the staff being rude are way off base. I moved here a couple years ago, and not knowing anyone, went to the Nightlight and was welcomed warmely. I go there all the time, and while you can always find something wrong with every place, its definitely fun and cozy. Accusing a restaurant of "spitting" on your food with no proof is childish and I would guess you have these problems often at other bars/restaurants. I personally know several of the staff and I gaurantee that your wrong. Anyways, give it a shot. You can't beat the happy hour and the Mac n' Cheese is the best. (Although its more like a cheesy Rigatoni Alfredo). It does get crazy busy at times where I stay away but on the chill nights its great!

I visited Night Light the other night for my bday. Even though they were out of a few things on their menu, the service and atmosphere made up for it. It's so cute and the lighting is perfect. I don't know what you mean about rude wait staff because our waiter bought me a drink and hung out with us when he finished closing everyone out. The bartender was also very friendly and I was with a group of about 10 and we ordered alot of drinks. Everything about this place rocked and I will be back soon. It was a great night and none of us had any desire to go somewhere else after about an hour like it usually is when you are with a somewhat big crowd. Everyone was pleased and had a great time.

I was here several weeks ago, but not by choice because I had been here before and wasn't really thrilled by the place. Anyway someone else got my first drink and things were all fine. I went up to the bar for the second round. It took awhile for the bartender to come over but granted it was crowded. I ordered a few rum and cokes. He gave me the drinks, took my card, and I told him I wanted to close now. He then started to help other customers. After 5 minutes of yelling for him he came over looking annoyed. I told him to give me my card back. He brought over a stack of cards, and still seeming very annoyed asked who I was. He handed me my card and walked away. He never gave me a receipt to sign or a copy for myself. I again for 5 minutes tried to signal him over again. When he came over he was pretty ticked off this time. He demanded what I wanted. I asked for my receipt. He looked at me like I was crazy and asked me "Do you really expect me to go through all of the thousands of receipts and give you yours?" Yes, I told him. He laughed and said no and started to walk away. I then demanded for my receipt again. He replied to me saying to come back tomorrow and talk to the manager if I had a problem. I told him that I would. He told me fine and to "f--- off". I then stormed out. I didn't find out what they had charged me until it came up on my credit card account a couple days later. Thankfully it appeared that they didn't add injury to insult and overcharge me however I never knew that night how much the drinks cost me. This place thinks they're all that but they never will be until the service improves.

I just had to say something after reading the recent reviews, since it seems rather clear that theyr'e FAKE. Look at the dates. Until recently, the average time between reviews was something like four months. Then last month, just a couple days after my friend gave them a bad review on 4/24, calling them "horrendous", among other things, they somehow managed to get FOUR 5-STAR REVIEWS IN TWO DAYS, and one more review within those two days of 3-stars, even though it reads like a cheesy 5-star review.. Were the "reviewers" paid, or friends, or the owners themselves? Who knows.. seems unlikely to be a coincidence, and the last one giving a 3-star seems an attempt to make it not appear so painfully obvious.

At any rate, I was there during the visit my friend described, and it was easily the worst customer service I've had at ANY business in the last decade, and probably ranks in my top 5 worst of all time, as far as restaurants go. Whether the place is always such a black hole, I have no idea, and don't really intend to find out, though I am somewhat tempted to go back to see if the waiter (or whatever his actual job was, since he seemed so unfamiliar with how a waiter should act) remembers telling me and my friend to never come back. If he's still there.. THAT GUY (which I think is the guy with the mustache somebody else mentioned in their review) SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED for his behavior, and that's not including my suspicions that the reason he threw away our bread when it was finally ready was because he'd spat on it or something in the back room and didn't want to serve it to somebody else. Not a claim, mind you.. just seems a reasonable guess, otherwise why would he throw it out when others were waiting on bread? Just to be that much more of a tool in front of us and other customers?

So, yeah, if you like abuse, indifference, and employees trying to pass the buck instead of doing their jobs, feel free to check them out.

Oh, but the art is nice. lol

Where can you go to rub elbows with tattooed cuties and business men alike? Why the NL of course. This popular Southeast destination attracts patrons of all kinds, proving that variety is in fact the spice of night-life. With low lighting, copper-topped tables and rotating art shows, this bar is a unique blend of comfortable and cool, with a touch of swank. Seating is your choice of chair, booth, couch or barstool, with outdoor tables on the sidewalk and brand new back patio.
Once you find your spot, the friendly, attentive and smoldering staff (i'd fry bacon on 'em!) is sure to quickly put something delicious in your drinking hand. Offerings include local micros on tap, an excellent wine selection, and a long list of signature cocktails, all made-to-taste with the freshest ingredients. If you plan on having a few, there?s no excuse to do so on an empty stomach. The innovative kitchen staff will whip you up a wide variety of eats, from filling nachos and delicious salads with homemade dressing, to Chicken-Sausage Mac and Cheese, Seared Ahi (menu items might not be current but you get the idea) and much more. Everything is made in house from locally grown and certified organic ingredients.
If conversation lags, feel free to pick up one of the many board games provided, or make your way to the pool table for some sticky-icky. The Night Light is a great place to bring a date, have a meeting, or just belly up to the bar and slurp down PBR?s. Whether you come alone or bring the party, you?re sure to have a night to remember (or forget, if you prefer).

one of my all time favorite bars in the city! i love trying new places, but i end up here time and time again because i know i'll get great drinks and friendly service from the bartenders, yummy food, good people watching (and meeting), comfy booths, scattergories - i could go on and on. gotta love the bartender/waiter with the handlebar mustache, though - a classic portland guy. he's got great stories, even better advice, and always makes me laugh, not to mention he mixes a mean drink and makes sure i'm never holding an empty glass. make a point to become friends with him and you won't be sorry. he ROCKS!

I've been making this place my haunt for the past year, and I can say that it's ALWAYS happening. In fact, it's regularly jam-packed. And not only are the servers and bartenders warm and welcoming, they make it a point to get to know the regulars. In my opinion, this speaks volume about customer service. The jukebox ROCKS. In fact, I believe it was voted best jukebox in Portland in Willamette Week--and if it wasn't, it should be! Finally, the staff is totally hot, which doesn't hurt. BAM.

I love this place. The staff goes out of it's way to be nice but not in a fake way. It's hard to believe that it's a bar with the great food they serve up it's almost fine dining. Their specialty drink menu has all kinds of cool drinks on it. I especially like the Mike Screw. Keep up the good work.

Pros: Very hot staff

Cons: I'm sure a few hang out

Now that the weather is getting warmer, patio drinking is on my mind. I keep seeming to wind up at the nightlight lounge on Clinton and 21st and for good reason. They have a really cool staff, and although they can be overwhelmingly busy at times, as a service industry vet myself I can always appreciate people who remember your name and drink, as they do here. The food is really good too, maybe the best ahi tuna dish I've had in town, including much pricier restaurants. Drink and food specials daily, great jukebox and some cool patrons aswell. I tended to avoid evenings a bit, cause it often got smokey, but I guess they made the bar area non smoking till 9 or 10 now. Pluss with the doors open it doesnt matter anyways. Did I mention I love this joint, try it out.

This is the 2nd time I've been to Nightlight. The patio is nice and it was a sunny day so we went back, even though our first experience was underwhelming...slow service. But we figure it must have just been a bad hair day for them.

This time it was HORRENDOUS! We were not acknowledged. Had to ask if we could sit down. Then waited for the waiter to come and when he finally did he acted as if we were annoying him. His hair long hair was stringy and greasy and he behaved as if he'd been up all night (and this was NOT a young kid). We ordered drinks and food. After waiting a full 15 minutes...we got our drinks.

We'd ordered bread and olive oil. After 40 minutes no bread; my friend asked if we could get our bread (let's not even talk about getting the food we'd ordered that had to actually be cooked). The waiter told us that there were other people waiting in front of us for bread. I asked why it took so long and the waiter made a comment about the ineptitude of the kitchen staff. I said I'd be happy to talk with them and he said he'd like to see that. I started to go inside and he said to wait, he would check. He didn't come back....another 15 minutes passed.

So we'd finished our drinks and decided we'd had enough. We put money on the table for the drinks and were walking out. It had been more than an hour since we'd gotten there. As we were leaving the waiter was coming around the corner with our bread...FINALLY. But JUST THE BREAD, not our food.

He asked if we were leaving and we said yes. He huffed and puffed and made a big production out of throwing our bread dramatically into the trash can. He told us to leave and never to come back. I told him that that wouldn't be a problem and I also said that I would make sure to let people know about the service we received and he remarked. "Heh...Look around, we have plenty of people here. I don't really care who you tell."

So...good luck!

Pros: Nice art...but too dark to see it.

Cons: SERVICE IS HORRENDOUS

You'd be happy to go there on a cold, cold night. They have a jukebox & DJs and all sorts of nice drinks. It's on Clinton & 20th, which might help some.

We ended up here on a Saturday night around 11pm. It was crowded, but we were able to find a table right away. The food was amazing, best crab cakes I think I've had in Portland. Best dirty marti too. Quick service and super cheap - two entrees, a salad and 2 drinks for $25 (not including tip)! Plus they use local and organic ingredients. Highly recommended.

These saavy owners have taken a great neighborhood bar and made it even better with the addition of a back patio. More outdoor seating means more languid happy hours spent sippin' on a Johnny Collins or margarita while watching the lovely and diverse inhabitants of the Clinton/Division neighborhoods stroll by (watching the wait/bar staff is generally easy on the eyes, too). If the smoke inside bothers you, stop wheezing and breathe freely outside at one of the sidewalk tables or under the sheltered patio. The jukebox here is still the best I've come across in Portland. And the food - especially the heavenly nachos - is what keeps you moving from happy hour right on in to the rest of the evening.

Granted it is a little smoky, but the drinks are strong, the food is great and the atmosphere is comforting. It's a great place to meet up with friends before a night out, and a great spot for one more on the way home. Get an air purifier and this place is an ideal neighborhood bar.

the night light is a perfect little spot. some of the friendliest staff in town. the crowd is a real mix, and the other patrons generally nice as well. overall it's cozy, and close in.
come mid-week: there's a great mellow vibe, and always a smathering of beutiful people. the weekends can get a bit crowded after midnight.

Overrated. Smoky, twice the music volume appropriate for the small space, pretentious. Wall-to-wall losers. Taking the hard-earned cash elsewhere.

3-7 happy hour with great food choices (I recommend the $2 nachos), good juke box, seperate smoking bar, and all around pleasant atmosphere.

One of my favorite after work haunts.

I really like this place, but after a while because it's kind of small, it gets way too smoky for comfort. Even my smoker friends have had to leave. If they put extractor fans in on made it non-smoking I would definitely go back again, but for now, we're going elsewhere.
