In 3 months I will be 65 years old. I have been eating sushi since our Japanese next door neighbors got me hooked on it when I was 3 years old. I love sushi so much that I have gone to great lengths to learn how to me pretty good sushi.

The headline I added pretty much sums up my experience at ""Jo's Sushi"" restaurant"".\r\nI read other reviews and thought that those people with negative oppinions just had different prefrences when it came to sushi. I've had a wide range of sushi resturaunts, so, I can tell what sushi is at it's freshest. I had such a horrific experience at Jo's sushi that I will never eat there again. And I do eat A LOT of sushi.

Pros: The restaurant was close to my home.

Cons: I'm unable to eat there again because of my upset stomach.

I don't know what Maestro72x & spawn350 could be referring to? I have dined at Jo's at least a dozen times, and the experience is always one of freshness, hospitality, and the familiarity that makes one become a ""regular"" customer. Jo is a sushi chef in the ""classic"" sense, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Volcano Roll or ICHIRO-LL from their maki selection, and ask Jo what he recommends. The only ""one star"" reviews he has received are from users who have only reviewed Jo's, not very credible. Reads more like reviews from the competition, written on successive Fridays none-the-less. Eat at Jo's!!!!

Avoid this place or you will get the plague!\r\nThe most horrific sushi I have ever endured. I wish I could give it no stars. I even joined citysearch for the first time ever to post how bad this place is. If I had sushi like this the first time, I would never EVER eat sushi again.. The only light at the end of the tunnel is that I know what AMAZING sushi is and now I know the other end of the spectrum.\r\nI think I am going to be sick...\r\n*gasp***

Pros: You get to leave in one piece.

Cons: You will be tossing pieces of yourself later in your bathroom

I went to Jo's based on the reviews here. I think that most of the people that like this place must also consider Safeway sushi to be excellent.\r\n\r\nThis sushi wasn't just bad; it was painful. The selection is terrible. The fish tasted like it came out of a can. I could go on and on. I had to go get icecream to erase such a bad experience.\r\n\r\nIf you want good sushi go to Zushi Puzzle, Nakid Fish, or Sushi Groove in SF. If you want to torture yourself go to Jo's.

The staff so friendly and warm I feel like I part of a family. The customers are friendly and the bar is a joyous place to eat and socialize. You will not regret your visit. Dee

Moved from the city out to the burbs and was hoping to find a good sushi restaurant. This definetly is not it. The sushi is average at best, and overpriced.

Part of what makes going to a sushi bar such a great experience is the company...aside from a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere and delicious food, our absolute favorite part of the night was chatting with the great guys behind the bar--one young man in particular who will be leaving for Japan in September to study taiko...so you should definitely try to stop by Jo's before he leaves! Great sushi AND eye candy- can't beat that!

The sushi was very fresh, but if you are used to the huge and creative selection of rolls you get at a lot of sushi places in the Bay Area, you will be dissapointed. Mostly basics here. Pretty expensive as well. Very tasty food though, and probably closer to authentic Japanese.

I live in Oakland, and I have established a few favorite sushi bars in Oakland, Berkeley & Alameda. But my work brought me out to Morello Avenue in Pleasant Hill, and a co-worker recommended Jo's Sushi for the expertise of the sushi chef & owner (Jo) and described the place as a ""hidden gem."" SO TRUE! I watched hoops on the TV, ate the ""butteriest"" nigiri, and spoke with the owner about how he became so popular with the people of Contra Costa county. Finally, the one thing that will amaze you is they have the most FANTASTIC bathroom in restaurant history. No kidding.

Jo lets folks know what fish is best on the night. Try to order off the specials listed on the shelves behind the bar. Great selection of Sake too!\r\nSit at the bar if you can.

As close to authentic Japanese as Japanese restaurants get in the area. Probably only second to Miraku. Only place I know of that serves kare (curry). Katsu kare (Pork cutlet in curry) tastes almost as good as the best katsu kare I've had when I was in Japan.\r\n\r\nVery friendly service. Free miso soup and salad for most dishes and free mint chocolates with the bill (if you don't get any chocolates, ask for it).\r\n\r\nLunch dining and dinner dining are two very different experiences but are both very pleasant. Though the menus are different for lunch and dinner, dine there often enough and you can ask for some items that are not on the menu.\r\n\r\nPersonal favorites: Chicken Shoga (Ginger), Katsu Kare

You may experience so many different rolls. But Jo's has its original nigiri sushi and side dish. I have enjoyed trying ""Tilefish wakasayaki"" grilled tilefish. the best part of the dish is the scale on the fish. I had never eaten fish scale before, but it's so good.\n

We've been looking for ""our"" sushi place after moving to the area from SF. Tried places in Lafayette and Walnut Creek - nothing great. Then we found Jo's in a unassuming little strip off of Taylor. SO FRESH! GREAT Sushi! Rivals what we had in the city, plus the atmosphere was fun and homey. like the cool sushi spots in the city, where there is friendly banter between the sushi chef and the locals (boxes of loyal sake drinkers line the back wall). If you live in the East Bay, go here! (but you probably already know about it!).
