I went there with a friend for the first time, the service was good but the fare was just ordinary. The corned beef hash was as dry as ashes and the eggs benedict way too lemony as others have noted. The biscuit was very good, maybe if I'd had biscuits and gravy or the pancakes it might have turned out differently.

I had a huge family get together after my fiance completed his degree and for the life of me could not find a local restraunt that could serve a party of 13 for breakfast on a Saturday!
Well i was pretty discouraged but left a voice message on the service at Sanborns and was thrilled when I got a call abck saying they would love to book the reservation for our gropup. Well it was everyones first time there and we all loved it the place was so cute the staff was friendly, it was spottless and the breakfast was amazing!!! We will definately be back!!!

We had breakfast at Sanborn's 5/22 and loved it. I had the eggs benedict, my wife had an egg white omelete with sun dried tomatoes, artichokes and feta. We split a fruit plate and biscuts with homemade fruit preserves. Absolutely delicious!

The eggs benedict had perfectly poached eggs, nice thick slices of ham and an excellent hollandaise that is made to order. Not too lemony at all as some other reviers have indicated. I didn't try my wife's omelete but she said it was awesome. The biscuits were your basic buttermilk recipe but when paired with whipped butter and the house made fruit preserves they were transported to another level.

The fruit plate was generous and far better than the 75% melon plates you get at other restaurants. All in all, it was the best breakfast we've had in Portland. Everything I saw coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. These folks know what they're doing.

My sister has always raved about this place and I finally got to try it today. She got her usual mango German pancake while I opted for the special fig and chevre German pancake. I rarely eat anything sweet for breakfast but could not resist this interesting option. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! Would definitely go back just for that. Our other dining companion ordered eggs, potatoes and bacon. This didn't quite live up to the German Pancakes but was still pretty good. The menu is quite extensive and I can't wait to go back to build my own omelet!

I recently tried this place and and thought it was less than ok. I'm diabetic and I will tell you they have got some really tempting dishes. Fearing being put into a coma, I opted for the spinach, eggs, and steak (kelly street special). Not all that good. The spinach was way over cooked, almost to the point of turning to green liquid. The meat tasted like the only seasoning used was worscestershire sauce, and had the texture of being cooked the day before, refrigerated, then left on the grill in a pile for far to long. As for the potatoes, you might have to trade in some carbon tax credits before you eat them. That was ok for me because potatoes aren't really diabetic friendly. To be honest, I could have done better with the leftovers in my fridge. The place just doesn't do it for this foodie but if it works for the local trendies then maybe they will stay open for awhile

I visited Sanborn's with a friend that lives in the area. I ordered the eggs benedict, and she had a fruit plate. The hollandaise was tart to the point of being inedible, like an eggy & buttery lemonade. Of the fruit given, about half was less than ripe. The service was good and all that.

My friend swears that it?s not usually like this, and I?m willing to give them place the benefit of the doubt. Maybe next time it?ll be better.

Sanborn's is just fresh- the ambiance, the service, the food. It accomplishes the comfort level of an old school breakfast place with a twist. The twist is the refinement of cusiine and environs. The omelets are delicate and cooked perfectly. Breakfast does leave you feeling greasy and heavy. Everything tastes like it was cooked from scratch with the freshest ingredients. Unlike an old school breakfast place, Sanborn's is clean, upbeat, and colorful. And the wait staff makes everyone feel like a VIP. My wife and I love going to Sanborn's.

My wife and I love Sanborns.
Where to start? I love the menu - there are so many specials - but even the menu stalwarts have a little twist or interpretation. You really can tell that the chef loves his food and likes experimenting. Then there's the food itself - excellent. I think I've tried half a dozen menu items and cleaned my plate every time. They don't do average quality and then make up for it with quantities - you'll get a great quality breakfast and a good portion size too.

Everything at Sanbrn's is made from scratch. They are only open Wednesday through Sunday until 2:00 p.m. They also have a great lunch menu and the salads are wonderful.

My boyfriend and I are breakfast snobs (spoiled by San Francisco), and we've had breakfast at a lot of places in Portland. Sanborn's has become our every-weekend, not-to-be-missed tradition, and we seldom go anywhere else. There is usually only a minor wait (if any), the staff is SUPER-friendly, and the food is awesome. They serve some of the only coffee I will drink, and their French-press mochas are to die for. They have an excellent selection of food, and the waiters are always very helpful in suggesting options. Try the biscuits! Some of the best I've had, especially with the home-made jam.

Don't miss this place. Even the staff seems to like it a lot, there--you'll see the same faces month after month!

I found Sanborn's on Citysearch and I think I may have found my new favorite breakfast in town. There were so many choices on the menu, it was hard to decide what to have. My girlfriend and I decided to split two entrees; the blueberry belgian waffle and huevos rancheros. Sanborn's is not kidding when they claim to have the best huevos rancheros in Portland. The ingredients were very fresh and the red and green sauces were perfect. The blueberries in the waffle tasted fresh-picked and were delectable. After enjoying such delicious food, we were very surprised as to how inexpensive our bill was. I look forward to my next breakfast experience at Sanborn's.

I had my husband take me to Sanborn's after reading about it today. We were seated promptly where we were asked if we wanted coffee. Of course I said. Then there were 2 tables seated right after us who wanted coffee as well. We were forgotten about and the other tables were given their coffees and drinks. When our waitress who had black hair with pink highlights came over to ask how things were, I voiced my concern about the cofffee. She got an instant attitude with me and proceeded to tell me well ill get your coffee jeez. then she talked bad about us to the first lady who asked if we wanted coffee. When she came back to the table, I had made up my mind to go elsewhere. We told here we were not here to put up with her attitude and that we were leaving. She acted like she had won the battle. Unfornately for this restaurant I will not come back nor refer anyone to them. I instead will send them to Denny's where at least they will get good service and their coffee..

Cons: RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE

This was our first visit to the restraunt, but definitely won't be our last. We were greeted right as we walked in the door and seated at a lovely outdoor pation. Being the only customers on the patio, I was sure that service would be lacking but our waiter arrived promptly, our cups filled with water and coffee and lo and behold I never once saw the bottom of my cup, without a doubt the best service i've had at any restraunt in Portland!!!! Then the food arrived, I had huevos rancheros it was wonderful, everything made fresh, it tasted great and looked good. My partner ordered the apple german pancake and was so smitten by it, he declared it "the best pancake I've ever eaten" and has badgered me ever since to recreate the exact same recipie (I'm a good cook, but I ain't that good, oh well, I guess we will be visiting Sanford's on a regular basis.

Cons: None

We had mixed feelings the first time we went to Sanborn's. The food was excellent but we waited for our food for 45 minutes after we had ordered. They say you never have have a second chance to make a first impression but with food like this you gotta go back. We went back today and the food hadn't changed a bit. AMAZING! Huevos Rancheros and German Pancakes were the two things we ordered. They were fantastic! Large portions and great service. Jodi was our server and she was very friendly. Actually, I believe that every single server in the place stopped by our table and one point to ask how everything was, fill our drinks, clean up plates, ect. DO show up early! We went on a Sunday, got there about 9:45am and got the last vacant table. We left at about 11am and there was probably 15 people waiting. Even if you show up late, it's worth the wait! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM GOOD!!!!!

This place is not your trendy hip joint that serves nuevo junk, this place is your regular 'come in and eat' joint that I love. The decor is bright and cheery without being pretentious; the servers are friendly and can actually carry on an intelligent conversation (if you so choose). We had the owner's daughter wait on us and she was a delight. The food was wonderful, hot and tasty without being over-sauced or spiced up. The prices are right in line with the amount of food you receive as well. The coffee is hot and always coming but I really recommend a cup of their hot cocoa! Spectacular!

After hearing freinds rave about the biscuits, I decided to have brunch with the girls. There were six of us at 11:45 on a Saturday. I was the first there, greeted promptly and kindly. Two others arrived and we had just a short wait for seating on the enclosed patio. We were treated to pleasantries and frequent updates durring that time. Coffee was good, service was great, they didn't seem to mind waiting for the rest of our party to arrive. I had the eggs benedict. The best I have had in portland and possibly ever. The eggs were perfectly poached (I often have to send them back at other places) and the hollandaise is delicious, lemony and zingy as it should be, but since it is made to order, I'm sure that less zip could be requested. I kept finding more and more ham hiding under the sauce, and good ham it was. I tasted the german pancake with fresh rhubarb from the farmers market. i LOVE German pancakes and can't wait to try the mango one. I had a biscuit and everyone was right. Yum! with rasberry jam. The entre prices were very reasonable and the portions plentiful, unless you want to make a meal of sides, but that bacon did look good. I highly reccomend!

However, whenever I go the place is cold and the atomsphere is lacking.

Where a jacket and enjoy some great food!

I live down the street from Sanborn's but had never tried it. I went this morning and it was amazing. it's very appealing inside and you are greeted immediately. I had the orange juice and the corned beef hash. The juice was fresh squeezed and had a great flavor. The hash had just the right amount of onions and potatoes. I also really liked the strawberry jam. Service was quick and with a smile.I will be coming back often.

On my way to the Airport, I stopped into this cute little purple building after having driven by it multiple times on my way to work. First thing's first, I was greeted at the door by a smiling young man who showed me to my seat. Even after a few minutes of watching other peoples' orders go by and the service people were getting, I could tell that this was someplace special. I decided on one of the "specials" of the day which was a Banana Praline German pancake. Now admittedly, it wasn't that busy when I was there, but my food came in less than 10 minutes!

What else can I say--Great service (the young man who met me at the door chatted with me for a while about the history of the business), and Great food (I couldn't believe my eyes when my food came down in front of me, and the taste...oh my).

And best of all, I got to the airport on time and was full for my whole flight to Chicago!

Highly recommended for those who want a personal breakfast experience, great food, and a healthy dose of things done right in the world.

Imagine my delight as a breakfast restaurant junkie when I moved into my place with a breakfast place a block and a half away! I was soo excited I ate there alone and right away. I was not impressed with my B&G. A couple weeks later I ventured over again for some potatoes and an egg. The egg was O.K. but the potatos(one of my favourites) was over cooked and somewhat burnt served luke warm. Bummer! O.K. fast forward, It had been a long time since I decided to go again (I mean c'mon! a block and a half away!), I caved and my bf and I went(who also wonders at the ratings) and we both ordered eggs benedict. The hollandaise was so lemony it overtook the meal and was just not good. I actually brought it up to the waitress thinking that maybe it had gone bad and they didn't know but the answer was "this is our speciality". Ooofta! I do not get it why people rate this place so highly. I can only guess they have not been out much at all to anywhere else. And I am not ripping on the decor, just the food. Really I have tried and tried to find something to like and haven't found it. AND the prices are not balanced well with the portions.... I really wish I could say different. Sorry guys.

Where to begin... Wonderful selection of pancakes, egg dishes, sides and beverages. It's so nice to have a place that serves top quality food until two in the afternoon! I don't know about everyone else but I can't always get that breakfast craving before noon. The sourdough pancakes and strawberry jam are the best. The wait staff is awesome! My only request would be that they serve cage free eggs!!!

I tried this place on whim a couple of months ago and now I can't eat breakfast anywhere else. The breakfast burrito is amazing, the buckwheat pancakes are wonderful, and the coffee is good stuff. The service is good too, fast and efficient. The only negative thing about this place is that on the weekends it's busy, so you may have to sit in close proximity to someone you don't know. But you can hardly blame the resturaunt for it's popularity, after all it's the best breakfast I've ever come across. Go immediately if not sooner.

We've lived in the Westmoreland area for over 2 years and have driven by Sanborn's a million times, always saying, "we've got to try that place." Alas, we finally got to try it last weekend, and it was INCREDIBLE. Everything - ambiance, cleanliness, wait staff, food quality - was AMAZING. Rarely do you find a place like this, and at such reasonable prices. Having a 2 year old and a 4 month old, we are always hesitant to even try to eat out, but Sanborn's was kid-friendly and had no problem with us taking our 2 year old into the kitchen to check out how his food was made. This is our new favorite breakfast place, and are proud to be on the path to becoming regulars. We hope it doesn't become so famous that we can't get in -- yes, it's that good.

My husband and I happened here one day around 12. The atmosphere is great. There is an upstairs that is quite if your by yourself or just you and a friend, the upstairs is small and cozy. You can see two pictures of the chef as a young boy cooking at a BBQ. That is Mr. Sanborn back in the kitchen and that is him as a boy doing what he already loved. His talented daughter works with her Dad.
About the food. It is so great. You have to try the corn beef hash. My husband said the eggs benidict were the best he ever had. The prices are lower than you would expect. This place is so real with Dad in the kitchen and daughter over seeing the guests. At the same time it has a real up town feeling. I am not a big meat eater but I always like to try corn beef hash and regret it right when it gets to the table, all greasy and nasty. Not here this, this is what corn beef hash is suppose to be like. No grease and rad peppers in the mix. They serve it with poched eggs on top you will take some home if you are not a huge eater, big protions. They make thier Hallidais sauce MADE TO ORDER.

Not only is Sanborn's clean and appealing asthetically, but it has a friendly feel to it as well. The wait staff were friendly and helpful - and the service was quick. I'm very fussy about coffee, grind my own everyday, and theirs was delicious. I hesitated to try the blueberry Belgian waffle because of past experiences with blueberry compote that had a texture more like glue. But Sanborn's blueberry waffle was light and the compote was fresh and syrupy. My husband loved his hash and eggs; I don't like hash but found this to be very tasty. It was a little spendy for a breakfast place, but well worth it. I don't know if they have a parking lot. We didn't see one, so had to park on the street. This all said, I'm going again, with some girlfriends tomorrow, to introduce them to this great breakfast haven.

We go there almost every weekend. The food is never, ever disappointing. The chili relleno special is to die for, but check the most special board of specials, because there is always something new and unique. Where else can you get a rhubarb german pancake? The people that own and operate Sanborn's are quite possibly the nicest human beings on the planet, and the waitresses are the best in town.

Pros: Food, service, Everything!

Cons: Got a parking prob? Reduce your oil dependence, ride the bus, walk, bike, duh.

After my plane landed in Portland early last week , my friend picked me up and wanted to take me to " a wonderful little restaurant" that makes "a mean breakfast"...well how could I resist? My friend was right on the mark!! Coming from San Francisco, the "foodie" capital of the world, I have to admit I wondered how a little spot in Portland might measure up- I was stunned!! The food, atmosphere, and service were above and beyond many of the great spots in SF- the baked omelette was very impressive as were the mango pankakes my friend insisted I try! Our waitress was a charming server named Dayna who kept us smiling throughout our experience at Sanborns. The restaurant was bussling with customers, but the wait was not more than a minute! I determined with my friend that this will be our new tradition for each trip to Portland- if I lived nearby I would certainly be a regular!

Pros: service, food-you name it

Cons: not enough people know about it...?

I cannot imagine why people are lined up out the door at the Original Pancake House, while this place sits undiscovered behind the Berlin Inn. The food is well-executed, including both common favorites like corned beef hash and less-common beauties like German pancakes. There are few other places in the city where you can get a baked omelette. The lunch-type offerings are limited, but I almost wish I had been having lunch there today; the garlic yam soup sounded interesting.

The place is clean and inviting from the front door to the bathroom. The staff is both willing and able to provide an enjoyable experience. The food takes a little while, but I've made German apple pancakes, and they can't be done in ten minutes. This place isn't going to knock Zell's off the map, but rather their menu makes a nice complement to places like Zell's and Genie's, each a small place offering a little something different from the other, but all doing what they do very well.

In short, if you like breakfast and haven't tried Sanborn's, you ought to give them a try. There is a good chance you'll put them in your regular breakfast line-up.

Pros: A unique-but-not-weird menu in a nice space, executed well and with a pleasant manner

Cons: Parking in the neighborhood isn't plentiful; the place is too small for a huge group (e.g., 10)

I am now a regular at Sanborn's on both the weekends and during the week...I can't say enough about this place. It is just so refreshing to have food that is not out of a can. It's the craft of the food that sets this place apart. NOWHERE in the city can you get a whipped egg omelete or a rhubarb german pancake!

Everything time I have eaten here my food was delivered in a timely fashion and every dish I have tried has blown me away. The Corned Beef Hash is to die for as is the Huevos Rancheros. I usually like to polish one of those off with a "smoochie"--a drink they concocted on Valentines day of which I am since addicted to.

The word is out on Sanborn's -- it has gotten busier since I have become a regular, especially on weekends, but i've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get a table (which is AMAZING for a weekend breakfast!).

For the price (most dishes are between 6 and 9 bucks!!) , there is really no better breakfast place in portland IMO, and i've tried a ton of 'em in NE, SE, and SW. So...get those pancakes while they are hot people!

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened and found the atmosphere warm, friendly, and charming. It is a small restaurant with attentive staff and delicious food. From huevos rancheros to mango pancakes, there is plenty of variety from which to choose. Weekends are busy so get there early! This restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday until 2:00PM. In the summer they have the patio area open. It is surrounded by flowers and gated. What a way to enjoy a sunny summer morning! I recommend this place to all my friends.

This was my first time at Sanborn's, and sorry to say will be my last. I was very impressed when I walked in and took in the atmosphere, but after waiting 40 minutes for my food none of that mattered anymore. I was in a party of four and the only hot entree was the omelet my friend had. Three of our dishes were luke warm at best and honestly not that good. I noticed everyone around us had a long wait as well, so maybe that is the norm for this location. For me I like my food in a decent amount of time and for it to taste as if it just came off the grill.

I've been going to Sanborn's for two years now and have loved it every single time. The food is not only great tasting, it looks picture perfect. I took a picture of my wife next to her huevos ranchos. The cook, Russ, always comes out and greets us with his chef's hat and a smile. I also like the location on a little street surrounded by old homes and pleasant shops.

Cons: tough parking on weekends

Oh, beautiful little family restaurant across from the Aladdin! You have such nice mango pancakes. I like the little piano and the fact that I always get whatever local food I can get.

We eat breakfast out every Saturday morning. Since moving to Portland five years ago we have tried every recommended breakfast place in the metro area, and for the past year we have eaten nowhere else but Sanborn's. When an Oregonian review recently gave the mantle for "best German pancake" to another place, we just shook our heads. They certainly had never been to Sanborn's. My test breakfast for any new place is corned beef hash and eggs; Sanborn's serves the best ever. The staff is super friendly, including Russ and "Mom" Sanborn in the kitchen). They are happy to accomodate our idiosyncracies (e.g., "burnt" bacon for my wife and mango sausa for my scrambled eggs). The ambience of the place is perfect for a pleasant start to the day. I almost hate to write this review, knowing that it will contribute to competition for attention from Rebecca and Jodie and the rest of the staff, but darn it they deserve it. (Oh, and if they have the breakfast chili rellenos on special, get 'em).

I have been there several times now and tried various things on the menu. Everything was delicious, but my particular favorite is the Kelly Street Special, which they made at my request with kalamata olives instead of mushrooms. My book group held our meeting there over brunch and everyone was delighted with the variety and quality of the food and the friendliness of the service. I have been to breakfast or brunch at places all over the city such as Bread and Ink, Hawthorn Cafe, Cadillac Cafe, Kennedy School, Edgefield, etc. I have found none better than Sanborn's. Last summer I bicyled there with a friend and we sat on the patio behind the water feature. It was easy to watch our bicycles and enjoy our food.

We checked out Sanborns for Sunday Brunch this afternoon. I was a bit shocked and slightly concerned that there was almost no line and shouldn't have been any (there were plenty of open tables...no one had seated people yet).

However, our worries were unfounded. The food was great and the service was extremely friendly. My only complaint was how long it took to get our order taken and how long it took to get our food. I looked around, but all the waitresses seemed to be going a million miles a minute, so we couldn't figure out what the problem was. Then, realizing that there were a bunch of tables upstairs and a full set down stairs, we figured there were about three or four servers having to wait thirty to forty tables and also act as hostess. All-in-all, the girls there were doing a great job doing all they could do.

Perhaps someone didn't make it in this morning or perhaps someone was sick, but if this is the normal size of the staff, the management needs to consider upping their staff levels.

As a big fan of breakfast i've eaten at most of the spots in portland. Sanborn's is simply a cut above anything you will find here in town. Since it's family owned the staff all go out of their way to make the customer feel at home. I love seeing the families with kids (playing with the little toys that the staff gives them), I guess there just aren't that many breakfast places that have the space to be family-friendly. After talking to the waitress, it turns out that all the food is made with fresh ingredients and seasonal fruit. What I like most is that I can go on a weekday and have a gourmet breakfast for 7 or 8 bucks and pretty much have the restaurant to myself!

I just recently found out that they serve sandwiches and homeade soups for lunch so i'll have to go back and try those...

Kudos to Sanborn's -- Eat there before the rest of Portland finds out about it...I guarantee you won't be dissapointed!

I love breakfast!!! I have actively sought out the best breakfast in Portland. During my quest I have gone to most(if not all) of the highly rated breakfast places. So I was very pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon Sanborns. The service was great! The ingredients were fresh!

During my last visit I had the corned beef and hash. Unfortunately at most restaurants this is a dish that often comes out of a can and looks like something Fido would eat. The corned beef hash at Sanborns is excellent! The seasonings are well balanced and the overall flavors are great! On the same visit my wife had their blueberry pancakes with blueberry compote. The pancakes were fluffy and compote was not too sweet. She said it was the best she has had in town.

Overall I think Sanborn's is a great find. I give them my personal five out of five stars rating!!!

The food is to die for. The staff are friendly. The business is family owned and operated. I have eaten here several times and have never had a bad experience or a bad meal. Check out the options on the scrambles/omelets and on the breakfast burritos. The fruit German pancakes are the best I have ever eaten and with seasonal fruits added to the mix you always have a pleasant addition to the menu. If you have not eaten here you should. You don't know what you are missing.

Sanborn's has quickly become my favorite breakfast spot. The decor is 1920's art deco without being overdone or pretentious. Their breakfasts cover the gauntlet of traditional favorites, including eggs benedict, scrambles, and waffles, but also offer unique and flavorful options, including hash, amazing blue corn pancakes, a breakfast burrito with nopalitos (cactus), and to die for German pancakes with seasonal fruits like pear, peaches, and kiwi. Beverages include fresh-squeezed OJ, mimosas, and killer coffee. The service is attentive without being too in-your-face, and the servers are very friendly, helpful and accomodating.

It is amazing to me that this place has not become over-crowded all the time! Everything on the menu is delicious, the atmosphere is welcoming and low key, and the chef will even venture out into the dining room to make sure you loved your food. I love this place!

Sanborn's has only been open a year, but it has quickly become THE breakfast place for those in the know! The decor is upscale, the staff is friendly, and the food is amazing. The fruit German pancakes, the ovenbaked omelettes, the juevos rancheros, the eggs Benedict . . . and you can never go wrong by ordering the specials. Although the clientele is growing, you can still usually get a table without waiting.
