I used to love this place like no other. But, based on several visits I can't face it again. I've revisited about 3 times after my first bad experience hoping that that latest visit would absolve it of all past sins. Nope. And I'm not really a fussy eater. Greasy spoons have their place in the world and with me. This place didn't even do comfort food close to passable. Cold biscuits and gravy? Raw potatoes? I think maybe there was a disgruntled chef (ok, cook) or something for it to be so obviously bad.

I make these comments because I would absolutely love it to get turned around and not just shut down. PLEASE CHANGE BLUE JAY!

Pros: Close to my home

Cons: Cold & bland

When you are looking for food to make a bad day go away- heavy and hot, then Blue Jay is your local answer! Fried chicken & mac and cheese in a slow, down to earth environment. The lighting is dim and the music is hip- a great place to stay hidden when you want to go out, but not be "scene".

I went there on Friday night with 3 friends around 8 p.m, it was slightly busy, but we were seated after a 5 minute wait. The atmosphere is very casual with a "helpful" and friendly feel (the server who waited on us seemed very happy to be there, not a typical San Francisco server attitude). Now the food, it was GOOD. The menu is where you pick your desired meat or fish with a sauce and you get to choose two side ingredients (that is the fun part because you can tag a bite from a friends plate). My friends and I ordered lots of different things and we had a blast trying the different things, I suggest the Snapper with the green beans and mashed potatoes. We then shared a pecan minature pie, it was to die for. For the tab... I felt it should have been more for the service and food I got. Downside, the bathrooms are kind of unusual. I will return soon

Friendly service, live jazz, casual, and unpretentious. This is not a fancy place. You don't go here for pomp and circumstance, you go for simple good food. I've been several times and taken several different friends. The fried chicken is consistently the best thing on the menu.

Yes... what an improvement. I went there about a year ago a couple of times because it was the local buzz and I was very disappointed in the rude service and average food (not to mention, so slow to get anything). I vowed to never return until a friend convienced me about a owner change that had made it so much better. Brunch with three other friends was so "overallly" good, friendly and sincere service, very tasty food (especially the blueberry pancakes) that took no time at all to get and great orange mimosas. I was amazed at how fast the place moved but was never rushed.

I heard great things but was I pretty disappointed. The food was cold and the wait staff was pretty clueless. They were nice people but forgot multiple items and left us sitting there waiting for the bill. I probably wouldn't go back.

I went to the Bluejay once months ago, for breakfast, and I loved it. The atmosphere is classic SF casual hip, and the menu was full of organic ingredients appealingly prepared. Recently I was in the neighborhood and stopped in excitedly for an early dinner.Though the places were all freshly set, the counter beneath them was sticky and dirty. The corn muffins were stale and tasted as if they'd been stored in a plastic bag in a big smelly fridge. The chicken somehow came off it's rotisserie with pale, flabby skin which was not so cleverly disguised by an over-use of parsley garnish; it tasted reheated yet it was cold in the center. The beef dish was "tough as old boots" and swimming in a watery tomato broth. And the bathroom! Don't get me started. Our waitress didn't bother to ask about the food, but I suspect she already knew. It was a terribly disappointing experience for a place that had such promise, and it made me sad enough that I had to open a Citysearch account and write this review.

I am from the South...the real south and found the fried chicken to be second only to my mom's. The mashed potatoes were hot, thick, and had a few lumps that confirmed they were made from scratch...just wonderful! My wife had the skirt steak which was done to the correct temp and tender. We loved the corn bread and the casual atmosphere. The prices cannot be beat. We will be back again often!

Ok, where should I start.
1)The small menu selection should have been a clue but since I paid 3 dollars to cross the bridge I stayed.
2) It took forever for us to get menus
3) I asked for my bacon to be crispy and they brought it out dam near R A W and when I brought to the servers attentions he did not seem to understand what I was saying. Ok, he took it I guess to cook it and never brought it back.
3) The grits taste like paste with cheese.
4) QUESTION? Should I always have to ask for a coffee refill?
Basiclly. after eating at The Blue Jay Cafe I would rather eat worms!!

i keep not going back to this place because the catfish breading sucked up the water from the yams it was served on -- waterfish! my date's pork arrived cool to the touch. and we had to ask for butter to put on the cornbread. so yeah these guys don't really get it.

Yuck. I've had a few meals at the Blue Jay but tonight was the worst. Biscuits? They were served cold, and tasteless. I guess if you want a good biscuit, you have to get up early and head to Eddy's across the street. The gumbo had one shrimp in it and was 90% canned stewed tomatoes. Again, just yuck. To top it off, the manager (owner?) refused to come out to talk to us when we asked to meet him - we're a non-profit in the neighborhood and want to bring out board in for regular pre-meeting meals and also had a letter to drop off about an annual silent auction. After our taste test tonight, we'll be heading somewhere else for our weekly meetings.

Despite the painfully slow service in the past I have continued to dine at the Blue Jay Cafe. The food although not true southern was still quite satisfying and the price was right. After my last visit though, I will not be returning. The mac and cheese used to rival the dish that is served at HOME at Church and Market. Now, it is a sad watery dish of powered cheese and noodles. I ordered creamed corn tonight and what arrived was a boatful of canned corn floating in a sea of coffee creamer. The catfish, decent but nothing to brag about. Overall, I was really disappointed that the quality of the food has taken a horrible turn for the worst. So, combined with poor service, exceptionally long wait for food and sad presentation of ingredients I will not be going back.

If you like fried chicken then this is the place for you! I have never had better! And the biscuits! And the cornbread! This spot is great for a weeknight dinner of comfort food. I take all out of town guests here when they are visiting. The restaurant also rotates funky art so there is always something new to look at. The wait staff is always super friendly (and I do concur that they are mighty cute-darin0831) And don't be afraid to take whatever you don't eat home, even the leftovers are heaven! No pretension, just nice people and good food!

Hmmm..... some of these reviews make me want to doubt my next potential visit. Maybe there are some genuine bad experiences but give this place a try for yourself. Some of these reviewers seem like a bunch of haters. I loved it there. The food I had was the egg sandwich. Really good biscuit. The decor, the staff, the ambiance, I all loved. Maybe I have low standards but I am pretty damn picky and have a hard time believing it was a fluke. All my friends say to try the fried chicken, which I plan on doing during my next visit.

So many things wrong; not enough room to go into detail. Service is slow. The o.k.; fried chicken (dry/battery); sweet potato pie (missing bottom crust). The bad; burnt biscuit; sweet cornbread; overseasoned crabcakes w/sweet sauce; mac/cheese (overcooked pasta/undercooked white sauce); seafood gumbo (shellfish yes;catfish no). The worst; red beans/rice (from vegetables not being cooked w/beans to zucchini/mushrooms that SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN IN BEANS to optional shrimp being offered. Walk a couple of blocks down to the fast food place instead.

This place is supposed to have the best fried chicken in the city, but it really isn't anything special. The service is really slow as there is only one server and the vibe is less than friendly. I have been to this place a couple of times and have never really been too impressed. Save some money and go to KFC.

Blue Jay Cafe serves up southern inspired bistro food. I had the crabcake sandwich with spicy aioli and fries. The sandwich was rich and flavorful and very satisfying. The service was a bit casual for my liking and the coffee was not great but otherwise I was very happy with the lunch.

PROS: Good southern rich food
CONS: service a little slow, coffee was old

I've been here several times since I've moved into the new hood. Everytime it's been very good, both food and service. Finally a SF joint with good food that doesn't charge 15.95 to 21.95 for everything. The food isn't excellent, but it's very good and satisfying. Although I have to say their fried chicken and mac and cheese is pretty darn tasty and addictive!

I just don't get the negative reviews this restaurant gets-this place is great!!! My husband and I have gone quite a few times and have always had good service. I do admit it could be a little slow but this joint is laid back. Jay has personally served us and he's a cool and laid back kid of guy. I think the key is to sit at the counter not the tables and we've never sat at the tables. The food is sooo good especially the sweet potato souffle with marshmallows. We've almost tried everything on the menu and never had a bad meal. The live DJ is a treat and spins some cool fat beats.

Lunchtime today. We arrived at 12:15pm. We ordered. The place had just cleared with the exception of one other table.

It took 50 minutes to get our food! After 40 minutes of waiting, my co-diner was informed that there was no meat for the sandwich she ordered. (Why didn't they know that *before* 40 minutes had gone by? There was nobody else there!)

The worst part was, there was *no* acknowledgement of the slowness. Nobody came up to our table to say, "Sorry, we are running behind" or "Sorry we have a new chef" or WHATEVER. Nada.

Tooooo slow for lunch hour and too much lack of interest and awareness of hte customers.

We had dined here before and it has slowly but surely gone downhill since it first opened. What a disappointment.

I just read some of the negative reviews and I must admit, I don't get it. I tried this restaurant (before reading the reviews on this site) and had an excellent meal. I had the catfish served with sweet potatoes and it was delicious. My partner's pork chops were outstanding. The pecan pie for the desert was the best pecan pie I have ever had. The service wasn't extraordinary but it certainly was not bad. All at a great price. I was quite pleased.

Popped in for lunch at about 1:30pm and the place was very quiet. Had three pieces of fried chicken, fries dusted with spice and a beer for under $8. Chicken was tender and covered in a very light rosemary batter, fries were above average. My server was attentive and patient, not sure what earlier complaints were about. Decor is funky, there are some nice prints and a silkscreen on the wall and some decent music. Overall a fine spot for a quick and inexpensive bite, but judging from the earlier reviews, there may be service issues when busy...

Although the food and music are each great, the service is ridiculously terrible.

The bartenders and servers often forget (for laughably long periods of time) that they have customers. Considering that this restaurant is beyond tiny, such inaction is totally inexcusable.

Blue Jay's management should fire the wait staff and start over with people who understand that good food and great ambiance coupled with horrendous customer service is a failing equation.

I will not return again.

I convinced some friends to try this restaurant after having been there once (though I was overcharged the first time I went and, thankfully, caught the mistake before I paid). I thought I would try again because the fish is pretty good. When will I go back? Never. The service was excruciatingly slow. Long story, but in sum we waited for more than an hour to be seated even after other tables had paid and could have moved to the bar; it was one more hour before our food arrived; my friend's fried chicken was uncooked; and there were no apologies for the long wait. The restaurant seems mismanaged or not managed. It's too bad because it really could be a successful place.

first time in my life I've given a 0% tip.

the service (bartender and waiter) was unbelievably slow, inattentive, and unapologetic.

- we waited at the bar for about 15 minutes before getting the baertender's attention, another 10-15 for the 3 drinks to come.
- we waited over an hour to get seated, because the waiter's friends lingered at that table an extra 30-45 minutes.
- the waiter was slow to take the order, and our food arrived after another hour -- 2 full hours after we'd arrived. no apology, no free appetizer, nothing.

we really tried to be polite and gentle in asking for a table and food throughout, but the waiter and bartender just stared blankly and didn't apologize.

a friend had warned me not to go, and now i see why

Really bad service. Unless you're the DJ, don't expect anyone to care that you're there or to make you feel welcome. The food was hit or miss but cheap. We liked the mango avacado salad. My salmon special was well prepared but the sauce was bland and gooey. The fried chicken got a good review from my Mississippi-born companion, though he disliked the super bland mac 'n cheese side. The cookie for dessert was one of those nasty cafe cow patty things.
I love the location; and while the decor could take some cues from Blue Plate, it's fairly comfortable. I wish this could be our new neighborhood haunt but, we're not likely to return.

We ordered the house specialty, which is the fried chicken, but to our disappointment, the chicken has flavor whatsoever. In fact, you would find better tasting fried chicken from Albertson's as theirs have seasonings and spices. We also ordered the grill pork chop - dry and overcooked; it was like eating dry, overly cooked white chicken. The pork chop was so dry and overcooked that it took awhile to cut a piece and the meat was so white like chicken breast.

This place is overrated and the food is really below average, given their lower prices make up the 'below average' rating.

Cons: , shady neighborhood

.

I went with a group of friends to try it out and experience some good soul/comfort food. It was disappointing all around... especially the buffalo wings, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, and biscuits. They were all cold arriving at the table, and really bad. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all.

Pros: Ice Tea, Fried Chicken

Had a horrible experience with their breakfast/brunch service. After waiting for a longer-than-necessary period of time for our food (my eggs were cold by the time his french toast was ready), the server brought honey instead of syrup (I guess they keep them in the same containers) which he didn't notice either until his french toast was drenched in it. We called the server over and she didn't quite know what to do about it, so we suggested she fire another serving. Ten minutes later she came back to tell us they were out of french toast. We have had reasonably decent breakfasts there, always kind of hit or miss depending on how busy they were, but we've never gone back after this experience.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: , Ditzy servers, Unprepared kitchen

the food has gotten better and better and is a great deal. the people are nice and the place is fun. the fried chicken is tasty and crispy and the mango/blue cheese salad is always a winner. go check it out if you haven't already. I eat there every week...yum.

This place doesn't know the first thing about Southern or Soul food. I was actually embarassed that they believed and people who eat at this place believe that this is southern cooking. I have spent a good part of my life in the south and the food is fried, fattening and fantastic. This place had none of it. Don't waste your time. It is a major disappointment.

I went there 2 times. Both times the food came soo slow which led me to conclude they have no idea what they are doing in the kitchen. I asked the waitress who the chef was and she did not know what to say. actually it is a resturant without a chef, i guess they get it out of books or something.

Prices are ok but not super great, the sald, very small portion is pricy for the serving amount.
good luck for them, but the city has way bettr places, I have no idea how they are getting all these raving revieus, my expeince might have been diffrent

Just got back from a meal at Blue Jay Cafe, and we were pleasantly surprised. The catfish was outstanding and portions were very large! Good atmosphere, house music was good on a Saturday night, service was so-so, but not a reason to stay away. We were also happy with the price: we had an appetizer of crab cakes, entree, two desserts, and two sodas for $29. Give a try.

I loved this place. The resturant is warm and inviting, and the food was delicious! So good. The homemade Pecan Pie was mouth watering, and freshly made drinks are very refreshing. I can't wait to go back. Though it is alittle more then I would generally spend dinning out , but it is SO worth it!

I'm always excited when I see a new restaurant sprout around my neighborhood. This restaurant looked promising. Alas, it didn't live up to my expectations. The service was very aloof. The food greasy and forgettable. The prices seem low, until you start eating then you'll realise that it's pretty pricey for what they were serving.
Nice ambience, though.
I think it's worth a try if you're not expecting too much.

Forget the negative reviews, this place rocks. Everyone in my group of four had a great time, loved the neighborhood ambience, and thought the food was fantastic. We had, amongst other things, the fried chicken, meatloaf, crab cakes, and pecan pie, all of which were excellent. The fried chicken was definitely not too greasy, but at the same time it was still fried up nice and crispy. In fact we were all commenting on that specifically at the time. The service is admittedly slow, so don't go if you're in a rush. (But once you get a table they do bring out a quick plate of cornbread!) It was busy, and this was on a Wed. night.

I'd had high hopes for this place, but the food was only so-so and was totally negated by the disorganized and shabby service. They got 2 of 4 orders wrong and then brought all the food (including the 2 missing appetizers we were waitin for) at the same time. The beer and wine list looks long, but they only had half of each in stock. The red-beans and rice was like Uncle Bens. The southern comfort food thing is hot right now, but there are far better places in SF.

My wife and I just discovered a neighborhood gem! The food is one of the best values we've found in SF, and we dine out A LOT! Check out the special roast chicken w/2 sides for only $14.95 to go! Jay is the waiter and very friendly. The food is very good southern comfort food, and comes in big portions. Since we've discovered it, I've had lunch and dinner there in the same day and one day will probably have breakfast, lunch and dinner there in the same day! We go about once or twice a week now and recommend it highly! Am told that the wait can be a bit frustrating on a Friday or Saturday evening, so we always get our food to go during those days. Try them out, we think you'll enjoy as much as we do!
