Delicious vegetarian options. Great friendly staff every time I have gone. Recommend the aloo gobi and the biryani rice. The food came out cool once and they had no issues with reheating it for us so we could enjoy it. Give them a chance, they have always come through for me

Pros: well priced, not greasy, easy to get a table

Cons: slow kitchen, uncomfortable seating (hard wooden benches)

I love Indian food and was excited to eat here after viewing it on a local restaurant review tv show. I left feeling like a rube for eating there.
I didn't mind that the portions were ridiculously small because we couldn't eat what was delivered to our table. It was inedible.
Curry Grant/ chicken curry = 3 small pieces of RAW (pink/red) CHICKEN in a soup of boring curry sauce.
Nan = 1 cold & dry piece - no chewiness
tamarind & mint chutneys were watery & bland
The vegetable pakora was greasy and small
We ordered the Chopra okra mild b/c I'm pregnant & keeping it mild to medium for now- it came spicy - so spicy that it tasted flat.
The waitress noticed that we didn't eat much of the little food that was delivered to our table so asked sheepishly if we wanted to order more dishes - "how about desert?" We thanked her & asked for the bill.
The service was ok.

Pros: the place was empty, so we didn't have to wait

Cons: raw chicken, small portions, boring use of spices

Not the best Indian place in town! What a place not to dine on a Friday nite, Saturday nite or any other nite. We waited 20 minutes for the menu's, waited 25 minutes for them to take the order and then waited a full 60 minutes before our food arrived. The chicken tika masala, was all sauce with 3 pieces of chicken, the price $10.00! We ordered Aloo Gobi, they had run out, they sent out masala pumpkin...? Chicken Kariahi was all masala again with 3 pieces of chicken, the price 10! We ordered Lamb Birayani, they served us Chicken, the rice was white rice with chicken masala sauce and the rice was half cooked. I'm sorry to say, we will never visit this place again or recommend to our friends. PAKWAN on 16th & Valencia has more VALUE for your money and the FOOD is fantastic!!!

This is my favorite Indian resturant in the city. You can actually taste the difference in each dish. The best part is that" it NOT greasy" when compared to other indian resturants. we order atleast once a week and each time the taste is consistent. I really really like thier samosas and thier vegetarian dishes and Aloo naan. SSSSSoooooo Good. oh don't forget the chai...it's complimentary.
I wish they had more ventilation in the dining area, it gets a bit smokey and congested.

This place has good Indian food - nothing spectacular service or food wise but it is a solid effort. Food is not too spicy which suits me just fine

If you want a memorable meal you should order the following:

- Chicken Tikka Masala
- Karahi
- Allo Gobi
- Daal Maash
- Plain Rice
- Plain Naan
- Aloo Naan

The flavors from these dishes compliment each other so well that your taste buds will love you. Unlike most restaurant meals, these dishes have their own unique flavor and texture but end up being just the right pairing--like gorgonzola cheese spread on a slightly tangy green apple. Trust me. Once you have this meal, you'll be craving it at least weekly!

We showed up at 7:00 on a Saturday night with no reservations, and the place was empty! A little disappointing, but our experience made up for it! The atmosphere is bright and casual, and the service was fantastic! We brought our 2-year old, and the staff was VERY accommodating and friendly. Ordered garlic naan, veggie pakora, curries, chicken tikka masala, and all was good. Not fantastic, but very good. There is a liquor store across the street, and Rotee allows you to bring in wine with no corkage fee. We would go again!

No joke, this place is very very good!!! So good I yearn it, I smell it in my dreams, I drool just thinking about it (drip, drip...see I told you). My absolute must eats are the chicken tikka masala, Daal Gosht, Aloo Palak, Garlic Naan and the Mango Chutney. The food arrives at your table piping hot in very shareable portions. The service is swift and very welcoming. The kitchen is out in the open so you can see the chef prepare the food and see how fresh the ingredients are.

Best Chicken Tikka Masala. It is so delicious and makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The parking is very trying and can make you just give up but don't do it. The parking challenge is worth it. Seat yourself, there should be menus on the table and if not, grab one at the front counter. When you're ready to order, head up to the front counter and order your food. You pay for your food after your meal. The price is about $8 average per dish.

After discussing with friends their favorite Indian neighborhood restaurants (Haight/Western Addition/TL) and reviewing a few places online, we decided to get food delivered from Rotee. Had a little bit of trouble ordering over the phone as their menu strays a bit from traditional Indian fare (mostly in the name of the dish) but the mgr. happily got on the phone to complete my order.

Food was good but not great, could have been spicer for my taste eventhough I asked for Spicy. Garlic naan was pretty sorry and the accompaning sauces runny. I always hate to see meat on the bone in curries (both the chicken aloo & the special lamb had it) cuse the bone to meat ratio is so high, you don't really get much meat. I rather go vegetarian than meat in this case.

Overall I'd give it an 8, price was fair and we have some leftovers : ) Next time though, I will consider walking down to Indian Oven for take-out or ordering from Tandoori Mahal downtown. I'm still on the fence about which restaurant delivery is best for those last-minute Indian food cravings...?

After reading the cute menu, I just had to order from this place. There is a bit of a minimum for delivery. The aloo roll is the Indian version of the falafel. Although I asked for it without cream, the aloo muttar was heavy and sweet with huge pieces of potato. If I needed Indian, I'd order from here though I'd look elsewhere first...

Honestly, I have never eaten indian food that needed salt and pepper. The food was plain; it had that "missing something" flavor to it. And that is simply unacceptable. And no kashmiri nan? C'mon!

I think Citysearch transposed their numbers when listing their rating for this place. It's far closer to a 3.9 rather than a 9.3. We ordered a couple of lamb dishes - the meat was so tough, only a chainsaw could have penetrated it. The samosas we had for appetizers were feeble at best. Only visit this place if massochism is your thing.

Rotee used to be okay when it first started. However, the food has been deteriorating steadily since. I live very close to the place, and drop by occasionally if I am too hungry to walk more than a block. But after my last trip, I think I've had enough!

In the last visit, the okra was lacking salt, the aloo naan had almost no aloo at all, the lamb tasted bland (it is very hard to make Indian lamb bland), and the chicken tikka boti was totally lacking flavor. I had to put salt and lemon on everything to get any taste..

I do like the ambience, the owner(s) are friendly, but if you want decent Indian/Pakistani food, then there are much better places around!

Look at the number of Indians you see in this place. None! May I say no more...

We're new to indian food. i know, it's hard to believe. We went there with seasoned india-food-o-philes to ingraciate us to the menu. We've been back everynight since! The TIKKA MASALA Sauce is ADDICTIVE! I don't eat meat... they made a bowl of sauce just for me, AND made a boti wrap with the onions, naan & that sauce... not on the menu! Soooo accomidating! So friendly and nice. The plain naan is only $1. Even at Rainbow Grocery- the naan is $2.59. You can't beat their prices! The lamb biriyani is great (according to my meat eating boyfriend) and he always gets the chiken tikka masala. So great! My only problem is that they don't open till 5pm... LOVE IT!

if you have ever eaten at a good Indian place then you would know the difference.
this is safe, not spicy, not flavorful, not dynamic, but safe food that caters to the audience it wants to attract. go there for boring, not much flavor, Indian food.
not what indian food should be.

This is an excellent Indian restaurant. The best part about it is that everything is fresh and always served hot (not sure why people claim they've ever been served a cold meal there - we live right around the corner, go there often, and have never had anything but piping hot food). The masala is ... well you'll just have to try it....there's a reason why you'll see it mentioned in a lot of these reviews. The naan is superb. Their spinach dish isn't the best I've ever had, but I can vouch for all the meats and the sauces. Truly fresh and good. And the service is nothing but friendly and prompt. You won't go wrong here.

lets lay it down as is...we are East Indians, so we know what our food should taste like. Rotee is one of the best Indian restaurants in San Francisco. the food is delicious!! its authentic, so some dishes can be spicy. Rotee's spices are blended well together, unlike some other Indian we've eaten. the Naan bread is excellent: light, fluffy & a bit crispy. any other way - might aswell eat a pizza dough.
once these guys open their other location(s), some "well-known" Indian restaurants will have a run for their money. and here's why - Rotee has great food, is inexpensive, is CLEAN, cool ambience (colors, music)! Go try it!

I have tried a handful of indian restaurants in SF and this has been my least favorite. I can't pinpoint what was wrong, but the taste of the curries was off, maybe old, maybe just not prepared correctly. One plus is that it is fairly mild for those who don't like spicy food.

After Scenic India on Valencia closed a couple years ago, I've been searching for the heir in San Francisco. I've tried almost a dozen places but there was always some significant flaw. Rotee is not perfect, but it's the best overall and I was thrilled to find this place. Best part was the super friendly service. We have a 2 year old who created a little rice storm around her highchair and they could not have been nicer about it.
And such a relief to have an Indian restaurant break out of the decor mold. Bottom line: It's a fun place to eat.

i first went to Rotee just after they opened and have been back almost every week since. they have consistently great food at great prices. i love it. my favorites: chicken tikka masala, chicken or lamb karahi, chicken tikka boti, onion naan, and the free chai.
i get the feeling that some of the bad reviews on this site may be written by jealous people associated with other Pakistani/Indian restaurants. try it for yourself. i bet you'll love it! oh, and by the way, in response to an earlier post, everytime i am there i see several tables of Pakistani or Indian people.

The first few visits to Rotee were enjoyable. However, for the last two meals, the lamb had bones and was fatty, and my friend's food was cold. Cheaper and slightly better saag gosht and chicken tikka masala is available in the nearby lower haight restaurant.

I think Rotee is the Best Pakistani Cuisine in the City. Don't believe me? Go find out yourself... I promise - you won't be disappointed. Their food is delicious, fresh, best in quality and inexpensive. I love it and recommend it to anyone who loves great indian/pakistani food. Try the Kebabs and the Karai Chicken and the yummy Mango Lassi.

Hi,
Me and my two friends went to this top notch resturant once on Saturday afternoon. We drove all the way from Bay Area and it took us an hour. After the parking it was 2:40pm and we were damn hungry. We entered the resturant and there was no one inside. The person came by and said you can't order we are closing at 3:00pm. We said so its :20 min remaining ... he said well then have a take away... we said why!! we are here to eat ... he said well .... sorry ... I can't help you ... if you really want to eat then you should order something which is not BAR-BE-QUE and you should be out of door by 3:00pm.
We said heck with it and we didn't eat there.

Great food, in all the usual dishes. Chicken tikka masala is a must. The menu was pretty funny to read. The space is great, with bright colors that give it a modern, yet casual feel. Such a nice change from the other hole in the wall. The restaurant also takes a Bollywood spinoff approach, with Pakistani version visuals, reflective of Lollywood. Movie posters, and other interesting photos on the walls.

I don't think the people who have highly recommended this place have ever eaten a decent curry. It is appauling. Our meat dishes had about 90% bones and 10% meat and I am not exaggerating. The little bit of meat was mainly fat too. A decent curry house would NEVER serve a boney curry - in fact, probably wouldn't even cook with bones. It was also pretty cold as well on arrival.

The food was very average, at best. The chicken curry had only 3 very small pieces of chicken in it and nothing else. The eggplant dish was bland. The staff was rude. Why bother when there are so many other great Indian restaurants?

The food was very average, at best. The chicken curry had only 3 very small pieces of chicken in it and nothing else. The eggplant dish was bland. The staff was rude. Why bother when there are so many other great Indian restaurants?

I love indian food!! Went to Rotee, due to the reviews and was a little disappointed. The chicken tikka masala was EXCELLENT. However, the vegetable biryani and raita were disappointing. The 'vegetable' biryani consisted of carrots, onions and about 3 green beans and an OVER-DOSE of mint. The cucumber raita was way too runny and also had way too much mint in it. I would go back but, stick to the the chicken, plain rice and naan.

Obviously people on Citysearch aren't exactly up on what real Indian food is if they think this place is legit. Oily, greasy, lukewarm food is not a signature of Indian cuisine, believe it or not. There's no service at all, non-existant atmosphere and most importantly, substandard food. I can name 3 places in the City alone w/ better grub. Don't waste your time or money here. It's truly a joke.

First of all, this restaurant is not full service. Grab a table, look at the menu, and then go up to the counter to order. Food was excellent and prices are low. We had the Onion Nan which I highly recommend, and we also had the chicken tikka masala, and a lamb sandwich wrap. I wouldn't get the sandwich again, because I thought the lime flavor? with the cabbage was overwhelming. I have had much better indian wraps. However the Nan was Excellent, and the Curry was good.

TASTE: Delicious food -- we mopped every last drop of the the sauces with naan! Good variety available. When asked, they adjusted the spice levels. Note: I've eaten Indian food in over 6 cities in India as well as all over the Bay Area.

AMBIANCE: Unpretentious, casual, clean dining experience with surprisingly nice decor. My friends had a comfortable and lively time. Great for groups, casual dates, take-out or solo-dining (I observed these types of customers).

SERVICE: Responsive! First, when given the menu, we were clearly told this is not a full service place. Second, the staff doesn't hover around, which allows for privacy. Last, a simple hand wave was adequate for service.

PRICE: Best in town! Clearly cost savings of not having a full service restaurant are passed to customers! Tasty entrees like these are typically well over $10 each at other restaurants.

We ate dinner here last week and I think this claim may be a bit far fetched. I have eaten here twice and think that bangin' bartha is exceptional. The best eggplant dish I have had in the city. I cannot say the same for the tikka masala or the nan. It is a good cheap eat, but so is Nan 'n' Chutney down the street!

First off, let me just say that the Tikka Masala is unreal. My girlfriend and I are big time Tikka Masala freaks and we were both blown away the first time we had the Tikka Masala here. By far the best thing on the menu. Anyway, the serivce here is virtually nonexistant, but don't let that come between you and the Tikka Masala. The food is amazing and it's also CHEAP (?!?!?!). One of our favorite places to eat out in San Francisco. Oh, and don't forget the rice pudding!

although you can tell that the staff still seem to show clues that they haven't been open for very long, i had a pleasant lunch. the food was good and the price was decent - i can't say that the food holds a higher standard than most indian/pakistani restaurants i've been to around here, but it was good nonetheless. i wish they had a little more chunks of meat in their dishes though. the staff was kind and the interior was clean with bollywood movie posters on the wall.
if you're in the area and up for indian food, try it out
:)
oh yea... the menu was fun to read... some humorous descriptions on the food items

The place to dine at if you're craving for Indian/Pakistani food. I like the atmosphere there. It's clean, fun and hip - a cool place to dine with friends. What's more, the food taste great and you DON'T have to pay a bundle! If you like eggplants - then you must try this place - their eggplant dish is awesome.

The best Indian-Pakistani food you can ever eat - They are losing money feeding exotic tasting food at such low prices. You would be a fool not to go!

I am a vegetarian and I recommend the Naan, Aloo Wrap, and Paneer Tikka Masala.

Try it!

If you value awesome taste, nice ambiance, and great value -like any normal person - then you gotta check out Rotee! I've been to many Indian/Pakastani restaurants in the Bay Area, but this is the place I love the most. The taste, the prices, and friendly staff just can't be beat! Definitely worth your while to drop in if you're in the City.

Rotee just opened and I've already been there twice--two nights in a row to be totally honest. I'm vegetarian so I was very pleased by the good selection of dishes "safe" for me and my vegan friend. The Aloo Gobee is uniquely and exquisitely flavored and the wraps are a huge meal for a low price. Even better than the food, though, is the warm service from Shah and Kumun. In today's fast pace society, it's nice to eat where the owners remember customers and are happy to chine in with a joke or two.

Being a die-hard masala-freak, I am always eager to try a new place. After just two visits (one dine-in and one for takeout) Rotee is already gaining fast on my old favorites. The tikka masala here will make a grown man weep with delight - both the chicken and the sauce are sublime. The naan wraps are tasty and filling. And it's all cheap cheap cheap! Tikka Masala for $6!? Yes!!! This is the best deal in the Haight! While the food is perhaps half a notch below Raja up the block, and the portions a little smaller, the prices make this a much more accessible choice for frequent visits. And Rotee beats the pants off Indian Oven and Naan n Chutney (though NnC is not without its charm!). Welcome, Rotee, may you live long and prosper.
