I have to admit, I've only been to this restaurant once and it was a few years ago. But I was thoroughly unimpressed. The Thai curry we ordered was no better than it would be at a good Thai restaurant. But it was significantly more expensive. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, but I was, again, unimpressed by the food.

PROS: good food
CONS: not worth the price

The food is fantastic - a friend of mine said his sandwich was the best sandwich he's ever eaten. I had a vegan chocolate cake there that was pure heaven. Meat-eaters will like it despite the lack of meat.

The ambiance is 1st class, especially if you get a table with a view of the bay.

The price is high!

PROS: Great vegetarian food, ambiance
CONS: A bit pricey

Greens is one of those places you know about if youve live in San Francisco for more than 3 years.

This place is related to the Green Gulch Farm in Marin, the Tassajara Bakery and the Tassajara Zen Mountain center in Carmel Valley. And, yes the food is grown and cooked by real are Zen-monks and Zen students. How San Franscisco can you get?

Greens is to vegetarian food as Chez Panise is to California Cuisine. They have their own cook-book they are so good.

They are a bit on the fancy side - if you are looking for cheap and food on the run - forget it. These guys are booked days in advance, and its a real fancy dinner scene. If that turns you off there are plenty of other vegetarian options in SF. This one turns out to be the best. Truly a treat for the senses.

I like to take my out of town vegan or vegitarian friends there because they have such a great menu. They have things like "Mesquite-grilled Asparagus Salad" for example.

If all vegetarian food was prepared with as much care and cooked the way they do it here, the world would give up on meat! I'm not a vergetarian, but if there were more places like Greens, I would be.

Check out their web site: http://greensrestaurant.com/

PROS: Quintessential San Francisco Zen Monk Vegan Food
CONS: Not cheap, need reservations.

I love the setting of this restaurant, it sits in Fort Mason, with the bay on one side, very charming at night with views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The decor is very oppulent and the restaurant has a very rich atmopshere.

I must say that the food was absolutely delicious, some of the best that I have ever tasted, I could not believe that it was Vegan.

The chocolate cake was the best I have ever had, and is my new standard, and so far it's unbeatable!!

Great restaurant all round
