OK...I know this isn't a review of Allen's as such but I have no place to blog that'll get the attention that a blog of this type will potentially receive here. Sorry if my choosing to write here bothers you.

Allen's Superstore offers some of the finest inventory along with one of the widest varieties of products in the Hastings area. It's also a store that's in direct competition with Walmart. Further, as most of us Hastings residents know, Allen's is a family owned business.

Small businesses of this type and size are some of the types of stores Walmart would very much like to see die off. Walmart comes into a town like Hastings, builds a superstore and takes business away from stores like Allen's. Hopefully Allen's and others will be able to withstand this loss...many stores nationwide have not.

When money is spent at Allen's, it stays in our community. When it's spent at any major national chain, the money goes who knows where?

If Walmart is successful in killing off smaller stores, when these places go, a piece of the community dies with them. If we do our shopping at any of these national chains, each dollar spent there goes towards the killing off of these stores and whether it happens intentionally or incidentally, the result is the same.

There are other, more humanistic things that Allen's offers. - things that are geared for customer and non-customer alike. As one example, most of us are aware that if a tornado strikes the town, it is Allen's policy to offer their basement as a shelter during such times.

Allen's and stores like them have are and have been an important part of our community for years. When these stores go, it's a very sad thing because they are usually gone for good. With each closing, obviously, we get closer and closer to having less and less choices as to where we can shop. As our choices are eliminated, things move closer and closer towards a monopoly and that is exactly what Walmart's goal is. Eliminate competition. These national chains thrive with the demise of each local store that gets wiped out.

We might want to consider these things as we make our decisions where to shop. Perhaps we wind up saving pennies shopping at Walmart vs. stores like Allen's...but is the bottom line all that different?

We might want to make our decisions as to where we shop thoughtfully. Do we care about having choices? Do we care about keeping our dollars in the community? Do we care about institutions (and Allen's has certainly become one here in Hastings.) Do we like being waited upon when we shop ?? by a staff that is friendly and helpful? These are all things that keep me coming back to this store and places like it. This is what influences me. If Allen's was to fold up, these sorts of features will eventually disappear. Shopping is a bad enough experience for me...such an inconvenience that ANYTHING making it even the least little bit more pleasurable is preferable to somewhere offering mere convenience and a sometimes lower price.

I'll choose Allen's over Walmart whenever I can.

Allen's has a nice variety of goods for sale. They have a pharmacy, clothing department, cards and gifts, clothing, sporting goods, grocery items and a wine cellar. You can basically get everything you need under one roof. They will even beat the advertised sale price of their competitiors in their grocery department. I shop at Allen's quite frequently and I am always happy with the selection of products and service of the employees.

You can get most all your shopping done under one roof and it is family owned. This has been owned by the Allen's family for many years and they have not sold out to big corporations. You can go in and talk to them about things that you want or need in the store. The prices are reasonable and the variety is good.

PROS: good prices
CONS:
