My experience at Idyllwild Arts Academy has been an incredible one. I have decided to make my lifetime career in film. Idyllwild Arts has been a great oportunity to jump-start my career at an early age allowing me to get a lot of working experience and credits that are crucial to get into the business.
Coming to Idyllwild Arts has also been eye opening. Incredible teachers, who have worked and are professionals in the business of film, have taught me how the real world of film works. This will help me in the future to look for a job. I am more prepared to face any obstacles with a mature and professional attitude. Idyllwild Arts is an incredible oportunity that nobody should let go by.

Idyllwild is a unique school, offering opportunities that young men and women dream about! By attending the school, the students not only gain more experience in their field, but are offered great academic courses.
Since I am a Prefect at this school, I have the honor of greeting everyone when they arrive on campus. It is amazing to witness their growth throughout the year. This growth is inspired by the conducive learning environment; dedicated and talented student body and supportive faculty. Due to this atmosphere, you are challenged to pursue your art at a deeper level. If you are passionate about your art, I highly recommend pursuing an educational career at Idyllwild Arts Academy.

Idyllwild Arts Academy is a collective family of artists, moving with their ambitions towards a professional lifestyle in the Arts.

From the second I got to this place I knew that I'd made the right decission. This place is not only a school of very talented people; it's a community that works together to bring more art into the world. By living with people from different art fields (moving pictures, dance, music, etc.) I've been able to appreciate and learn what art is really about. Everyone works really hard and is very passionate about what they do; in Idyllwild Arts, wherever you look you'll find someone who is willing to give you feedback and support.

I'm a third year Junior student who goes to Idyllwild Arts Academy as a classical voice major. I came to Idyllwild when I was 14, and i was actually a musical theater major. When I first came to Idyllwild with very untrained and immature voice, acting, and dancing skills, those faculties helped me a lot with training my skills and get better. Also when I was confused with changing my major, they gave me lot of advices and supported my dream. Therefore I'm really pleased with the educating system, and appreciate what i learned in here. Idyllwild could seem very isolated and also pretty strict. However those are just part of the organized curriculum and to help students focus themselves on what they need to do.

My experience going to Idyllwild Arts Academy was unforgettable... I entered the academy with little understanding of myself as an individual and artist and graduated with a sophisticated creative voice of which I didn't know I was capable. Both the academic and arts teachers were very supportive. I developed strong relationships with many of them, and we still keep in touch. I also formed strong relationships with my classmates, many of whom taught me a great deal both about myself and my artistic discipline. I got the opportunity to show my work with just three other people in a highly professional culminating senior show. Without hesitation, I would reccommend Idyllwild Arts to all those who are looking for a great high school experience, and are passionate about studying the arts.

Idyllwild Arts is the best experience that i have ever encountered. The atmosphere here is great because of the wonderful, talented staff, teachers, and Alumni. Here, you can DEFINITELY expect to be challenged in your Art. As a Dancer here, we push EXTRA hard EVERYDAY. The dance staff here is amazing. We also have tons of guest etchers to come teach also, and believe me when i say the work us out. When you see a dancer on campus, you automatically know because we usually are dancing around on campus. I catch myself doing it all the time! A group of us Dancers come in everyday to stretch and prepare 30 minutes before class just so we can be ready for another challenging day. Its alway tough, but when your in such a loving environment, it's really hard to be down. The support system at the school is amazing too. We have counselors who promise Confidentiality and our own peers who usually are our best friends from the dorm. I Swear, the whole campus is like a family up here. If your looking for a great dance program, i recommend Idyllwild Arts. I have grown so much this year. <3

Idyllwild Arts Academy is an amazing school that gives huge opportunities to everyone who attends it. For me personaly the most important point is that the whole community is like a one big family in which each member helps the others in every possible way. The experience thet all of us get in here is a memory for lifetime. I love everything in this school not only because of all different cultures that meet in here, but because of the happiness of everyone when they cooperate with each other.

I love being in Idyllwild Arts Academy. So far, I've been a student in there for only one year, but it was the best year in my life. Idyllwild Arts Academy is not only a school, it is a community. The environment is incredibly beautiful and all the people are very friendly. I've met a lot of people and made very good friends in the academy. For the Academy, the Art that each student is doing is important. The teachers are amazing and the art programs are on a very high level. Idyllwild Arts also makes you takes steps that you never thought you would be brave enough to take, gives you chances that you never though you could have and makes you the person that you always wanted to be. The Academy faculty is always there for help, but they also trust you and they let you prove yourself as a responsible person. Never in the Academy I felt homesick. It was always a pleasure to come back to school after the break is over and I already can't wait until I come back after Summer Break. In here I have so much friends and so much memories and so many good moments that I will think about through the whole summer. The place, where the school is located is very, very unique. I've never lived in such rich environment. I loved every single moment of my first year and I enjoyed each second of it!

Idyllwild Arts is the best experience I have ever had! It's an amazing opportunity for an artist and high school students willing to be successful and have an amazing time. I have learned a lot this year, not only things about my major and academics; I also have learned how to be independent in another country. Idyllwild Arts is an awesome life experience.

Dear reader,

I am a first-year (freshman) creative writing major and let me just say, the people here at Idyllwild Arts Academy are talented and awesome and amazing and I love them so much,

Idyllwild has helped me to grow in more ways than one. When I was little, I started to write, and in no place have I found more guidance or help than here at school. My peers are as eager as me, some even more, to perform or read or anything. We're in a place of conductive growth and, even being far from my family and friends back in Ohio, I feel at home in this place. Packing my suitcase is bittersweet.

The only reason I'm not giving Idyllwild five stars is because, although it's a wonderful place with wonderful people, nowhere is perfect. If I could I'd give it 4.5 stars, I would.. I've made more friends than I could ever imagine, and it's a great thing to be able to experience not only writing, but visual arts, dance, theater, music, and more. I love going to support my friends in their department performances.

There may not be a lot of us, but we creative writers are a closely-knit group of less than twenty kids each year, usually. I'm only a freshman but I can truly say that my family is right here. Literally, in some sense-- we have our own little family of writers. It's great.

Okay, so you're not gonna love everyone at this school, and not everyone will love you, but seriously? If you're passionate about your art and lucky enough to have the opportunity to come here, then try it out. If it doesn't work out, you're not forced to stay! But remember that your department, whether film, writing, theater, visual arts, dance, inter arts, or music, will love and accept you and your creative abilities. Personally I've loved it!!

Idyllwild Arts Academy has given me one of the best experiences of my life. The teachers in the film department are wonderful and always encouraging us to get involved in film productions. The quality of the teaching, both academically and artistically, is exceptionally magnificent. Whoever comes to this school will make friends that last forever, gain an amazing academical experience and grow as an artist in every possible way there is. IAA has given me the opportunity to find out who I am and the courage to believe in myself and my art.

This school is great, it's very high above average compared to other schools. The food is better than other schools in California, especially. The teachers are amazing and so are the students. Being at IAA, it's like a second home. I love living here as a boarding student. There are also day students that attend IAA and they are also very friendly. The school is a friendly, friendly place. I love attending here. The arts are very high class. The theatre department has very high expectations from the students and they are fulfilled. The dance, creative writing, film, VA, IM, and music departments are all amazing as well.

Idyllwild is great for me because I have a lot of time to practice. The atmosphere is very conducive to focusing and working hard. The campus is beautiful, and I have a fantastic piano teacher. If you're independent and self-disciplined, this place is right for you.

I came to Idyllwild Arts Academy as a dancer in my sophomore year of high school. This school has helped me to grow in ways I didn't think possible. Because it is a small school Idyllwild has a very tight nit community, the students and staff here are all incredibly friendly and supportive, working together to help everyone become the best that they can be. When I first looked in to the school I was worried about being homesick, or not having enough to keep me distracted from the fact that I was away from home for the first time. However, there is hardly a free second here to think of home, let alone miss it. There are student shows or activities on almost every weekend and often during the week nights. We have world class artists coming to put on shows or teach classes, helping to inspire and teach us throughout the year. By allowing students to live, breath and eat their art while still getting a solid academic education Idyllwild has created the perfect environment for the aspireing artist.

To all who may be reading this review - yes, I am a current student at the school, and yes I was asked to write a review on this website by a member of admissions - however, I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't think it was a good idea. I am currently a creative writer at Idyllwild Arts Academy, and I first came here three years ago from Hawai'i to study theatre. The past couple of years have been fantastic - whether the experiences be in studying the various arts, watching performances and going to shows, or simply meeting and becoming friends with the extremely diverse and talented population (students and staff, mind you!). Idyllwild Arts is a great place to grow up and to learn, and the things you experience are unforgettable. Come, it'll change your life! It certainly has changed mine.

i am a flute player from venezuela who came to idyllwild for two years. i think idyllwild is one of the best places for young musicians like me where we can develop our passion for music. the enviroment at school and the poeple are probably the best part of it. i am sure i would have not been where i am right now as a person and musician with all the help and great experiences the school gave me. idyllwild is definately one place i will never forget.

I am attanding the Idyllwild Arts Academy since Fall 2011 as Piano and Jazz Major. I originally am from Germany and I decided to go to the US to study music here. I wanted to find a high school, where I can focus entirely on what i love to do. In my case, it is music, but Idyllwild offers all other kind of art programs as well. There are Dancers, Actors, Filmmakers and Visual Artists from all over the world put together on one campus.
I love the atmosphere of the school, everybody is very dedicated, which gives me even more need and drive to make music.
Beside music, which I study all afternoon, there is a great academic program, which runs everyday until 1PM. The classes are really small and for the first timem, I started to actually enjoy subjects like History or Algebra.
Overall, I could not have imagined a better school at my age for myself and i feel very fortuanete to be a part of Idyllwild Arts!

I started high school at a public high school
and had I not found Idyllwild Arts, I would not look back fondly on my high school years.

I started at he IAA summer program and immediately fell in love with the school; the air is filled with artistic emotion and excitement, and the students are so dedicated to their art, I knew after only two weeks that Idyllwild is where I belonged.

Here at Idyllwild Arts Academy, my day begins at 8:00am with Algebra 2 and goes until 8:30 pm with a Jazz Dance class, and I am in heaven.
The thing about Idyllwild is, I look forward to math (Something I never thought I would say) because my teacher makes math fun, makes me feel good about learning and gives me support (weather it's in the middle of class, or at the daily study block the school gives you) and I'm not afraid to fail.

The same goes for my art classes, I??m not afraid to make a mistake here, because the faculty and other students create a safe artistic environment where I have the ability to grow without restraints.

I would not be the same person had I not found Idyllwild. Here, I??ve learned who I am as a person, how I learn, whom I can relate too, the value of friendships and family, and the importance of art in my life. I love Idyllwild so much and I??m honestly terrified to leave this wonderful, magical school.
Idyllwild taught me to be dedicated and focused while having the time of my life, and I??d just like to thank the school for that. For changing my life. For making me into the person I am today.
For showing me ??Who I Am, and What I Stand For.?

If you have the opportunity and the artistic drive, I urge you to take this chance and maybe, let Idyllwild change you into the person/artist you wish to be.

You won??t regret it.

Coming to Idyllwild Arts Academy has been an experience that I will never forget. I came here as a senior and am now finishing off my post-grad year. I am deeply saddened that I will be leaving this campus in a few weeks but I know that all the memories, skills and lessons learned, and my passion for dance will continue with me past this campus. This campus is filled with people who have the passion for their art and have a passion for other people and to communicate not only with their art, but with their environment. We live on campus surrounded by such beautiful scenary and a faculty that has a passion for their students' art and goals. I truly recommend this school for people who are ready to take on a challenge that will allow them to constantly question their art, their friends, and themselves. Being taught everyday by teachers who have experience and knowledge and only want to share that with you has been more then a pleasure. My passion for dance has grown so much while being in this campus that I am leaving now knowing that dance is what I am going to do for the rest of my life. It is what I love. Here, in this school, with the talented students and faculty, here is where I discovered my passion.

We are the financially destitute parents of a piano prodigy who is close to completing his first year at Idyllwild Arts Academy. We never imagined for a moment that our son would ever have the opportunity to attend this amazing school due to the tuition costs of going to any private boarding school--and IAA is no exception.

He completed his freshmen year at a public high school in Hemet. During the summer we found out that IAA does offer scholarships to kids who show promise and talent. So our son auditioned with the piano faculty and was not only accepted to attend for the coming fall but was given a large enough scholarship so that even a mother on a small disability income and and out of work father were able to manage the portion of tuition required to be paid by parents. All parents are expected to contribute at least a portion of their income to IAA tuition and boarding costs.

It is truly upsetting to read some of the comments which seem to portray IAA as just a money-grubbing-arts-school-monster stealing money out of the pockets of parents with marginally talented kids who can't find a better school. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Our son has placed in the finals and or won important Southern California Competions, was a semi-finalists in the prestigious Spotlight Competition and has managed to still hold down a 4.00 GPA. The arts and music programs offered at Idyllwild are truly world class and the mainline academics are robust and demanding. He is up at 5:45 every morning and gets to bed no earlier than 11:00 pm in order to keep up with the expectations of his music teachers and piano studies and regular academics. The non-arts teachers do not give the arts students a break or let them slide through the academic curriculum. They are not antagonistic--this is an arts academy--after all, but they refuse to short change the kids on academics because not every art student will ultimately find a career in the arts.

We have found faculty and staff at Idyllwild to be, gracious and supportive and incredibly accommodating. They have completely transformed our son from a discouraged, dejected and rejected piano geek into a blossoming, optimistic, up and coming musical force to contend with.

Our son's piano instructor Doug Ashcraft has been simply amazing. We truly love this man for what he has been able to do for our son. He is turning our boy in to a serious artist with bona fide potential to make his mark in music. Our son enjoys his academic instructors, finding them interesting as well as challenging, and absolutely thrives on the boarding school environment and the incredibly gifted kids who are not only accepting, entertaining and in general brilliant and gifted, but who have become his friends.

We simply cannot recommend Idyllwild Arts Academy highly enough. This is a dynamic, exciting, generous school that is achieving excellence in virtually all areas and disciplines it is executing in. Your child will thrive here.

We??re nearing the end of our son??s second year at IAA and couldn??t be happier with the school. Our son is a day student in the Creative Writing program.

First, IAA is a challenging school ??basically two schools in one (academic and art) and will prepare any motivated kid for college. Our son has a partial scholarship, but I have never felt the faculty or the administration has treated us, or him, as ??less than? for not paying full tuition. On the contrary, we've been impressed with the dedication and caring of the teachers and administration in helping our son, as well as the other kids we know at the school, to succeed both academically and in their chosen art form.

To me, it says a lot when my son comes home talking about ideas he learned in his history class, or excited about a project for literature. The curriculum is truly helping him develop his critical thinking skills and passion for learning.

As far as the creative writing department, imagine a program where kids learn in small classes, share and critique each other??s work, do independent studies, read their polished work for the school at large, and where every year six professional writers stay for a week and conduct workshops. The exposure these students get to working professionals (who are just as thrilled to be working with these talented kids) is invaluable. The classes offered are diverse and seem more like college classes: Latin American Lit, Detective Fiction, Screen Writing, Adaptations, etc.

The other departments use the same strategy of hiring experienced faculty and then bringing professionals up the mountain and having them work with the students on their plays, their visual art, their dance, their music, etc. We attend many of the shows from all of the departments and I have to say it is one of the reasons we don??t miss the culture of the big city ?? the caliber of the students?? work constantly amazes us. Part of their success is due to the school choosing talented students, but talent is not enough. The school challenges and supports them ?? and makes them apply themselves to their work.

In addition to the school itself, Idyllwild is a beautiful, friendly community, sitting in a valley reminiscent of a little Yosemite.

I??ve read the other reviews of the school and ultimately think the best way to decide if the school is right for you or your child, is to visit. No school is a perfect fit for every student. If your child is serious about an art form (or two!), I think it would definitely worth your while to check out the school.

Sending my daughter to Idyllwild Arts Academy was the biggest decision we've ever made--and we couldn't be happier. We explored other schools such as Interlochen and Walnut Hill, but Idyllwild was the perfect choice. The school has exceeded our expectations in every way. The arts training is remarkable, and the academic experience is also excellent. We'll be make next year!

I am currently a theatre major and attending my first year at Idyllwild Arts. I also considered attending both Walnut Hill and Interlochen Arts Academy, and while both schools are exemplary, Idyllwild just seemed right. One of my biggest worries about attending an arts school was lack of focus on academics. However, I could not be happier with the education I am attaining from Idyllwild Arts. The difference in learning from the past schools I have attended is the focus on concepts. Instead of memorizing dates or formulas, the curriculum concentrates on understanding and comparison. Another surprising quality of Idyllwild is the supportive community. I was concerned on the level of competition present among the students of the same art form. When I arrived at Idyllwild Arts, none of my colleagues were interested in my vocal range or the monologue I was planning to use for my first audition. Members of the Idyllwild Arts were genuinely friendly, helpful, and very welcoming to all the new additions to the community. As for my art form, I have never been more challenged. Not only am I learning information about myself as an actress, but also I have learned so much about my self as a person. Idyllwild is sincerely an environment for positive self-growth. With the great diversity of students and countless opportunities, Idyllwild has given me more than I could ever ask for. I am incredibly grateful to attend this amazing school.

I currently attend Idyllwild Arts and it is everything and more than I hoped it would be. The academics are excellent, a much higher level than I expected at an arts school. I am in the theatre program and it is hard work, but very worth it. The days are busy and filled up with classes and rehearsals, but I have learned so much in the small amount of time I have been here. The teachers in both academics and your arts program are incredible in sharing everything they know. I have improved leaps and bounds in acting, singing and dancing since I came here in September. If you are considering an arts boarding school, Idyllwild is definitely the best. The town is adorable, and the people are unbelievable. I have made many lifelong friends in a short time, and we are truly a family. The dorm system is great and your dorm parents will always be there to help you with anything. We have great activities and off the mountain trips. I feel so lucky to be able to have this opportunity and I highly recommend Idyllwild to anyone willing to work hard for what they want.

As parents we made a difficult decision to send our son to a performing arts high school in a distant part of the country quite a distance from our hometown. We were in search of a school that could provide a program that could highly benefit a child who had a strong interest in the arts while providing solid academics.

After two years I can honestly say this was the right decision for him and has provided an outstanding opportunity that has been transformational on many levels. The student can explore boundless opportunities in their respective art discipline as well as academics and really take it to any level they wish to take it. Our experience has been with the Jazz Dept., which offers wonderful teachers and a tremendous program.

For students fortunate enough to attend such a special school it allows an opportunity to focus on a passion and provide a very unique high school experience in an extraordinary beautiful and inspiring environment in the mountains.

Finding the balance between academics and the art curriculum can be a challenge and if a student wishes to excel in both areas it requires a real commitment and strong dedication. However, we feel the school can provide a solid foundation for top colleges (or conservatories or art schools etc.) and hopefully professional opportunities.

No situation is a perfect fit for every student and there are many things to consider in such a decision. However, this can be a magical school for fortunate students who wish to take full advantage of what it has to offer.

For years I have wanted to express my opinions about Idyllwild Arts Academy, but have found no online venue in which to do so. Not to sound vitriolic, but I am glad there are some places online now where parents and students can read reviews about this boarding school that paint a more full-bodied picture of what it??s like to attend Idyllwild Arts. I hope these reviews will encourage parents and students to make a more educated decision in whether or not Idyllwild Arts is a worth while venture for them.

I started to write a review about my experience as a student at Idyllwild Arts, but by the time I was finished, it turned into a four-page expos that the Idyllwild Arts organization would probably try to sue me for. These don??t make my claims untrue mind you, I would just rather they not try to come after me or my family.

Here??s my review in a nutshell: (this is coming from a graduate of Idyllwild Arts, Theatre Program) DON??T GO HERE. This place an absolute joke. Heed the previous reviews it IS NOT worth your money and the faculty is highly under-qualified.

They feed you a great sales pitch about how selective they are, all the astute artists that convene there, and all scholarly work that goes on at the school, but in the end, that??s really all it is, a great sales pitch. The truth is they??ll take any kid just to make a quick buck, and most of the untalented ??cash cows?? they accept are nothing but burn-out delinquents that have been kicked out of every other boarding school.

I also completely agree with the previous review that most of theatre faculty is made up of a bunch of washed-up bullies. The academic faculty is a joke as well; some of them don??t even have college degrees.

If you are a teenaged student looking for intense training in the performing arts, I??d look at the Walnut Hill School or Interlochen School for the Arts. Idyllwild Arts just isn??t worth your time or money.

Also, if you would like a more in-depth, detailed review of my experience as a student at Idyllwild Arts please read it here: http://dontgotoidyllwild.wordpress.com/

Idyllwild Arts is an awful place. The academic and arts education is subpar for the amount the school charges. The administration is hypocritical and have a hierarchy among students. Full pay students come first, and everyone else can solve their own problems. Additionally, the theatre teachers are disrespectful and also just plain mean to students. The creative writing department is dry and most of the works are whiny and not well written. The library is understocked and disappointing. Further, there is a high use of drugs among the IAA community. Many of the students even smoke on campus or in dorms. The academic teachers have no respect for students' art or the fact that theatre productions, dance shows, etc. take time from the evenings and do not grant extensions. The financial aid department is irregular and unprofessional. It is great that Bill Lowman is retiring because he does not respect parents or students. He is impatient and mean. Many school policies are contradictory and unfair. The students have no rights. Do not come here. It is not worth 50 grand. Most people do not return due to extreme unhappiness with the school. It is NOT all its cracked up to be.

I can't agree more with the review on the bottom.I left the school right after my junior year.It was my first and last year. There is a terrible English teacher,George Pratt. First, he can not teach. Actually, he does not teach. He states his own opinion and you can never, ever, ever challenge him. The school really does not have rules. However the art program is great

Wonderful art program but a terrible ACADEMIC system.
Since it's such a tight knit environment one administrator cannot go against another administrator. If the teacher hates you, you will have a terrible grade. Horrible academic system.

All I can say is leaving Idyllwild Arts Academy was perhaps the largest mistake of my life. I am doing everything in my power to return to this wonderful place. From the students to the campus itself, Idyllwild Arts Academy can only be truly perceived in the context of ART. This is not only a paradise to anyone who visits but a true savior to aspiring artists.

Dont even listen to those other reviews, Idyllwild is a truly amazing place. I am currently attending entering in as a third year Junior and this school has truly changed me. Amazing teachers and amazing people really make this place a learning environment. Yes this school does cost a lot of money, but there are so many kids here on scholarship. This school gives you what you put in. You want to be a professional here is where you start.

Unlike what some of you have said, this school is beyond most collages. The arts program and academic stimulus is unbelievable. The staff and teachers are amazing and everyone must [and DOES] work together to make this school what it is.

For parents thinking of sending your kids to this school: I recommend it. I used to get in trouble a lot and didn't get good grades but when I decided that I wanted to attend Idyllwild Arts Academy, I turned all that around. I now keep a GPA of 3.5-4.0. I am a theatre student who didn't even have much experience but this school has shaped me into everything I have ever hoped to be.

For kids looking at this school: Don't let those other reviews fool you. Look at the website and other honest reviews of the school. Visit the amazing campus, look in the dorms, visit the [not even right to call it a] cafeteria that looks more like a beautiful restaurant. Look into everything and you will see [just as I did] that those other comments are unjustified. The dorms are really beautiful. Everything is. And you will see for yourself if you take the time.

IAA is not focused on money. A large percentage of the student body is on financial aid. What is paid is needed for such a top class education and arts training.

The teachers love it there just as much as the students. There is a lot of responsibility involved, this is not a school for troubled teens. This is a school for dreamers, but serious ones. This is a school for anyone who is willing to work hard toward their future. This is a school devoted to their student, their teachers, to everyone involved. This is a school for students like me.

This is a world-class preparatory arts school located in beautiful mile-high Idyllwild. Training includes dance, music, visual arts, moving pictures and theatre. Students attend academic classes in the morning, arts classes in the afternoon. Attendance is kept to a limited number so that student to teacher ratio is excellent. Students graduating form IAA attend the most prestigious colleges, universities and conservatories in the world.
