It's a bit on the cold side. However, it's a naturally fed pool with crystal clear ground water so it has no chlorine! It's very large so it never feels crowded.

PROS: clean, big

One of the most beautiful places in Austin. The water is a constant temperature year round. And the length of the pool is tremendous. Once you go there, you'll be going again and again.

I hate to swim in clorinated small pools. Barton Springs is the best place to go swim in Austin. It is a natural sping feed swimming pool and it is huge. Temperature of the water stays about 68 degrees year round. When temperatures get to the upper 90's or above this is the place to go.

Barton Springs Pool is a spring-fed body of water situated in Zilker Park, a hotbed for local Austin events.

The pool is surrounded by lush greenery and graceful hills, and is a perfect place to bring a book and some food for a picnic.

Admission ranges from $1-3. Come early on hot weekends to reserve a nice spot around the pool. Food and drinks are allowed (no alcohol, I don't think), and pets are off limits in the pool, but are allowed in the overflow area just downstream from the pool.

One excellent perk about Barton Springs Pool is the proximity to Zilker Park events. Spending all day at a music festival can be tiring, and it's often nice to know that a refreshingly cool dip is just a few minutes walk away.

The Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park is a great location to enjoy the Austin day. It is a blessing in the summer heat, but believe it or not, is the same temp in the dead of winter. The 68 degree water is quite cold, but you need to experience it atleast once. The fees on the weekend for parking are ridiculous, but that's Austin for you. The fee for the pool is $3 per adult, but get there early or you will be hiking to the pool-parking fills up quick.

I have always enjoyed Barton Springs Pool because it's more like a 3 mile or so swimming hole (really nice one) than a pool. It's always cool even the heat and it's open year round. Lately, they've had to close it for lengths at a time for one reason or another (was it the salamanders?) but it's always great when it reopens. The area around the pool is great for playing frisbee or running & playing with the kids. It's a great spot for picnics or just hanging out! They also have a train ride for a small charge for the kids.

Cold, cold, cold! Must be expected when the water comes from natural springs. We took my 1 1/2 year old niece, and she was uncomfortable with the water at first, but she loved it once she got used to it. The shallow part of the pool is VERY slippery due to the moss on the bottom. I would recommend the pool for the kids (and adults) who are able to swim in deeper parts of the pool.

There is also an awesome place to wade in the water right outside the pool area where the water flows out. A lot of people bring their dogs to that area, but if you go further down the river you can find a pet free place.

Another attraction is the train that goes around the park. It is a 25 minute ride for a very cheap price. If you get hungry or thirsty, there is a place right outside the pool area that sells snow cones, hamburgers, etc.

Awesome, cheap, family fun! Check it out!

PROS: Fun for the whole family
CONS: None

This is the place to go to beat the Texas heat. It is a natural spring fed pool and the temperature is about 68 degrees year round. They have lovely large trees to sit under when you are done swimming.

Barton SPrings Pool is a hidden treasure in downtown Austin. With Zilker Park only steps away, it makes the perfect family outing. The water is cold, but the naturally spring fed pool offers some amzing sights below. Just be sure to bring a snorkel to look out for the endangered salamander!

Barton Springs Pool is one of Austin's best treasures. The natural spring pool is one of the best places to go on a hot day in Austin. When you first jump in the water is extremely cold, but once you swim around it become extemely invigorating. The place is always lively with people coming in or out, but the environment is always friendly and fun. But, if your are bringing kids, it is legal in Austin, for woman to go topless, so sometimes there are a few less items of clothing on the Austin natives.

PROS: Beautiful environment, kid friendly, Austin original
CONS:

If you are ever in Austin, it would be a crime not to check this place out. As a child, we would go almost religously after my parents got off work.

Three acres in size, the pool is fed from under ground springs and is on average 68 degrees year round. If you're too afraid to take a dip in the frigid waters on a hot Texas day, the sprawling grass areas and shady Pecan trees will provide a nice back drop for a nap or at the very least some incredible people watching.

Keep an eye out for the endangered Barton Springs salamander!
