.

I needed a fan blower replaced on a central heating AC unit in Manhattan. I looked for recommendations, but none of the listed businesses did this kind of work. So I asked if they could refer someone. This place came recommended!!! I made an appointment and the tech and trainee showed up on time. That was the last good thing! Tech looked at the unit for about 5 minutes and confirmed I needed new motor and cleaning. Then he told me it will be $2,500!!! There was no way I was going to come up with that kind of money. I paid the guy $150.00 for "service call" - they insisted they get paid for the visit. Looking back, this may be some scam - get paid for no work - almost legitimate and definitely legal. Decided to try it myself. A friend and I took the motor out, cleaned the area and took the motor to an electric motor supplier. We got a brand new replacement motor and a capacitor (just in case). Got two filters from Home Depot. Total cost: $115.00. Took us about 3 hours of actual work, all told. When I called Amtech, the owner/manager told me $2,500.00 was the "going rate" and that I should come and look at his expenses. I have trouble understanding how an AC tech gets higher rate then a surgeon. Unless you have money to burn, try someone else.
