We purchased a Borsalino hat for my husband a few years ago that we were happy with. We live far from NY, so we purchased by mail. We called Bencraft and asked if we purchased a hat of the same brand but a different style, would it fit. We were told, quite emphatically, that the sizes are the same regardless of style and haven't changed.

We ordered the hat in the exact size we have, it arrived and it wasn't just a little too big, it was HUGE!

Bencraft had no explanation for why this happened. They asked us to measure my husband's head two inches above his ears. I did, and was told he is a different size than the hat we have (which fits).

They sent another hat out as an exchange (without us authorizing them to make ANOTHER CHARGE FOR THE $200 HAT THAT WE WERE EXCHANGING PLUS MORE SHIPPING CHARGES! - and we had returned the first hat and found out we WERE NOT CREDITED FOR IT).

This hat was WAY TOO SMALL! Not just a little too small but ridiculous.

These mistakes were clearly Bencraft's fault, however, they felt justified in charging us for TWO hats (the charges are now in dispute with my credit card company) and a total of $60 in shipping fees to carelessly send me the wrong hat sizes and have me pay to ship the wrong sizes back!

When I told them they should pay the shipping fees because of their errors, I was told "We don't pay shipping fees."

Well, that is why I wrote this review - I think it's important to let others know when a business gives bad customer service, makes unauthorized charges on a customer's credit card, does not credit returns and charges for shipping when they sent the wrong size out twice.

Had they paid for the shipping and made sure that we got the right size hat, I could forgive the trouble and the time it takes to wrap and ship packages back to them. But their attitude is one of entitlement: They are entitled to misadvise a customer and the customer must pay for their errors! The credit card company will get our money back for the hats but they can't get the money back for the shipping - so we spent $60 (and we never agreed to pay to ship the second hat out) and NO HAT!

Bencraft sent me the wrong hat. After I returned it, they refused to refund me either the shipping cost or the return shipping cost, which together exceeded $50. So I paid over $50 to receive and return the wrong hat.

I've ordered 3 hats from Bencraft & all arrived in perfect condition. The sales folks are top notch, when they tell you the hat's on it's way, believe it. I even had one shipped overnight, Bencraft did their part right, but the Post Office screwed it up & I didn't get it until the next day. Bencraft didn't charge me for the shipping! I will not hesitate to buy from them again.

I purchased a Borsalino Allessandria size 7 3/8 (59) for $200 from Bencraft last autumn. I couldn't be more pleased with the hat, the price or the service. At first I was dubious about the price because it was at least 50% less than their nearest competitor. But, the hat turned out to be genuine and first quality. Everything about the transaction was perfect. I would buy from them again without hesitation.

They were the only ones in the country, perhaps world, to carry a Chatham with 2 5/8 front brim. Even the factory outlet doesn't have those. I called Bencraft to verify their website was correct. They confirmed it was.

I purchased the hat & it arrived in a timely fashion and as advertised. Later I called back with a few questions on maintaining the hat. They advised if the hat lost shape in the rain, they would reblock it for free. I would just have to pay $10 for shipping.

I highly recommend this store. Many people think all NYC stores have attitudes & bad accents, that is not true here.

Contrary to the two other reviews, my experience with
this store was exceptionally pleasant. I placed my order over the internet. They had a very user-friendly websight. My hat arrived in less than two weeks (standard freight) and was beautifully packaged. The hat fit perfectly. As for price, I looked at a half dozen other websights and found Bencraft to have the best price. Unlike cheap ball caps, high-end felt mens hats sometimes have to be custom made and blocked. If your impatient and your on a budget, then buy a cheap ball cap.

A phony business. We sent them an order for 7 hats plus our own hat to copy from several months ago. They do not acknowledge our calls, and when they do they give us a run-around. A very dishonest company.

Talk about overpriced hats. They have been in business for many years, probably 30 or so. But their prices are outrageously high. They have regular hats that lets say elsewhere costs $100 they will charge $175. Although they do sell quality hats. I still highly recommend you shop elsewhere for your hat needs.
