If you visit New York you can't skip the trip to Ellis Island Museum. The whole place is full of history and we spent about 3 hours walking around learning interesting things about the immigration to America and the start of our country. Since most if not all Americans have ancesters who came through Ellis Island on their way to America, the museum holds special meaning and in the great hall you can feel the energy and hope that drove those millions to come to a new world. Fascinating bit of American history.

This isn't your typical kitschy museum gift shop. The Ellis Island Museum Gift Shop actually has items of quality that directly connect to Ellis Island. You're sure to find some great treasures to bring home to remember your trip (even if you're a die hard New Yorker) and some to share your trip with others. What would a visit to a gift shop be without a purchase of some post cards. They have some truly stunning ones here!

After a tour of Ellis Island I found it impossible not to enter the gift shop to find something of interest to bring home with me..The selection is unique and almost a museum in itself..I particularlly love the pictures and postcards that show what it was like for all those brave immigrants to Americas shore as they looked back then

PROS: Unique selection of memorabilia
CONS: none

Ellis Island in itself is a visit I think every American should make. None of us came here without an ancestor or two coming first, either our own or someone elses. The gift shop here, while small, provides some great souvenirs of the visit. My husbands family actually passed through Ellis Island, and their names are engraved on the wall of names of those who passed through. In the gift shop, they sell a 'kit' that you can do a rubbing of the names on the wall. It's a wonderful souvenir, that we can now pass down to our daughter, along with the story.
