I used to come here last semester for $1 taco nights at La Verdad! I was a bit apprehensive, since I'm not normally a big taco fan, but their soft tacos are some of the best in Boston. I wouldn't want to pay normal price, since the portion of the tacos arent that big, but to get 5 tacos for $5 - yes, please! The bartender there is wicked nice, she's very bubbly and likes making conversation. Haven't been here in the Sox season, but I'm sure it gets way crowded.

Pros: $1 Tacos!!!

Cons: Crowded in Sox season

Start with a margarita. Or sangria. Or a Corona or Dos Equis. What else are you going to do? You're in a Mexican restaurant?

Try some of the tacos.. there are flavors for every palate. There will be leftover nachos. Bring friends :) You can even purchase a Mexican fighting mask and look like Jack Black in that terrible movie...

AND it's across the street from Fenway. Load up here before the game and you won't be kicking yourself later for all the crap you ate at the park :) You'll be in your happy place; promise.

Pros: Duck Confit Tacos, Nachos w/ Fresh Guacamole

Cons: I may have overindulged...

I recently went here with some friends. We were seated somewhat near the door and it was freezing! My friend ordered wine and there was a bug in her glass. When she showed it to the waitress the glass was taken away and quickly replaced. It took a long time for our food to arrive, which was weird because the place was fairly empty. There is no free chips, salsa, or bread. When our food did arrive someones order was completely wrong...I dont think its worth going here. The drinks are okay...nothing uber special and its kind of privy or what you get. I would go here again if a friend wanted a mediocre experience.

Pros: they have tacos!

Cons: cold durring the winter

I went in here for a drink and it was pretty good. I thought the servers were friendly and personable. Drinks were a little expensive but probably no more than typical places in boston

I will never turn down a La Verdad taco.

I am originally from California and good mexican food is severely lacking in Boston. For some reason, corn tortillas are not that popular here. Sadness. Then La Verdad came around and changed everything.

The corn tortillas in all of the tacos here are made fresh and are awesome. I order a side order of them and eat them with the guacamole, which is equally as good. The shrimp tacos are covered in "governor's sauce" which should probably just read "delicious sauce." Beef tacos and carnitas are great. The only issue I have with this place is that the fish tacos are not as good. The fish breaded and deep fried, and I prefer grilled fish in my tacos - I'm not exactly sure what style is "authentic" but i've only ever had grilled fish for fish tacos in san diego and mexico.

Oh yeah, the house margarita (la verdad margarita) is the BEST margarita in Boston. They make their own sour mix, which is key.

FISHTACOFISHTACOFISHTACO. I freaking love fish tacos and I'm proud to say it. I thought I would find no equal to fish tacos I'd had in California, and then I was introduced to La Verdad. Sweet little handmade tortillas, flaky perfectly battered fish, some shredded cabbage and 3 sauces-avocado puree, chipotle mayo and crema which expode in a tangy ooze outa the sides of the taco and down your face. But who cares, you've found nirvana. The corn is perfect, chargrilled with chili powder, cheese mayo and lime. The watermelon agua fresca seemed to have a little added sugar, but was delicious nonetheless. I can't wait to go to the restaurant, which was closed when we were there, as it has the kitschy cavernous look of a Southern California mexican restaurant, with colorful light fixtures and wrestling masks and generally an ambiance as larger than life as the food.

We ate at laverdad on tuesday this week and the food was outstanding. They have a deal on dollar tacos i had three chicken and one of the pork tacos. The chicken was roasted with a spicy BBQ rub and was so juice it also had refried beans and red pickled onions on the top which made the taco. The pork was marrinated in pinapple and orange juice and was topped with this amazing green salsa made from avacados. I came in about half an hour before my wife did and I waited had some chips and guacamole and a margaritta while i waited the server was very intetive to me and when she had time chatted with me as well intil my wife showed up everything was amazing

I had heard a great deal about La Verdad since it opened, but was very disappointed after finally paying a visit. The restaurant was fairly empty when my dinner companion and I arrived, roughly 5:00 on a Saturday. There was no host/hostess, and it took several minutes before somebody finally came to seat us. We were seated at a table near the bar, and a group of 4-5 employees were all socializing, swearing and not working right behind us for the bulk of our meal. This is unacceptable, even though it was not busy. If you are not going to work, do it somewhere where the customers don't have to hear about your weekend plans.

The biggest problem with La Verdad, however, is not the inattentive staff, but the food itself. Our meal started well with a beef quesadilla. The beef was tender, and the mushroom and corn filling was a nice surprise, especially when one considers that quesadillas exist on the menu of every bar/pub/family restaurant in the city. The guacamole that accompanied the dish was bland and too mushy for my taste, however. For entrees, my companion ordered the enchiladas, my favorite Mexican dish, but there was very little to get excited about. They were under sauced, dry and lacked seasoning. Mexican food requires bold, fresh flavors, and this dish did not have any. I ordered the chile verde, which exposed even more problems. Again, the dish was under seasoned, and they only way I knew I was eating a Mexican dish was because of the unmistakable sweetness of tomatillos. There was nothing in the dish to cut this sweetness: no salt, no spice, nothing savory. The menu claimed it came with braised pork, but there were only 3 pieces of pork which were dry and tough for a braised meat. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes, but La Verdad was 0 for 2 on the entrees, and for a menu that offers few dishes to begin with, this is not a good sign.

Overall, it was not worth the trip or the money for bland food and poor service.

Cons: Service, flavor, value

Went over the weekend and ordered a regular FROZEN margarita and the waitress came back with a regular margarita, shaken. When I told her that's not what I ordered she just matter of factly told us they don't serve regular margaritas frozen (you think she would've said that when we ordered it!) We then ordered the mixed grill plate (skirt steak, carnitas, chorizo and habanero sausage) to share which said came with "seasoned mashed plantains" When the dish arrived, the white pile of mush with the meat was actually ICE COLD BOXED MASHED POTATOES!! NO JOKE!! I am Cuban and know a plantain from 100 miles away. When we told the waitress she insisted we were wrong but would bring us a different side dish, we asked for the plantain chips which were ok if those also weren't cold and soggy. The meat , I must say, was very good. The habanero sausage is NOT for the faint of heart, VERY HOT!! We ended the meal with the Dulce de Leche bread pudding and the Churros, both were excellent. The waitress did take the meat platter off the bill to make up for their goofs.

Pros: location if looking for a good meal before/after the game, dessert

Cons: description of menu items are false, unknowledgeable servers

The bar tenders and bouncers are rude, provide poor service and are always on power trips. For such a boring bar and average food they all seem to think they are a big deal. I have been her a couple of times and it always ends in the bar tender saying something rude to a paying customer. DONT GO HERE! there are lots of better options within five feet!!!!

I'll give them a slight break as I was there before a ballgame. So, yes, the service was painfully slow--they desperately needed another bartender--but it was really crowded and would be clearing out soon. No break given for the bland food. This is supposed to be Mexican, after all. The carnitas was tender and tasty but with only the tiniest hint of a Mexican marinade and no hint of seasoning. The carne asada tasted simply like plain beef. Salsa was even more bland-tasted like it was made from watercress. The tiny portion of refried beans was decent enough. Very strong bean flavor but still with the mushy consistency the dish demands. The music was so loud our bartender, when we did get the opportunity to speak to her, couldn't understand our orders. We wound up leaning across the bar shouting into her ea. I've nothing against loud music and enjoy a good Latin beat but the sound system was such that the only thing discernible was an absolutely thundering bass line. But the biggest problem is the food. It is just incredibly bland for Mexican. Maybe they're cutting food costs by not using any spices. I mean, this stuff is more bland than a Mexican restaurant in a mall in Idaho. Boston is a Mexican food wsteland and even by Boston standards it was a waste of calories. On the plus side, the margaritas were pretty tasty. Not too tart or sweet with just an edge of the tequila cutting through. I've had better, but far more often, I've had worse.

When I sat in La Verdad last weekend, I knew I would write a citysearch review. Before I sat down to type mine up, I read the other reviews to see if other people had similar experiences to me. Apparently not. but I feel like mine is worth mentioning anyway.

Friday afternoon, I called La Verdad to make reservations for a party of six that evening. Whoever answered the phone told me, "Baby, we don't take reservations." I was surprised. #1 Because she called me baby. #2 Because their website indicates they do take reservations. Regardless, we headed over to around 7pm. The hostess greets us and inquires if IF WE HAVE RESERVATIONS. I explain that I called earlier and was told they don't accept reservations. The hostess laughed and told me that person ALWAYS SAYS THAT. This did not sit well with me.

To their credit, we did get a table pretty quickly. However, we also got very average food and very below average service. The waitress seemed genuinely annoyed we were there. She would not clear our plates after we finished eating. When we got and paid the bill they were still there.

I'm still a Ken Oringer fan- just won't be going back to la Verdad.

My wife and I love this place, fantastic atmosphere, great authentic food and top notch margaritas. The bartender we had last Saturday (Feb 16th) she was great too, super friendly and very helpful with recommendations and she made a mean margarita. We loved it so much that last night (Sunday, Feb 25, 2008) we went back for more. Actually we brought friends, a group of us drove down to Boston to eat here. They hadn't been but really wanted to go after we raved about it and after they read the great review in Bon Appetite magazine. We were excited to have a nice dinner at La Verdad, but a bit perplexed when we saw the sign outside that says "OPEN LATE" only to find the doors locked at 7:00 PM.

While we were on the corner discussing where to go, over the span of 10 minutes, we counted at least 12 couples that came there to eat. Looks like they turned away a pretty good crowd last night.

Considering how far away we are and the price of gas, we are reluctant to come back now, knowing that we may find the doors locked again. It would be great if they posted business hours on their site.

I went to La Verdad before the playoff game on Friday for a few drinks with three friends. The bar was busy, but we were still able to get drinks, it just took a few minutes. The margaritas were very good, not too sure what was in them, but delicious just the same. There was one seat open so we all congregated around there on the right side of the bar. We ordered chips and guacamole to have something to nibble on while we drank, a very good choice - very fresh and the chips were very thick not the store bought flimsy things and the guacamole was very fresh. I would definitely come back and try some more of the food (the tacos looked really awesome) . Also, I?d like to see what it?s like on non-game night.

Authentic Mexican food was hard to find in Boston ?until La Verdad opened. Not only do they serve you the best tacos in the city, but also they have the ambience that will keep people coming back. As you walk past the take out/open kitchen, you enter a room filled with soft light and Mexican wrestling masks dangle from the ceiling, in other words you are transposed to a different world. My party and I sat at a table and ordered a pitcher of the La Verdad margarita ? best margarita I?ve ever had, just tequila, agave nectar, and freshly squeezed limejuice ? and decided what to order. We decided on the quesadilla, a mixture of grilled corn, mushrooms, cilantro and monetary cheese, and the Toro corn, which is corn rubbed with mayonnaise, cotija cheese, and chili powder. The corn was messy but well worth it, it was fabulous and very distinctive, and the quesadilla was equally as delicious as it a medley of flavors that were surprising. Now the reason we came to this Ken Oringer establishment - the tacos. I ordered 1 pescado, 1 carnitas, and 1 turkey pastor. Each taco tasted better than the next, and the presentation was equally as impressive. The pescado was a lightly friend fish with chipolte mayo, avocado puree, and shredded cabbage. After trying the fish taco I realized I had just found my new favorite food. The carnitas and carne asada were equally as good, but the pescado was my favorite, probably because it was unlike what I was expecting. I have now found the best Mexican food in Boston, and am definitely going to be a regular at this restaurant

I went to La Verdad for the first time last night before the game (left work a bit early?) for some margaritas and pre-game food where I met up with up some friends. We all arrived at different times, so we congregated at the bar. The bartender suggested I try their signature drink - the La Verdad Margarita a blend of tequila, agave nectar and fresh squeezed limejuice (which they do as they make their drinks, a very nice touch!) was amazing. The drink, which can be served in a pitcher, was not your typical sugary, tart margarita, but rather a delicious, refreshing beverage that I loved. My friends followed suit, and we then decided to do a tequila shot. One of my friends asked on a whim if they had any sangrita, which is a tomato juice spiced with chilies and limejuice used to chase tequila (no need for lime or salt), and they did! So far in our eyes this place was awesome. As we continued our experience we ordered some food, an order of the chorizo tacos, a chicken milanesa torta, and chips and guacamole. We shared everything that which was great because everything looked and tasted amazing. The chorizo tacos were mixed with potato, poblano peppers, lime, cilantro, and onion, they had a little kick, but they were so good. The tacos are served in three?s and they are each about 3 bites, a great dish to share. The torta is a sandwich with chicken, Oaxaca cheese, molasses-chipotles, avocado, Mexican herbs, and refried beans, and was exactly the kind of food that balances out all the margaritas, and finally the chips and guacamole was so fresh and was highlighted by the hand made tortillas (you can see the woman making them as you walk in the restaurant) that they make into chips. All in all we left, wishing we could have stayed a bit longer, had some more margaritas and more delicious food, but we had the sox game to go to, and we?ll all be back for a non game day, I think this is a great spot!

Went to La Verdad yesterday before Rufus Wainwright concert on a friend's recommendation. I was aware it would be busy but I was greeted(with a very nice smile) and seated soon after. While waiting my girlfriend and I had margaritas at the bar, I had the house and she had the frozen strawberry - she loved hers(nice and sweet she wants me to write) and mine was fantastic - I really liked the touch the fresh-squeezed lime had instead of Rose's bottled. When we were seated outside after 10 minutes or so our server came over right away and asked if we had been there before, etc. She made some recommendations about her favorites (grilled corn, fish tacos, carne asada tacos, shrimp tacos) and we decided to take her word and stick with the recommendations. The corn was fantastic, and the fish tacos were out of this world good. The other tacos were great too - the taste of the corn tortillas was delicious. The atmosphere was perfect for what we were looking for - light and breezy with upbeat music, and even though the staff was clearly very busy, they ran with smiles on their face. On the way to the concert (which was very cool too, Rufus rocks) my girl remarked that she was surprised at the personal level of service and food quality for a location on Landsdowne, and how nice it was to get the feeling that you were in a restaraunt with a fun, casual atmosphere instead of a loud, crowded (or loud and empty that night) bar. We had a great time, it was the perfect way to start our night, and we will be back.

I went to La Verdad a few days ago with some friends and I have to say that the food was awesome. I haven't had grilled corn like that since I was in Mexico and bought it in the streets there - very authentic. We got a bunch of tacos to share and they were all very tasty and a good size. Not to mention the margaritas were great too. Our service was good - our waiter was very attentive and we received our food promptly. I have read several other reviews trashing the service there and I have to say we had the completely opposite experience. I can't wait to go back and try more on the menu and I will definitely be getting more tacos and grilled corn!!

Great atmosphere, awesome music. The tacos are unbelievable, and you can't go there and not have the chips and guacamole....everything is so fresh. Oh, how could I forget?....they honestly make the best margaritas I've ever had (and that's a lot)

This place is great. Now I'm no expert on food but everything I've had here, which is pretty much everything on the menu, has been delicious. Not only was the margarita that I had beautiful but also the bartender who was serving me. The service, in my experience, has always been very attentive and quick. I think that Ken should be very proud of his kitchen crew because they really get the job done. Thats what keeps me coming back at least once a week. And I also must mention the decour of the dining room is very comfotable, I especially like the dim lighting. Keep up the good work guys.

I feel upon this restaurant after leaving Cask n Flagoon which wasn't the best experience and I got a half way down Landsdowne st and heard music coming from a patio. I walked into the restaurant and sat at the bar and tried a Margarita which I normally don't like it was amazing. I don't really consider my self a foody but I do like to try food I had a mixed taco plate with a pork taco, steak taco, and a tongue taco (tasted like kiboasa the bar tender recommended it which was a big step for me to try). The fillings for the taco were fresh and the taco shells were the best I ever had I asked the bar tender and he said, ?look through that window, the woman makes the shells fresh all day. I have never seen that any where in Boston only in L.A. were I am from. From the service to the food as well as the music I give La Verdad 5 stars and is a must go.

Someone recently mentioned to my roomate and I to try out La Verdad on Lansdowne Street for some cheap tacos and margaritas. We encountered a fantastic taqueria and restaurant all in one. We were psyched to get patio seating and when we realized we could get a pitcher of Margaritas for $30.00 we were in heaven. These were by far the best margaritas I have had a in a while. We also tried the grilled corn on the cob and some tacos. The tacos are tiny but absolutely delicious!! Service was great and our waitress was very knowledgable about the menu, which was good because it is definitely a Mexican restaurant!! I will definitely go back, perhaps to sit outside with a pitcher of margaritas for a red sox game.

I went to La Verdad with a group of my friends one night after a Sox game. We had a great time! We snacked on Chips and Guac (some of the best guac I have had) and girl talked over amazing margaritas! The atmosphere was great and the authentic feeling was perfect. We are definately going back for another girls night out!

OK, so our first visit to La Verdad was maybe a little too early to check out a new restaurant, the food & drinks were good but the service was another story. Being regular "foodies", my wife and I went back yesterday (sox were not playing) to give them a 2nd chance and what a different 1 month can make!!!

The food was amazing, the fish taco and the guac & chips could not be fresher, the margaritas were MUCH better this time like they have mastered their recipe. And the service improved 100%! Our waitress was attentive, could answer questions regarding the menu, and it?s like a whole new place. Both the food and drinks came out much faster than the last visit too.

This is certainly the best real mexican food in town and we will be back again soon!

My boyfriend and I caught a meal at La Verdad before a show at the Avalon. Based on the past reviews of very poor service we were a bit worried about the timing and decided to forgo the server and sit at the bar. I think they got the message from the past reviews because we had an exceptional meal with fantastic service. Our food came out very quickly and it was delicious. We tried 4 different tacos and the guacamole. The tacos were served on super fresh soft taco shells and the meat was perfectly cooked and flavored. You could smell and taste the corn that the shells were made with. They were a treat! While the guacamole was absolutely fresh we found that it lacked a bit in taste... it did not have any onion, tomato, etc. The accompanying chips were thick and delicious. We were visited by the manager who gave us a quick lesson in tequilas, of which they have a large assortment. Overall, the meal was great. We were in and out within an hour and had a full meal and drinks. The prices were very reasonable. We very much look forward to going back.

We live in Trilogy, the new apartment building by Fenway, and were excited to try a new restaurant in our neighborhood. We were very disappointed. We went on a Friday night when the Red Sox were out of town. The place was empty but the service was terrible and the music was extremely loud. I ordered a Sangria that was basically just a glass of red wine (no fruit included). I will say that the food was good...we got the chips and guc and 5 tacos for the 2 of us. Hopefully, they improve the atmosphere and service because it could be a fun place to hang out!!

Hate to have my first review ever be a negative one, but I feel compelled to warn others--and hopefully the restaurant will get a clue. Went there last night to check out this new spot before a show at Avalon. Unfortunately our expectation for a nice dining experience on Lansdowne was misguided by the thought that Ken Oringer was associated with this place (Clio and Toro fans).
When we sat down, we ordered two margaritas and chips with guac. After a half hour of waiting, we started looking around to find a waiter/waitress. Another 15 minutes went by, and still no sign of our drinks, chips, or a waiter. Why we didn't leave I don't know.
The guac came out about 10 minutes later, and was pretty good as far as guac goes. Another 5 minutes before our ice filled margaritas arrived (at $10 a pop) in what I would classify a juice glass (i.e. small and pricey/gone in four sips). We managed to place our food order, which took another 15 minutes to arrive.
We knew the tacos were going to be small, so ordered a couple. These were quite tasty and at 2.50 a pop not busting the bank. Also ordered the grilled corn (which was delicious) and the caesar salad (which was NOT delicious--doused in dressing--didn't last two bites).
We never had an opportunity to order refills on the drinks.
We felt that La Verdad has great potential--conceptually the food should be great with Ken Oringer seal. Price points are a bit high for the tiny cocktails--this is Boston, not the meatpacking district in NYC. Unfortunately the "truth" is La Verdad has some serious kinks to work out. I know they opened only a month ago, and many restaurants experience growing pains. They are extremely understaffed and must hire more wait staff and bartenders if they don't want to alienate customers.
I won't be going back any time soon--here's hoping that by October there may be two reasons to go over by Fenway.

We are big fans of Ken Oringer and were excited to try La Verdad.
Unfortunately, we will not be going back.
We sat at our table for 1 hr and 1/2 and only received one round of drinks and the waitress forgot about our appetizer order. We were so fed up - didn't even bother ordering dinner.
La Verdad = F-

My husband young child and I went and tryly enjoyed the selection of tacos - especially the shrimp. We each had two margaritas (not too potent), several small tacos, chips and salsa and gilled corn. The grilled corn appetizer was delicious. There is a nice selection of fresh juices. The seats were not very comfortable and the service was lacking. Our total bill with tip was $88. Not an inexpensive Mexican meal. My husband prefers the portion size of the tacos at El Pelon.

Went with a friend last night as it seemed like a great choice for Cinco de Mayo. Expected it to be crowded. Did not expect the host to try to discourage us from staying or the bartending staff to first set us up with drinks but then ignore our order of chips and guac while waiting for our table. Service remained bad after getting the table with one of our orders going to a nearby table instead of ours. Frankly expected much more. Will not be going back despite the truly good, authentic Mexican food which is so hard to find elsewhere.

WOW!!!! It is next to impossible to find good Mexican food in Boston, and it is completely out of the question to find a decent taqueria. When the best you can do is Anna's, you know you have a sad Mexican food scene.

That being said, La Verdad is PHENOMENAL. I would rate it as comparable, and even better than many Mexican places in the Southwest I've visited. The price is right, too, with everything under $10. Try the Fish Tacos, they are delicious. Actually, everything I've had here is great, the tortillas are hand-made on site, the bread for the tortas are baked fresh at the restaurant.

Also, there are many, MANY tequila/mezcals. I can't remember the actual number, but I think it's over 50. So you can get your cheap, delicious eat on, then get your drink on, and you won't be out too much money.

Basically, this place is exactly what we needed in Boston. Good job to the management, and everyone who is responsible for making it work there. I'm going back there at every opportunity.
