    .

Panera Bread serves up tasty sandwiches, savory soups, salads, and, of course, its signature breads. It's a budget-pleasing place for small groups to meet and eat, as no one hurries you out when you're done.

My personal favorites are the Tuscan Chicken sandwich (which I usually ask for on cheese foccacia bread) accompanied by Broccoli-Cheese soup, as part of Panera's "You Pick Two" for $6.95, if memory serves me. Husband and daughter prefer the French onion soup, which really is yummy. Depending on which salad you choose, you can actually get dark green lettuce in it (a rarity in low-priced restaurants). The salads are usually accompanied with dressings loaded with sugar, so you might want to ask for the dressing on the side, so you can sample the dressing before drenching your salad in something that sets your teeth on edge.

Soups and salads come with a hunk of French baguette, which, as often as not, is hot, fragrant and delicious. And the final crowning touch, IMO, is that Panera provides actual butter at its condiments bar instead of assuming its patrons are just as happy with synthetic spread.

The only jarring note was watching my sandwich being made. The sandwich chef, wearing a rather dirty-looking green apron, had to reach forward to an upper shelf to retrieve the various sandwich ingredients. However, each time he leaned forward his dirty apron came into contact with my sandwich. (I tried not to remember this as I ate my sandwich.) If Panera would rethink the sandwich-making process to engineer this problem out of the procedure, that would be helpful.

In sum, Panera Bread provides tasty food at very reasonable prices, served quickly, and a pleasant atmosphere in which to enjoy it.

PROS: Good food at budget-pleasing prices
    CONS: See review.
