You may be thinking about attending this school because you feel like you have nowhere else to send your child. Please be warned that we found the administration and staff of Clonlara to be totally unequipped to deliver on their mission and philosophy. The student population of this school is made up of young people, who may have emotional, academic, and behavioral disabilities. Clonlara does not have the appropriate professional staff to help the environment be one that nurtures the growth of the students; for example there is no child psychologist on staff and the turnover in teachers has resulted in a very inexperienced staff.

The discipline employed is odd and strife with unbelievable inconsistencies. Our experience was one where extreme amounts of time were spent on discipline issues of the students with ineffective and inconsistent approaches leaving near zero time spent on academics. If you speak out about any school related situation expect to be scorned and punished by an administration that does not like to be questioned.

You may feel you have no other options but you do. The damage done by attending the wrong school can take years to work through, often leaving your child in a worse position than where they started from.

Used Clonlara for my 2 sons from first grade in 1999 through one graduation in 2011. I chose it solely because of its founder Pat Montgomery, a dynamic woman who was utterly committed to home education, was a friend of John Holt's, came highly recommended, and allowed each student to be themselves. When she retired, she turned the running of Clonlara over to her daughter whose priorities, rumor has it, efficiency and a business-like order, although some say it's money. It was no longer possible to call and reach a person, just recordings. Getting assistance with anything was an uphill battle because everyone was being fired. Staff turnover was high and no one really knew what they were doing anymore. I could never recommend this place for any distance learners. Our family is very sad that Clonlara fell apart as it did. It was one of a kind and now it's no place I would even want to visit. I pulled my younger son out so he would have a better experience than my elder son without the inconsistency and disorder that Clonlara now offers. Very sad for our family and I know we are not alone in our disappointment.

My experience with Clonlara was a nightmare! Their response time to anything is months; their idea of unschooling is you should buy expensive books and follow someone else's plan; we turned in our graduation requirements 3 months early and then they sent them back to us for revision 3 days before graduation! It was 6 years of hell and I wouldn't suggest using them to anyone! And the family advisor Olivia needs to get into another profession.

My daughter graduated in 2009. She was well-prepared for college and has successfully finished her first year with an excellent GPA. Most importantly, her educational program was tailored to her learning style and interests, and thus helped make learning enjoyable while helping her prepare for her goals after graduation.

Clonlara is a high rated school! But lots of people don't find this school because of it's location. I still recommend bringing your child here. Or let you child try it out for free, for three days!

Clonlara has long been know for its alternative schooling concepts. They have a Homeschooling umbrella school that allows parents to school their children with their guidance. Though the contact teachers for this program are not always on top of things, the prgram itself is like few others in the nation and allows freedom in educational style for a number of families.

I homeschooled two of my children with the help of and through the Clonlara school system. They helped us with course work ideas and suggested classes my kids should take individualized to their seperate goals. We could reach the contact teacher quickly through e-mail. They were understanding that one of my children had to go at her own pace due to illness. They were very helpful in the end result of getting my homeschooled children a reputable diploma.
