I was debating on wether or not to put two stars or three. The reason I picked three was because, in the end, we ended up with a wonderful dog!

I found two Golden Retrievers that grew up together and were an owner surrender, and I wanted to adopt both of them, however, I had to work and I was unable to go and see the dogs during the times they were open, so I asked the woman in charge if I could come a half-hour before they open and she rudely told me no. Also, when we went for our "meet and greet" with ort three-year-old Shih Tzu, one of the Godlens was too rough with her, so I was going to adopt just one. The lady who was in charge, at first, told me that the Golden I decided to adopt would do fine without his brother, but when I told her that I wanted to just adopt one, she was rude and acted like that was ridiculous, and told me she had many others that would adopt both, so I said okay. However, it has been over a week and the two Goldens are still there...So I wonder what happened to the "many" others who wanted to adopt both.

So, I asked to see a couple of other dogs I saw and was interested in. I wanted a big dog because we had just moved to a new home and had a huge fenced in backyard, and she kept trying to get me to get a small dog. Anyway, needless to say, I didn't listen, and I ended up going with a 10 month old black lab and I told the lady I would be there on Saturday at 11 to pick him up (I wanted to get my house ready), and my husband and I eagerly and very excitedly went to pick up him up and we were FOUR minutes early and the lady in charge acted SO rude. She huffed and looked at the clock before even acknowledging us and continued to say nothing to us and told her kennel worker to "get the dog ready" all while acting very irritated. As you can imagine, I was very mad and dissatisfied with how she was acting. I mean we are adopting a dog there--paying money! And she has the nerve to act so rude! Anyway we took our dog home and they didn't even give us the right paper work for our dog. Then the poor baby ended up bring really sick. He kept throwing up and had diarrhea really bad! I called the lady and she acted once again really rude, and said she would take him to their vet on Monday and it was Friday evening! He couldn't even keep anything down! I was also worried he might have parvo and I was worried for my other animals. So my husband and I decided to be safe rather than wait two days we took him to an after hours emergency clinic. The poor baby was so dehydrated and he had a virus, but no parvo-thank goodness! So, 300 dollars later we were good to go! The part that I wonder about was if he was vomiting and having diarrhea before we got him and they never told us...

Anyway, this is not my first experience with the Kankakee County Humane Society. I was there around Christmas to donate a bunch of supplies and a different lady was there and she was so sweet and nice! However, I don't know what happened to her, but her costumer service/people skills were immensely better than what I experienced with the new lady in charge.

Now, the reason I gave them three stars was, one, we LOVE our new lab! He is such a good boy! Also, he is totally potty trained and he knows so many tricks( I don't know what they were thinking at the shelter when they said he needed work with potty-training and obedience). He is a wonderful addition to our family and we are so happy we got him! Also, the kennel staff was very nice and helpful. Also, it is not the animal's fault that the lady in charge is rude, and they should not have to suffer for her lack of people skills.

Maybe this is just how this woman is, and she doesn't mean anything by it, but I felt very uncomfortable with the way she acted towards me, and I'm sure others have as well.

I got my last dog at the Humane Society. The staff was so helpful. They asked me about my lifestyle, and what I was looking for, and found my perfect pet. I am very grateful for the work they do and the wonderful dog I got there. I would recommend that everyone get their pets from an animal sanctuary or humane society. We have too many breeders out there that are not looking out for animals, just the almighty dollar.
