We were in Boston over Fourth Of July weekend and we had to try this place out. First of all, I must say, we beat the CROWND!!!! yeayyy. We went at the perfect time, I think around 1:00 PM and waited less than 5 minutes. They were so quick! Anyway, The cannoli-plain was huge, delicious crust and delicious filling!! Loved it. The Jim Roll (i think it's called), was good. The cupcakes, not so much. I make better cupcakes at home. The chocolate cupcake almost tasted boxed. Maybe it was because it was hot and it was in the nbox for an hour, I don't know!, but took one bite and threw it out. The vanilla cupcake with white frosting was ok. I can't wait to go back and try the BIG yellow sponge rum cake with filling. It looked so good!!

Pros: Cannolis

Cons: Nothing really

The new canolli's are not as good. After frequenting Mike's for years, its sad they have changed their method of filling canolli's to include less filling. Never should have messed with a good thing. Bring back the old.

It is never a good idea to walk into a pastry shop when you are hungry. You know you will order and eat the worst possible things that would ruin your diet. However, on Feb. 13th I did just that out of despair that every single restaurant in Boston North End required an hour plus wait.

My boyfriend and I were both hungry and grumpy and we couldn't bear the thought of waiting for another hr or two for dinner. Then, we saw Mike's Pastry, selling allegedly the best Canoli in Boston. There was a long line out the door while it was 25 degrees out. We knew it must be true or these people must be crazy! We went in line and thought having some pastry would hold off our hunger until our table is ready.

So we were in line for about 10 minutes and finally got to order our share of pastry. They have a great selection of Canoli, ricotta pies, Italian cookies, pastries, and cakes. It was very hard to even decide what to get. Out of hunger, we decided to get 3 canolis, Zeppole Cream Pie, and Chocolate Dipped Florentine.

We tried the pistacchio canoli first and it was amazing. It is one of the biggest canoli I have had. The shell is crispy and the ricotta cream is fresh. At the same time, we swallowed down the chocholate dipped florentine cookie, which is crispy and tasty too. Before we realized we ate too much, I had half of chocolate covered canoli in my stomach already.

All I can say is this is truly one of the best canoli I have had in the United States, outshining Veniero's or Ferrara in New York. If you are in Boston, definitely visit this Canoli Mecca!

I never understood the appeal of Mike's. Much like Little Italy in other Northeast cities, notably NYC, North end is feeling more and more like Vegas. Good for tourists and not much else. Who wants to elbow to the counter with a whole bunch of tourists for overpriced american italian desserts? Packed, small, crowded and not much else.

Fast service, yummy Boston Cream pie, and very fun store. Well worth the drive, and trouble to find a parking space. A definite place to visit in the North End.

Growing up in Boston, my friends and family mostly took me to Mike's Pastry on Hanover. I've been going for a while. I got many cakes there, even the one for my high school graduation!

Then one day I was walking down the street and some chubby actor or comedian was recording a video with a crew, and though he had a New York accent, he was familiar with Boston.

And he says into the camera, loudly: "In Boston people say 'it's Mike's, it's Mike's, it's Mikes' and it is... for tourists... but locals know it's all about Modern."

My interest was peaked.

Then my Italian uncle (who is an exceptional cook) had us over for dinner and served dessert... fresh cannolis that he was hand-filling. Where were the amazing shells from? Modern.

When I started working down on the waterfront, I started going... and though Mike's has a broader assortment... the items that Modern also offer are generally better (in my opinion).

As for Mike's, I recommend the lobstertail, or the mocha rounds (raspberry jelly or lemon, either way).

There's room for two, though. I recommend you try both places. I bring a lot of visitors to Hanover Street and have them get cannolis from both, along with other sweets, and then have a tasting party back at the house. It's a lot of fun!

I think this shop is overrated. I grew up in a very italian town and feel the cannolis don't compare.

Once you finish waiting in line, you cannot view the food you want because everyone is blocking...and you are rushed to make up your mind. No prices are shown, so you are left to worry if you've spent too much.

I'd recommend going 2 blocks down to another shop and avoid the crowds!

The fashion show of hat by Bruna costumes paraded in front of the bakery. The hat that were really made of cloth were made to resemble the petite fours from the court of Marie Antonette. They were delecately detailed with fring and pearls and beads that resemble the real thing
It was hard to image that woman really wore these beautiful hats and gowns good enough to eat.
Great Display for the pastry shop and Bruna Costumes of Prov R.I. for the demonstration.

This is a must if not just for the experience. It is a milestone in the North End. The line can be tough but its worth the wait. Once you breach the doorway you will find three lines: two on either side of the room and one in the middle. TAKE THE MIDDLE LINE, otherwise you won't get a full purview of the entire dessert case. So good we went twice in one day. Do not get the strawberry shortcake (it was nasty). ENJOY!

Once or twice a month, after I get out of work, I run to Mike's pastry to buy bunch of pasty for my family - mainly lobster tail, whipped cream puff, cannoli, ricotta cheese pie and some other ones that catch my eyes. I end up buying so much, worrying about the price, but the price is always much cheaper than I expect! You can buy loads loads of pastry that can feed 5 people or more with under $20. (Actually it depends on what kind you buy, some kinds are more expensive that others) The food is always fresh, especially when it is crowded because they bring new ones quickly.

My recommendation:
LOBSTER TAIL!! It's crunch outside, sweet & creamy inside. Everyone who tries it falls in love with it. It's kind of big for one person. if you buy just one, you can share with others and save $$.
I also love their cannolis - try all kinds they are all great.
And the giant Wipped cream puff!!

Several cons to note:
(1) very tiny space, not a good place to eat in because there are only few small tables and you have to be squeezed in the crowd while you are eating. It is better to take-out.
(2) the place is often very crowded, especially in the evening. Sometimes you cannot even see what's on the display because so many people are blocking your sight.
(3) you cannot see the price of each item because they do not have price tag on the display. They do not give you receipt either - the clerks just calculate price themselves out of nowhere. But still I perceive that they have reasonable price for their items since it's never been too expensive.

Overall, I really love this place (not much of the 'place' itself but their TREATS) and it's worth to take a trip there. Those heavenly treats make me keep going back to Mike's. And my family is always waiting for me to bring Mike's pastry box.

My first cannoli was at Mike's. They are amazing. I travel all over the country and have tried to find another cannoli that rivals Mike's and none have come close. I get the one with chocolate chips and add powdered sugar. There are always long lines in this place, but it is worth the wait. The cannoli's are good sized and are $2.50 each.

yes, they probably have the Best dessert in town/ Boston, but if you want to sacrifice service in exchange for staff rudeness- i suggest you visit this place last because it might ruin your vacation or trip to Boston. I prefer to have good food and friendly service when I am traveling. ( service doesn't have to be great just friendly )

When going to Mike's, you will notice that there is an abundant lack of seating and the lines are long, but the variety and quality of the baked goods here is most definitely worth the wait! One night, after a horrible dinner, I went down the street to get a nice dessert and was not disappointed. I got a butter cookie, a cupcake, and a smile in return for a dollar. Grazie!

I was not aware that I'm a cannoli fan until I had Mike's cannoli. I'm a firm believer that you MUST try the "IT" item that made the food establishment famous. In this case, Mike's is famous for cannoli. I only bought 1 cannoli to-go and now I can't wait to go back and try other cannolis. The tiramisu was average and the rum cake was really bad. Stick with the cannoli and you'll be happy!

...but after trying the ones at Mike's - I know I like cannoli! Everyone says, "you have to go to Mike's." And I agree. If I were staying closer or if it were easier to get these things on the plane, I would have purchased more that just cannoli. Crazy, busy, fun atmosphere, good pastry at the right price! I just might have to check out the website and order some there. Seriously - when someone says, "you have to go Mike's!" They mean it! If only Iived closer....

I just have to say I love Mikes. I love the chaos and the atmosphere, their pastries are amazing! How many places can you get a cannoli dipped in dark chocolate, with chocolate chips on the end? If you want to sit and enjoy an espresso, just grab a table, they have table service. I have always found the people to be friendly, a smile and a Thank You goes a long way. It isn?t a place for people, who are indecisive, because typically even if the dining area is empty there is a line for the counter, but it moves quickly and when you get to the front you better know what you want or you miss your chance. If you want to hum and haw over all of their delectable goodies, which line half of the store, go at an off hour during the weekday. Or just look at their website, they have all the favorites, which is everything, listed with color photos.

I was brought up in the West End, until they tore it down. Every birthday when I was young my dad would get me one of Mike's great Rum Cake's. I live across the United States now in Oregon and wish they would send their cakes out here. Even better I would be extremely interested in opening up a Mike's pastry out here. They are the best!

PROS: Everything they sell is fantastic

One of the better cannolli's I have had outside of Italy. Tried other bakery items and all were great with the exception of one (cupcake too sweet!) It is average in cost if you are coming from the Midwest but well worth the $$. Crowds were unreal on Friday and Saturday nights! Go early if you want a treat for later.

Yes, there are a LOT of choices of pastries, pies, cookies, desserts, everything you can imagine in this place. However, I found that some of the other reviews had it right about the experience...what's with this shove your way in front of the line? My partner and I were standing at the counter alone when about 15 people came in off the street...we ended up being almost the last people served. The quality of the food was good for some items, not as great for others. Honestly, not the best cannolis I've ever had. I wouldn't say to avoid the place, just don't expect to be blown away either.

i went to mikes pastry so many times.and i luv it.They have table service and take out........i understand that some times when u go there, workers may not be nice or smily (because they r so busy)but if u didnt like the service u can always call and ask for the big boss. He is a great person polite and he will never ever let you down.........He is always in the store but if he is not his sister will be there to make sure every body is HAPPY :)

people dont like that when u step in to MIKES PASRTY u have to make your way to the midle of the store....................they like to make a line because its fare for every body......but thats not always a good idea because alot of people dont know what to get so thet keep looking and holding the line for so long.
so when u go just be ready and make sure you know what to get(but if u dont u can ask any body who's online or people that work there........they rso nice)

I work near by and go here once in awhile. The reviews are correct about lines etc. It is also over priced... example 3 lobster tails and some pizelles were $16.00.
Try Modern pastry less crowds, better pastry's and cheaper! Also you can tell Mike's pastry's are being massed produced, quality and taste has gone down.
If you must go to Mikes try a week day when there are barely any lines. Don't go on Sunday!!! HUGE MUCCA CROWDS due to tourists and church!! If you have a whole bunch of people with you leave them outsideand push your way to the front of the counter so you will be waited on.

I actually like this place (aside from the lines, semi-rude workers, and chaos). However, I special ordered a cake for a birthday party and the workers were rude. I ordered the strawberry cheesecake two weeks before I needed it and asked if I could have a message written on it. They said it would be fine. I called back a week later to confirm my pick-up time and they lost my order. I understand that, since I work in an office where paperwork is often lost. So, I re-ordered it. When I went to pick up the cake, I saw the message was written on the strawberry glaze and was reassured by the woman behind the counter that it would be fine. When I got home, my "happy birthday" message was destroyed.

I called to complain in the nicest way possible and the woman on the phone barely apologized.

I have had so many people rave to me about Mikes Pastry. I just don't get it. Their pastries aren't very good. I can get better at my local grocery store. My kids wouldn't even eat the pastries! There is no line in the bakery, so everyone stands and tries to be then next person to be waited on. The store was crowded and it took a long time to get someone to wait on us since there was no line. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to Modern instead. They have much better pastries and they have organized lines.

PROS: staff was nice
CONS: no line, pastries aren't good, crowded

Mike's Pastry Incorporated is a great place. The pastries here are truly fantastic. The pieces are very big and taste so good. You got a lot of choices of pastries to choose from.

A lot of students really love Mike's Pastry. Too bad there is only one store of Mike's Pastry. It should really expand into a chain.

I recommend the fruit parfait because it was downright aazing when I tried it.

It is supposed to be a great place in Boston.

Mike's Pastry is renowned as the place for tourists to go to grab a cannoli when they are in the North End. Although the pastries are good, sometimes it does not seem worth the hassle to elbow your way to the counter for your pastry. There is also limited seated so be prepared to take your item to go or eat it standing up. There are other pastry shops in the North End that are just as good without the hassle.

To the locals of Boston, its considered a cardinal sin if you make a visit to the North End, or any where near, and do not make a stop at Mike's Pastry.

Be prepared to wait in line, but the best things come to those who wait! The Cannollis here are to die for.

Great place to get pasty if you are looking to impress special house guests or stock up. Calling in is always recommended because you will be waiting in line and parking is TERRBILE.

Its nice little dessert place to stop, also, if you are planning on dining in the north end.

PROS: yummy pastry
CONS: Terrible parking

For anyone planning a day in the city...you must stop at Mike's Pastry in the North End. This is the coffee and dessert store of all coffee and dessert stores. Dont be intimidated by the herds of people or lines. Once you see the display cases full of traditional italian desserts, as well as others, you will be amazed. Everything is reasonably priced. You cannot find a better canoli, eclair, or lobster tail in Boston. There is even a big picture of Bill Clinton at Mike's behind the counter. It helps to go on a nice day as seating is limited, crowded, and first come first serve.

PROS: yummy desserts
CONS: limited seating

Worth a trip into Boston. Incredible Boston Creme Pie- cake is moist, chocolate not too sweet and the creme is just right. A variety of authentic, and delicious, traditional Italian pastries. Can be crowded at times, but is usually well-staffed so everything moves smoothly. Prices are actually very reasonable. Parking can be difficult to find, but what do you expect in Boston?

Avoid the rush and crowds of Mike's. If you are looking for the best cannoli in the north end go to Maria's and watch as they fill it in front of you. No lines or crowds and there is even a place to sit and enjoy this amazing treat.

I love everything about Boston, in fact one time in Quincy market while enjoying a cannoli from Mike`s pastry, I dropped it on a sewer grate and then picked it up and finished eating it I`m not proud of that, but they were that good.. By the way , I have never had a bad meal in Boston to date...

I bought the hype and stopped by since I was in the area. However what I found was that there really was no structured line, just a mob of people pushing their way to counter. People coming in off the street worked their way past me and my boyfriend who had been there for ten minutes already. I managed to make my way to the counter only to be ignored for another few minutes as everyone around me was helped. When I tried to speak up one of the workers got snippy with me. I would have left right then and there but I was really hankering for some canolis but after eating them I found they were nothing extraordinary and I could've gone somewhere else that was more friendly. With all the business they get, you'd think they could spring for some line dividers like they have at airports.

I have lived in New England my whole 30 years - Mikes is a nostalgic, typical busy Boston pastry shop that for me, when the cannollis are fresh, makes my 4 hour ride home to Vermont a little nicer. My kids are welcome there, I feel at home(I was born and raised in MA) Thank you for being consistent and so what if it's busy and crowded - it IS because the food is good!

Cons: , SMALL SPACE

Mike's Pastry is more of a tourist trap than a quality pastry shop. Modern Pastry across the street is the pastry shop that my Italian family consistently visits when we are looking for delicious desserts.

Mike's is an institution, and a well known one unfortunately, since it is not especially authenitc. If you walk down the street you will find Modern pastry, which though smaller represents the "real" North End. The tourists are the one's in Mike's, so to get great food and a true North End experience, try Modern.

Yes the north end is full of great bakeries and Mike's get over-run in the summer by tourists--But they still make wonderful cakes. Until Jan. 2003, I worked near there for a year and a half, and we always got our office birthday cakes. I started buying family cakes there as well. The chocolate fudge cake is to die for and I never had a problem with their service. A few workers could be surly when it was busy, but that happens in most bakeries when things get hectic. Overall I think it's still a sweet bet.

Mike's is skating on its location. Corn starch filled Cannoli's are a cardinal no-no for good Italian pasty. Dry, tasteless cookies, rude staff and an overcrowded eating area makes this place unpleasant. Fortunately there are many other options in the area that are more pleasant and have good food.

We love seeing those who do not know better walking around with Mike's Pastries' boxes. It screams "tourist." It's not worth the wait, the crush or the price, but as long as those people are crowding in there, they won't be in line in front of me at the good dessert places.

I think Mike's has the best cheesecake, I love the big slice for only $2.50, a bargain compared to the Cheesecake Factory, and a much better cheesecake, the whole experience is a fun, too!

I don't understand what all the hoopla is about. These are mass-produced, perpetually stale, egg-saturated concoctions. The north end is chock full of tasty bakeries, that don't have lines down the block. Don't waste your time or money here. Trust me, much like the Kate Spade bag, it turns out that you're not that cool walking down the street carrying a Mikes Pastry box.

Mike's is the most famous pastry shop in the North End. Lines are always huge, but you would be surprised how fast they move..it's like a machine inside that place. Huge selection of tasty desserts, and cheap! I got a big piece of tiramisu and choco. chip cheesecake for only $5. Get it to go! You won't enjoy eating inside.
