What made it unique or special?I wish I would have read some of these reviews before going to this sh--hole. I was facing the "kitchen", saw the disgusting food handling and unsanitary condition in which the food was prepared. The waitor was cutting slices of cake and LICKING HIS FINGERS right before serving it to customers, without washing his hands.
We really only wanted tea, we bought some for home.

Tonight, I called several minutes ahead to place an order and spoke to such a smug, rude b-tch. First, she told me they were very busy.

She says "for future reference", teas can be bought online. So, I thought..really? so I should pay $8 dollars to wait 5 days to ship tea across the river? is it that big of a deal to put the already pre-canned teas in a bag, you cu-t? (I didn't say this to her)
She hung up the phone on me.

I arrived a few minutes later, received a very rude and cold attitude when she realized that I was there to pick up the order.

I simply took my tea and left...for the second and last time.

It?s appalling how owners allow such treatment of customers.

Well I went to NYC for a vaca and I to start I have a big appetite but first of all for everyone complaining about portions: i do not believe there was anything hidden on the theme and setting attached to Teany it was exactly what it was meant to be. (go to Mcdonalds bigger portions crappy food) I went there knowing to have a small dish and something good to drink. I was treated well and I came from a state of great customer service so I thought for it being NYC and a small Tea Cafe' i got what I should of. Thank You Teany and staff

Pros: reserved and a healthy way to relax from the real world

Cons: off the beatin path almost didn't find Teany being from Wisconsin

I really like this place, the atmosphere is good and the food is lovely. However, the portions are so tiny, I always leave hungry. The size of the portions are actually embarassingly small! I wont go again because of this, but if you have a small appetite and don't need value for money, the food is really great.

Heard a lot about this place so I made it a destination point during my visit to NYC. When I first walked in, I was rather confused whether to seat myself or have someone seat me. There was no sign and none of the 3 staff members greeted me from the counter so I just kinda stood there while the waitress finished counting her tips. Finally she told me I could sit anywhere, so I did. She handed me a tea menu & food menu, then later came to take my order. I ordered the afternoon tea ($22)with some Earl Grey Creme tea. I got my tea, but wasn't offered sweetener or creamer. The couple that walked in after me was offered both so when the server came back, I asked for it. When I received my tray with the sandwiches, I had the ham w/cucumber and the chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad sandwich left my mouth raw, as if someone sandpapered it. The next plate on the tea tray was a scone with a side of cream spread & jam. Silverware was never offered and the server never came to check - I used the teaspoon that came with my tea. The last item was my Oreo cupcake (the menu said I had the option of brownie, cupcake, or one other dessert, but the server only allowed me to choose from their choice of cupcakes). When I finished my tea & wanted a refill of hot water, no one came by to check. The whole experience left me wondering if I was supposed to tip the server because I wasn't exactly waited on like a normal restaurant but they made it seem like they did enough so that a tip was probably expected.
Being 6 months pregnant on a solo trip to NYC, I didn't expect to work so hard for service, walking out of my way to find this place for a $22 per person meal. I went back to friends and the next day had delicious dim sum in Chinatown with automatic refills on tea and it came out to $30 for 4 people; the following day, $50 for 9 people. I don't care for pretentious places that don't deliver and then expect to be paid above average.

We always go to Teany when in NYC. The food is Very Good - the vegan quiche is excellent, try that or the pasties. I'm not one to always finish my plate, but even I think the portions are a bit small here. Sometimes I think the prices are a bit high, but then I remember that we are in New York! The raspberry lime rickey is a great alternative to the tea. The only disappointment so far has been the desserts - the chocolate peanut butter mousse cake was gross.

A friend and I ventured to Teany on 2 separate trips to NYC. It's a bit out of the way, but that is clearly one of it's charms. The staff is extremely friendly and quick to seat you, but give you a chance to pour over the extensive tea menu before they come back around. No hovering, which is always a plus!
Both times I have gone I have gotten the scone of the day toasted w/ clotted cream and jam. The presentation is lovely and the food as been great each time I have visited. Try the green sea anemone tea!! :)

I will definitely trek my way back over on my next NYC trip!

For all the oinkers out there complaining about Teany's small portions, I thought it was a descent amount of food, not too much like a Tex-Mex place, but not like an amuse-bouche that constitutes as an entree at Nobu. I think part of the deal with Teany is encouraging healthy eating, and that includes not overdoing it with proportions of food.
Anyway..I had the vegetarian BLT for lunch, along with a green tea and an oreo cookie cupcake for dessert, and was quite pleased with my meal. Another time I ordered the Heinz beans and toast with cheese, and that was the definitely the best and not a heavy meal!
My only food complaint was the dessert, a rasberry/strawberry yogurt cake..it tasted like an old yoplait yogurt made into a gellatin cakey mess.
The atmosphere is very cute and homey, but it can get a bit cramped, especially when you have a family of 8 trying to sit down with their 5 kids running around. Hello, people! It's a small restaurant, obviously it's not meant to seat a party of 15! But I have always enjoyed going there for a spot of tea and scones.

Pros: great veg food, nice waiters, cool vibe, sweet teas

Cons: can be cramped

They have an impressive list of teas and some great tasting bottled teas. But beyond that, this place has nothing to offer. I wanted to like Moby's joint, but the food is below average and overpriced and the atmosphere is lacking. Uninspired, generic and kinda' run-down. There's no reason I would ever go back - much better places to sit and enjoy a pot/cup of tea or have a sandwhich. Sorry, Moby.

This place is very small, but lucky for us, there were few tables with patrons on this Saturday afternoon. I think that's why we were so disappointed when we ordered one type of scone and received the type we didn't order! Well, rather than make a fuss, we just ate the ones we were given (lemon poppyseed). They were very good, however, so I can't really complain about it. The service was otherwise decent. The tea selection is very good - this is a cute, modern tearoom indeed.

Teany's food is quite good and all-vegetarian. The downsides are that the prices are extremely high for casual dining. In addition, the waitstaff is often rude and unpleasant.

I have to say, the best part about Teany was seeing Moby. Okay, got that out of my system. Teany is a great little shop with a wide selection of quality teas. Whether your fancy be green tea to coconut flavored tea, Teany is the place to be. Great for people watching, resting your feet and grabbing a bite to eat. I can't decide between sitting outdoors or indoors. Outdoors offers the great opportunity to people-watch while indoors you get to groove to Moby's electic mix of cafe-appropriate music. An excellent, polite waitstaff transforms the tiny space from something potentially chaotic into something pleasant. Definately worth a try.

Special teas to sip and scrumptious vegan goodies, salads and sandwiches to enjoy while sitting in a (covered) warm, outdoor cafe - what could be better on a sunny, cold afternoon on the lower east side! Plus, I could buy all of my holiday gifts at teany :)

Master musician Moby owns this Tea emporium. They have a great variety of hot tea as well as some of there own bottled cold brand. They also have some nice treats made with absolutely no meat or dairy products. I think I saw the guy from Coldplay who married Gynetth Paltrow in line ebhind me once. Very clost to Economy Candy the worlds greatest candy store.

This is a wonderful place for true tea lovers. It is not a good place for large groups but great when taking a break with one or two friends. Their food is also very delicious to go with tea. They also have nice decoration and overall a relaxing place to be.

I had afternoon tea with a friend of mine a few months ago at Teany. Another friend of mine had given me the thumbs up concerning the place, so I decided it would be a nice place to catch up with an old friend, and I was really impressed.
I'm not a vegetarian, but I thought the menu had a nice variety of veggie choices that anyone, including me, could enjoy. My friend and I ordered the afternoon tea, and the sandwiches were amazing, and the scones are some of the best I've ever had (I used to live in Scotland, so I've eaten a lot of scones while having tea). The petit fours were a bit deranged looking, but they tasted great...their presentation just needed a little work.
I highly suggest coming down to the LES to check this place out. It's definitely worth the commute.

I had to try out Moby's vegetarian restaurant while I was visiting NYC, and I was not disapopinted. The sandwiches were great and the other entrees were good too. The tea selection was gigantic and they were delicious. It is a nice casual little cafe.

PROS: Casual, relatively inexpensive
CONS: Hard to choose which tea to drink

This place is awesome...you must get the tea for one or tea for two, if you have a friend with you. You get 2 sandwiches each (out of a choice of like 5) cut into little triangles, crust cut off, a scone each with butter and jam, and petit-fours (minature desserts) all served on a three tiered tray. You also get your choice of 4 teas....one pot per person! Tea for two is only $28! And it is a generous portion of food. You leave there full but not stuffed. It is amazing!!!!!!!!! Even my boyfriend liked it!

We try to get here every few weeks for the delicious teas, scones and finger sandwiches. I'm far from vegan, but I still love the food here. Whenever I feel like I need a break from meat, I think of Teany first. The Earl Grey Creme tea rocks and after downing a pot each of it, we purchase a tin to take home.

perhaps I stumbled upon the wrong and counterfeit Teany while looking for the real one because value is not accurate here. I had vegan chicken salad that wasn't bad, but I could have made it at home, and eaten a lot more, and not paid $9 for it. They do have a lot of tea. and the vegan cheesecake was excellent.

In NYC, where dinner typicly follows sticker-shock, Teany is a great place for a good, unique meal that leaves you feeling satisfied and your wallet feeling full.

Try the tea service (just $14 includes a pot of tea, tea sandwiches, warm scone, dessert, and other goodies), and come by yourself or with a friend. Teany isn't good for big groups.

teany is just that: "teeny"; however, teany is a really cute place to go on a date. i went there with a guy that i was dating, and he absolutely loved it! it's even great for individuals like myself who are making a transition from being a carnivore to becoming a vegetarian/vegan. the service is kinda slow, but this could be seen as a plus, if you're the type to linger over a meal and good conversation.

I just recently visited Teany for the third time, and I have to say its quickly turning into my favorite vegan spot in the city. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, the soups are tasty but by far the best thing about Teany has to be the highly addictive vegan turkey club sandwhich. My goal is to try all 96 teas they serve there, so I guess I'll have to visit another 93 times!

Refreshing summer teas, cozy spot. Great lunchtime afternoon tea spot with a friend, can order a combo of various finger sandwiches. Clean spare spot, service does tend towards the slow side. Caught a glimpse of Moby. Can be very crowded on the weekends, hard to find a seat then.

Good place for afternoon weekday tea.

This place is adorable and the food is good enough to satisfy even meateaters. The fake turkey club is really good and the crostini spreads are original and delicious. There are so many tasty tea drinks that it's hard to choose. Also, the service is fine, outdoor seating is a plus, and it's inexpensive. I'll definitely go back for more.

I went here with my boyfriend (a meat eater) and he REALLY likes to have his meat, so he didn't enjoy as much as I did. But I had the Turkey Club sandwich and IT WAS SO GOOD. The bacon and turkey tasted like real turkey....the bread was perfect. Another time I had the goat cheese sandwich but it was too tiny..hardly enough filling and mostly bread taste...eh. I did try their Chocolate Peanut Butter Bomb though. I CANNOT believe that dessert is Vegan...it's so PLEASURABLE. I even ordered one to go home with!! I'm going back there tomorrow just for the dessert and turkey club.

I did try their Chocolate Peanut Butter Bomb though. I CANNOT believe that dessert is Vegan...it's so PLEASURABLE. I even ordered one to go home with!! I'm going back there tomorrow just for the dessert and turkey club.

Pros: Good Vegan food!, Courteous service, Cute small setting

Cons: Not romantic, not good for groups, Smalllll portions

Ever since my first trip to england, I have lamented America's lack of appreciation for tea. The first time I went to Teany changed my opinion forever. Teany proves that there are a growing number of New Yorkers at least who understand the pleasure of sitting for hours over a drink that seems so simple, yet can be so incredibly satisfying when done right. Teany is the absolute best tea house I've been to in the country, and it vies with the best in GB as well. Oh, and the food and wait staff are absolutely fabulous as well!

This is my favorite veggie place in the city. The teas are great, but the real lure for me is the food. Afternoon tea special with finger sandwiches is outstanding. The scones are sweet and the ham and cheese sandwich is rich and filling. The best dessert is the peanut butter bomb with smooth whipped peanut butter over a rich chocolate cake. Yum! It's a small place, and it can get crowded, but the cuteness makes up for that.

Though small, Teany is a really nice place to just hang out and catch up with friends. The wait staff is really friendly and they always seem to have a smile on their faces. Teany has a huge selection of teas and some excellent vegan fare. I'm not vegan, but I tried their desserts not expecting anything special... their Chocolate Peanut Butter cake is GRRREEEEAATT!!! (a la Tony the Tiger). Mind you... I like chocolate and peanut butter, but this cake really surprised me. I'm not even sure how they got the thing to be so moist. =)

I was brought to TEANY by a friend who "swore" that it was great...

I was not let down. The teas were both abundant and fabulous (which came in open loose tea bags). I tried 4 different types and loved them all. The food was amazing (Turkey Club!, all kinds of pie, platters) (and I'm not a veggie or a vegan).

If you're in the Lower E. Side and there is a table available, go to Teany!

Moby's teany IS teeny, but luckily the Saturday night we went it wasn't too crowded. I was going to get the chai latte, but figured since I always have that at other places, I would try one of the dozens of teas that are so wonderfully described. I got the almond tea, and it was delicious, as was the vegan peanut butter cake (actually, that was more like heavenly). Great music, very laid back. Cool place to just hang out.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first headed to Teany for a snack--being a vegan I've made it a point to check out every vegan restaurant in New York. It was smaller than expected, and in a slightly unusual neighborhood.. how New York! I wasn't really expecting much from the cafe-like menu and the smallest kitchen I've ever seen... But the food was really excellent, and the atmosphere and decor was kind of cute, despite the claustrophobic quarters. Unfortunately the pesto salad was so big and so good that I didn't have room for any of the vegan desserts, which looked great too!

everything on the menu is excellent and has a homey deliciousness! the sandwiches are a fav. service is always fast and the staff is great... BUT THE DESERTS ARE AMAZING !!!! they are the best in this price range in NYC. stop by and hang at Teany for a while - you won't be dissappointed.

This place IS very teeny. Decor and vibe are "cool", but laid-back. Moby was there, being very unpretentious. We got middle eastern platter and "turkey" sandwich. Turkey sandwich was very tasty. Middle eastern platter was OK. I'm used to "traditional" middle eastern food, but this was a bit different, esp. the tabouleh. In addition, the olives appeared to be out of a jar/can, i.e., they were already pitted. I expected better olives. There's a whole section in the menu dedicated to "tea". Therefore, I was surprised when we ordered a pot of tea, and were given a pot with a tea bag in it, as opposed to a pot with loose tea. I definitely expected loose tea, considering the fact that tea is such a big part of this place, and considering the kitchen had shelves of those small airtight storage containers, which I assumed were for the loose tea.

I had so much fun when I ate at Teany. I'm not into Moby's music but his restaurant serves an awesome Middle Eastern dinner platter!

Plus if you're the type that can't drink coffee this place is a godsend!

I know absolutely nothing about tea, but I've had a good luck with the great breakfasts at Teany. The Teany Bagel is delicious! If you're not a vegan (and I'm not even close), don't sweat it. You won't miss a thing; I didn't. Very friendly and cheerful staff.

The outside seating is great for people watching, yet romantic enough for a date. The food is AMAZING and I was quite impressed with the sangria. I love how the food is really fresh, the portions are generous and well presented.

Teany definitely has a great tea selection. I enjoyed an iced herbal tea and a cherry streudel on a hot afternoon. I went on a Sunday afternoon and I was one of two people in this teeny place. I hope it was just quiet because everyone's on vacation since I'd like this place to stick around a while.
