The University of Missouri-Columbia, or UMC, is best known for its Journalism School and it's Vet Med/Sciences School. However, as a former non-traditional student, I attended as an undergrad in my thirties and also had a disability, I was not made to feel as welcome as the 'average' students. My experience in newspaper reporting meant nothing to the professors in the J-School and one was even more put off my the fact that I had a learning disability, even though I proved myself over and over again.
As a single parent, the stress was too much and the hours expected for the Missourian, the community newspaper run by the students of the Journalism school, would not work for me as a head of household.
Although accepted, I declined entrance and became an English major. And I write for a newspaper again!
There are good and bad, like with everything, everywhere. Good teachers, good programs. You just have to look carefully and hold your own, don't back down from your dream.
There are others who related similar stories of 'non-acceptance' for being 'non-traditional' as a student.
And just when are they going to rename the "Married Student Housing?" This is 2006!

PROS: Since it's a state school, the price is a little lower than most.
CONS: Must be out of high school to be treated fairly.

University of Missouri Columbia is the largest among the University of Missouri campuses. It is best known academically for its journalism school. Not a bad choice to get your degree here as student life if great. The college town atmosphere has lots to offer culturally and offers a variety of activities for many interests. However, since UMC or MU as it is usually called is so large, you get a mixture of good and the not-so-good students types leaving the overall average to be simply that - average. I did a couple of grad school classes here and really enjoyed student life here. The campus is large enough to have something for everyone. I personally don't think the education is as good as Wash U for example but the focus is a bit different here.

PROS: Great student life
CONS: Not very highly ranked
