Lantern was OK but not all that. They know how to make chicken peneng but the wait staff can be inattentive and at times rude depending on whose there at a particular evening.

I use to call for delivery once in a while on a rainy day or a cold one. The order would take a long time to come to my place and the way the food was packed in the bag my drinks and meal were turned over. There were times mistakes were

I live behind this restaurant & I used to order from here back in 2008. Then the management changed and for the last 3 years I've seen the staff piss, smoke & f*ck in the alley behind the restaurant. They cook with the two back doors WIDE

I've been to Lantern several times, and find the food to be good. I love the green papaya salad, and the pineapple fried rice. The staff have been nothing but courteous and friendly. Don't know how there could be such a discrepancy in how I get served and how badly some say they have gotten served.

Great penang chicken! They have great drinks, and their mojitos are fabulous in the summer time, along with their lychee mojito. Very good pineapple rice, appetizers, and curries. Very pleasant staff and good pricing for the amount of entree you get. I always end up taking home leftovers.

Pros: convenient location

I hate to tell everyone the bad news but this place failed to impress me and my boyfriend. the spring roll and the tai rice didnt quite cut it for us. the food really made me feel sick and luckily made it back to my office in time. My credit card was charged twice my meal should have been 15 dollars instead of 35. The thing that really got me was we wanted an outside table and instead the waitress gave it to a couple who got their after we did how rude, we were there first. I ended up going to the ladies room 3 times the food must have been really bad and my mans coffee tasted like real spring water how gross. There is only one place where i get served really well and get good delivery and my friends and family know what restaurant that is and where it is.

THE BEST of THE BEST in Brooklyn Heights! I've been going to 'Lantern' once or sometimes three times a month since it's opened. My husband and I are very impressed by the quality of their food and the generous and kind staff every time we are there. Their food is generally much less oily than most Thai restaurants I've been to and their vegetables and meat are always very fresh. Their Pad-Thai is one of the best I've ever tasted! Sweet, savory with a wide variety of ingredients e.g.:shrimp, vegetables etc and not oily at all. I often get stomach-ache when I eat oily food like spring rolls but I've never had any problems at Lantern. I like the chef's new experimental dishes like 'Cream Cheese with crab meat'. Sounds too heavy? No way! It's creamy but very light. I like their Volcano Chicken as well; its sweet and smoky taste melts in your mouth. My husband's favorite, yellow curry noodle is also delicious. Every time we have friends visiting our neighborhood we take them to the Lantern and they all loved the food and atmosphere. Their staff is also very kind. I really don't know what other patrons are complaining about.... even when there are only two of us going, they will pull two tables together for us if the restaurant is not full so we can sit more comfortably. All the staff who work there are smiley and friendly, so I have no idea what other people are talking about... In the Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill area, there are at least 4 Thai restaurants; we've tried them all, but 'Lantern' is by far the best.
We just came from 'Lantern' tonight, had a grilled pork-chop (Smoky, sweet, savory, gingery, lots of vegetables), Thai-Sangria (with Lychee!), Thai-Dumplings, Thai-noodles and Mango-sweet sticky rice and left feeling like we were "In Heaven"!
I give Lantern the best of the best!!! Take my advice, go to the Lantern! SoHee

This is without doubt my favorite Thai restaurant. I've been to a lot of Thai restaurants and after a while, you get used to the same old, pad thai, but the Lantern gives a special zing and zest to all of their dishes. The atmosphere there is always inviting, whether you're looking for an intimate dinner for two, or a large party. In summer, we've been there when they open the large, glass doors at the front allowing the harbor breeze to flow in straight from New York harbor. In the winter, we've had cozy, romantic meals there enjoying the soft glow of all the little candles they hang in lanterns from the ceiling. I am honestly astonished to read some of the negative reviews of this place. I have been going to the Lantern for many years, and have never been disappointed. I take business clients there all the time, including guests from overseas and they are always impressed. Don't buy the negativity in these reviews. Trust me, this place offers the best value, best atmosphere, and most delicious food in Brooklyn Heights. I know that's not saying much (what else is there!) but this place competes with the best Thai food I've had anywhere. GO! You won't be disappointed.

I love the food here but have only been able to take out so I usually call and order a delicious tofu dish with a request for soft tofu as opposed to fried. Something always gets lost in translation and I receive the fried tofu and have to return the food for the correct order. The only time I didn't have this problem was when a guy there answered the phone, otherwise the woman that answers (not sure if it's the same woman each time) is limited in her English and always gets it wrong. Needless to say it's become more trouble than it's worth and I definitely think twice before ordering here.

This was my third time at Lantern. My boyfriend and I really enjoy it. I don't know what the other patrons are talking about. We have never encountered anything but friendly staff. The only minor incident was that they accidentally put chicken in the dish instead of shrimp. Boohoo. Cry me a river. Overall, the food is pretty good for Thai.

Me and my family have been eating at lantern for over 6months once a week sometimes when people have an incident at a retaurant they let it go and give the place a second chance. these people had more then one chance. we asked to combine 4 tables together for lunch on a sat afternoon, instead of trying to help out they looked at us and said listen you cant take up this much space we lose money like this. With the amount of people we had we needed at least 4or5 tables for 3 children and 2 adults it wasnt like they had a line waiting. I can understand when a place gets busy on the weekend there is some pressure but they dont know how to handle pressure they start to yell at people the waitress would say the store is busy are you ready to order give it to me now. Iam sorry there is no way i would set foot in a place like that very mean people. Its not my fault they get stuck in jobs like this.

Food - OK at best
Decor - Considered & Well Thought out
Service - Dismal

Best avoided, there are better places to go. Ended the evening feeling stressed & annoyed at shoddy service where staff specialized in looking busy whilst not doing anything to service guests in the slightest. The only thing excelled at was the ability to avoid & ignore catching anyone's gaze.

As the food on Montague street goes, this is one of the better places, but that's not saying much. If you can't make it over to Smith street, this is one of your better bets. But expect rude, rude, rude service and forget about calling -they only seem to answer their phone 20% of the time.

I'm staying at the Marriott Hotel Brooklyn Bridge. On the hotel hand-out map there were some local restaurants listed. Lantern Thai was one of those restaurants. I should have known right away to steer clear (any restaurant that advertises on a local hotel's map is suspect), but the concierge recommended it. I ordered in.

Right now I have a bag full of food on my hotel room bathroom floor waiting for the maid to trash it. The Shu Mai tasted like purated dog doo. If that's how you spell purated. The massaman and panang curries were just atrocious. Absolutely unedible. The only thing remotely edible was the brown rice. This is not food, unless you consider garbage or purated dog doo food. If so, you will love The Lantern. Be Warned!!!!!

We have lived in Brooklyn Heights with kids for years and for the past few years have been regularly going to Lantern, a Thai restaurant on Montague St. I don't want to say that I am a regular but by going there almost once a week, I felt that we had been good patrons of the place.

Last Friday, we arrive with 5 adults, 3 kids and a new born around 6PM. The terasse was rather full but inside the restaurant, the place was empty.

When we asked to be seated inside and to have 4 small tables put together as we were 8 to eat, the waiter, a young Thai guy, started telling us that 3 tables would be enough. I first thought that he had not understood what we meant and therefore we insisted that 3 small tables would be enough to seat 5 adults and 3 kids. He started complaining that they probably would need the table. I pointed out that it was not like people were lining up around the block waiting for a table as they had over 40 empty tables inside.
When the waited started to get rather rude, we complained to the manager who decided to stick by her waiter...
well, I do not know how most of you working in the service industry feel, but I never get restaurant managers that decide to side by a rude waiter vs. 8 customers.

Needless to say that we decided to take our business somewhere else: the food is clearly NOT THAT good to be treated like this. We then went to a lovely new Asian Bistro still on 118 Montague between Henry and Hicks, called "Tenda - Asian Bistro". They have a great garden; the food is actually very good and the service was extremely friendly.

I was close to going back to Lantern and showing the manager the amount of our tab for our dinner but felt it was not worth my time.

A word of advice: it takes a while for a restaurant to build a good reputation based on food quality and service and as you can see, 5 minutes to destroy it.

I will never go back and spend my money there that's for sure.
