My wife and I moved to Chicago last summer. We both previously had been seeing our dentist every 6 months. We both needed a dental check up this year.
I went to an office for an examination and I was told I needed 2 fillings replaced and also 1 crown and my wife needed several "old" fillings replaced. As we have always seen a dentist every six months for both a cleaning and examination, I was shocked to say the least. I talked with a friend and he suggested we go to his dental office, Michigan Avenue Dental Associates. When I booked my appointment with Michigan Avenue Dental Associates, the front staff was very considerate of our time restrictions. I was informed what would be done on my 1st visit and also knew what to bring with me on that first visit.
48 hours before my appointment, I received a confirmation call to remind me of the time and day of my appointment. When I arrived, I was greeted by the front office staff and they welcomed me to the practice.
After meeting with the dentist and discussing the reason for my visit, I was taken to the treatment room. The doctor looked at my x-rays from the previous office, did and examination and discussed his findings. Needless to say, I did not need 2 fillings or 1 crown and the doctor explained to my wife that her fillings placed many years ago would probably hold up for another 10 years.
I was thrilled and can only say, "Thank you Michigan Avenue Dental Associates." You are awesome.

The worst - ever! I don't even know where to begin, but I will have to say this, I read the reviews on Yelp and Citysearch about this dentist and they seemed to be ok. , but my experience at Dr. Douglas James's office was beyond awful.

Outstanding dentist. He doesn't make a mountain out of a mole hill. Go to see him if you want a conservation approach to your dental needs. He doesn't look for problems.
There are several specialists in his practice. I like knowing there

Thank you Linda for recommending I change my insurance to a PPO. My HMO was terrible!!! They only covered cleanings and had restrictions on everything else. Your staff is nice and so are the doctors.

I love this place. Everyone is on point and the service was excellent! What more could you ask for. This was in fact my first time going there but I can guarantee you I will always continue to go there from now on. So if anyone out there needs dental work, run, don??t walk to this place. I??m referring my wife to them.

The doctors work as a team and they were very helpful to me in terms of getting an idea of what my options were and what the costs/benefits of various options would be. I shopped around at other dentists in the area and did considerable independent research to get a better understanding of my options. I liked the idea of having several doctors on your side. They all were looking out for my best interests and showed compassion.

I had four implants, four crowns, and four veneers done. Implants by Dr. Biama, the periodontist, crowns by Dr. James, general dentist, and my veneers by Dr. Traina, a general dentist. . No one doctor can be great at everything. So this team approach of dental professionals made the entire procedure comfortable for me and the quality of the result is outstanding. They had a tremendous amount of experience and very impressive technology that my prior dentist did not have and could not provide. I am extremely pleased with the results and I would highly recommend anyone to Michigan Avenue Dental Associates. If you have a dental problem-----let them show you their skill and professionalism. See how they can give you an amazing smile.

I am blessed to have had the opportunity to be a patient for 10 years of Michigan Avenue Dental Associates. I started as a young teenager, had preventative sealants placed on my teeth , had orthodontic work done and I do not have any fillings, absolutely ZERO. They inspired me to clean my teeth thoroughly daily and I do and consequently have not had a ONE cavity. They emphasized prevention to me at an early age and I am grateful for that.

I write alot of reviews. Some are critical and some are complimentary. Today I visited Michigan Avenue Dental Associates and my review is a complimentary review. My experience today was unexpected and unique for me. I have good teeth. Hardly any fillings. Yesterday I broke a back tooth and it hurt like hell, I didn't sleep a wink last night.I could see that it broke in half from front to back. The tongue side of the tooth was waving in the breeze. I asked a co-worker this morning for a reference of dentist downtown. She said many people at our company go to Michigan Avenue Dental Asociates. So I called them. They fitted me in as best they could this morning for my emergency. Dr. James saw me. An x-ray was taken. Not to my surprise he said,"Unfortunately the tooth will need to be removed." He also said I needed a protective appliance for the rest of my teeth because he noted I was a grinder. I knew I was a grinder, My previous dentist noted it too, but he never emphasized how important it was to address my night grinding. He just made a passing comment. Dr. James on the other hand indicated it was imperative to address my grinding or else additional teeth of mine would be fracturing and/or chipping, one at a time, not necessarily needing to be extracted, but needing some fillings or crowns. After a confirmatory diagnosis by another dentist, (I like the idea of a group practice that works so professionally together), he fortunately took out the tooth today. The nerve was exposed and I didn't sleep a wink last night and having it taken out today was a blessing, even though I know I messed up his schedule. I'm going back for a protective guard and an implant. I wish I had gone to this office years ago. Thanks everyone for treating my terrible problem situation so professionally. And look forward in seeing everyone at my next visit.

Michigan Avenue Dental Associates has been the dental office I have been going to for many years. I have great confidence in their work. Their fees are relatively standard for the area. But what is most important is the honestly and ethics they have. I would never go to another dental office and take my chance the dentist is as ethical and honest as the doctors at Michigan Avenue Dental Associates have multiple times demonstrated to me and my friends whom I have referred to the office over the years. Go here if you want honest, upfront and kind/gentle treatment.

Went in with a tooth ache last week thinking I was going to have to have my tooth removed it hurt so bad, but came out with a nice looking filling. I've been coming here for several years and have great confidence in your treatments. Dr. James is the best. Linda, Thank you for your help with my insurance, if you can call my HMO an insurance company. It only covers the very, very basics and doesn't cover quality work, long lasting work or good looking work. Thanks Terry for the kindness you have always shown me when I have my teeth cleaned. You guys make a good team and I write this review so others know that they can always come to you and receive quality work in a beautiful office with beautiful people. Thanks again for my new filling and thanks for all the years you have provided me with such good care.

I originally came to Michigan Avenue Dental Associates a couple of years ago for a second opinion from a recommendation by my wife The previous dentist I had been seeing always seemed to fine something wrong every time I went in. I just got tired of the same old same old, so I listened to my wife and saw the dentist whom she has been seeing who regularly has determined everything was OK with her, even though she has a lot of childhood fillings as about as old as she is and he doesn't tell her she needs them replaced. All she needs is to stop the grinding habit she knows she has been doing and Dr. James told her about it and finally she agreed to have him make her one, after she recently broke a tooth weakened from her night grinding. .He made her a night appliance for grinding.......to prevent problems from occurring, not just waiting and watching until something expensive is needed .I liked his preventative approach. She should have taken his advise earlier. So I went in and yes I still have some old fillings that haven't been replaced yet, but he said they are holding their own, no need to replace them, and he will alert me if there should be any change that really necessitates their expensive replacement. He said even though the fillings maybe "old", they would probably would last at least 10 or more years. I am certain if I was still with my prior dentist I would have three more expensive crowns by now. I appreciate the conservative approach Dr. James takes.

I highly recommend Michigan Avenue Dental Associates for all of your dental needs. It is very hard for me to believe there are any negative review about this dental office. I am one that does not like going to the dentist or having any type of dental work done. I have had the most wonderful experience at the Michigan Avenue Dental Associates. After experiencing a lot of pain in a tooth that had a root canal done in 2006 I was sent back to the office that did the original root canal near my home in the suburbs. I was not comfortable having them do the procedure again or any other type of procedure. I was talking to a friend about my situation and she recommended me calling Dr. James at Michigan Avenue Dental Associates. He was very willing to help me and recommended I call his office on a Thursday to see the endodontist. The day I called the office I was pleasantly assisted by Linda who not only helped me in my situation but made me feel so at ease. She talked to Dr. Rocha while I was on hold and then told me Dr. Rocha would be able to see me that day at 3:00pm to evaluate my tooth. Since I live in the suburbs I was happy that I had a few hours to get together and get myself there on time. The parking was so easy. I was able to park in the building right behind the office. I know in future appointments there is plenty of other parking around or I can take the train. When I arrived at the office I was greeted by Linda and other staff members who were very welcoming. The office is beautiful and very clean. Let me remind you again that I do not like going to the dentist at all. However this dental office and the staff made sure I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in the door. Dr. Rocha examined my situation and was able to retreat my root canal that day. I knew I had finally come to the right place. Not only did she do all the normal root canal work, but she also took x-rays during the procedure and was very thorough. She was concerned about the amount of infection so she packed it with antibiotics and I came back two weeks later for her to do it again. Hearing that I had to return to the dentist was something that someone like me, someone who does not like going to the dentist, did not want to hear. However I knew I was getting the absolute best care possible. The second treatment went well and I am so thankful that I could have this procedure done at the office with Dr. Rocha. During this visit I also met with Dr. James who evaluated and removed two of my wisdom teeth that were actually in my mouth as regular teeth (not impacted) but that had started to decay. I had agonized over this need to have them removed for years. If only I knew how simple the procedure could have been having it done by such an excellent dentist, I would have had it done years ago. Dr. James was the best dentist I could have asked for! I was in no pain during the procedure and he took both teeth out with so much ease. Dr. James and his assistant made sure I was comfortable not only during the procedure but after as well. They gave me magazines to read while I waited in the chair for what happened to be only a few minutes. Dr. James also took the time to discuss the procedure with me and how to care for it at home. They called me at home and continued to check up on me to see how I was doing after the procedures. I returned to the office a few weeks later to see Dr. James and have him repair and finish my crown. Dr. James is a highly competent and skilled dentist. He is extremely friendly and knows how to take care of his patients. He makes going to the dentist a very positive experience. These past three visits at Michigan Avenue Dental Associates were better than I could ever ask for. I do not remember all of their names but everyone that cared for me while at the office was caring and very professional and I know I was given top notch treatment at this office. I will be returning in a few weeks for a cleaning and checkup. Visiting this office is completely worth the drive downtown because I know I will receive wonderful care. I highly recommend this dental office for all off your dental needs. The staff is gracious and they all work together to efficiently take care of your dental needs in the finest way possible. I highly recommend Michigan Avenue Dental Associates!

I highly recommend this dental office for all off your dental needs. The staff is gracious and they all work together to efficiently take care of your dental needs in the finest way possible. I highly recommend Michigan Avenue Dental Associates!

I have been a patient at Michigan Avenue Dental Associates for many years and have always been very pleased with my care. Dr James always provides me Top quality care and if I have ever had an issue it was addressed immediately and to my satisfaction. I also really enjoy the care and time the hygienist Megan takes with me at each of my cleaning visits. They treat you personally , follow up with phone calls after your appointment and you don't feel as if you are just another number. If you are looking for a new Dentist I highly recommend their office.

Since I was young, I've dreaded going to the dentist. Needless to say, I'll never fear the dentist again. After my experience at Michigan Avenue Dental I've not only realized how imperative it is to take care of your smile, but I've also realized that a dentist is nothing to fear. In all my past experiences, no other group of people have worked so well with their patients. No other persons have had the patience, kindness, and just overall positive attitude as this team. Even the atmosphere of the place was welcoming and comforting. They'll do whatever it takes to make you feel more relaxed and more at home. When you walk in, you can't help but feel a bit at ease. In other traditional dentist offices, you'll see small, closed rooms with probably no windows, but at Michigan Avenue Dental you have a beautiful view of Lake Michigan!! And the whole office is open which gives you a welcoming and a more comfortable feeling. I also loved how instead of overwhelming you with little booklets of startling teeth related illinesses, they had your typical fashion magazines and others to choose from. They don??t try to overwhelm their patients or chide them for what they??re not doing, but at the same time, they??re being helpful and you leave knowing full well what you must improve on in order to have a healthier smile. Overall, they were a great group of people working together to get their jobs done and at the same time make you feel 100% comfortable. They understand that many people dread the dentist and go out of their way to make their patients feel at home. They deserve five stars, in my opinion.

Michigan Avenue Dental is an ideal place to go for any dental needs you may have. The have all the dental specialists in house . My wife goes to a female dentist there and I go see Dr. James. Dr. James is a very skilled general dentist. One with many years of experience. Unfortunately, I know the difference, by trial and error, between an experienced doctor or dentist and one without years of experience. I now only go to a doctor who has been out of school for at least ten years. Dr. James is conservative and doesn't go looking in your mouth just to find some work to keep him busy. That is being ethical. Unfortunately some dentists are not. I learned this from experience. I recommend the whole office. They have specialists in the office so you don't have to go far and you can get a specialist's second opinon. A dentsit working just by him/herself doesn't have the advantage of having specialists in house and the patient doesn't have the advantage of other dentists looking over their shoulder making sure ever patient is treated properly and get the best care. I recommend them highly.

I want to add to my review I made last week. Last week I was over joyed to have completed the last of my three appointments for my deep cleaning gum treatments Finally after three appointments at the office, changing my oral cleaning habits and six weeks later my gums completely stopped bleeding. And as I said in my last review my wife now enjoys kissing me!! What a benefit. Actually it was her who got me to go in. Today I had my annual physical. I told the doctor that my gums use to bleed and I went to the dental office my wife goes to and they treated me and now my gums do not bleed. He told me he now asks his patients if they have bleeding gums when he does a physical exam becasue the said there has been show to be a link between long term gum infections and many diseases and problems like heart attacks and strokes and diabetic problems. I don't have any of those problems and I don't want to get any of them. They told me that at the dental office, but its also nice to hear it from your own medical doctor. So again I thank everyone at the office for helping me live a healthy life.
THE FOLLOWING IS JUST WHAT I WROTE IN MY FIRST REVIEW My gums bled alittle when I brushed my teeth and my wife told me my breath was alittle "sour". She goes to this office. She recommended I go in for a check up. The office staff were nice and I filled out my forms online so that helped. There was a great view of the Lake. I only see another office building out my office
windows. The doctor introduced himself, Dr James. He sees my wife too. He examined my mouth, no decay but I he said I have a gum infection. He had his assistant the hygienist come in, she poked around my gums and they prepared a treatment plan. "OK" I said let's get started. My wife won't kiss me until my breath gets better. It took about three appointments and acouple of weeks, but my wife doesn't hesitate to kiss me now. My HMO insurance didn't cover 100% of the procedures, I guess that is why they call it a HMO, you pay for what you get as they say. I do not hesitate, nor does my wife hesitate to refer friends and family to their office.

They identified problems that I could even see, once they were made odvious to me, that my previous dentist overlooked. They solved my bleeding gum problem with the proper treatments unlike my pervious dentist who just polished my teeth with tooth paste, scraped them alittle and told me to floss more.
I liked having their specialists in the same office.
Dr, James identified my problem of clenching which was giving me headaches, but I did not connect the two, and he made me a special dental applicance, not the type I bought for myself at the drug store that didn't work and I wasted my money on, that I now wear at night and my headaches I suffered from for years went away. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I cracked a back tooth and they put a crown on it. That went well. Thank you again. Everything they did ended up being done well, looking good and working nicely. So I highly recommened the office to anyone seeking sophisticated dental treatments who wants good care.

Wow! I was impressed from my first visit to the day I walked out with my "Perfect" smile. Making an appointment was easy and the staff at the front desk was super friendly. When I got to the office, the receptionists were friendly and efficient. I didn't wait long to see the dentist, Dr. James. I was referred to him by my parents and some friends of theirs. He was friendly, professional and and most importantly he earned my trust by being straight forward, honest in his comments, and ethical. Dr. James performed excellent dental work on me. I needed two crowns on two of my front teeth. These teeth were short and stubby from birth and I have always wanted to get them to look normal. Working with the in house orthodontist they moved the two teeth into the center of the space and then Dr. James covered them over with two all porcelain beautiful crowns. I am very upset at my HMO insurance which listed crowns as a covered expense on the pamphlet I got from work, but in the fine print in the pamphlets the dentists get, states they don't cover crowns needed for any reason other than decay. But I was told about this limitation up front on a treatment plan the assistants presented to me before we started the work. It all worked out beautifully!! I look great! Thank you Dr. James!! You have changed my life. And for that I will be referring my fiends and family to you for ever.

Totally agree with every other review about this place. Pressure you into getting very expensive services not covered by insurance. Won't even do a simple teeth cleaning.

I normally wouldn't write a bad review on a place, but my experience here was awful, to say the least. For it being around for "over 100 years" and for the price, you would expect service to match, but they definitely don't deliver the goods. Not only did it cost me about $500 more than expected to get a tooth pulled over 10 weeks ago, I am still in pain and just recently realized that a piece of my jaw bone is sticking out! In the "instructions" they gave me it mentioned that after three days of getting the tooth pulled, the pain should fade away, and they gave me something equivalent to one 500mg Aleve (I take stronger medication for a headache) and sent me home. The pain did NOT go away, and an awful taste coming out of the hole sent me back and I ended up having Dry Socket (to which they mentioned, but did nothing about. I did my own home remedy to fight the pain until finally my gum started to heal over) and a cracked jaw (which CAN happen when getting a tooth pulled, but in addition to everything else it just seemed like the icing on the preverbial cake). Then they "required" a teeth cleaning to "fight infection" which ended up being $100 worth of teeth brushing and flossing I could have done at home! It took her ten minutes and I did not have that "just left the dentist" clean feeling that you'd expect! Needless to say it was an all around bad experience and would not recommend my worst enemy to go there.

This place tries to sell you services that you don't necessarily need. Always get a second opinion if something sounds pricey. Also, it takes several months to get an appointment. There are better places in the loop.

I concur with the other user. My husband went to them for a crown and they ended up billing us over $1,600 total, even after insurance. When my husband called to try and figure out why it was so radically more than the estimate they gave him in the beginning, the billing person chewed him out and tried to badger him into paying the bill or it would be turned over to collections. He didn't, and I called our insurance company, only to find out that they were indeed overcharging us by at least $1,000 after the co-pays. When I called the office and spoke to someone in billing, I called them on what they were doing, and told them exactly what the insurance company said. All of the sudden, they "realized" that they were billing incorrectly, and promised to have the office manager refund us the difference. Still waiting on that - I was told that we would be sent the $600 we were owed "when she got a chance" Gee, thanks. By the way, my husband's tooth still hurts, but he sure as heck isn't going back there again to get it fixed. FYI - If you look these guys up under the BB Bureau you'll find that they have had 8 complaints against them in 36 months and the bureau advises not doing business with them. Wish we had looked them up before.

Do not use this dentist! They tack on expensive "elective" procedures that are not covered by insurance to your bill. They use high pressure sales tactics to force you to to run up huge bills. Their billing dept is inept and do not understand how to process insurance claims.
