I've only been here twice. The second time however was a less than a pleasant experience. The food was terrible. The steak was like rubber. It took the bartender 3 times to get a french martini right and after that it was still horrible which prompted me to get stale wine. Skip the hype.

Best Puerto rican - American restaurant style of food that just makes you mouth water. Large portions, very filling. At a reasonable price. I recommend anyone who loves Spanish food to eat there.

My party met in the cozy front of the restaurant near the bar where we had a few drinks and some yuca fries that were amazingly light in grease and heavy in taste. We moved to the dining area where we agreed upon a wine-paired tasting menu that included (alas, I did not partake of the wines?but I was told they were excellent and well matched):

Key West Shrimp and Sweet Plantain Pionono with Sofrito Sauce ? a twist on a dish that I am told normally has ground beef ? nonetheless the shrimp and plaintain were a great pair;
Farmer Greens, Heirloom Tomato Salad with Creamy Cilantro Dressing - light, fresh and crisp;
Peekytoe Crabmeat and Avocado Terrine with Key Lime Mayonnaise and Ara?itas ? the mayo was light and finished nicely with the lime;
Chilean Sea Bass, Corn Broth and Fingerling Potato Croquette Domestic Lamb Chops with Boniato Mash, Grilled Asparagus and Veal Demi ? I believe we were told the chops were from the Hudson valley region; they were succulent and perfectly done;
Slow Braised Boneless Wagyu Beef Short Ribs with Funche and Island Mojito ? I have to resort to cliche and say the beef melted in my mouth.

Flan, Coconut Tembleque, Oozy Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Sorbet and Dulce de Leche Foam, and Warm Coconut Rice Pudding Tamal with Cajeta Sauce ? all too delicious to describe, with dessert wine.
The waitstaiff were experienced, attentive and unobtrusive. The waitress servimg the wine was knowledgeable and explained each pairing, then waited for our reactions, opinions and questions. The chef also came out to narrate each dish with story from her youth in Puerto Rico (?this is how my grandmother taught me to make this?? or ?this is how my Sicilian neighbors made this dish??).
I had no prior experience to this kind of food before. I did not have the expectations that the two reviwers below had, and therefore I may not have been prevented from enjoying myself.
I heartily recommend this place.

I celebrated a birthday at Lucy. The food was incredible - every bite had the entire table crooning with delight. Chef Carmen is a true master of the palate. All of the staff went out of their way to ensure the evening was perfect, and it was, with course after course expertly paired with a list of wines that perfectly complemented (skillfully selected by the sommelier) A few who had said they "had to make it an early night" changed their minds and stayed until the last morsel was gone (many hours later) and then we were all still talking about how wonderful the evening was many days later.

It will be hard to top this for many birthdays to come.

Went to Lucy of Gramercy with some girlfriends and loved it. The small plates are tasty...along with the short-ribs, the pork chop, and everything else. There's lots of flavors going on and there are plenty of dishes I've never tasted before in latin cuisine--probably because it's Puerto Rican cuisine and the chef makes many dishes from her upbringing. The service was great, good ambience, and to top things off, we had the best flan I've ever tasted along with some coquito to drink. Good stuff!

I feel bad writing this, but this was one of the WORST meals I have ever had in my years living here in New York City. My friends and I used to LOVE the old Lucy...good food and atmosphere. However, when we went the place was empty (first warning sign) and the service was HORRIBLE. The appetizers were bland, fried and tasteless...we could barely eat them! It took forever for them to arrive. The main courses had to be sent back (and we NEVER do that!) My friend has lobster that tasted like it was from a can, my short ribs were pure fat and were cold, and my friend had steak burned to a crisp. It was a nightmare, and really expensive on top of it. PLEASE do not go!!!!

I came here on a recommendation with a few friends and was apprehensive, but was amazed by everything from the decor (wide open and modern appeal) to the drinks and food. We had the sommelier match fine wines and drinks to different meals and were just blown away by everything. The best part was that on a Saturday night, when we couldn't get reservations to other upscale restaurants, there was no wait at Lucy and it was relatively quiet. I plan to go back soon. Great place.

I lived and stood by the once called Lucy's latin kitchen. the decor was once warm, full of color and the staff as well. I told almost everyone I met about how much I loved lucys and they should go there to eat.
NOW.. I finally took a friend after all the hype after not going in quite sometime, and it was horrific. the decor now looks like a country house. The staff look looks like they belong in a french cafe. The menu completely changed. the drinks which to me were the best drinks in new york are now not at all good.
I will still maintain my loyalty to this resturant in hopes they pay attention and figure that their loyal base is unsatisfied.
and on top of that LUCY OF GRAMERCY??? are you kidding. it's obviuos they are getting advice from someone who either is not latin or someone who lacks ethic pride. I'm not even latin, and I am disgusted with the changes that are purposely driifting from the latin base which once made it so very special.
change the CHEF!!! and dump the advisor.

UPDATE - Ironic that this place got three five-star reviews after a couple of negative ones...

Over the past few years, I dined at this spot with both friends and coworkers as it was a restaurant that I could depend on for great drinks, food, service and atmosphere.

Tonight, I went here with several friends to find that the restaurant had changed form LUCY LATIN KITCHEN to LUCYS OF GRAMERCY. We were informed that it was the same owner(s) with a new chef and new menu. The service here was horrendous and probably the worst I have seen in my 8+ years in New York. There were significant delays in the time we would see our waiter (i.e. 25 min b/t order and receipt of wine). We were only able to order food another 30 minutes after that and only after we asked the Manager to take our order, which was after asking two different busboys to have our waiter come by. Finally, when we got the bill, they charged us for all items, not even extending the gesture of a free app or wine despite acknowledging the awful service themselves. We were not looking for a handout but it is standard at any restaurant for concessions to be made when there are significant service issues.

Issues were not confined to our table. The place was about half full and I observed two waiters arguing with the bartender, the managers arguing with each other and the staff, other patrons getting up and leaving in frustration without ordering and the hostesses walking around lackadaisically while you try to get a table or check your coat.

My entree was good but the terrible service degraded the entire experience. It is also worth noting that the drink menu has been overhauled to include some blah drinks compared to the variety of mojitos and caprihinas that used to be served.

I cannot emphasize how disappointed I am because I liked Lucy Latin Kitchen so much. Others that did should keep it as a memory because you will NOT get the same experience in this new establishment.

Pros: entrees good (but pricey)

Cons: service, management, busboys, hostess (seriously...issues with each of them)

I usually don't write a review, but the service I had at Lucy's of Gramercy was so *horrible* that it has provided enough motivation. Let's start with the problems since they far outnumber the positive aspects of my dining experience. First, they botched up the reservation. We called a week ahead of time, and within that time frame, they lost our reservation. Fortunately, we were able to be seated (there was no one else there at the time). Second, the waiter had to take our order *THREE* times. Seriously! And there were no other tables! How can you forget an order three times if you don't have to wait on anyone else? Fourth, with the three times to take an order, he still messed up the order! One of my friends didn't receive the dish that she had ordered, and we had to wait even longer for our meal. And five, as if the whole ordeal wasn't enough, they charged us twice the amount for our meal! We've called the restaurant about five times now, and we've been passed along to different people, each one unable to resolve our problem. And **it's still unresolved**! (We're almost up to our 5th week in trying to resolve this problem.) If you're up for a night of pain and frustration, then I would probably go to Lucy's of Gramercy. However, I would save myself the money and time and just drop hammers on my feet all night. It's just not worth the frustration.

To be absolutely fair, the food was decent, and if the service was up to par for a normal restaurant (taking the correct order one time, delivering the correct food, and charging the right amount of money), I would give it a higher rating (of course). The chefs give the food a creative touch on traditional Puerto Rican classics.

My wife and I were regulars at her restaurant in Coral Gables. Every other month on our way to the Caribbean we would overnight in Miami just to eat there.
We loved her restaurant, there was a perfect balance of everything, the food an outstanding service, great music, outstanding wine list, simply everything.

As if it was possible her food at Lucy of Gramercy has reached a higher level . The boldness of her flavors and the balance of all the ingredients on each dish are precise and truly amazing. We love Puerto Rico and its food but not even there can you find food like this.

The only thing missing is her visit to the tables, hope to see you next time and.....

Welcome to New York!

I never spend time writing reviews but this place is not to be kept to yourself! Went the other night with a few friends and had a great time. The cocktail list is where to start your evening off, they have a few of their own special cocktails that are delicious! My friends and I ordered one of each since they all sounded so good! My favorites are the cactus pear and cava drink and the chocolate jalepeno martini (spicy and savory with a hint of chocolate! yumm!) The manchego cheese ball are to die for! The yuca fries are amazing and there are these fried plaintain things that are delicious..all of these are served in a martini glass so cute and easy to have on the table when sharing with friends! The side of garlic spiniach is delicious, cooked perfectly with the right amount of garlic! Key west shrimp is great and the crab avocado salad is yummmy! Entrees are all great! Duck, striped bass and lamb are yummy and there was a side of a plantain mash that came with one of the dishes that was amazing! Dessert isn't a strong point but the mango bread pudding was good, and a typical molten cake was predictable. Cheese plate was good with a decent selection. Wine guy was great and helped us choose bottles that went with what we had to eat and what we would all like. Overall a great experience, service can be a bit flakey but always smiling and nice. Will tell all my friends and will definitly be back again!!!

I just had dinner with a friend at Lucy and I was extremely pleased. The service was exceptional and not slow at all like the other two reviewers stated. If anything the servers were overly attentive. We got our food in a decent amount of time and did not wait long at all. The food was great and so were the drinks. In my book this restaurant gets an A in my book.

Recently checked this place out for a friend's birthday. There were 8 of us, and were promptly seated at a spacious table. The food was pretty good, but the service was so slow. Even ordering a beer took like 30 minutes! There seemed to be enough servers/helpers, but as the previous reviewer stated, they were disorganized.

Under new management, the food could flourish. Good food, great location, slow as hell service. Dinner took 3 hours!

Amaturish, sadly and badly run the timing in the kitchen must be chaotic.
long waits between courses two people order the same thing at the same table
can get delivery five minutes apart...and the food is uneven,it's a pretty room
but the incompetent management is glaring, the place sorely needs
a Chef but not just someone who can concoct recipes, someone who can
organize a kitchen.drinks come with agonizing delays this can only be a result
of poor preparation and haphazard setup, getting fed is a choir, nothing seems to go right

I've been there three times hoping against hope for an improvement mostly because
i like the decor and it is covenient.
i spent twenty years working in the restaurant business and seldom saw a poorer run
operation the best thing that i can say about this place is that there are plenty of restaurants within two blocks.

Great atmosphere; roomy. It was nice to dine at a large table where other diners aren't in your lap. However, the only vegetarian options I saw other than salad were the cheese empanadas (bland and very greasy) and rice and beans (super bland). I dont remember seeing any fish options. Service was good and prompt.

I recently had lunch at Lucy's and was not impressed at all. The guacomole was mediocre at best and our entrees were not good. I had the pollo and found it to be relatively dry and boring. My colleague ordered fish which wasn't very inspiring. My other colleague had the lamb and although I didn't taste it, it looked very bland. I don't think this restaurant really knows what its doing - the menu is a montage of Mexican, Latin, and Indian (yes, INDIAN) food. Make up your minds!!!

Will never return.

because no intelligent person would spend their own money on such a lame experience. The entrees were passable but our $10 empanada "appetizer" was uncooked in the middle and looked suspiciously like a hot pocket.

I'll never go back this restaurant on my own dime or the company's because the experience was so unpleasant. Keeping a sense of humor helped but the word 'reluctant' comes to mind when I think back on the service.

Small touches associated with fine dining establishments, such as folding a napkin when a patron visits the rest room, only seemed comical against a backdrop of disorganized incompetence.

At one point a frightened-looking man in a black polyester shirt approached the table with a basket of bread but then quickly retreated when another server reminded him serving utensils come before carbohydrates. We sat staring for several at a small dish of butter he dropped off before someone else returned with tiny plates and butter knives and a third person brought a small assortment of bread

My conclusion is to avoid this establishment at all costs.

i usually go during restuarant week to lucy's. i love their bread, i hate that someone goes around and gives you just one piece and u don't get a basket, but it's good bread. the staff is very informative, and it feels too formal at times there, but the food is very good. the drinks are good but a bit pricey. it's dark, the music is loud but the food is great.

The problem w/ Lucy is that while I will pay a ridiculous $14 for a single empanada if the rest of the experience is wonderful, I can't justify that if I've had to sit for 30 minutes w/o drinks, and then the waiter forgets my appetizer and then tells me I didn't order it.

my bottom line: the service basically ruined the meal. It was a Tuseday night, busy but not crazy, and from the moment we sat down it was obvious that our waiter was not going to do more than the bare minimum. Example: I ordered ceviche and the other four people ordered salads. After a year, the salads came, but no ceviche. As he never checked back w/ us, he didn't know mine hadn't arrived until everyone was done. I ordered a bottle of Cava, and it took seriously 20 minutes at least for him to bring it. I asked if they had Rutini Malbec and he said yes. But it's not Rutini....

The saving grace was the wine steward, who was fantastic and knew his wine and even pulled an unlisted wine out of the basement for us.

I just moved back from living in Spain, and before that lived in Argentina, so I have to say that while the food was good (not great) the prices are laughably high for the food you get. And it's Americanized too much, IMHO.

Anyway, sit at the bar and have a mojito or a glass of harder-to-find wine, maybe an appetizer (if they remember to serve you)

Pros: strong wine list

Cons: the worst waiter I've had in a year

Celebrated a friend's b-day here on a Sat night. Our entree orders were taken 15 minutes after we had finished our appetizers and we had our menus sitting on our laps the whole time. The bill came almost half an hour after our first request for it. The manager did not apologize nor offered anything to compensate for our wait, even though we had a huge party and an astronomical bill to pay. A total of 4 hours were spent at this overrated restaurant due to all the wait time. Manager is inexperienced when it came to customer service.

Came here last night with a friend and the food was amazing. The mojitos and sangria are very well made, and very strong. The food is filling and cooked to perfection. I didnt' come on a busy night, but I can see how it can get really busy, so I would recommend making reservations.

Great seafood, not just latin. They even have sushi and sashimi-inspired dishes. The warm bread selection is one of the best things about this restaurant.

My friends and I tried their extended restaurant week menu and it was so delicious. The croquette and empanada appetizers are very yummy (portions are a bit small but this is good because you will be stuffed by the end of dinner) and we all tried the grilled skirt steak for our main entree. The steak was absolutely delicious! It was a little spicy but I liked the kick in the taste. Our red sangria was very good as well. Our waiter was very attentive although sometimes, I thought the service was a little slow but we didn't mind too much since we were enjoying our food and conversation. It gets very crowded and noisy but not so much that you can't hear your party.

This place has all the ingredients, but some how the meal just didn't turn out right. It has a great atmosphere, fun music, excellent bar staff (great mojitos!), then I got to the table. The service was horrible and the food so-so. For example, I had roast pork with rice/beans and plantains. The side dishes were good, but the pork was so dry I needed a full glass of water to choke it down. I think I might give this place another try, but I would be cautious.

Went on a Friday night for some dinner with friends. They have the BEST sangria and Mojitos I have had in a long time!!! The decor was modern, chic with good dim lighting. If dining, ask to sit in the main dining area as the bar stool area looks uncomfortable while the main dining area is outfitted with plush sofa chairs. Waiters are on point. The food is excellent. The octopus salad is amazing and the shrimp empanadas are good but, a bit on the small side. The pork entree isn't really that good but, the churrasco and the duck is to die for. Overall, an excellent dining experience that I highly recommend.

I adore this restaurant! Food is excellent. I highly recommend the duck. Service is impeccable. I love the colombian bread they serve in the beginning. It's warm, dense, and yummy. The music is kickin' and the ambience and decor is trendy but comfy (just like the food). I've also had the mojito samplers on a sunday night and you get a lot of liquor for your buck. Lucy Latin Kitchen has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants.

Even the most well developed palate will be pleased! We just wandered in here when our Union Square Cafe reservation "got lost"...what a blessing b/c this spot is a true keeper. The service and food are top notch...we had a lamb shank and filet that were cooked to the most perfect temperatue. They treated us with such grace....I would return here weekly!

I have been to Lucy for years dining for dinner, lunch and dropping in for drinks by the lounge. On each occasion I bring friends and family from out of town and country. The service is consistently oustanding and the food is absolutely mouth melting and fresh. I have never been disappointed with the atmosphere, food and the service. The manager is one of the best in the industry, and the chef - one of a kind in Latin cuisine.

On a cold sunday evening me and my friends were looking to liven up the night with a few cocktails and some live music. We got more than we bargained for when we stumbled across Lucy, lured in by the sounds of cuban drums and the bright array of colors bursting from inside. The laid back yet lively ambience was a perfect setting to one of the most pleasant evenings I have had in a while. We started with the empanada tasting, which being an Argentinean native, I'm always quite critical of, however I was pleasantly surprised how delicious they tasted, memories of home overcame my dining experience. (An insider's tip- if you say you are an ex patria customer, the delightful manager might just give you the dessert on the house!) After we'd filled our stomachs, we danced the night away to the live cuban band.

We waited for about 20 minutes before anyone came to our table to give menus - then another 15 before we got water. Finally our waiter came and said "Do you know what your going to eat?" We asked about specials, and after he told us ordered and asked for a wine list. The manager seemed to notice that our waiter was not very attentive and came and took our wine order. Dont bother ordering the empanada sampler - it is 5 bite size portions for $15. Then our food came at about the same time. So we waited forever and then were bombarded with food. The cuban pork was cold and dry and tasteless. We had to track down the manager to get our check and scramble out. Overall a bad and expensive food experience.

Although I really didn't want to leave the lounge area (which was full of fun and laughter), my table was well attended to by a delightful waitress and each plate was better than the one before. Being South American myself, Lucy has a fantastic sample of what our cuisine has to offer. The surroundings are picturesque and the drinks are amazing. I had a thoroughly relaxing experience, perfect after a hectic day. (The pan de bono is a must!)

Lucy's was *memorable* but not for the right reasons. We went on a Saturday with a group of 10 and despite our 9pm reservation, were not seated until 10:30pm. The service was so slow that we didn't finish until 1:00am, by which time they turned the lights on. It was my bday and we had a pregnant woman in the group but little effort was made. The hostess leaked that they had sat a large group in front of us at 8pm, which clearly left insufficient time. The food was overpriced for the quality (I know, my boyfriend is Ecuadorian). The guacamole was the highpoint of the meal. I had the Lucy's Lobster Paella - the flavor was lacking and the seafood overcooked. If you want great ambience and have the patience, go for drinks (the Ginger margarita was excellent). Have dinner at your own risk!

We've been here about 5-6 times now. The food, service and ambience have always been impeccable. The waitstaff are consistently friendly and make you feel very welcome.

The serves are very large, so I'd recommend sharing dishes with a group of 4-6 people. My favorites are the lobster paella, roast pork and whole fish. The appetizers are also wonderful, especially the scallops.

Overall, a festive atmosphere in a great neighorhood.

I went on a Monday night with my lady. I was waiting for her at the bar and had a drink before she arrived. The bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable, and the bar area was very laid back and comfortable. I had the sangria, which was more dry than sweet, which was refreshing. After being seated, we were greeted by a very helpful waiter, who was able to help us decide on our dishes. Empanadas were fantastic, but slightly overpriced ($13 for one). Good experience overall. Worth it for the ambiance alone. I would return.

First, the music was SO loud that I got a sore throat trying to have a conversation with my party. The Hamichi ceviche was horrible!!! Not only was the fish not fresh, but the spices/sauces they used to try to cover up the taste/smell were horrible. The whole snapper was a waste of calories - again the fish was very fishy and the coconut rice was mushy and over cooked. And the shrimp tacos you ask...shrimp cooked to a rubbery perfection, cheap iceberg lettuce and completely uncreative salsas to top it all off! All of this served with a side of the typical B&T, untucked button down crowd.

I'm a latin food lover... and I always passed by Lucy's and never walked in. I went today and was blown away by the quality of their food and their ambience. The place is full of flavor and color and the music just puts you in the mood for food and drinks.

Try the empanadas, they are amazing, so is the Skirt steak. Definitely one of my FAVORITE latin places in town

Try them NOW!

This is the most amazing place, especially if you like Latin food. My fiance and I are getting married and we were originally trying to have the reception at Pipa (Lucy's sister restaurant); that was where we had our first date. The Restaurant Manager suggested we try Lucy as possible alternative. When we walked in, we fell in love. The atmosphere is warm, romantic, classy, and beautiful. Everyone was friendly and attentive. I took my future inlaws to do a tasting and we were served samples of most of the dishes on the menu. EVERYTHING was delicious. The ethnic flavors explode in your mouth and were also presented so elegantly. Every dish they served, one after the other was as delicious as the next. We had a difficult time choosing our wedding reception menu. It's a shame that my guests will not be able to experience Lucy as we did.

Allow me to start by saying that I love Latin American culture! This place: the ambience, the food and even the wonderful staff reminded me of my travels to the many Latin American countries I've visited. The setting is just right, from the pictures on the wall to the slated ceiling, it has the spirit of Latin America. The staff, very well chosen, has the warmth of its people. And now to my favorite part: the food! Every bite I took felt like home, I loved every minute of it (I've probably tried everything on their menu and have not been disappointed once). I'm very picky about my latin places and Lucy has definitely won me over!

Eat clubbers said "beautifully presented food. Looks so nice on the plate you don't want to eat it." "Nice decor" "Good live music... though a bit loud." As to food quality "The duck was fork cuttable, if slightly bland." Best dish: Peruvian Chiape de Mariscos. Best appetizer "Columbian cheeserolls." or "Columbian shrimp & sausage" --Eat club is an informal group of NYC eaters. We meet once a month.

Lucy has been on my list for a long time, but it took a hard day at work and a need for decent cocktails & food to inspire my boyfriend and I to go...
A fantastic waitress appeared as soon as we sat, and, after plying her with questions, she recommended the plates she deemed best for our first experience and appetite level. She hit that nail on the head!
While slowly taking in our delicious mojitos (go Mango!), we then dined on columbian cheese bread (courtesy of Lucy), a manchego cheese empanada, and yellowtail ceviche. Our entrees -- a seafood stew, and churrasco (steak), were impeccable. My only recommendation about Lucy -- don't overdue it on the appetizers & cheese bread... they are definitely irresistable, but filling! Also, be prepared: Lucy is not cheap, but it is worth every penny (especially after a hard day at the office.)

My girlfriend and I dined here last night and absolutely loved it. First of all, the service was awesome - our waitress took the time to make reccomendations, ask us about our tastes - and even dissuaded us from a couple of dishes. At no point was she hurried or annoyed, like the service at all those cramped East Village haunts. Even the bread and butter was spectacular. Hamachi ceviche: delicious. Seafood stew: amazing. Steak: most tender meat we've had in a long time. Best mojito I've ever had - and I've had my share...can't wait to go back!

First time I went to Lucy, my boyfriend took me for a romantic dinner on a weekday. It was perfect! We could hold a conversation without having to shout, the service was extra attentive, and the food was out of this world! I thought they were very creative and never compromised the flavors in doing so, the presentation was impeccable, and the wine list was outstanding... I went back on a weekend with a group of friends, and once again, everything was above and beyond my expectations. I even had the Sangria, which I don't normally drink but was pursued to because of an article I read in the Voice about Lucy's sangria and loved it! I've even made it my Sunday spot (they have the most incredible band in the city playing great Latin music)... I wonder if they have some sort of membership I could apply for...
