16 friends and i went to this place, big mistake!!
They all paid to get into this place smooth sailing
as soon as i approached the door, "let me see the bottom of your shoes," You can't come in with those shoes on" why not?? they are too casual! too casual they are leather shoes, not sneakers! wheres the manager?? she's right here, as he points to a lady standing outside, um no she isn't the manager, then just as i turn around one of the employees enters the same door with similar shoes on!! So eventually some guy comes out to talk to me, well sorry, we had to turn others away also, well guess what you are about to turn 16 away tonight!! this guys shoes were beat up and dirty, he shouldnt be allowed to work there in my opinion!
Now i can understand if it were a black tie affair, or a corporate event, but this was a Saturday night!!

now with my attire i would be able to get into any other club. but they were predjudice this night for some reason,
I had on a very nice suit, but it just so happens that you can't where shoes with rubber on the bottom!! last i checked all shoes have rubber on the bottom.
all of my friends came out, and received a refund within 2 minutes of the shoe issue.
We went to a different club.
first impressions are lasting, and i will never go to this club again!!
lets do the math 16 times $10.00 i=$160.00
drinks i estimate 16 times $30.00 =$480.00
so lets see, thats $640.00 over shoes that happen to have rubber soles.

i give them a negative 10 stars
Please don't waste your time or energy here there are more places that will appreciate your business!!

Cons: Shoe policy too strict, management is very uptight snobby

Dragonfly is amazing on Friday nights! They call the night fetish friday's and the place gets packed! I've been other nights of the week and it's been pretty calm, but there's something about a tyku drink special that packs bars! If you're looking for a good friday night this is the place to be.

Mixed feelings about this place. Absolutely beautiful decor, however the waitstaff was terrible. The food was very good, and because we were there on a slow night, it arrived quickly. The overall experience was only ok.

we had reservations at 830 and were told we would have to wait only 10 minutes for our table upon arrival. after 45 minutes the hostess tried to put some tables together for us but the manger would not allow this. no one came to talk to us or offer a free drink while we waited, i guess we were suppose to just sit there and wait, so after nearly an hour we simply left, i have never experienced that before at a restaurant in chicago when i had a reservation.

I went to Dragonfly for dinner on Saturday. We had a reservation for 7 at 8pm. We had to wait about 15 minutes once we got there because it was a full house. The manager bought us our first round of drinks because it was my friend's birthday. That was one of the nicest gestures any restaurant has ever extended to us. Usually you only get a free dessert (which we also got at the end of the meal). The food was excellent. We ordered the Honey Walnut Prawns which was highly recommended from our server and it's one of the best dishes I have ever had. I will definitely go back just for that dish. The decor is gorgeous and the unmrellas on the wall was very unique. One con was that it was a bit noisy in the restaurant. Everyone was talking very loud. Next time I will try to go on a less busier night.

Pros: Honey Walnut Prawns, decor and manager bought us 7 drinks!

Cons: Noisy when a full restaurant

I went here recently on a friend's recommendation. It was a cold winter night so I had a stylish leather jacket on and wanted to keep it on. They wouldn't let me keep the coat. They said it was a rule that every coat had to be coat checked. I looked around and saw at least 3 other people with coats on. Then a girl had her coat on and they wouldn't let her go up. But after some discussion they let her pass. Then we I pointed this out they said I was being obnoxious, but could go upstairs if I wanted. Then I find out I was talking with one of owners. Absolutely horrible manners. This place is more concerned about making a dollar off of their coat check than if their customers are comfortable. I would have easily dropped over a $100 on drinks on this place. I won't ever go back to such a place with an attitude like this.

Cons: More interested in making money than customer service

.

I just thought the food was nasty. I ordered beef with broccoli which was gooey. It was like they had used corn syrup or something in the preparation. We ordered spring rolls as an appetizer and they were way too greasy. The soup I had was ok. I would never go back.

Pros: I really can't think of one...

Cons: Disgusting Food

.

This place is awesome! The food was delicious! My friend recommended it to me after her family went there for her parent's anniversary and couldn't agree with her more that the food was some of the best Chinese food I've ever eaten in Chicago. I'm from San Francisco so I'm used to authentic, grade A Chinese food. Dragonfly is a bit more americanized, but still very fresh and delicious. I would say, however, that parking is a bit hectic there with all the cars trying to get valet. But well worth the venture. We will definitely be back!

I went here with a few friends last summer and it was a great experience. A perfect place to take a date or just a place to hang out with friends. The staff was wonderful and the customer service was amazing. The bar tender Wendy was also extremely nice! I would highly recommend this place and I will definitely stop by next time I am in town.

Soft shell crab not crispy and hot but like fish that had been cooked in old batter. Satay were OK but peanut sauce creamy. Fiery curry hot rice with chicken ugly mess of a lot of rice , cheap curry powder and no real heat. Fillet of snapper an insipid vague fish flavour. Fish was staemed but still watery in a salty cheap sauce. Bathroom no soap and no atmosphere. Won't survive the recession and ought not to. Sauvingnon by the bottle aws cheap, no lemony grassy tones. OH why go on...dreadful

A group of us ordered lunch from Dragonfly on a Tuesday afternoon. We were sorely disappointed, both with the food and the price. They should pay people to eat the food. Fiery chicken was slimy, had no taste or "fire", and left a disgusting after taste in our mouths. We thought we would be safe with Orange Chicken as that is breaded and fried. We were wrong. I have never had chicken so dry. It tasted like dried soup chicken, if it really is chicken. How breaded and fried food is dry on the inside is a mystery I don't want solved. Tasteless brown or what they call fried rice was just terrible. Hard, chewy, and no good flavor to mention. Eggrolls had so much pepper and garlic we wondered what we had ordered. We hope nobody wastes their time or money on this place. The service was fine, the food (the most important part) was TERRIBLE.

Cons: Everything

I went last Friday and had great service from Barbara. The place is gorgeous and the umbrellas on the wall are very cool. The live jazz was a nice touch and the $20 per person family combo is a great deal. We ate so much and will definitely be back.

Pros: Service, Ambiance, Price

Cons: Parking is hard

.

Drinks were about as watered down as any I have ever had. If you are charging $8 for a drink you need to put a reasonable amount of alcohol in it. Nickle and diming on this low cost item is just plain dumb. You can make customers very happy with a stiff drink. Food was very average. Ambiance was nice but music a bit loud. Hostess was somewhat curt and condescending. I wouldn't go here again.

I agree with the reviewer who wrote that the ambience is probably the best thing about Dragonfly. The food is good but not great (actually my last meal there was on the salty side) but the place itself is beautiful. Drinks were pretty good as well.

Cons: Sometimes out of certain dishes

In our quest to try something new we stopped by one beautiful evening. We were seated prompty in the outdoor seating area. Though the hostess seemed annoyed that we waited at the hostess stand outside at the entrance of the sidewalk seating rather than the hostess stand inside, why put a hostess stand outside if you want customers to come inside for direction?

Then 15 minutes later our overworked waiter came by for our drink order. There were only 5 other tables out there filled. The inside was empty. This poor waiter was scrambling to keep up. The waiter came back w/o the drinks (which we needed at this point) but took our appetizer order... we still had high hopes. He eventually came back with both the appetizers and drinks & apparently all the other tables food/drink orders.

We did notice that they had 2 hostesses wandering about with not much to do. & overlooking the annoying dragonfly emblazoned Mercede's were 2 managers chatting, using their cell phones loudly & doing anything they could but take care of the customers. Call us crazy but if your waiter is drowning because your either 1. didn't hire enough staff for the evening or 2. someone or someone's didn't show up you would either 1. delgate drink orders or something to the superfluous hostess. Or crazier yet, take on some of the duties yourself so your patron's aren't so annoyed that they leave after the appetizer to go elsewhere.

We were appalled at the horrible service (not the waiters fault) and apparent lack of attention to any detail. If they spent half as much time taking care of the customers as they did making sure their car was painted just right, they would have had our loyalty. Of course we might be in the minority in believeing that value for our money is important & lack of attention often translates to lack of attention in area's that negate all those apple's a day.

Pros: Close to downtown

Cons: Service, price

Athough it took awhile for server to bring our drinks, the martini was yummy. Dessert was super delicious. We were accomodated to sit outside in a timely manner. Would come back for the food. it smelled great in there!

Normally, I don?t rate any restaurants at all, but last night's experience at Dragonfly was exceptional. I know it was the fourth of July, and despite the chaos and them being busy, our dinner experience went by smoothly. I came in with five friends with no reservations, and asked for outside patio table if necessary, and in spite of being busy, we only waited a good 7 or ten minutes for them to locate, clear and set up a table for us outside. We were directed to sit by the bar as we waited, and the bartender asked us how we were doing and if she could start us off with a drink. (After being carded YAY :) and we had a good laugh about it!!!) A moment later, we were directed to our table followed by someone offering us water and then waitress came. She was able to answer our questions regarding certain dishes, and we opted on (as recommended) the Kooteigh (potstickers), and Crabby Cheese Crunch (crab rangoon) for appetizers and the Honey Walnut Prawns, Mongolian beef and the Fiery Chicken and Duck Fried Rice for our main entrees. We waited for our appetizers for about 5 or so minutes while sipping our drinks, Can I say the Lychee Martini is to die for?! Anyway, over all, we got the service we deserved. I must emphasize that they were busy last night, parties of people coming in and out, having drinks at the bar, I believe they had an event going on as well because there were free food and samplers. But despite it all, we were taken care of, or at least someone made sure that our water goblets were never empty, we were asked how our meal was, our entrees were hot and just DELICIOUS, and enough for 5 hungry people. It?s a really nice thing that people know their duties, and it showed because everything ran smoothly.

Cons: valet took a little longer to get car back, then again, they were busy

I feel sorry for the other guys who left reviews. Must have been an off night for Dragonfly. I was just there last week for a Birthday party and I have to say it was one of the best times we have ever had. The entire staff, from the hostess to the bussers, was extremley friendly and overall gave some of the best service we could have asked for. We even showed up with five more in our party and they were able to accomodate us very quickly. The food was excelent and worth every penny. The manager came over (who did look a little young, but was still very proffesional) to the table and greeted us all, and even gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne for the birthday. We ended up staying for their late night lounge which was a lot of fun too. It wasn't very stuffy like a night club and the music was really good. Deffineitly go and check this place out for yourself.

Came here yesterday cause I heard it was a good date place. I called ahead to make reservations and to let them know I had some special requests (as I really wanted to impress my date). When we got there we were giving the royal treatment I tell you. The food was excellent and the server even better. He really came through and made me look good. The atmosphere was just what I expected for a great romantic date spot. Please do yourself a favor and go check this place out. Especially if you're going on a date. The girl will love you (trust me).

I believe I ate here the same night as the reviewer above and that I saw them walk out. We asked the hostess if we were going to get better service than the table that had walked. She was stumped and then assured us we would. Yeah right. It was the WORST dining experience our party of 7 had EVER had anywhere. We arrived 15 minutes prior to our reservation and the place wasn't busy. They chose to seat us 45 MINUTES later. It took 15 to get the waitress to take a drink order. And another 10 to get the drinks. Then we waited an hour for our food (one appetizer materialized AFTER the diner arrived after being requested a couple times). A pitcher of soda never arrived. Tea took 2 requests. Everyone's food was cold. A couple tiny bowls of rice were served to the entire table. We finally asked for the manager (who by the way looks about 12 - and came across as very inexperienced). One of my friends plopped a cold piece of chicken in his hand to show him we were very unhappy. He wanted to buy us drinks and dessert (none of which we were interested in). We demanded half off the entire bill. He finally took it off. When we left I asked for the owner and the silly little hostess at the door tried to pass off the other hostess as the owner. We saw right through it and I will be returning to see the Owner, Sarah, and telling her what her employees are up to.

Pros: Great neighborhood other than this particular locale

Cons: SLOW, cold food, excuses, hostesses that lie, reservations mean nothing, forgetful staff

.

I wish I could be writing a review about the food...unfortunately we never got to try it! A group of 5 friends and I tried this place out on Saturday night (maybe we were the "large group of unhappy people" mentioned in the next review!). After 20 mins of waiting for someone to approach our table, then bugging two other servers to PLEASE get someone to take our drink order, we still got nothing. I finally spoke to a manager after another 20 minutes, who turned and spoke to an employee in another language, and then continued fixing the linens on an empty table...without a word to me!! Needless to say, that was the last straw...we got up and left. On the way out, as we mentioned our dissatisfaction to the hostess, the same manager walked up, and again made no attempt to apologize in any way. As an event planner in the West Loop, I set up large and small dinner parties constantly at the restaurants in the Warehouse District of Randolph Street. I would never send anyone to this establishment. Frankly, I have no idea how they still have such a high rating!

Frankly, I have no idea how they still have such a high rating!

.

I had made a reservation on the Thursday before we were going for a party of 7 to be seated at 8:30. I received a call on Friday confirming the reservation so they knew we were coming and to be expecting us. On Saturday night when we arrived, we checked in with the hostess at 8:15 and told them we were here. I was asked if I had a reservation because the couldn't find it but said they would seat us soon. 45 minutes later, a large group of unhappy people came walking downstairs and straight to the hostess stand to complain that they had been waiting 40 minutes for someone to come take their order. No one ever came to serve them so they were leaving. It must have been their table they gave us because our experience was going to be similar.

When we were seated, it took 30-45 minutes for the waitress to come to the table and take our appetizer/drink order. After we finally received those, our DINNER order was taken. 1 HOUR LATER, our food arrived. COLD! We had to keep asking for things 2-3x. Nothing hard and out of the ordinary.

We asked to speak to the manager, (who couldn't be a day over 18) he apologized and asked if we wanted our food heated up, free dessert, or drinks. At this point, we were all hungry and irritated with the poor service/food and just wanted to hurry up the hellish night and leave so NO, we didn't want dessert or drinks. The worst part is we were celebrating 3 birthdays and had 2 guest in from Germany. This was their last night in Chicago and was wondering if this is the norm, cold food and bad service.

When the check arrived, at least reflecting some form of a discount, so did the bus staff hurrying us up and clearing the table. Dance music started blaring. It was like pouring salt into an open wound. Could this get any worst. One the way out, another hostess posing as the owner speaks with us apologizing and making excuses.

I DON"T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE! Its nothing like the old location.

For those that have written a good review on this place,"Are you kidding?" Our reservation was for 8:30pm, we were seated after 9pm, after seeing another party of people storm out in disgust. Service does not exist here, one waitress serving upstairs and the downstairs area. Meaning, 45 minutes just to be asked for a drink. An hour to get your food, and when it arrives its stone cold. Our party was 7 people and all food was cold. We asked for the manager, "a 12 year old looking gentleman" and he said he would have our food heated up, We all thought... "OH HELL NO" We wanted out at this point. 10.45pm at this stage of the night. The manager offered us free desert, a round of drinks to diffuse the situation. "Very poor effort at best" We had him reduce the bill, which was done, thankfully! As paying full price for that experience would truly have been like pouring salt and lime on an open wound. We settled the check and headed out downstairs still ticked off at the disappointing birthday celebration that dragonfly had bestow upon us. we asked who the owner was, We got a young lady standing before us,(badly dressed) and what we can only assume was a hostess posing as the owner, telling us that our experience was not the normal, and how understaffed they were. But offering nothing in return to us, except excuses. Then we had to deal with the parking valet , that refused to let go of the door till he got a tip, "a tip after the poor dinner experience we just had are you kidding!" This was the most disappointing dinner experience ever, Nothing at all like the old location. Those that had dined there would also agree that the west loop local is a far cry from the old restaurant. Thank you dragonfly for a very bad birthday dinner, you could learn a few things from Big Bowl! We will never return, we wish you well in the future. You need all the help you can get.

This place is awesome! The food is always great and the service even better! I saw some of the bad reviews and I justed wanted to say, being in the service industry, no matter who you are your always going to have an off-night. What seperates the good from the bad is if your consistently off. As a repeat customer of this great Chinese restaurant let me just say to everyone this is not the case at D'Fly. As a family owned buiseness that is exactly how everyone is treated....Like Family.

I went to Dragonfly for the evening lounge/dancing scene so cannot really comment on food?but I CAN comment on everything else. I would have to say the place had POOR service and unprofessional staff. I took the chance to plan a big birthday bash at Dragonfly. I found out about their special "birthday packages" ahead of time and even talked to a manager. However, when I arrived that night, all the bartenders acted as if they had no idea what I was talking about. They said the specific manager I had talked to was not around and they had no list with my guest?s names. In addition, although I was told the upstairs would open up around 10pm or so, they actually only opened up around 11:30pm. Some advice: if you haven't tried this place out, DO NOT plan a birthday or big event here.

Had a reservation at 8, didn't get seated until 9, cold entrees came out before the appetizers! Need I say more? Very rude management. I don't understand how this restaurant can stay open.

Dragonfly offers great ambience and great food. The service is great and the staff very courteous. The food is not as great, but the presentation makes up for it. I have been to the place multiple times. If you use one of the "buy one entree get one free" coupons, this place can be a bargain. I used to get a lot of these coupons in the mail. Haven't seen them in a while but that won't stop me from visitng them again. They used to be in a nicer location in Gold coast. But for some reason they have moved to Randolph street.

PROS: great ambience
CONS: not so consistent food quality

I had dinner at Dragonfly last Saturday with a group of about 20 for my friend's birthday. Not only did we have a blast, but the food was outstanding. And coming from someone who is Chinese, I KNOW good chinese food! The Dreaming Roast Duck, Whole Steamed Yellow Tail Snapper and the Chow Fun are as authentic as anyone can get! The staff attended all our needs and even bought our group a bottle of Moet Champagne! That was really unexpected, but very appreciated! The only problem was that the place was very packed for dinner so it was kind of noisy and crowded, but other than that, the place is definately the place to be for dinner! I will be back again in 2 weeks for another birthday dinner...looking forward to it!

A group of us went to dinner here for a friend's birthday. First, when we got there, we mentioned we were there for the birthday party and the hostess didn't even acknowledge us. We eventually wandered around the restaurant until we found our seats. In addition, there were not enough seats set per our reservations. Our waiter was extremely rude and unattentive to our requests. We had to ask for water 3 times and finally got it from another waiter. The appetizers were probably the best part of the menu. Entrees tasted like they were from Panda Express but at a way higher cost. When the bill came, the waiter tried to convince us that we were short on the bill when he mis-counted. He didn't even apologize for his error. In the end, I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I was surprised to find that this restaurant was pretty empty despite the fact that other trendy eateries nearby were packed. The food was excellent and service was good(despite the fact hat our server couldn't open a bottle of wine). Food presentation was really upscale and they are large portions for reasonable prices. The atmosphere felt a little forced, but then that could be cause the house music was echoing off of empty walls. Not sure if I would return because the vibe felt a bit desparate, but would def order take out cause the food was really good.

this was the worst club I have ever been to. The music was not good and the people were stuckup and cliquey. No one danced so this is not a club you would like to go to if you want to dance or meet new people.

Cheesy music that is too loud, but the food is good. But the worst thing is the pour--an $8 rocks drink should be at least 1.5 ounces, Dragonfly manages to pour the lightest drink I have seen.

The food varies from dish to dish. The tofu appetizer was delicious. The duck entree was also tasty. The treasure of the sea entree was bland. The presentation is excellent for the price paid for the food. This restaurant is probably best known for its drinks and friendly staff and patrons.

In the genre of high end Chinese, Dragonfly is clearly above and beyond the competition. They take common favorites and turn them into wonderful gems. My favorites include Crispy Sesame Chicken and Beef Chow Fun. Their Chow Fun is the best in the city...no doubt. The noodles are perfectly fried: crispy on the outside, and soft and tender in the middle. I'm a regular for good reason.

I went with a date on a Friday night. The dining room was closed, however, we were able to have a nice meal in the bar area. Get there at around 8:45 for a nice dinner before the club crowd moves in. The waitress was very friendly and the ambience was very nice for a date.

The best chinese restaurant in town. In terms of food, service, and decor, this modern restaurant/ lounge hybrid can't be beat. The food is sophiscated yet subtle. The decor is dramatic but not cheesy. The service friendly but not snooty. The open air dining room puts it WAY over the top A must visit.

From the food to the service, this restaurant doesn't miss a beat. Each dish that I have tried has been good. I've eaten here 4 times, and each time I have been satisfied. The seafood here is extremely fresh. I recommend the Hot & Spicy Scallops and the Honey Walnut Prawns. If you want to splurge a bit, try the Steamed Red Snapper. Nicely sized and very fresh, and the ginger sauce was perfect. And for the hip and trendy, the atmoshpere and the mood of the place will make you feel like you fit right in.

This is funny to me. Some people seem to really love this place...on the other hand, some people seem to really hate this place. From my experience, I found this place to the best of the classy 'upscale' Asian restaurants in town. I suspect that the 'haters' here must have their own agenda. I worked in China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) for 6 years, and lived in Vancouver for 3 years before moving to Chicago. Dragonfly, without a doubt, has the best food in town.

What began as an enjoyable evening was marred both by the waitress and the arrival of the entres. I had ordered the lemon chicken and was dismayed when it arrived thoroughly raw!! When brought to the attention of the waitstaff and then the manager, the most offered was another entre of overcooked chicken and $5 off of the evenings bill. As for the waitress, had she actually spoken above 4 decibels, it would have been much easier for the entire party to hear the night's specials and place their respective orders. Our first indication that the whole night would have been sub par was the empty dining room on a Saturday night.

The food is spectacular! The service is super friendly and knowledgable. And the prices very reasonable. My family and I had a very positive experience when we dined here Christmas Eve. You must try the Dreaming Roast Duck. Yum Yum Yum! The Sesame Chicken was nowhere near the ones I've had before; the chicken was lightly fried perfectly and the sauce tantalizing and sweet. The Moo Shoo Pork was perhaps one of the best I've ever had, and the Happy Family simply delicious. Many complements to the first rate chef. I highly recommend Dragonfly Mandarin, and now I understand what all the rave was about.

After 10+ very positive visits, Dragonfly has become my favorite Chinese restaurant in the city. Can you compare it to Chinatown? Well, you get the authenticity of Chinatown, but with superb quality. Try ordering scallops (or any seafood dish) ANYWHERE in Chinatown, and compare it to Dragonfly's. HUGE DIFFERENCE. The seafood at Dragonfly is always fresh, and not chemically treated like the restaurants in Chinatown. Try any dish and compare. The vegetables are crisp, the meats fresh, the noodles perfect. The dishes are not overy saucy or oily. For a quick cheap fix, go to Chinatwon. For quality, stay downtown in Chicago at Dragonfly.
