La Magdalena in Elgin is to be avoided at all cost. My wife and I ate a very mundane meal there in 2009, enchiladas, tacos, they got her order totally wrong, and when the food arrived it was very tasteless and did not at all justify the high end prices on the menu. This place looks like a ??real restaurant?, like an Olive Garden for Mexican food, and I am sure that entices many diners. But then charge huge prices for very routine food??nothing special??and expect a patron to return? Never.

The worst part of the experience is the thievery of the owners and staff. We were celebrating and ordered a 45 ounce margarita off the printed menu. We got a 24 ounce margarita??not even close to 45 ounces! How do I know? We showed the waitress, and when she said that there is no mistake, that is a 45 ounce glass, we poured our 8 ounce water glasses into it??it held three, or 24 ounces! She got the bar manager, who immediately came over, agreed that it was a 45 ounce glass, and then we showed her the water, and she said, ??Well, to be honest, we know those are 32 ounce glasses.? Even if she is right (and she is not, they are the same glasses used in other Mexican restaurants as 24 ouncers), she admits they are overcharging by 35%! She offered no restitution, and when I stated that I wanted to pay for what we drank, she returned with a $5 bill, slapped it on the table and said, ??Don??t order that one again,? as she walked away. I will never eat at La Magdalena again??it is mediocre food served in a fancy atmosphere, sharing overinflated prices and ripping people off on the drinks. I am calling the liquor commission and the Elgin mayor??s office on fraud tomorrow. Avoid La Magdalena.
