Went there on a Tuesday night and was pleasantly surprised to catch the group Brasil Live with the most amazing Brazilian singers I've ever seen.\n\nThis Brazilian band is made up of the best pros in NY and they play all the cool Brazilian music hits by my favorite artists. Seu Jorge, Ivete, Sangalo, Tim Maia, Jorge Benjor... you name it, they have on their repertoire. The energy is so high up there, people can't help it but to stand up, dance and party all night. \n\nThe Village Underground is located right across the street from the Blue Note on West 3rd street so it's right in the middle of Village and super easy to get to. I was staying at the Hostelling International uptown Manhattan and it was a quick subway ride home. I highly recommend going there on a Tuesday night for an amazing night of Brazilian music fun.

I used to be a regular at the owners old place Cafe Wha, but I love this new place much better. The music is the same fantastic quality, but the place is nicer and more comfortable, it's not as expensive, and the drinks are way better. Also many of my old favorite Cafe Wha musicians like Mike Davis, Elan, and Cheryl Pepsi Riley come down to perform with the band. I've brought a ton of friends here, and we've never had a bad time.

I've been going to the VU pretty much every Friday night for the past year and a half and I never cease to have a good time whether I come alone or with friends. I dance, drink, eat and I adore the band and love the music the DJ plays during the band's breaks. Even on the nights I can't make it out, I still watch the show online. Anyone looking to have a good time should definitely consider coming here.

I have been living in NYC for bit now and I have to say I love to go out and explore the scene. \nI came across Village Underground by accident, now I go there all the time. The martinis are amazing and very fairly priced. THE SERVICE IS AMAZING, i've had different waiters and they were all nice, which is a rare thing in NYC. The DJ is awesome, I have been there for my birthday and a bunch of other times with friends and I keep going back. You can get a table without a reservation if you get there early I they don't make you by bottles. Which lets face it....at times it's a good thing. In the end you end up with a fair tab and NOTHING BUT A GREAT TIME!!! Highly recommended!

Have been going to this place for a while and I have to say I LOVE IT!!!! It just has everything I love. I have to say I love the fact that I can reserve a table. Gypse the party host is so easy to deal with. She isn't snooty like so many other places. I could go on and on...And really that fact that I don't have to buy a bottle to reserve is the best!! Can't wait to go back!!!

The name speaks for itself - following the stairs to a dimly lit space. It is a spot in the village that caters to an eclectic crowd - various forms of entertainers have performed there. I have seen Michelle N'degeocello, Mental Notes feat. Aminiqu, Ragan Whiteside (jazz) Melanie Daniels (gospel) among other entertainers and they all have brought different sounds and great energy to the environment. Seating may present a problem especially if it gets crowded as you may find yourself lost behind the columns so getting a good seat is paramount to enjoying the whole event.

Best night of my life!!!! Danced my a$$ off!! The DJ was pumpin!!!! We got a table reservation with no hassle at all and had it all night. The guys at the door didn't have that typical attitude you get from NYC bouncers. They have a great martini menu too. So much to choose from... oh i almost forgot the best part. They have an upstairs too so if you have those friends that don't like the club scene there is a room upstairs with comfy couches to just chill one and talk. so everyone is happy :)\r\n

In this smokey, dimly-lit, crowded, music-thumping atmosphere, beware of pickpocketers !!!! I lost about $400 worth in cash, metro card, and my cell phone, which were taken from my purse as I was dancing in the SUPER CROWDED dance floor. I've lived in city for over 5 years now, been to numerous crowded clubs, and this is the first time something like this has happened. The manager said they would take a look at their ""surveillance cameras"" to see if there was anything ""suspicious"" amidst the sea of dancers and all the smoke and colored lights. They had their security ""check"" the area with a flashlight for any of my missing items but surprise, surprise...turned up with nothing. The only other help or compensation I received from the manager was an ""I'm so sorry!"" and a ""you can call back tomorrow to see if anything turns up."" I definitely recommend going to a different venue if you are up for a night of dancing!! I certainly will not be going to the shady Village Underground again and will spread the word!!

I had my 25th birthday party here a couple months ago, and had a great time. I had actually commissioned my boyfriend with the task of making bottle service reservations in the city, but he waited too long and a week before the celebration, I still didn't have a venue settled. We ended up contacting Village Underground since I knew some friends who had had parties there before, and while there was some initial confusion re: bottle service list vs. guest list, we squared things away with Gypsee, the FBPC event planner, and things went off without a hitch. Gypsee seated my party as soon as we got there, our waitress took good care of us the entire evening, all of my friends got in without any issues, and the music was great for dancing (hip-hop/pop) the whole night. Predictably, bottle service was pricey, especially with the mandatory 20% gratuity, but that's par for the course in Manhattan. All in all, if you're willing to do bottle service and have ""good dancing atmosphere"" as a prereq for a party, I'd definitely recommend Village Underground.

I had my graduation party here a few months back and would not hesitate to choose this venue for my next party. Gypsee, the party planner was absolutely phenomenal. Their prices are par with other Manhattan venues (would be too good to be true otherwise) but I cannot stress the service enough. We had one waitress working with us the entire night and she seemed to read my mind. Every time a mixer was running low or whenever I looked up, she was at the ready. We requested certain tables since we took a tour before the event and it was ready for us as promised by the manager. We had 3 tables, a guestlist of 70 and bought 7 bottles. My no-cover guestlist was supposed to be over by midnight as instructed by the manager, but about 15 of my friends came in after midnight for free anyway! We ended up giving a 25% tip (eep!) as well as a separate tip for our waitress. The DJ was great, there was never a dull moment. I still get compliments about the party!

I celebrated my 23rd birthday here in December with around 25 people. It was fantastic. At 10pm-ish, no one was there by 11pm to 12am, the place was absolutely packed. The music was the best part - all current hip hop hits - very good DJ. My friends and I had reserved a table and we spent the night dancing on the sofas and dancefloor. Gypsy Lee is a fantastic host & party-organizer and made this party happen, seamlessly, even though I had reserved for a table less than a week in advance.

The location was great, the club like scene was cool, little tight but all in all it was PERFECT. We were invited to the after party at MSG but we perferred to be here instead. I give THE UNDERGROUND a 5 STARS and more (wink wink) luv you guys. We will be back real soon.

Village Underground is not what I thought it would be. I enjoyed the talent from the not-so-regulars and out of towners. Didn't like the regulars, especially the female host for that night I attended. They were a bunch of church folk gone secular and were very rude to the newbies. No musicianship at all. A couple from Japan came to perform and the guitar player was awesome and even sung in japanese. It was great but he wasn't appreciated. Also, there is so much talking through a performance that you can't focus on what's in front of you. There are lots more places in NYC that anyone willing to break out or just sing for the fun of it can go to. The negative vibe was extremely high. Won't go back. I give two out of five stars because the wings were awesome and our waitress was fabulous.

I came on a Thursday. I was so happy to see Jason, Elan, Vinny, Noam, and Ron ( and even Jesus sitting in) - all those guys I remembered from the Cafe Wha. I like the room a little better because there's more room for dancing, although I still love Brian and Byron. Great sound system but the Wha has better food!

I had my birthday party at Village Undergound which I arranged through Jennifer. She is a fantastic individual to deal with. The bouncer at the door was extremely nice and let me and my friends in without a problem. From the moment we arrived until we left (around 3:30am) the music was off the hook! My friends and I were dancing all night long! The drinks were good too-strong enough to get your money's worth! I would definitely recommend people having their party here. It's a good time with no hassles.

I'm kind of surprised that this is ranked as the top dance club in NYC. Don't get me wrong--there was minimal hassle/cover at the door, the ambience was good, and the music was great most of the time. However, it seemed to me that this was just what a basic clubbing experience should be. The Village Underground doesn't really go above and beyond in any way that makes it particularly special or awesome in any way. It's fun to go with a group of friends, but don't expect anything amazing. As long as you don't have over-elevated expectations, you'll be able to relax and have a good time.

But...someone should tell the guy who keeps writing the same message over and over in different words to stop because it's obvious that he works at this place or he REALLY loves it and wants others to think he is actually multiple people. The whole message, followed by a space, and then a final punctuating remark, i.e., ""fastastic, just fantastic"" or ""the ladies are hot, real hot"" is very poetic but a just a little too obvious.

I had my party on December 10th 2004 (I was the girl on top of the tables) and it was a blast. I had a 100+ people show up and it was the best time I had in a long time. All my guests loved the place and said it was the best party they have ever been to. The crowd is mixed (which I love) and the DJ played great music that got everyone grooving. Definately a hot night and will highly recommend anyone to go there to have a few hours of socializing and dancing

I go out all the time, to all different spots... lounges, restaurants, openings and clubs. What was so refreshing about this spot was that it was sexy, trendy, upscale, with barely any attitude. Music was great, no repeats of the same song throughout the nigh, you know how that is... Staff was very good. Decor trendy & comfortable and the vibe was - let's just say trendy New Yorkers with super high energy and fun.\n\nVery, very Refreshing-

It's a nice place to chill after work with friends. The only thing I hate about the place was the mandatory coat check line which took so long. It makes you not want to go inside. What kept me from leaving was the good music that was playing which lured me downstairs. All in all, the ambiance was nice and I would go back again, but in the spring and summer months.

WOW! I have been to Rumor several times now. I went this past Saturday and was blown away. There was like 3 times the amount of girls to guys. Needless to say I had a blast. Def. going back this weekend. Guys, I suggest grabbing a table and hanging back and getting some of those beautiful models at your table. (LOL)\n\nMusic was amazing! Everyone in the room was having a blast.

The place was empty and me and my friends (along with hot girls) still waited outside for half an hour. THen we waited another half hour for the coat check. The place was cheesy with pretentious people a plenty. We decided to leave after having a horrible time and the lady at the coat check lost my scarf. The bouncer and manger refused to give me my 3 dollar coat check fee or 10 door fee. I wound up walking home and FREEZING

This place is the WORST! My friends and I planned on partying there for New Years Eve this year, we bought all of our tickets in advance and got there at about 10:30PM....After waiting on line for almost an hour and a half we were told we couldnt get in because the place was too crowded- REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT WE HAD ALREADY PURCHASED TICKETS! We were forced to head across the street just in time to miss the 12:00 Ball Drop- don't waste your time or money at Rumor!

i dont' understand what everyone is complaining about. like every club and lounge in manahattan, the doors are always strict. we waited for 10 mins and go in without a problem. the doorguy was actually very friendly compared to most of the doorguys out there. my only complaint is that the dj did not play any house music. my suggestion is to get there early and make sure you bring enough girls or get a table reservation.

Never Never Never go here! and particularly not if youre thinking of having a party here! i am usually very easy going and content with most places i go however, the way we were treated at this place was beyond belief! The staff is rude and incompetent!!!! especially those at the door! i have been going to the most sought after clubs and lounges in NY for years, and have never ever encountered such problems!!! i had a party here recently, my boyfriend ended up having to wait outside all night to make sure the bouncers let my friends in (even pretty girls)!!! we were on a list too! \nonce in...you were not allowed out for a cigarette or anything at all if you wanted to come back in..the whole night was overall very stressfull...unnecessarily. the place is very chic and well put together physically but NOT worth it!!!

Went with a bunch of friends and was pleasantly surprised. Combination of a lounge and a club - together. Lots of fun, great music, tons of people. Great new discovery! It did take a while to get in but I am glad I waited.

My roommate celebrated her birthday at Rumor last night. Inside, the decor looked chic, the evening seemed promising. But then the bouncers kept the subsequent guest list waiting outside for no apparent reason. My friends could not go outside to smoke; otherwise, they had to pay the $30 cover charge to re-enter the bar (and some did). The alcohol tab totaled $900 even though we only ordered one bottle of vodka -- and this is after Rumor claimed to have ""comped"" a bottle of champagne. Admittedly, there may have been a few more small drinks like a Red Bull included, but not enough to equal $900. The bar also double-charged a friend's credit card. \n\nOverall, the service was deplorable. The chauvinistic bouncers constantly made inappropriate comments to ladies. The managers seemed clueless and inebriated. No one helped resolve the situation, and as a consequence, we shall never return. \n\n

I and a few of my single girlfriends went there last saturday, hoping to meet some cool people. If you are single, and want to meet some attractive people, don't even bother with this place. Waiting in line (wasn't even that long anyway), and dealing with annoying door people didn't really bother me. What really bothered me is when I got in (after waiting for 30 min in line and paid $20) and saw this ugly and cheesy looking interior, and nerdy-looking, very ill-dressed and not-so-attractive(being nice) people (girls and guys). Obviously beautiful people belong to beautiful places, and Rumor isn't one of them.

I don't want to be a whiney person who complains about bouncers and door people, but yesterday's experience was more than an annoyance. One of my close friends had his birthday party there, and invited over 100 people. They promised him that all his guests who are on the guest list would get in for free. Did it happen? Not exactly. Every one of us had to pay the cover (including girls) after waiting in line for 30-40 mins, and they made my friend (b-day boy) wait in line! For obvious reasons, he got very upset (on his b-day!), and got into a fight with the manager... and you get the picture! My advice is... do not plan any private events there! Oh, and the place is actually not as cool as the picture! You feel like you are in a basement.

This is the type of bar that you could go to every weekend and not get bored. It cateers to the crowd who likes to chill at a table with a bottle or the group that likes to dance. There is something for everyone.

Not a bad place to see a show. Sure it got crowded but I still had a seat to relax and listen to the music.

5 of us went to see a show on a friday night. Doors were to open at 7:30pm. It was raining heavily and at 7:45 they opened the doors, gave us our tickets, stamped our hands, ripped our tickets once we got downstairs. We sat down and ordered drinks only to have 10 mins later the manager come screaming at our table about us being inside and doors weren't open yet. He was on a rampage, pointing at us and screaming. HELLO....we PAID to get in and you treat patrons this way?? Never will we go back again! RUDE beyond belief! Sound system didn't meet the hype and it is not such a great place to see a band.

This is one of the few clubs in the city that I do not mind being packed into. I love the Open Mic nights that they have. I've never been in a room where everyone can sing and sing well. I have been twice and plan to go back again and again!!!

A good place to go with a bunch of friends for a typical village bar scene- better drinks than the other bleecker area bars. Gets a bit crowded on weekends, but what doesn't in the area? There's a loungy room to the side which is pretty nice, and the bouncer was friendly.
