This Seafood restaurant combines both Asian and American influences in the meals. The food is delicious! The Grilled Hawaiian Prawns and the Scallops were scrumptious! The zen garden is amazing for a romantic setting and the service is top of the line! A perfect place for a date or a group of friends!

I had high expectations, and was a little disappointed. The Charred Tuna Sashimi 'Nicoise' appetizer is great, and the quail egg is divine.

However the Atlantic Skatewing with crispy bacon and leek risotto was sabotaged by someone on a salt rampage, and I found myself reaching for ice water between every bite. The dish was beautifully presented though, so perhaps it was just an off-night.

The atmosphere is very reserved and romantic, good for a date, but a little too dark. I felt like I could hardly see the people I dined with!

I was so excited to come to Spring after hearing great things about it but found the actual experience to be highly disappointing. The online menu is seldomly updated and thus I found such a limited selection for me to eat that I ordered a highly priced appetizer as my entree. The food was decent but nothing special and the service was slow and lackluster. Our entrees actually took 1.5 hrs to come! Would recommend Naha or Zealous over Spring.

I have been dining at Spring with my husband for his birthday for the last 3 years. Each and every experience has been a pure delight. The food is so fresh and prepared superbly. . The staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The ambiance is warm and relaxing. Loved the food loved the staff loved everything. We look forward to returning next year if not sooner!

I must start by applauding Spring on their detail to service. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and made the night delightful. Upon being seated, we received custom menus that had Happy Birthday Amy printed at the top as we were celebrating my sister, Amy's birthday. We tried the scallop and potato raviolis and the special seared ahi tuna appetizers. I felt that they were both very small for the price. The scallops should have been a bit bigger. The entrees were much better. The presentation of all of the food was notable. My girlfriend really enjoyed the salmon, which I will say was very soft. My New Zealand Grouper, on the other hand, was a bit tougher than I expected, however, still tasted good. I think that next time I will take the waiter's suggestion and try the scallops. My parents had the beremunde and monkfish. I believe that the monkfish was also a bit tough, but the beremunde was prepared very well. For dessert, I would definitely recommend the pear tart. We ordered a second one after we devoured the first. I am confident that I have had better seafood, however, the service and ambience are well worth the visit to Spring.

Pros: Service and Ambience

Cons: Appetizer portions

.

The soup was excellent, and the waiter was great. The food was amazingly poor, both entrees were bad. The halibut with risotto: the fish was dry and the risotto was hard and needed to be cooked longer. The Skate was soggy and flavorless. The portions were very small, though we left half of our entrees since they were pretty bad. The scallop potato "ravioli" was tasty but SMALL- we got 4 bites out of it, and it was $15.00. I was quite surprised, as the Custom House is GREAT!! Sit at the bar and have the soup-then leave!!

Pros: coconut lemongrass soup

Cons: Price, portions, entree food quality

.

The food was amazing, the service and atmosphere wonderful and not unncessarily pretentious or arrogant. The seafood choices are great, and truly artistic (although not skimpy). There are a couple chicken/redmeat choices, but this place thrives on its fresh seafood creations.

Our server, Jeff, was phenom! The ambiance and design is very comfortable and it's easy to have a romantic dinner or bring a group of friends. Our dinner took just long enough without being a marathon; we were there 2 hours and loved every minute!

Dinner was worth every penny, and is not overpriced for the superb dining experience that it is; there 's a reason the chef is listed in Bon Appetit as a premier chef!
I just hope they have the lemongrass and coconut soup when you go!

Pros: Delicious, Fine dining

.

Their appetizers are good - we had the Shrimp salad and Lemongrass soup. The soup was especially good. Their entree menu is mostly fish only (no shrimp, crab, lobster, mussels, etc) - try the Brazilian Snapper which was flavorful. Don't go with the Black Bass if you are looking for a lot of flavor. The portions are not that big though and the prices are high. Also, the menu did not have as many non-seafood choices as we would like.

Dazzling experience. This is the kind of restaurant I wish I could find near me (NY), meaning adventuresome food, beautifully, in fact artfully, presented, at very good price points. This was 4-star at 2-star pricing. (Other reviews about chincy portions are wrong our out of date.) We barely had room for dessert. Winners: an Australian barramundi fish (better than sea bass) and scallops. Service was intelligent and sensitive...waiter knew when it was time to "tell us the specials". Thanks for being there, but not there. Restaurant is beautiful and did not become noisy, though full. The meal ended with a complimentary "chocolate soup," which was exceptional, and would have been the highlight had not everything else been so terrific. Wine by the glass for $6-$8, and desserts in the $6-7 range were a bargain, the the main courses at $25-$28 were worth more. I'd love to be a weekly regular.

Pros: Knockout food, visual space, service w/enthusiasm

Cons: None

.

THE GOOD: The food quality was amazing. I had the Maine Skate; hands down the best piece of fish I've ever had. And the butternut squash and apple soup was unlike anything I've ever had. The atmosphere also gets a nod for being zen-like, yet modern.
THE BAD: The appetizers are horrendously small and overpriced, literally not enough to whet the appetite of a young child, muchless two adults.
Be prepared to be frowned upon and made to feel cheap by the waitstaff if God forbid, you choose not to order wine or desert with your meals. Gasp! The crowd for the most part seemed unpretentious enough, although be prepared to have a few Grey Poupon limo-riders in the crowd, who frown in distaste every time you choose to laugh or your voice rises above a whisper. A good restaurant, but you can do better...

Friends and I went to this restaurant for the first time to catch up and have some good food. Unfortunately the portions were so small that we all had to get a snack on the way home. And on top of that, the Spring called my friend and asked him to consider "other dining options" in the future. I guess we were a little to vocal for this pretentious wanna-be restaurant

We recently visiting Spring from Seattle and absolutely loved it. The experience of fine dining without the uncomfortableness of a stuffy fine makes this one heck of a dining establishment.

The food was excellent and the service was supreme. Overall, one of our new national favorites.

Don't come here if you are hungry. For the $22 to $30 for an entree, you would assume that you would be served a decent portion of food, but you would be wrong.

Dinner at the Spring bar two Fridays ago was simply the best meal I've had in a long time. Fantastic wine list and exquisite ingredients. Not much I can add to the many excellent marks Spring has received here, but I would like to compliment Adam and the rest of the bar crew for top flight service and for keeping my wife amused and tended to for over an hour in the empty house while her office-bound husband threatened to stand her up repeatedly. Spring reminds us that good service includes hospitality and genuineness.

my friends and i thought spring was fantastic all around. the service was great - our server was very knowledgeable and perfect with timing and the maitre d' visited the table several times just to check on us. we loved the serene, simple setting in the pretty old bathhouse building. and the food was amazing: delicious american foie gras and perfectly cooked scallops with oxtail.

Four of us had to wait even with a reservation, but they made up for it with two complimentary appetizers. The food was PHENOMENAL! It was filling, but not so much that we didn't order two desserts to try. A little pricey but if you appreciate amazing food then it's worth it!

Recently visited with my girlfriend on a trip from Paris. Lots of hype and all true. Menu interesting, service relaxed and effective. Chef has talent, but not enough to oversee certain details that could make his good and trendy restaurant something great and memorable. The fried stuff (tempura on the tempura lobster was not as good as it ought to be), fish a little dry and overcooked (Monkfish (why did you bread it, big boy?). Bread was no good (better on airplane- KLMeconomy class) Dessert was half great. You've misunderstood your own dessert. Pear tarte with roquefort ice cream should be roquefort ice cream (fun good surprising) with pear tarte (unprofessionally bad puffpastry). Wine was excellent, pricey- amateurish presentation by waitress who was cool and helpful otherwise. Good restaurant that could be great... maybe that is not the point. Raise the standard in Chicago- could be worldclass.

I've read some of the other reviews complaining about the service. Those incidents are very unfortunate because I had an incredible experience at Spring. My family took me here for my birthday and Spring was very accomidating. My brother spilled hot tea on the table and there was a rush of servers to assist.

The food was spectacular and the ambience is very unique. McClain is doing some really interesting things with seafood - and as a seafoodphile, I fell in love with this place. Definitely on my top 5 list for Chicago restaurants. Can't wait to go back!

This is the type of dining experience that will top your list for years to come. The service was fully attentive, making helpful suggestions about complimentary wines. Although they were busy, I did not feel that the service suffered because of it. The dishes were creative combinations that were beautifully presented. I love to try new, hip restaurants but find myself back at Spring every chance I get. Treat yourself to Spring!

If you have a discerning taste and a little extra going-out money to spare, make sure to try this place once. Almost missing the non-descript storefront entrance, I was surprised at how roomy and well-spaced this basement restaurant was arranged. Soft light and Asian-inspired minimalist design, along with the eclectic table settings, made Spring classy yet very homey at the same time. The lobster bisque was amazing, and only the erratic table service was able to put a damper on my enjoyment of the sea scallops. In all, this is a great restaurant for about any occasion- just make sure to get a reservation...and a little extra in your pocketbook.

Having recently moved from San Francisco, I've grown accustomed to outstanding fusion. The food was quite good and creatively presented. Especially the scallops with ox tail and oysters on the half shell. Surprisingly, we ordered a bottle of Riesling that complimented our seafood dishes quite nicely. I'm not a big dessert person but the ones we had were terrific. The decor was relaxing but the restaurant was way too loud. The atmosphere is a bit pretentious but expected. Our waitress rocked!

The food is superb fusion, but menu can be a bit diverse and to move from a delicate and creamy, foie gras with figs to spicy curry and lemon grass soup to hearty rib eye can be a bit difficult, especially when courses are served within seconds of each other. But, the pleasures of fine dining do not matter when you can't enjoy the delicate flavors because the service is too quick and stuffy and management will not rectify mistakes.

As a Christmas gift I gave my best friend a gift certificate at your restaurant. Being that I have worked in the fine dining industry and this was on the top of the list of ratings in Chicago, it was my first choice. As the bus boy was cleaning up, instead of paying attention to what he was doing, he was watching another bus boy, he hit the plate with my friends wine glass as she was drinking her wine. The wine spilled all over her top and pants. He did not even offer her another glass of wine. When the hostess was notified, instead of apologizing, she said- "Oh, Do you see those white towels over there!?! - They are great at wiping things off.......:):):)

If you have no experience in authentic Asian food, then Spring will seem a revelation of sorts. If you have eaten on North Broadway, West Devon, Chinatown, or any Thai place in Rogers Park or Evanston, or enjoy French cusine, then Spring is just Asian light with French overtones. So depending on your dining acumen it's either fabulous or just expensive Chinese breakfast with great wine. Overall: Overnuanced nuances fade to nonexistence.

Food was great. Must get the appetizers - lobster spring roll, soft shell crab appetizer, lobster/soft shell crab/corn chowder. In terms of the entrees the menu is dominated by seafood but the steak was awesome. Grilled to perfection comes on a bed of japanese mushrooms and shortrib potstickers (fantastic)! The scallops are also a good call. The chocolate cone desert was great. Waitstaff/bus boys/etc all very professional. Only downer=can be a bit loud.

Having dined at a number of excellent restaurants in the city, Spring gets my nod for the most well balanced menu with flavors that all flow together. From the outset of the dinner to the end, I was overwhelmed by how delicious everything was. My wife and I had the maine lobster springroll and the scallop and potato ravioli for appetizers. Both were wonderful. We both had soup which was delicious as well. Our entree was the special and was one of the best pieces of fish I've ever had.
