We ate here last week and really enjoyed everything. Service was great; we never had to ask for anything, as the waiter and busboy were on top of evertyhing. The food was delicious; the waiter recommended the puffed rice crusted shrimp roll, which sounds weird but was great. He also recommended short ribs, which came already boned, so it was a cube of rich, dense meat which had been pan seared; and the chicken dumplings, which was pulled chicken meat in a wonton wrapper, steamed, with a sour soy sauce called Ponzu. All very good. The entrees were outstanding: a grilled red snapper with curry sauce and string beans, and my friend ordered duck breast, which came with dumplings whose skin was made from tapioca pearls! Interesting and unique. For dessert, we shared the signature dessert, green tea donuts. One thing, don't be scared by the menu. The chef is able to take odd sounding combinations and make them delicious. I've eaten in lots of hotel restaurants, and they're usually pretty mediocre, so Riingo was a wonderful surprise! Plus, everybody was very friendly, from the manager who stopped by to chat briefly with us, to the host, who remembered us on our way out. I highly recommend Riingo! The only down part is the bathrooms; they're unmarked and kind of hidden, so it was a little embarrassing to have to be led to them. But thats a small quibble!!

I had heard good things, and I've been to Marcus's Aquavit, so we were expecting greatness.

If you go, be sure to avoid the table we had: in the hallway next to the server's station. Each time they grabbed some silverware, they slammed the drawer closed and we felt it in the back of our booth seat. Plus, we were privy to all their chit-chat about other tables--- not cool.

When I ordered a Gibson to start, our waitress was not quite sure what it was. I explained that a Gibson is a gin martini served with cocktail onions. The woman at the next table said, 'I think he's the only man in the world who knows what a Gibson is!".

The braised short rib dish was unique: the meat was seared into a block about the size of a deck of cards (but twice as thick). The result is a crisp, carbon exterior--- wonderfully, juicy within.

About $140 for the three of us.

Will not return.

I ate here last week; what a great meal. Food was delicious--try the shortribs, it looks like a brownie! but the taste is rich and meaty. The donuts, which the manager Jamey recommended are the signature dish. I was hesitant, but they were great! The space is pretty; small, but comfortable. I liked the service, he knew what he was talking about and didn't bother me and my wife. Try some of the specialty cocktails too, the friendly bartender, Russell, made me a drink with tarragon and lemonade! Everybody, from the manager to the busboy, made us feel welcome and next time we come into the city we will definitely retrun!

Hey, if you ever find yourself in midtown or have a couple hours before your train back to CT, you should walk over to the restaurant next to the alex hotel, Riingo. We went there for the restaurant week menu and thought the food was really good, (salmon and steak) . the staff is engaging & very helpful. The hostesses could use a little help though, the girl we saw both times was way too young to be handling customers. The girl bartender (Gia?) is awesome. Our first visit we had a short asian server who was cool and patient who helped us choose our sushi and sashimi, we like that he stopped to talk to us. On our next visit our server was tall, with a beard, who was very knowledgeable, he got us to try sakes and the most amazing chicken dumplings, he knew his food and wine and was very polite. The desserts are ok and could be more varied. Oh and definitely try the signature cocktails. We will definitely come back!

I work in the area.mMy collegues and I came here just for drinks, but stayed for a wonderful dinner. The lounge area is perfectly intimate and cozy. The specialty drink selection is wonderful, my favorite was the t-teanni. We were having such a wonderful time, that we opted to cancel our other reservations and stay here for dinner. We were not disappointed. We were easily accomodated. The service was great. The server quickly made a number of wonderful food recommendations and wine pairings. The short ribs, crabapple roll and chicken dumplings are the standout appertizers. For entrees do not miss out on the duck, lamb and salmon dish. I am very excited to have such a great quality restaurant in the area and look forward to coming back.

I discovered Riingo a while back, when friends of mine dragged me above 14th street. I have come here several times now and it never fails me. I had dinner here Saturday night, and there are some new menu items which are worth noting. The duck breast with tapioca dumpling is unique and extremely flavorful. And don't miss out on the crabapple roll. The staff is attentive as usual. And one should definately pop into the bar/lounge area if you're looking for great cocktails. The Sparkling Geisha is a must have. I will continue making Riingo a destination point.

Found ouselves in Midtown recently, figured we'd give this place a try-What a bad time! Empty restaurant, underdone food. Sushi was ok, but nothing special.
Ate here recently, there were maybe 3 other tables there-place is oddly divided, I could hear everything going on in the kitchen! Including a lot of yelling...
Waiter seemed nice, and was trying, but the manager seemed rude and unfriendly.
Empty bar, tables outside were deserted...now I know why. Avoid it, you'll have a better time at Chipotle.

Delicious food, excellent service, knowledgable staff, and charming space.
I've been going back to this restaurant many times and had very pleasant dining expererience every single time- though I am a very picky person when it comes to quality of service and food. I am a major foodie and have been to many new restaurants serving Japanese/Asian influenced fusion cuisine, and Riingo still remains as my solid favorite.
Some of my favorites are Chicken dumplings, Braised pork belly, King crab roll, Shrimp tempura roll, and incredibly rich Warm chocolate cake. Delicious and creative specialty cocktails, too.

We were 45 mins late but still seated promptly in the back dining room. Friday night at 9:45 it wasn't crowded. They have an upstairs dining room but didnt see it. Ambience is somewhat modern like the video projection of the an animated candle on the wall. Designed to excite and impress but felt short on my ratings.

Young chef Samuelsson has an impressive resume. Food is influenced by chef's previous experience of working in different cuisines but you could see mainly Japanese inspired dishes. Seafood was good but I didnt think it was exceptional. I found the wine list to be pricy with somewhat limited selections.

Overall dining experience was above average and I would recommend it but I wasn't very excited. I would probably go back to try other dishes but not in a hurry when there are so many new places to try.

I dined at riingo on friday dec. 2nd and i fell in love with the atmosphere, food and drinks. The restaurant was busy however not once did our server make us feel that he was too busy to make our night great. The winelist was great and the food was even better. Our server recomended the right wine with our sushi. We all enjoyed everything however what we enjoyed the most was the rice puff crusted shrimp roll. The location of the restaurant was a little out of our way, since most of us live downtown, which didnt matter once we got there. Overall we all left happy and was totally worth the cab ride to midtown.

I never eat above 14th street, but friends of mine dragged me along anyway. I'm glad they did, because this restaurant is definately a find. The sushi is extremely fresh, and their king crab avocado roll is out of this world. My friends dined on the lobster tempura roll and the toro daikon, both are worth every penny. I also recommend the bass, and the ny strip was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was perfect for my friends and I, but I think boys who want to impress their girls should definately check it out as well. Our waiter was well versed with the menu and provided us with great service, he didn't hover over the table as some servers tend to do in high end restaurants. Ask a host or a manager to show you the great wine room up in the mezzanine.

A friend had told me about Riingo explaining how I had to go and try the Scallop roll which he said and I quote " It is out of this world". I went with a friend for dinner last week and I was blown away. The restaurant itself is beautiful , very clean and modern. The service was very good.We sat in the lounge before dinner and both had the baked apple martini which was delicious. Our server was so polite and knowledgable (on wine)a joy!!!We then sat for dinner. My friend was so right, scallop roll was so unbelievable and the tuna entree served on beef cheek dumplings could'nt have been better. The whole experience was amazing and I can't wait to go back and try other entree's on the menu ( a couple really caught my eye) . What a specail place !!

I'll begin at the beginning.

The octopus appetiser was tired, overcooked, and seemed like the only reason it ended up on our plate was cause it was too inept to avoid capture in the first place. Salmon ceviche was nothing to write home about.

In between courses, one of the servers (there were several as the night wore on, apparently confused as to their roles) removed our forks and placed them back on the table. I'm sorry, but for a buck sixty for two, I expect fresh silverware. Interestingly, they did take away the knives, perhaps because I was beginning to look peeved.

The burger that the Village Voice loved so much was overcooked. Steak salad good, if overseasoned.

The final insult came during dessert, when they turned the lights all the way up, perturbing the remaining customers. Then a lady came in and waved a remote at the ceiling.

We came here in the evening without a reservation. The restaurant was completely booked, so they opened a private room for us. We had three waiters serve the table. They were a bit clumsy and dropped some things along the way. However, they really tried to accommodate. The bread was very good though the flat bread is very spicy. The spread was very good. Both the Cod and the Halibut were excellent. The food has definite Japanese influence. Overall, we left very pleased.

My boyfriend and I LOVED it! The decor is amazing, the music wasn't too loud, and the video art is interesting, but not obtrusive. Try the the spring roll with foie gras and pickled watermelon. Fantastic. The lobster tempura roll was definitely the best sushi roll we have ever had. The lobster was still hot and juicy, and the other ingredients complemented it so well. Try the NY Strip steak with country bacon & french toast. I am not a big steak eater, but this one had so much flavor! All of the drinks that we tried were As for desserts, my favorite is the chocolate cake and my boyfriend really liked their pumpkin cheesecake. Notice the 4 x $ signs in the left column on this page. It isn't cheap, but you get great food. Not your run-of-the-mill Asian fusion.

The caesar salad was a huge bowl of iceberg lettuce, a dressing that wasn't ceasar, 1 crouton and a few slices of thin chicken -- for $12.00 -- rip off.

Don't order a mixed drink -- 1 martini $14.00

It was a friday night when i 1st went to riingo.we sat at the bar for a few drinks and to enjoy the DJ.i have gone back twice after that. i sat at the patio the last time.beautiful service&food was wonderful. I would recommend riingo for people who are looking to have a great meal without the attitude that a lot of 3 star restaurants have... also i enjoyed the happy hour and thursday & friday nights DJ at riingo. Apparently there is a Sunday brunch jazz band which i look forward to seeing sometime.

A group of 5 work buddies just got back from RIIgo.. and all of us were unexpressed.. the sushi in the bento box was TINY, and obviously a few days old. But to be fair the brazen short rib was fantastic. We were all lured here under the guise of the Kobe sushi roll... which to our disappointment was not available for lunch. The wait staff was very friendly and professional. Possibly this would be a great Dinner spot, but as for lunch, i would highly recommend avoiding it.

A friend and I dropped by Riingo the other night and were sorely disappointed. The menu left much to be desired. The entrees didn't appear appealing or interesting. Among our selections were the braised beef in applesauce, the infamous kobe and green tea donuts - none of which were worthwhile or substantial. i mistook the braised beef for a brownie, we almost threw the kobe out thinking it was a dark piece of lettuce instead of two slivers of meat, and the only thing about the donuts that had anything to do w/ green tea was an eyedrop worth of ice cream! This place is far overpiced. The only positive aspects were the staff and the environment. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive but unfortunately NOT knowledgeable about the menu. She claimed EVERYTHING was great and had no useful suggestions.

When I say focus I mean the main portion of a dish. For instance, the rare tuna dish had excellently prepared tuna but everything else that came on the plate was BELOW average. Subtle flavors can shine beautifully, but in this case the flavors were washed out, not subtle. I tasted more water in the sea beans than I did flavor. It's exactly what you would taste if preparing mashed potatoes at home and there's too much moisture in them when mashing. The same went for the shrimp, rice noodle salad with coconut milk. The shrimp were fabulously prepared but the overall flavor of the noodles wasn't there. There was a hint of the coconut milk but it was only in the small pool of liquid at the bottom of the bowl.

With a name like Samuelsson behind it, I expected more solid follow through on everything...

I had a really great meal here this past Monday-Really fresh, delicious sushi, the lobster roll was fantastic-The short rib-yum!
Drinks-Asian Pear martini-best of it's kind I've ever had.
Desserts-Donuts rival the donuts at Craft-yes, they're that good, so is the ice cream and sorbet-
Go! It's great!

Great food, especially if you love tuna - it's everywhere on the menu! Interesting cocktails, loved the blood orange margarita! Very personable staff, especially the lady sushi chef. I had a special toro appetizer, lots of sushi, a side of shitake tempura and a terrific glass of wine(austrian pinot blanc?). Was too full for dessert but was given wonderful little sweets before I left. Overall I was very well taken care of and look forward to my return visit...

Was too full for dessert but was given wonderful little sweets before I left. Overall I was very well taken care of and look forward to my return visit...

Pros: friendly service, GOOD food, fun cocktails

Cons: temperature, strange music

So, after a long week of work I was looking forward to trying out this semi-new restaurant and found myself in the middle of a pit of dining despair. The $14 martinis were decent but nothing better than the drinks I used to make at a chili's back in the day and they took forever to arrive. The appetizer was an uneventful experience at best and the steak I had for dinner tasted like it was from one of the diners at the South of the Border rest stop in South Carolina. My date's Mahi-Mahi was raw in the middle and had to be reserved. All of this for $170! This place is nothing more than a overpriced tourist trap and makes New York look bad. The owners should just close up and open a White Castle.

Though their donut dessert was really good the food was just okay. Small portions and over priced. Marcus may have it all figured out with Aquivit but he is not on the top of his game at Riingo. The waitress was so bad that we had to ask twice for everything and she was neither friendly or helpful while we were trying to order.

Riingo, like some other new and trendy eateries ubiquitous in NYC, makes "fusion" of traditional Asian cuisine with contemporary dazzle. However, I typically find that I leave such restaurants still hungry and much much lighter in the wallet.
Anyway, it's a nice looking place and the wait staff were very friendly, but I just don't think it's worth the money. Alas, you pay so much for everything else in this city, what's the difference.

I must say when you work near Grand Central, they are thousands of places to eat. But from now on there is only one as far as I am concerned.
Great caesar salad with a spin. Great Chicken panini. Everything is done right and the service is quick and friendly. Can't wait to go back tomorrow.

I recently stumbled on Riingo. I was very pleasantly surprised and charmed by the service and the food. The execution, presentation and flavors are that of a Three star restaurant and the servers navigate your experience with friendly complicity. A winner on all fronts. Try the edamame spread; I've become addicted

I am very impressed with Riingo. I usually don't like restaurants, but this one was a cut above some others. If I had my way, I'd eat at Riingo at least once a month, or maybe once a week. The brownies... fan-tastic!!! I think it wise to book a reservations - this place is very hot Hot HOT right now and sometimes I just sit at the bar. The bartenders are great - they sure know how to make a drink that is good!

I was planning a party for a senior member of our staff and called Riingo to check availability. They were very accomodating and we picked a fabulous menu which included a fantastic sushi/roll/sashimi platter to start. The presentation was fantastic and our attendees really enjoyed the course. We were able to customize our menu to include alot of american options, we even had a vegan in our group and the Chef came upstairs to make sure she ate exactly what she wanted. The service was phenominal thanks to an attentive staff. Cheers Riingo, we shall return!

We had a 8:00 reservation and upon arrival were told the table was not ready. But as we waited the hostess kept us informed of the table status and management offered us red apple martinis while we waited.
Once seated, we were guided on an incredible journey by our server who was knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic throughout our meal. The timing of the food was perfect and we truly enjoyed every bite.
The sushi was beautifully presented on large platters. We enjoyed the nori wrapped foie gras, tuna cesar and yellowtail sashimi. The snapper was an incredible dish served on the bone with a red miso broth.
We don't know how but, we managed to save room for the green tea donuts and chocolate miso cake. The menu allows you many options and we will defenitely return for many more exciting dining experiences to come.

I definitely would not go back to this place, although it is around the corner from my apartment. We had a reservation at 8, had to add one more person to our table, and it took them about an hour and half to 'reset' our table. I was tempted to go set it myself. The service was slow and the food was nothing amazing, especially for the prices. I would say its not worth your time.

Pros: The service was outstanding, alot of personal attention from the server, manager, as well as other personnel nearby. We made a reservation for a Saturday night and was seated right away. The oyster roll had great textures, crispy on the outside, soft and warm on the inside. The sides: tempura mushrooms were great, crispy with filling. The desserts were increadible. Highly recommend the green tea donuts. It was a mix of different textures and tastes that were unique and surprising. Also good was the miso cake. Really chocolaty and melts in your mouth. The end of dinner truffles that came with the meal were a nice touch.

Cons: the seared fish was ok, but not very exciting. I wish the bread was warm

I heard many good reviews and so I made a reservation 1 week before and invited some friends along. Although we arrived on time, we were told to sit and wait while some customers were paying their check. 20 minutes later, some guys in suits showed up, made a fuss because their table wasn't ready, and so they got seated immediately! We then tried to reason with the staff politely, but were told that there was nothing they could do and they made us wait for another 20 mins! There was no apology nor explanation, just plain rude stares! Although the food was good, we all agreed that we will never return again. I have been countless of restaurants in the city but was never treated with such bad manners. Although it's hip at the moment, but with such bad service, I doubt it will be hip for too long!

I was there at the beginning when they first opened, and just there recently, and found the combination of food flavors still pushing the upper limits of experimental ecstacy -- this time with the rich and creamy silkiness of their foie gras and avocado salad. This recommended by a well informed and attentive server who went on to offer other inventive suggestions in which to round out my meal. Listen closely. Let the servers be your guide with this one!
If your attention span is short, there's always a lot to look at an interesting, mixed crowd that reminds us we're in NYC.

sleek japanese-inspired space, with an added warmth and touch of creativity. our dinner was marred by painfully slow service. nevertheless, the food was harmonious, balancing the refined and subtle japanese palate with various worldly influences. the elements in the cocktails were more balanced my on my second visit, but delicious and still pricey at $9-12. riingo offers premium and unique sashimi and sushi selections. the famous mousse-stuffed shitake tempura mushrooms were juicy puffy buttons of delight. our fish entrees (the semi-delicate seared char with coconut milk and the heartier poached bass with mushrooms and tasty, tender octopus) were perfectly cooked and presented. the green tea doughnuts, cinnamon sauce, and green tea kulfi that comprised one dessert each offered a developed, distinct taste. but together, they made for a knockout finale to dinner. overall enjoyable, recommended experience despite the sluggish pace of the kitchen.

I had the poached bass and it was just way too salty. Everything else was nice. Our waitress was helpful with making the choices and she did a really good job. What I didn't understand was why this waitress seemed to be afraid of other waiters-very strange.

I went here twice-first time was excellent and second time was just ok. I ordered the same dishes but the quality has gone down signigicantly-it's such a shame!! It was sooo good before, what happened? This man who welcomed us laughed at me when I asked him on the way out if the chef changed, saying I'm not a professional food critic-I'm not but I know when my favorite dishes taste different!! So I left the place being offended.

I am a big fan of Marcus, and I was really hoping for something special. First of all, the lights were too bright, and the music was too soft. The service was new, so I won't hold them to too high a standard. The menu was not nearly as daring as I had hoped, and the food was overall just ok. The sushi was plain lousy though... I hope in time that Marcus will turn this around.

Marcus is on the line placing passion to plate (thankfully not playing celebra-chef), but his stab at an American-Japanese menu was falls short of his potential. If not for a competant a la carte selection (foie-gras at $8, but served with wasabi?!?), one would hardly distinguish this offering from other "ASIAN-Fusion" restaurants. Plating was the most exciting part - you'll see when you get there.
Meat dishes were far better flavored than the fish (all five I tasted were flat). Pluses: the sumptuous Nori-wrapped Foie-gras & candied watermelon at $17, the signature apple (riingo) & pomegranate cocktail was great, so was the kumquat sour. Avoid the baked char entree (served on top of a sour-dough-like bread) and monk-fish liver with char ceviche app. - a senseless way to eat a perfectly tasty char. A '99 Muscat desert wine was fantastic but at $18 a glass make it count.

This place definitely has the "just-opened-so-we-have-to-try-it" crowds, but luckily, the crowds are warranted. The food is amazing. I went there with a friend a few nights after it opened and we were pleased with both the quality of the food and the quality of the service. The sushi is all great, but the real winner is the braised pork belly with honey glazed garlic. Oh, and if you want a drink that's a lot less-than-ordinary but better than anything you've had lately, make sure you try the Kumquat Sour. The Green Tea Donuts were also pretty unique and very good.
