I toured this hospital while pregnant with my 2nd child. After learning about all the rules/restrictions, I knew this wouldn't be the place for us. No food while in labor, high epidural/c-section rates, baby stays in nursery for 4 hours after birth!! I wanted a natural approach with no drugs, interventions, etc...basically I wanted to do it MY way, since it is MY delivery. Unfortunately, I did go to this hospital (after my baby was born at home) and the care was just as bad as I expected. Every nurse was rude to me except one. I was lied to, manipulated, and ignored! I wanted to leave but was threatened! The bracelets/alarm placed on my baby's ankles dug into his skin and when a nurse allowed me to remove one, she was cursed by another nurse.

I went to the hopital following birth because I was told I needed to be "checked out" by a dr. But when I asked the ob/gyn why she needed to do an exam & if it was really necessary, she said "No". So why do it? I refused the exam, as well as every unnecessary test on my baby. Also, a dr. never checked on me again. If you think I am paranoid or over-reacting, please, ask yourself, "Why do we do these things, the unessary tests/procedures?" Ask questions, think for yourself! I did that and was made to feel like a fool. In my opinion, the fools are the ones not questioning things!

A month later I had to return because of severe pain in my abdomen, which I suspected was an ovarian torsion. I could barely stand/walk and was in tears, but had to wait FOUR hours in the waiting room! I nearly left so I could call 911 so I could be brought in by ambulance and actually get treated.

I will never step foot in this hospital again!

PROS: There is one good nurse, she made 10 hours of my stay bearable
CONS: You do it their way or else you are made to feel ignorant/lesser than

Our first child was born at Sentara Bayside Hospital. I loved the fact that my husband was able to stay the night with me and our newborn. Now that I've given birth in 2 other hospitals, I must say that Sentara Bayside Hospital has the best afterbirth rooms. The rooms are furnished with a fold out couch in which your husband/significant other/friend/parent could spend the night while helping you care for the newborn. Being a mother for the first time, this was a huge help.
The only complaint I had was that a nurse knowingly sent me our baby with soiled diapers. I was glad that I read a lot of books for information about prepregnancy, baby's birth, and postpregnancy because I was unsure of why our baby's stool (meconium) was "strange"--- it was sticky and dark. I guess I wished that she was as caring as other nurses were... in a sense that they're willing to explain things to you if you had a question instead of just leaving the room right away. Otherwise, a great hospital full of friendly doctors and nurses!
