Stopped for roast beef sandwiches and fish fry during a week in July 2010.
Compared to other restaurants, food was definitely priced high for the type and quality of food.
Beef on Weck with fries and cole slaw were very good. Quantity for a $11.00 sandwich was minimal.
Beef dinner without weck served with fries and cole slaw was very sufficient. This meal for $11.00 price range was good.
Fried haddock dinner was very overrated. The option of baked
fish was not available. The fries that were served with this meal were excellent. The fish was fried in old oil, overdone, and the size was small by Buffalo standards. Size was similar to two Mickey D's fish sandwiches. Mickey D's was far better. Sorry but this is true.
The Haddock fish fry was probably the worst I have had in Buffalo in the last 20 years. I could not believe the number of people who came in and consumed this product. Old oil, greasy, small and over $12.00. Give me a break.
Service was excellent and food quality poor to good.
Overall rating will have to be poor. When one or especially two people in your party have a bad food product, it ruins the evening. Be careful about this place.

If you want the best beef on weck, the best Tom and Jerry Drink and the greatest German Potato Salad, go to Schwabls. I am from California and Connecticut and this is one of the best places I have eaten at. The cost is low too. Hard to get a seat on Friday nights though.

This restaurant is famous for its roast beef on kimmeweck roll sandwiches. There is a good reason for this. They are delicious. Other food in here is also very good, including the open faced turkey. The only downside is that it is a small restaurant and it is often difficult to get a table.

PROS: great roast beef
CONS: hard to get a table

Schwabl's Restaurant is located on Center Road, at Union. They are a very old established restaurant. They are a great place for lunch or dinner. They specialize in roast beef, known throughout the area for their meals. They have a very friendly wait staff, always willing to help out the patrons. Their prices are average, but well worth it. Their roast beef is slow cooked, served on salted rolls, people from all over the area come to enjoy their menu. Many types of soft drinks, tea, coffee and beer are available to complete your meal. Building is easily accessible, although parking can be tough. Plan on stopping early for a place to park.

I love this place for the food, the atmosphere and the general feeling you get when you walk in the door. It's located in very small, old house - so quarters are tight. When you walk in, you'll see the bar to your right, complete with a very old cash register, brass rails (for your elbows and feet) and a polished wood bar that's seen thousands and thousands of patrons. Their male employees are wearing shirt and tie under butcher jackets (those white jackets that tie) and their female employees are dressed in white tops/skirts/shoes - kinda reminds me of a nurses outfit. They have one person up front carving (a huge) roast beef continually - in fact he finished one off and started another while we were dining. The beef was just like I like it - rare (they ask what temp you'd like it). I had the Beef on Weck with a side of slaw and german potato salad ($10). I'd HIGHLY recommend the potato salad. We got a couple of appetizers (fried cheese and aged cheddar plate) - they were 'eh' at best. I would skip these and save room for ice cream at Antoinette's on the Hill just a few blocks away. I think this place is a must when visiting Buffalo.

Pros: beef, atmosphere, prices

Cons: small - so if you're in a group of more than about 6-8, you will not be able to sit together

Even though Schwabl's has been in the Buffalo area since 1887, its bygone tavern-like atmosphere makes it seem like time has stood still if not for the customers' decidedly 21st century duds, credit card machines, and neon signs in theā€¦
