Howe Caverns is a great destination for an adventure in learning lots of cool stuff about caves. Restaurants & gift shops complete the day, but the tour of the caverns is the star. Bring a jacket because it stays cool underground all year long.

We planned a weekend away that involved 2 field trips. One was to Howe Caverns. It was somewhat interesting, but quite honestly I would have been disappointed if this were the only reason we went to NY. Our tour guide was unique to say the least, but was quite obviously going straight from his memorized script. No ad-lib at all. Boat ride was fun. Gift shop and eating area was average. The best part was the absolute gorgeous view from the parking lot! Oh, and bring a light jacket...it gets chilly down in the depths!

Touring Howe Caverns is an interesting, educational experience the kids will enjoy. You take an elevator down, then walk along looking at the various cave features. Towards the end, you reach water and enter longboats for the rest of the tour. At one point, they shut the lights off so you can experience total darkness. Dress warm with a jacket or sweater, as it is consistently about 52 degrees year round, regardless of the temperature outside!

Howe Caves offers a wonderful, educational and memorable experience. You go on a guided tour of the caverns which includes a boat trip and special nooks that the kids love. I have yet to experience Halloween there but I hear that they have a special spooky tour of the Caverns for that. I'm waiting for the kids to be a little older. There is a lot of walking and the temperature I believe is steady 55 degrees so you need to remember a sweater. Howe Caves has been around a long time. I remember going when I was a kid and I enjoy sharing the experience with my own children.

PROS: memorable family trip
CONS: a lot of walking and cold temperature

If you are ever in the Catskills, take the time to visit Howe Caverns. It is a beautiful underground experience. You go down a long elevator ride and enter a boat. You get an extensive tour of the caverns with a history lesson about how the caverns have to be shared with a nearby attraction.

For the romantic there is a wedding chapel underground made completely out of stone.

At the gift shop you can break your own geode to bring home a beautiful treasure.

PROS: Informative and fun for older children.
CONS: Younger children may be bored.
