I took my american bulldog to Pet ER on thanksgiving and had to have her put down. It was a really sad day for me that was made easier by the people working there. They looked at my dog, told me that she was in liver failure and explained to me all of my options and the estimated costs. They were very patient with me (I asked 1 million questions!) and were very understanding of the emotional situation that I was going through. They treated me very well and if I am faced with an after hours emergency again with my other two dogs I will not hesitate to go back there.

What do you thinI USED to work at Pet's ER, I no longer work there but I still think it is great that they are open. They work their asses off to help poeple with the loved pets and it's a shame that so many people have issues with them. They are not only open to "take your money". Have you ever ran a bussiness? Do you know what it costs to run one or how much it costs to buy the expensive equiptment to save your animals life? Anesthesia machine, X-ray, Ultrasound, endoscopy, IV pumps, life saving drugs? All these things cost thousands of dollars, so yes you are going to be spending some money when you take your animal there. First I want to say that if you don't have money, maybe you shouldn't own an animal or maybe you should be prepared for emergency situations.
1. Reply to Sharon: There is no way in hell that they would send you dog home with an IV for you to give at home. They probably told you when you picked her up that morning to transfer her your regular vet, which in that case if you didn't and just took her home then that is your own fault.
2. Reply to Joan: I personally know all the Dr's there and NONE of them would do that to anyone. You're pet was probably dying on the table and they did all that they could ( starting emergency fluids, giving emergency drugs to keep the heart going, intubating to breath for her) and she just didn't make it. Don't blame people trying to help you.
3 Reply to Brian: They lock the door b/c they are open all night and you never know who might walk in.....hmmm someone crazy like you? Why in gods name would you spend thousands of dollars on sphinx kittens and have them shipped to you from CA. Do you know how many orphaned kittens are at the shelter? My guess is you probably got the kittens and then didn't take them to a vet for a physical to see if they were healthy. I am sorry to hear about your daughter but kittens are a whole different story and trying to relate the 2 just isn't working for ya. You shouldn't have gotten them if you couldn't afford them. Trust me, I know that one of those kittens is in much better hands now. When you sign an animal over to an animal hospital b/c you can't afford the bill, that animal doesn't get treated for "free". Whoever takes ownership of that animal has to pay the bill that you couldn't pay. One last thing, learn to type english please. Oh and please for the sake of every animal out there.....dont get anymore animals. k about Pets Er?

Seriously?...Pets ER in Salisbury has been nothing but caring and sympathetic during any of my visits, and the rest of my family. I have used them for 3 years for emergency services. To those of you complaining about the cost of treatment or no treatment because you don't have money...they don't claim to be a charity. Do you know what it would cost to have your vet come to the office for a midnight emergency appointment? Or even if your vet would let you make payments (as some do for long time customers) how long do you think it would take you to get them on the phone and into the office!
I didn't read all comments below but a couple stood out. Brian A, for those of us who are fortunate enough to have enough money to get started at Pets ER...where are we going to go when you "get rid" of them? I'm sorry for your entire situation which has added fuel to your fire but I think the tech was trying to help by offering to take your cat and save it at their own cost. And I have never had them come back out and offer treatment without me asking how much it will cost and them giving an estimate...it's then your decision on what to do...only you know what your financial capabilities are. They gave you an alternative solution out of kindness to your cat. I hope I listen to your friends radio show, I'd like to call in. By the way, did you contact the woman in CA that shipped you sick cats? She's the villain in this, not the tech that offered to save your cat.
Kaye W, one of Pets ER's policies is to send the treatment records to your vet that night. Your vet should have looked at that those and called you if he wasn't satisfied with what they did. And I know they do this...my vet has called me the next day to find out what happened because she got info from them she has concurred...they even sent the X-Rays. And she has never disagreed with what they've done...and her emergency number tells you to go the Annapolis ER because they are closer. I chose Salisbury because I was between the two and know where it is.
Joan W, I know I'm thinking about how much money I have, how much my family has to give me, all my options, while I'm driving to the ER. How long did you take to figure that out while your Champion was not breathing? The way you tell the story the vet must have been standing there with your bill in her hand while you signed the other paper. I don't believe things transpired the way you claim.
Sorry for the harshness of some of my statements.

Hello. I was just reading your story and I to have kind of the same situation. the er vet in salisbury refused treatment to my dying 5 year old boxer. They were well informed of his situation as he escaped from our yard and went missing for 4 days. The camden spca found him and called me due to he was microchipped. They gave me 72 hours to take him to vet due to his paw was injured and he was due for his rabies. So I took him to salisbury er vet but had as much money as they said i would need and tried to post dated a check, but they said no. Not even 2 1/2 weeks later my dog become so ill he stopped eating, drinking and couldn't stand. He lost about 20 lbs in less than a weeks time. Sadly to say he passed away on my fathers living room floor without any treament due to no one would see him without cash up front! I think it's so sad our beloved pets have to suffer over something like this.I Hope something good comes out of your story to save alot of people the heart ache of watching their beloved pets pass away in front of them knowing there was nothing else they could do. THANK YOU BRIAN A FOR YOUR STORY...

They charged me $400 for my dead dog!
I rushed my very lethargic non-responsive Champion Show dog to them & she took her last breath in the parking lot.
As I am crying my eyes out the assistant asks me if I want them to do anything to save her, of course I say yes. So she rushes her in the back & comes back out to hand me a paper asking how much I am willing to pay, I dont remember the exact options, but it was a very large difference from the middle amount & "Anything" so I did not fill it out right away. The vet came out & asked me if I filled the paper out & I told her I was willing to pay $500 to save her, but didnt want to pay over $1000. And she tells me "I can tell you now it will not be over $500" so I check the box saying I will pay anything & as soon as I sign the paper she tells me my dog is dead & hands me my bill.
It was just so obvious all she was worried about was getting the money, she was not concerned one bit that I was hysterically crying over my dead dog
I dont want to go on the radio, just wanted to share my displeasure with them as well

hi there, this will be another sad story to ad to the list of people who don't like the pets er in salisbury, my name is brian adams of delmar, i bought two spyhnx cats from a woman in california. she shipped to me and from day one i noticed something was wrong. i took them to pets er due to one look like it was about to die and the other did not look like it was going to make it much longer. they were very skinny and needed help. the fee just to walk thru their door is one hundred dollars thats just for the visit only. since i had two cats it was one hundred dollars each cat to make the bill 200 dollars . we have had alot of pain in our family as is my daughter of 10 died a month ago of cancer and my sister had just pasted away . i informed pets er about this and told them i would do what ever it takes to save these kittens with monthly payments. these cats are my life and all we have left. they told me with out cash there is nothin we can do. one of the ladies from the pets er came to me and told me that the one cat would not make it thru the night and asked if i would would sign the cat over to her so she could help it. so it was either watch my cat die or give it to the vet. so long story short i gave to the vet and now once again i lose a loved one. is this how america should work??? here is my email for all to email me with complaints rejectedpuppyhere@yahoo.com. i would like for everyone who has probloms with them to get in contact with me. i am going to get on my friends local radio show to tell my story about this. also i am going to start putting out some blogs to get people aware of whats going on. i will print out flyers if i have to and put on every car in maryland. who's with me.... i will start this weekend and with your help we just might get rid of the pets er.. look for us in local papers , everywhere you look i hope to have been there or on my way there. wont u help??? also let me say this, that the couple good reveiws on here must be from the pets er staff. who in their right mind would be happy walking up to a doorbell and ringing it for someone to come open it then soon as you step thru that door its 1 hundred dollars just for visit. lets go back to the locked door thing lol. why do you supose they lock the door. i think they done pissed so many people off that they fear for their safty. so once again come join me in this. lets get out there , lets tell our stories and get them out of our town.......................rejectedpuppyhere@yahoo.com wainting a few locals to help me speak on live radio.. will it be u.. i have one i need two more of you..

I took my cat to Pets ER on a Sunday when my vet was closed because he seemed very sick. They charged me $100 just to walk in the door..before any diagnosis was made. After some blood work, I was given two oral medications, which I was told were antibiotics. $358 later, I was out the door. I waited 5 days and when the medications were not helping, I took my cat to my vet. My vet said the one medication that was given was a pain killer, that was not necessary. His words were "they prescribe that all the time and it's not usually necessary". They even told me my cat was not in pain. I was livid when I found this out. After an antibiotic "shot", my cat was feeling better within 2 days...and it cost me 1/3 of what the Pets ER charged. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They prey on people who could more than likely wait an extra day to take their animal to the vet.

I will not live in a town where I cannot get my pets to a ER clinic, people should know that even sick and badly injured animal can find the will to react and could hurt a tec. or a much loved owned. When or if you are asked to leave the room during treatment of your pet it is for your best interest and your pets, it is hard for me to believe that any hospital would not let a client be with there pet in that final moment. I'm very proud to say I have worked in a animal hospital on the western shore for the past 10 years,I have learned more about love and caring by watching our tec and doctors.Julie

Back in September I bought a puppy, Reno, who ended up getting sick a week after I bought him. He was vomiting and had bloody diarrhea. I took him to Pets ER and they tested him for parvo which he tested positive for. It was a Sunday night and I was scared to death. They told me that I would have to pay $500.00 and however much more it would cost I would pay when I picked him up the next morning to take him to my regular vet. They hooked him up to fluids and I picked him up that Monday morning and took him to my regular vet. About 2 weeks ago my step son was giving our newest puppy Khloe which is 3 months old a bath and while he was getting a towel she drank straight up dog shampoo. I didn't know it at the time but found this out 3 hours later when she starting vomiting and couldn't even walk. I rushed her to the ER and they gave me medicine to help calm down the vomiting and to settle her stomach. This all happened on a Friday night. By Saturday morning she was fine and running around. This cost me $163.57.That next Sunday, 2 days after the ordeal with Khloe, I woke up that morning and found something was wrong with my other female Molly which is 2. She had something wrong with her eye, a red bubble is the best way to describe it. I thought it could have been Cherry eye since my 3 dogs are Cocker Spaniels but I'm no vet. I know Cocker's have alot of stuff that could be wrong with their eyes. Knowing this I thought the best thing for me to do was to take her to the ER to get it checked out. It was Cherry Eye and they gave me ointment to help with the inflammation. This also helped with getting the Cherry Eye taken off earlier by my regular vet. This cost me $164.76.Every time I take my babies to Pets ER I am treated with the most respect. The vet that saw Molly talked about how she was the prettiest Cockers she had ever seen and how she has the best personality. Her tail never stops. Pets ER is just like every other vet where you have some people say that don't like it and some that say they do. Personally, I love it and recommend it. When it's a weekend or evening where else are you going to go? You can't wait till the next morning and wonder if your baby is going to make it. It may cost alot of money, more than what some people can afford but if you have an animal it is your responsibility to make sure that animal has the best care available. To me my babies are priceless and if it costs me $5,000.00 I don't care. It is my obligation to take care of them.

They charged over $500 and didn't give my pet the care it desereved. My pet was brought in for a life threatening situation and all they cared about was their money! My pet was not fully treated for the conditions he had and they allowed a student to work with my distressed animal who called animal control on my pet for a natural animal reaction to being poked and proded by an inexperienced person. I did not give consent for any unlicensed person to be handling my pet and don't appreciate having to deal with animal control and the health dept. while my pet was fighting for it's life! Please don't make this mistake with your pet!!

I have used the Pet ER in Salisbury more than 4 times. I guess my animals like it better there because they only get hurt on the weekends and evenings ;). I have had nothing but professional interactions with the people at Pet ER. your not there to be cured you there to have your pet stable until your regular vet is able to see them. Yes it is more expensive but your there because you care about your animal and want them to stay around. I will continue to use the Pet ER... as long as my vet is closed.
IF you want to complain to anyone, talk to your vet for being closed so much. My vet seems to think they work at a bank and is closed all the time.
THANK YOU TO PET ER!

First of all i would like to say that i DO NOT work at PETS ER, but i was a ER vet tech in MD and now in FL, i would like to comment and give a first impression on some common things about animal ER
1st.- POILICY is POLICY they are there for "our" vet tech's and owners safety!!!
*** I have personally been acted by a Lab that was very very sick b/c the owners wanted use to "put to sleep there beloved pet in the car. NOT SAFE TO DO THIS*
2nd- When you sign over your pet, that pet is no longer yours. it is property of who ever you signed that pet over to. It is just like a child given up for adoption, they can not tell you, and they may not know where your pet is, Pets are placed with families or with adoption agencies, you can not re-locate your pet. Sorry, if u are un-fit (sorry for the harsh statement) to pay for you pets health, you should not own a pet.
3rd- you are going to wait. period end of statement. It is a ER "the sicker the quicker" thats the saying, the pets that are dying or "worse" then your pet are seen first, if u are next in line, or in a waiting room getting ready to been seen and a HBC(hit by car) comes in, sorry, your wait just got a little longer, just like human ER's if u got the flu, and a Accented victim comes in, u are going to be waiting even longer. get over it!
4th- its an ER, its going to be more money, we use drugs, machines, lab work, and all around more expensive tools to treat your pet, so its going to be more money again GET OVER IT, if u can not afford a pet, do not own one. Sorry

It is funny that the two excellent reviews are anonymous ones. Could it be that they work at Pets ER? I brought my dog there and they did not diagnose his problem correctly and they charged a fortune. I had to take my dog to Annapolis for him to recover. Pets ER has people over a barrel because they are the only game in town when the other vets are closed.

Why are people giving Pet's ER a bad name? People should thank them for being open when regular vets are closed. Without their convenient service many animals would be dead (animal attack, hit by car, heart failure, etc.)
Ive read that they have no compassion and so on, but if these people didnt love and care for animals they wouldnt be in that line of work, theyre there for a reason. Ive worked at a vet before and have taken 2 of my animals there and had great experiences and feel they deserve more than one side of the story.
When they didnt come to the car to put a dog to sleep, people have to understand techs at many vets have gotten bit while handling animals in vehicles. Animals in their territory have potential to be defensive and aggressive. Some may be fine, but you cant bend rules for some and not others. At my vet, a same situation happened, a couple wanted their dog put to sleep in the car, they said she never bit anyone before, she looked sick and could barely move but when the tech opened the car door and went towards the dog she was bitten very badly and went to the hospital. Because of these situations many vets made it their "policy" to not go in vehicles. It's for safety of the workers!
About owners present while treatment is done such as an I.V. catheter put in, most regular vets will not do this in front of the owner either. Techs have gotten bit in this process but also many owners dont want to see their animal stuck with a needle and yet more owners couldnt handle seeing any blood that may be present. My cat was also a put to sleep at Pets ER and needed an I.V. catheter placed and it took them all of 5 mins. I could spare those 5 mins so those people could do their job without any interference. If their back room is similar, thats where everything takes place. Thats where their equipment is, X-ray room, surgery room, treatment tables and hospitalized animals. That room needs to be as sterile and controlled as possible. Back rooms in vets are very chaotic with hit by cars, seizing animals, attacked animals; vomiting animals, animals with bloody diarrhea... you name it its there! Doctors and staff need to work quickly on animals coming in and also the animals in cages with little interference.
With responsibility of owning an animal comes the responsibility of paying for them. If you cant afford them you shouldnt have them. Things like parvo are preventable by vaccines. Parvo is a serious and fast acting issue that can kill a dog quickly. If shots are given the odds of a dog getting parvo obviously decreases greatly. She had some options... put the dog down, pay for treatment or sign the dog over and he lives. What else could you ask for? If the vaccinations were given like they were suppose to, he probably wouldnt have gotten parvo. The shots are much cheaper than the treatment! At least the dog is still alive! Payments for services have to be paid when the services are given, it's ridiculous to try to pay and get a dog after you sign him over. Any ER (animal or human) is expensive. If you go in the ER in PRMC you better expect to pay like $200 for walking in. And if you sign a child over for adoption you dont get that child back! I personally put an animal to sleep at Pet's ER and was given all the time in the world to make that decision so its hard to believe that a tough decision like that had to be made "right away".
I think Pet's ER was a much needed place in Salisbury and they do what they can to save animals but pet owners have to expect to pay for service or there wont be any money going in to run the place.

This was my review which I posted anonymously because I didn't think my name up there was important but apparently it is because now ignorant people are trying to say simply because my review was a good one that I work there. Well your wrong my friend I do not. By the way I have never been to a human ER PRMC or AGH where I was satisfied with my visit or my family members visit. ER's whether they are for humans or animals are busy and waits are a normal occurrence, as well as being more expensive than a regular doctor or vet visit. My grandmother has seen numerous doctors and still not been diagnosed with whats wrong and we have spent lots of time and money, yet we do not go around disrespecting degrading or disrespecting them. If you don't want to spend money on your animal then you don't need to have one. You think the price of things on the Eastern Shore is high, trying going across the bridge. My dog has had surgery at CVRC in Annapolis and it cost a great deal of money which I spent because I love my pets and want them to be healthy. I posted this with my name this time so that you could realize that I gave a good review and no I don't work there. And if you weren't so oblivious you would see there are actually four good reviews and only two of those were anonymous and now only one is anonymous. Thank you.I came to this sight and was shocked an appalled at the information that was given about Pet's ER in Salisbury. There are 5 people that obviously feel as if their visit to this ER was very awful . Only one side of each story is told and maybe that is the whole truth but who knows it also may not be the truth. I have personally been to the ER several times for emergency's. My times at the ER have always been wonderful. The staff has always been friendly and helpful and have saved the lives of my beloved animals more than once. I want to say thank you to them for a job well done. It is a shame that people only come to this site to say awful things. I am grateful for the wonderful services that they have provided to me and my animals in the past and will always return there if any of my beloved family members (pets) is ever ill and in need of Dr.s care.

Today my husband and I made the extremely difficult decision to put our dog to sleep after watching her suffer for the last week. Unfortunately, the local vets that we usually deal with were not available on a Sunday. All of the answering services referred us to Pets ER in Salisbury. We felt we had no choice because our dog was in such bad shape, so we headed for Salisbury.
When we arrived, we asked if they could come out to the car to put Abby to sleep so we wouldnt have to move her or put her in a state of alarm. They said, No, it is against our policy. So, my husband and I brought her inside where (after looking in every room for somebody) they told us to put her on their examining table. They then asked us to leave while they put in a catheter. We did not want to leave. We wanted to be with her and comfort her and told them so. The person we were dealing with said that it was against their policy for us to be there while they put a catheter in because some of their technicians had been bitten. Keep in mind that Abby could barely hold her head up and that my husband and I were both there to hold her. This person also said if we didnt like the policy we were free to take our dog somewhere else. After much debate back and forth, our dog being so weak and sick we felt we were stuck. We left Abby alone on a cold metal table in her dying moments so their policy could be followed. We pleaded for a little compassion and flexibility but it went right over their head. They just didnt get it.
If you care for your animal and if you are looking for compassion in an already stressful and sad situation, you should not go to Pets ER in Salisbury. Not only were they cold, inflexible, and difficult, but they also charged us $148.00 to put our sweet dog to sleep. $100 of the charge was for an examination / consultation fee. Obviously, there wasnt an examination or a consultation. We came in the door asking for what we wanted. I will never take any animal to Pets ER again.

My sister, Ashley recently took her puppy Bailey, a 7 month old male pit bull to Pets ER. Bailey was diagnosed with parvo. The vet gave her three option;s put the dog down, sign the dog over to the ER or provide a substantial amount of money that night. The vet told her she had to pay $500 and leave five post dated $100 checks. As you can imagine, Ashley was very distraught and unsure of what the right decision was for Bailey. The vet insisted that Ashley make a decision right away and did not give her the chance to even call and consult with family members. The papers to sign Bailey over weren't even signed by her as the Bailey's rightful owner. Ashley has been trying to get the dog back (willing to pay whatever amount of money that was spent on Bailey for the treatment) since the night that she took her dog to Pets Er. They will not tell her where Bailey is or even if the he is still alive. This vet did not even had compassion for Bailey; instead sharing with Ashley personal aspects of her life. This ER took advantage of a young adult and her dog. Ashley loves Bailey as he goes everywhere with her and she is at a great loss without him. Bailey is very much wanted by our family.Bailey if you are still out there WE LOVE YOU AND WANT YOU TO COME HOME!

I called my family Vet,a machine message said to call Pet ER.Called pet Er,they said it could be a 6+ hour waiting time for them to see her(Katelynn)(8 yo Golden Retriver),I must of called every Vet's office in the Phone book trying to locate a doctor to see my baby girl,I told my wife we can't get our family Vet who said he would always be there for us and Pet ER was our only hope,I put my baby girl in the back set and took her to pet ER,they took her right in but it was to late to save her, they were very considerate about the whole thing, people there are wonderful.I do feel she may have had a chance if our regular Vet had kept his word and seen her a day early(this is on his shoulders).Dr Katie B is a sweetheart and my advice is don't call them to be told there is a waiting time, JUST GO to Pet ER, when you can't get your family Vet(most of the time).Pet ER is a God sent and thank you Kate B for all you did trying to save my baby girl (Katelynn). When there is a waiting list the family Vet should be able to be reached within half an hour.I let my little girl(Katelynn) down by not having a concerned family Vet,but Pet ER did all they could to save her and showed compassion.I will always use this service but get there sooner.I lost a family member that night but would like to think Pet ER did their best to save her(not sure).I did talk to regular Vet and he did say the ER should have taken X-Rays to find the problem before putting her down. For 400 bucks for 2 hours working on her,it seems X-Rays should have been done. I have talked to 3 Vet schools and 4 different Vets, they seem to think Pet ER could have saved Katelynn's life if the the correct medication and X-rays had been used over a 12 hour schedule. KATELYNN LOST HER LIFE,I LOST KATELYNN AND MONEY,THE ONLY ONE THAT MADE OUT WAS THE DOCTOR'S,MONEY WENT INTO THEIR ACCOUNT AND A DEAD KATELYNN WENT HOME WITH ME.WHY IS IT A DOCTOR CAN FAIL(FOR PEOPLE AND ANIMALS AND STILL GET PAID)
PROS: It's good tohave place like Pet ER to help the helpless if you have money.
CONS: Family Vet's needs to be on call when ER is packed,NO X-RAYS Vet GAVE UP.

I recently had a pet emergency, my cat had a urinary tract blockage. I thought it could wait. By Sunday night, he was laying IN the litter box and howling like a dog. I knew something had to be done but his regular vet was closed. I called anyways, and the recording said that I should call Pet E.R. in Salisbury which is about 20 mins away. I called, stated my pets symptoms & they said I should bring him right in, ASAP. I did, and thank goodness, it was a life threatening problem that could have killed my cat in a matter of just a couple days! My thanks goes out to all the employees of Pet E.R. for your outstanding service to your community, and it's pets!
PROS: Need I say more, Pet E.R. Rocks!!!
CONS: As with any E.R., be ready to drop some cash.
