Low quality

by Deborah W. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,969

My office used to be near Blue Bonnet, so we would reluctantly go there on occasion. The food's not great; it's cheap Mexican food (I use the term loosely - nowhere close to authentic). You have to guess the kitchen is mainly equipped with microwaves and can openers. However, it has a convenient location, and a fun atmosphere.

Good food...but average service

by Rajeev M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 534

This restaurant is a nice place to go for a large gathering of people. The place is really loud and thus doesn't work for a nicer dinner. The food was great but the service was very average. The margaritas are good, but certainly don't compare to many other places. Overall, a good place for a quick, casual meal, but I would plan somewhere else if you are looking for something nicer.

Just Another Mexican Restaurant

by Liz L.

For us, it was just another medicore Mexican restaurant. It was an overcrowded restaurant with good service and food that was ordinary. You can get the same food at any chain mexican restaurant in Denver. The price is comparable to other mexican restaurants so don't travel downtown just for this one.

Best burritos & margaritas in town!

by bert p. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,396

The Denver area has too many uninspired Mexican restaurants. The Bluebonnet is different - the food is not only spicy but tasty. From the chips and salsa to all the kinds of burritos, you won't be disappointed. Plus, if you like margaritas, ya gotta try theirs.

PROS: reasonable prices, patio available during warm weather
CONS: sometimes lonf wait during busy times

Margaritas, and the decline of Western Civilization.

by Stickler

Warned by a friend that the food at The Blue Bonnet was a joke, off we went to this former landmark anyway. The food was amusing, but the house margarita was hilarious. If this is a Margarita, then I?m the the King of Pop. The drink was a massacre, Sand Creek on the Platte. I thought I?d stumbled into Tony?s Meats by accident, given the butcher job here. I mean, it was OFFAL! If there were a margarita board of ethics, Blue Bonnet would be subpoenaed daily. No Nectar of the Gods here; this green swill tasted more like the Antichrist, straight out of Linda Blair?s mouth. (Sorry). My point is, though: This really ISN?T a margarita, by definition. NOT EVEN CLOSE!! FACT: Margarita, invented in 1948 in Acapulco by Margarita Sames. Mixed to order; 1) a generous portion of fine white tequila, (50%), 2) a splash of fresh lime (25%), 3) a float of Couintreau (25%). Obviously, some subtle variations have evolved; i.e., substituting Grand Marnier or triple sec for Couintreau (still orange liqueurs), maybe a splash of fresh orange or lemon juice, or using a darker tequila, all good. Now when you throw in gender and sexual-orientation issues, (not that there?s anything wrong with that) you get out of my realm of interest. But if you do ask for a fruity drink, that?s what you should get. And if you order a real margarita, THAT?S what you should get. So what did I get? I guarantee you there was no fresh juice in there, probably industrial sour mix concentrate instead. Nor any liqueur even resembling Couintreau, more likely sugar, MAYBE orange zest. Hopefully they sprinkle in a little tequila although I really couldn?t taste it. $CHA-CHING, BABY$. If you want to get technical, and I do, what we have here tastes more like a tequila sour or a cheap tequila daiquiri than a margarita. IF IT LOOKS LIKE A DUCK AND IT QUACKS LIKE A DUCK, THEN IT?S A DUCK! I couldn?t get away with this kind of deception in my business for a minute, let alone decades. Unfortunately, we?ll never really know for sure, because at the Bonnet, you can?t watch the bartender mix your house margarita from scratch like in a professional restaurant. Here, THEY JUST SHOOT THIS CRUD OUT OF A HOSE, LIKE DOWN ON SOME FEED LOT IN FORT MORGAN! Makes you feel special. Ok, so WHERE does this stuff come from, then, since it?s not hand-mixed to order behind a bar? Is it delivered in tanks from companies like Coca-Cola or Seagram?s? Or do they cook it up in some clandestine lab somewhere, like meth? Maybe a big, tattooed guy named Tiny with black engineering boots, a bad case of dandruff, no hairnet, and a penchant for revenge on the public. Who knows? Why the hell doesn?t this place just get it over with and run a couple of troughs out through the dining room. One for the amusing slop, the other for the hilarious swill. That way, the hapless cattle that graze on this fraudulent stuff could just line up and load up. Easier for all concerned. Truth is, though, this kind of mediocre B.S. really needs to fade into the sunset and find its eternal resting place down in the tar pits. And while we?re at it, can I toss in our dinosaur of a waitress here? Talk about hostile body language. I was SURE this old battle-ax was going to attack me bad even BEFORE I started to open my mouth to joke about the $1.50 charge for the salsa. Guess she?s heard it all before..... No crime here, though. The place gets away with murder every day. Just ask my ?margarita?.

Pros: I didn't meet any here.

Cons: Talked to plenty of them.

How does this place stay in business?

by peachburrito

Quite honestly, I have absolutely no clue how this place stays in business or how it manages to get good reviews in the newspaper! I have been there a total of three times over the years, primarily because other people wanted to go there. The first time I went there, I found it to be marginal, nothing special. The other times were poor. The food is obviously not made to order and it reheated by microwave. The last time I went was decidedly the worst.
The service is awful, the drinks are not made to order. Save your money. Do not eat dinner here.

Pros: ZERO!

Cons: Awful food,margaritas, service.

wish it were better

by alcatrez

Very mediocre, which is unfortunate because its right in my new neighborhood and I consume alot of mexican food and drink. Industrial style food and beverage prep makes for a disappointing product which grows old quickly, both literally and figuratively. ( Seriously, margaritas on tap? ) Theres nothing better than a freshly mixed margarita, and sadly, The Blue Bonnet mass produces theirs, and the taste reflects that fact. The service was ok. I ate at the bar and noticed the customers that the bartenders seemed to be familiar with (regulars, I guess) got much better treatment than the average Joe, with complimentary drinks and chips, etc. I'd hang out more if the food and drink were any good, although the atmosphere, which seemed fun at first, also grew old fast with all the young children running around. No thanks.Way overpriced as well.

Pros: Colorful atmosphere, good for kids

Cons: mass-produced product, uncomfortable atmosphere for adults

gastronomical trainwreck

by emersongoodfood

Both of my experiences at the Blue Bonnet Cafe were really bad. This place is a chamber of culinary horrors. The salsa is runny, the chips are stale, the piles of half-melted yellow cheese left me bloated and uncomfortable, the green chile is red and runny, with fatty and gristly pork remnants, not lean like other places in the neighborhood. The margaritas were watery and bland. It's almost like W and Cheney were cooking the food and Condie was behind the bar, mixing the margs. It's that bad. Yechh....

Pros: Parking

Cons: Food, margaritas

You people are crazy...this place is great!

by MoRockaDenver

If you're looking for a gourmet mexican restaurant...go somewhere else. But if you're looking for great margaritas, food, service, and a place to eat without spend an arm and a leg, go here! Someone on this site complained that the bartenders don't use triple sec in their margaritas...who cares! Their margs are good, potent, and...wait, do you really need anything else? The bar and wait staff are the friendliest around...very social and make you feel welcome. The food comes out quickly and no, it's not gourmet, but you wouldn't expect that here. It's great food in a casual, welcoming atmosphere. That's that! A local diamond in the rough, I chalk it up to one of the better mexican restaurants in SW Denver. And no, I don't work for the restaurant....I'm just a fan :)

Pros: Ambience, service, drinks, food, price

Cons: parking, often crowded

Eyes wide open

by knishboy

I got dragged back in here recently. This joint?s been around for awhile but then, so have I. Although I no longer patronize the place, I remember the days when they?d use turkey in the chicken items to make a few extra pennies. Not too long ago, actually. Quite a long and storied history of nickel and diming. They charge for chips and salsa. And unless things have changed recently, this is the only bar/ restaurant, Mexican or otherwise, that I?ve EVER been to or even heard of ANYWHERE that doesn?t use triple sec or a similar liqueur in their margaritas. So technically, unless you special order, THE BLUE BONNET DOESN?T EVEN SERVE MARGARITAS. WITHOUT TRIPLE SEC, IT?S CALLED A TEQUILA SOUR. That?s some serious chutzpah. I imagine they?ve netted quite a haul on this caper over the decades. We?re not talking about nickels and dimes, either. Do the math. I used to think it was kind of funny, part of the show. No mas. Too expensive these days for this kind of stuff. Really burns me up. Now I see they offer gluten- free items. Gluten-free? In a Mexican restaurant? Gimme a break. I have never seen one gluten-free item anywhere in Mexico. If health food is the objective, look elsewhere, my friend, because it ain?t happening here. Talk about trying to starve a dead horse. Besides the sheer volume of grease in the food, there are probably enough preservatives in one pre-made batch of Blue Bonnet tequila sour/margaritas to give King Tut a little rise. One or two gluten-free tortillas isn?t going to offset that. Just look at the ingredients that any cheap, wholesale sweet and sour mix contains. Bend over, Denver and get out the KY jelly. Order up another $8.90 tequila sour, and enjoy the ride. I?m talkin? about service with a smile. If the shaft is what you?re looking for, this establishment will be happy to give it to you. They?ve been doing it for decades, but now you can get it gluten-free. PULL-EASE!!!

Pros: not too crowded anymore

Cons: nickel and dime shenanigans

That not so fresh feeling

by rhodahenry

The old marketing adage states ?You don?t sell the steak, you sell the sizzle.? Well said for many types of businesses, but unfortunately for the Blue Bonnet Cafe, restaurants actually do sell the steak. This place reminds me of a Denny?s menu; where the pictures of the food look great but the actual product is another story altogether. After eating at the Blue Bonnet several times over many years, I?ve finally realized one thing. It just isn?t any good. The menu is extensive and everything sounds great, but the food tastes as if it was prepared in bulk earlier and reheated, cooled, reheated etc. as needed. It tastes stale. Even the margaritas taste like they have been sitting around for awhile before they are served, apparently out of a tank somewhere in the building and pumped through a hose to the bar, and then finally shot out of a gun or something. Quite a journey. If they had saved a little of the energy it must have taken to develop the elaborate menus and drink lists and put it into actually serving a fresh, consistent product, this place might be worth another shot. I prefer eateries that may only offer a limited number of items, but they do those items consistently well, and concentrate on freshness. Blue Bonnet seems to want to do way too many things, and puts quality on the back burner. It?s just not worth that bloated uncomfortable feeling you leave with after ingesting all that yellow cheese and recycled steam-table grease. Thanks anyway.

Pros: alot of sizzle

Cons: no steak

Great service, chilled out atmosphere & decent food

by bananny

A friend of mine & I stopped in for lunch today. Our water came quick, our chips & salsa soon after & then our drinks. I wasn't into having alcohol today, so I sampled a strawberry limeade. It tasted kinda funky, not bad, just not good. The busser came by and filled our salsa dishes and continued to top off our waters before they had a chance to go empty. That was a bonus! At most Mexican restaurants I've eaten at it is difficult to get a refill on chips & salsa and sometimes even harder to get water refills. Nice job Blue Bonnet! Now, for our lunch. It was tasty although a little tough as if it sat under a heat lamp for a little while before coming out. I had a chile relleno & a cheese enchilada. It was a 3 star meal. Not the best I've ever had, but not the worst either. I have eaten at this establishment a couple times before this and usually get the same experience. Not a bad choice if you're in the area and Blue Bonnet's location is a matter of convenience. But, if you're trying to pick the best Mexican food in Denver, this isn't it.

Pros: Great service! Quick, friendly & our water & salsa never went empty

Cons: Average food. Nothing spectacular. It wasn't bad, just not anything to rave about.

third rate

by nohuckleberry

My margarita was not so good and when I noticed the bartender was squirting them out of a soda gun like a soft drink, I just about s%@t! You could throw a monkey back there to do that. Plus, who knows when or where these margaritas were actually made and by whom; or what was (or wasn?t) in that drink. I wonder if anyone ever even bothers to ask. Talk about a compromised, if not potentially adulterated product. What a crock of hooey! For the prices this place charges and the level of quality they claim, they should be hand-crafting their cocktails up-front like a real restaurant, especially their signature item. Everyone I?ve mentioned this to agrees. VERY MINOR LEAGUE!!! I can?t comment on the food because I decided not to eat. I figured if a Mexican restaurant won?t even mix a margarita to order, who knows what shortcuts are going on in the food prep department. Caveat emptor.

Pros: Can't think of any

Cons: minor league

I love going here, they have the best Chili Rellenos in town!!! The nice crispy ones, not the soggy tasteless ones you find in a lot of places. I love their salsa and chips that everyone gets to start the meals!!! And they also make a mean Strawberry Daqueri

Gone corporate?

by bataan

I used to frequent this place when i lived in the neighborhood. Being back in Denver recently, I stopped in for a little nostalgia. What a mistake! What I remember as being a fun, cheap neighborhood joint has somehow evolved into a gay Chile's or Chevy's, complete with the obligatory tootie-fruitty drink lists and prices to match. The food hasn't improved and the decor is downright strange. The service used to be friendly and personal, but I didn't see that this time. Another one bites the dust.

Pros: Parking

Cons: Just about everything else

Into each life must come one meal far worse than all the others, a meal that makes you wonder not only how such a meal could exist, but why? A ?White Whale? of a meal, if you will. Well, I saw my White Whale when a friend took me to the Blue Bonnet Cafe for a celebratory dinner. I asked the waitperson for a pre-dinner margarita, specifying my favorite tequila. I was anticipating a delicious concoction of high quality tequila, orange liqueur, and lemon/lime. Being somewhat of a tequila aficionado and very familiar with the distinct flavor of the expensive 100 % blue agave silver brand that I had requested, I noticed immediately that my drink was not what I had ordered. After some discreet inquiries, I learned that my preferred tequila had been poured on top of the house margarita and then presented to me as if it were the drink I had ordered. This house margarita contained cheap mass produced gold tequila and was not even close to what I ordered. In addition, I learned that there was no orange liqueur (triple sec, countreau, etc.) in the margarita. I wouldn?t even consider this a margarita. It?s like serving a Chicago Dog without mustard and then throwing on some chili and cheese, except that the only possible reason for serving this altered margarita is to save money, and that the average customer doesn?t notice. The restaurant actually gets away with this on a regular basis. I personally consider it false advertising. However, in order not to embarrass my dining companion, who was paying and is much less discerning than me, I kept quiet and finished the meal. Needless to say, a meal to remember and one I won?t repeat.

Pros: I don't have to go back

Cons: I went there

Worst Gringo-Mex EVER!!!!

by zgastronomist

I have no idea how this place has so many good reviews it has to be the WORST mexican food I have EVER had!?!?!?! This place is straight gringo mex the motto is "oh we have bland tasteless food. Ok load it up with cheese maybe that will make it taste better." Sorry that didn't work it is still revolting! The chips and salsa were bad, a step above pace picante the margaritas had no alcohol and were all marg syrup. The dishes were totally bland and you literally had to chisel thru the 3 layers of cheese just to get to it. I had fajitas and they were dry and tasteless. I ask you; HOW DO YOU SCREW UP FAJITAS, all you need is lime, cilantro and a few spices and then don't over cook them!?!?! Do not waste your money Taco Bell probably has more flavor than this place.

Pros: Nothing at all

Cons: Food, Margaritas, Service, Atmosphere (This place is AWFUL!)

I payed for this?

by hartaco

If it wasn't for the entertainment value I received from this mediocre meal, I would be disappointed. The enchiladas I ordered were so lacking in substance, literally, that it was almost funny. "Where's the beef?" would be a serious understatement. "Where's the triple sec?" would also be an appropriate question here because there was none in the margarita I ordered. Unbelievable that a Mexican restaurant in this state would have the gall to serve a margarita with no triple sec or comparable substitute. Sugar water doesn't cut it. The whole experience was so cheesy that it was almost funny. I half expected the server to try and sell me a used car for dessert. I mean, how much profit can you squeeze out of an enchilada, for God's sake. Get real.

Pros: entertainment value

Cons: entertainment value

A Mexican Chuck E Cheese!!!

by jburdi1

Our kids love this joint. Plenty of video games and machines for them to plug their (our) quarters into and keep them busy while we enjoy ourselves. They love the jukebox and also the wall in the bar area with the goofy looking cut-outs of funny looking people (clowns, I guess) hanging on it. They constantly nag us to "go see the freak show circus at the boo bonnet!" So if you want to keep the kids occupied while you eat Mexican food and drink margaritas, try this cafe.

Pros: Kids love it

Cons: average food

Not as great (or as bad) as some say

by sholdeman

I've lived in Denver for over 10 years - the Blue Bonnet has been a staple for decent Mexican food since the first day I arrived. I've had good experiences as well as poor. The food is definitely not great by any stretch - however, it is American/Mexican comfort food. The chips and salsa are far above average and I often get them for take out. The menu - typical Burritos, tacos, enchiladas, rellenos all taste sort of the same (which is not entirely a bad thing) - but again nothing spectacular. The Margs are usually quite good, but I've had bad ones too. To say this is great Mexican is a stretch at best -- to say the food is horrible is not fair (on most days). I'll continue to go back, but it is never at the top of my personal list when I'm thinking of Mexican joints.

Pros: chips & salsa

Cons: inconsistant

yikes!!!

by mjoott

I knew we were in for it before we even got seated. The panhandler at the front entrance and the rude host who's English was about at the same level as his manners were only a preview of the disappointing meal we were about to experience.
The food itself was about as authentic as that place on West Colfax that has cliff divers and serves cafeteria style food. It came to the table lukewarm and the cheese inside the relleno was not even melted. My margarita was tasteless, while my husband's was so strong that he made me drive home. A little consistency and attention goes a long way, folks.
The server that we had was at the table just enough to get the job done. It was apparent that he had more tables than he could handle effectively.
In short, save your money and your time and either stay home or go someplace that pays a little more attention to details.

Pros: convenient parking

Worst Service

by konahawaii1463

The moment I walked into the Blue Bonnet I just knew it was going to be a bad experience. The person who directed me to my table didnt even say hello or ask how I was. When I got to the table, I waited 10-15 minutes for a server to come the table. When the server finally came around, she took my drink order and didnt come back with the drinks for another 5-10 minutes. She came back with the drinks and took my food order, yet again I waited almost an hour to get my food! Overall the service had to be the worst Ive ever had! I would not recommend the Blue Bonnet due to the service!

Pros: Better refills on the salsa than my drink!

Cons: The service for sure!

And the band played on

by victorhenry

My experience @ the Blue Bonnet was not good. The food was average and when the waitress told me that the Patron margarita I ordered was really not made with Patron tequilla, that did it for me. Apparently, the margaritas are pre-mixed with a basic house tequilla and then they add the call tequilla to the house mixture. The bottom line is, when you order a premium margarita, you actually get a mixture of well liquor and call liquor. Seems fraudulant to me . I wont go back.

Pros: nice servers

Cons: margaritas

Great Customer Service and Spicy Eats

After living in Denver for my whole life, I decided to try the Blue Bonnet, a place I often hear about. The experience was wonderful. My party and I were seated promptly and the bus boys kept refilling our chips all throughout dinner. This place is family owned and it has a very warm feeling when you walk in the door. No breakfast at Tiffany's

by reggy

Is this place for real? As for the food, the combination platter which I ordered invoked visions of a Darwinian catastrophe, with totally indistinguishable items floating in what looked like some type of primordial soup(green chile and cheese?). One bolt of lightning and this plate could have sprouted legs
As for the room where we ?dined?, this loud, irritating atmosphere certainly did nothing to stimulate any desire to eat the mess which was brought to the table. Caligula might have enjoyed this carnival-like setting, but we did not. Directly on our left, two inebriated ?gentleman? emanated not only a steady stream of foul language, but also an unpleasant overripe odor reminiscent of a late night bus ride I took on Colfax after a Black Sabbath concert in the 70s.
And coincidentally, Ozzie Osborn?s non-melodious ranting which blared from the juke box did nothing to enhance our experience. Throw in a steady stream of screaming children and a noisy pre-season football game on the nearby television,(all happening continuously and simultaneously), and I think you get the irritating picture.
The salsa was good.

Pros: Salsa

Cons: food, ambience

The Blue Bonnet has outlived its Reputation!

by foodsnobdave

Since 1995 I have been sampling a wide variety of Mexican & TexMex Restaurants in Denver. The BB is known for it's award winning Mexican food, but those awards are from years gone by. I have had Burritos at the BB with a cold center and have never been thrilled about any meal I have eaten there. Las Delicious is far better for the eating experience!

Great Value and Great Service

by csbecker

This is the best mexican restaurant in town for me. We have been going there for 20 years and always have a great experience. Thats probably because the owners are always walking around asking if everything is great and taking care of any problems. I always take our out of town guests here and meet our old college buddies there.

soooo bad

by uncledave

I have been here on numerous occasions at the insistent of some of their loyal customers and have always been disappointed. Having grown up in the Southwest I love Mexican food but there is nothing Mexican about the food here. The food is bland and swimming in flavorless sauces. This is one of those places that continues to pack 'em in though and I just don't get it. Even Benny's, which is mediocre, is better. Better yet, try a real Mexican restaurant like El Taco de Mexico, Tacos Jaliscos, Los Carboncitos, Rosalinda's, Jack 'n Grill - soooo many choices, so many so much better.

Great Margs, Good food.

by miko13

Take a chance and spend the extra $ on an upscale tequilla with Grand Marnier!!!
Chips and salsa flow freely, so, you will be filled up. The food will take you longer to order than it will take to get to your table. Staff is great. If it is crowded, take whatever they give you. There's really no ambiance here, unless it's a nice day, and you want to wait for a patio table. The patio still sits between a parking lot and Broadway Blvd. They will not sit groups without everyone present during busy times, so tell your frinds to be on time.
It's a cafe, but I like to think of it as my little dive. I mean that in the best sense of the word. Clean, and straight to the point.
Drink up.

Pros: Margs and Staff

Cons: Crowded at busy times

going downhill

by chiliman

I have eaten at Blue Bonnet several times in the past. Each time I keep going there the quality of their food has gone downhill. If your in the mood for a spicy authentic green chili this is not the place for you. I do have to say though, they still have some of the best table salsa arround. The actual dinner plates have gone down in quality. If I do decide to return here it will be for a quick couple of drinks and the chips and salsa

Pros: good variety of drinks, great table salsa

Cons: dinner plates have gone down in quality

Just okay-Benny's is better

by cornhuskergirl

Okay, so right off the bat we have to pay for our chips and salsa which kind of annoys me. That's what I go to Mexican restaurants for, the free chips and salsa. And the waiter doesn't really even ask, just sets them down. I had the chicken quesadillas which were awful (I don't know how you can screw that up), and my husband had something (don't remember what) that he thought was pretty good. Overall, not worth all the hype.

Pros: Salsa

Cons: Pay for chips/salsa

Very good for what it is

by tubetote

Well...a lot of folks here complain about this restaurant not being authentic. This is true, the food is an Americanized version of Mexican (also true with about 90% of the Mexican restaurants in Denver). For what it is, however, I give the Bonnet a thumbs up. For a very reasonable price, you get a great meal. The atmosphere could use a little work; it's about as casual as it gets. I have eaten there many times, and have generally recieved fast and friendly service (don't order to-go from here, it's their weakness). Chips and salsa are spicy and excellent. Very good shredded beef. Great rellenos and tacos. It's very much a family place, so expect to be in that environment. If you want authentic (which I am also a huge fan of), you may need to try New Mexico or Arizona...have not yet found a good one in Denver.

Pros: Inexpensive, Good Food, Great Service

Cons: Non-authentic, A bit dingy, Bad to-go service

A mexican food squat and gobble

by malydick

Went there with 2 friends - very negative experience. We did not order more drinks after eating our dinner, just ordered some dessert, when the manager came and told us to move to a smaller table as he had people who needed our table. The place was half full, and one in our party uses a cane so moving was pretty inconvenient, especially since we just ordered our dessert. We assume since we were on the patio at the "premium tables" and not ordering more drinks, we were targeted to move. We told him we would not move, we would be leaving. The food and drink are average and not worth that kind of inhospitality. Will not be returning or recommending the place.

have loved this place for 10+ years!

by bpetracek

People who love it think the food is great. You aren't going to get fancy food there, it's solid fare consistently, every time I've been there over the years. The salsa is fantastic and literally everything else I've had here has been delicious, no exceptions. I've always stuck to burritos, tacos, chips/salsa, rellenos, etc. - basic stuff - and the margaritas are perfect. I've read reviews here suggesting the cheese isn't good, the food bland, huge portions, etc. and I seriously don't know what they're talking about. I love Mexican food and this is one of my favorite places in the country, hands down. Try the cinnamon iced tea if you're not drinking.

Pros: margaritas, food, service

Average at best, dismal atmosphere

by denver88

This is an old place in Denver, and you will get that feeling when you get there. Food is very average, not very pleasant on the presentation, and the cheese they use is like plastic. Also, not authentic in any way. Go to north Denver and seek out a real Mexican restaurant. This is bland food, over rated. I've tried this place several times over the years and can't see the attraction.

Best Salsa in Denver!

by idelle

As a bigtime salsa fanatic, I had to share with everyone that Blue Bonnet has the best salsa I've ever had - anywhere! Why it's great: 1. FLAVOR - this salsa is unrivaled in flavor, with chunks of onion and green chilis and what I believe is fresh cilantro bits in a wonderfly textured tomato sauce. 2. Unlimited refills (waitresses come around with pitchers of the amazing salsa and refill as many times as your chips call for it!) 3. Great chips to dip! Freshly made, and lightly salted, perfect!

The salsa is so good, I often drop by to pick up a to-go order of chips and salsa to take home and savor. If you like spicy, flavorful salsa, Blue Bonnet has the best salsa anywhere, hands down.

Pros: Inexpensive, Best Salsa, Great Mexican Food

The Crowds Love This Ghastly Food

by peakmecca

I'm amazed to read such bad reviews, yet see a place last for so long with consistent crowds. Ive also never seen such opinioned people when it comes to "what is good Mexican food." Personally I think The Blue Bonnet is really good above average Mexican food. This is the kind of place you can go to on a regular basis, good food, prices & one of the best environments. In fact, The Blue Bonnet is just getting better. I did not care for it too much a few years ago, but with a new menu, their salsa being greatly improved, along with home fried corn tortilla chips makes this a very suitable place. My personal favs: crispy chili relleno, shredded beef anything, or their light fluffy rice.

The Blue Bonnet is not fine gourmet, but it is real good Mexican food, served in huge portions in a great atmosphere.

Pros: Salasa, Rellenos, Atmosphere

Cons: , Over priced Margs.

Maybe Things Have Changed

by theairdog

I just went to the Blue Bonnet to meet some friends, and I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews. I was therefore, pleasantly surprised.

I ordered the combo platter - shredded beef burrito smothered green, crispy chicken relleno, and enchilada. The burrito was quite good. The green chili is definitely NOT Stokes.

They claim to make their own fresh enchilada red sauce, and I believe them. The relleno and enchilada were VERY good. The flavors of the green and red sauce were very distinct and flavorful. The meat did not look like cat food.

The place was fairly crowded on a Monday night, but the service was good - the girl hustled. I don't know if the people who gave this place a bad rating were too critical, had a bad experience or what, but I plan on going back. The Gold and Hornitos margs rock!

Pros: Food, Margs, Service

locals know

by maxamutt

I like to talk to natives of the area to find good food. We were referred to Blue Bonnet and it has become a family favorite. The food is consistently good. Atmosphere - well you know the food is good because they don't come for the decor. There are so many good things on the menu that is always a tough choice when it comes to ordering.

Pros: food, inexpensive , atmosphere
