If you are in Atlanta, GO HERE!

I went here and I am so glad that I did. Sometimes I think it is slightly useless to spend tons of money for memorial sites but then I went here. The church who grew up preaching in is here, the house he grew up in, and a museum for peace and justice are all located here. It is a great learning tool for families and educators and can help promote dialogue amongst the people in your group. I really liked the museum and would encourage anyone who can to go to this place. They also have a gift shop with some great material for teaching tolerance and about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his message.

The First Steps of the Civil Rights Movement Took Place Here

by Tamara B. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,627

Important places associated with Martin Luther King, Jr. and the American civil-rights movement line this half-mile stretch of Auburn Avenue - King's birth home and grave site, Ebenezer Baptist Church (where he worshipped and preached) and the Fire Station No. 6 Museum are the main historical attractions. Don't miss the visitor center, however. It offers spine-tingling exhibits, video displays and film presentations. Particularly poignant are eight life-sized statues of men and women, black and white, in a simulated Freedom March of the 1960s. You can stand among the figures and listen to the old spiritual songs. The experience is really quite mind boggling. You can take self-guided tours of all the buildings, except King's birth home, which requires preregistration at the visitor center. Tours usually fill up by noon so expect to wait several hours unless you sign up early. Your best bet is to sign up upon arriving and visit the other buildings in the meantime. The best times to visit are early on Sundays or on a weekday; October, November and December are the least busy months and summer is the busiest time of year.

This is a great place to pick up some history. At the Martin Luther King National Park you can see all kind of things related to Dr. King himself, his home, interesting facts, gravesite and it is truely amazing. It will def. touch your heart. Go with some one you love and sure this together.

This is a truly enlightening experience

by Jean w. D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,276

Here, you can visit Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birth home, his gravesite, and Ebenezer Church--the church that he was raised in and the church that his father was a pastor at. There is also a visitor center that shows a movie about Dr. King's life, and has information about Jim Crow and what it was like growing up in the segregated south. This place is really neat, but if you want to visit the Birth Home, go on an off-day and go really early because it is the only part of the museum that isn't self-guided. You have to sign up for a tour with a park ranger, and the tours book up fast and you can't make a reservation over the phone.
