Hurley's Saloon: Perfect for a pre-theatre meal near Broadway

by Amy P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,382

If you want to go to a place with a ton of character and great food, Hurley's is the place for you. It is quite impressive, with circular or square private booths with red walls like mini-rooms for privacy are perfect for quiet dinners and dates. The food is very tasy also as are the drinks. The price is average for a dinner in the theatre district. It's a really cool find. Anytime any of my family/ friends come into the city I make sure that we eat there. The front of the restaurant has a bar, if you are just looking for cocktails. The staff is probably fine with kids, but I would not take kids there. It's more of an adult locale.

PROS: Great food, close proximity to B-way theatres, no crowds

Walked Past 100 Places That Would Have Been Better

by VeryVeryDissapointed

We had done the chain restaurant thing in Times Square the night before and wanted a good only in NYC place and after walking all around Times Square/ Theatre District and passing literally 100 restaurants or more we settled on Hurley's. The waiter was really hard to understand and I'm pretty well travelled. We were given the upstairs menu even though we were seated in the downstairs dining room, where you can certainly hear patrons speaking bar room speak. We have a 9 year old. We were last to be seated at 7 45, only other table was leaving as we came in. Other spots in the neighborhood were packed as you looked through the window, you can't tell at Hurley's until your in the door.
Nothing on Upstairs menu for a kid and when the waiter finally came back and we asked for the other menu, he would not give us one and said you can have, fries, moz sticks, chicken tenders. Wife seemed to be able to understand him. I think he was afraid if we saw the other menu we would both opt for the $10 burger.
I went for the Swordfish with Mango sauce, baked potato and the Lobster Bisque. Wife got Chicken with Champagne Sauce and Mushroom & Bisque, Kid got sticks and Fries.
Back in the beginning as we were going in a smoker said "I always recomend the burgers" he said.
I guess that was really meant as a warning.
Bisque was OK if you were hungry (we were). Service the whole time was very spotty, we were never asked if we wanted another drink. Out came the swordfish. Just aweful. Not even remotely close to hot not even warm. Not sure it would have been good if they actually cooked it. Baked potato was hot enough, some cold spots, but thankfully edible as the fish was not.
Chicken was fair to midland. Ok for cook quality, no chef would put that out.
The mozzarella stick and fries were excellent.
BOTTOM LINE is from our experience Hurleys is probably a nice nieghborhood place for a few beers & a burger or wings with your friends but FINE DINING IT IS NOT.
Very edited 4 space

Pros: Pub Food

Cons: Not a Fine Dining Restaurant

I love Hurley Burgers, you definitely have to eat one on an empty stomach or else it will not fit. Good crowd during football games, only thing is the bartender is a Steelers fan, GO SKINS!!!!

I used to go to their original place at 49th St & 6th Ave (Rockerfeller Center).Hurley's is still good.Friendly staff and people.Service is great also. The food is great.Loved the wings and the Hurley Burger is just awesome.Whenever I get up to Manhattan,I always try to make a special stop there..When you are in Manhattan, make sure you stop by.You'll be glad you did.

Pros: Great Food & Service.Great Crowd

Cons: $5.00 is a little steep for a domestic pint of draft, but I understand its in Manhattan

Top bar staff

by Feckineedjut

I walked into this place a year and a half ago and continue to return as often as I can. The staff are excellent, friendly, courteous, professional & very accomodating. Excellent cocktails, very inventive shots, good beers, great food (Hurley's burger is a got to try). Crowd varies depending upon what time you go to visit, it's close to Times Sq so there's a transient tourist trade, there's a traders bank on the corner so there's a lively after work gathering and it plays most big games so always some fans congregating there. Sometimes lively, sometimes low-key, but always a pleasant experience...go along & say Hi to Ben in the evenings.

Pros: Burgers, staff, local crowd & atmosphere

Cons: Can sometimes get a little busy & toilet flush is a bit awkward in the gents

The food we ordered for dinner was great!! The service was exceptional!!

by crgilbert

My girlfriends & I were visiting NYC to celebrate our 50th B'Day's. We had passed by earlier in the week after a play. It looked like a cool place to go for a drink. 4 of us spent part of our evening there & had a "great" time!! Stephen, our bartender, made some great drinks!! We would recommend the "Cheesecake" & the "Livingroom". He makes a great Margarita as well~~ He made the evening a lot of fun & was willing to put up with a few "crazy" 50yr. olds!! We returned the next evening & enjoyed a "wonderful" dinner upstairs. The service was impeccable. Our food was great! We loved the decor! I wish we had a great bar/restaurant in San Diego Co. like Hurley's. Thanks for a great memory~ I recommend this bar/restaurant to everyone. Maybe next time they'll have a NASCAR race on~~

Pros: Stephen our bartender & our waiter's the following night. Their hats & juke box too!

Cons: non

A feel like home corner pub with better food

by domarra

I was very happy I made a visit to this wonderfull pub! I dropped in to watch the hockey game and have a couple pints and talk to the two pleasent staff. My wife joined me in Ny for the weekend so I brought her in for a drink and she also like the comfortable atmosphere and the friendly staff. With all the restaruants and pubs around we ended up coming back for dinner.
Thanks Hurley's staff as I'm sure I will become a bit of a regular over my next 5 months in NY

Pros: Lot's of TV placed comfortably for the bar and bar table patrons to see

Cons: Watch that nastsy little step when leaving :-)

Tourist trap in the Theatre District with warm beer and bad food. The servers are nice but other than that this place has no redeeming qualities.

Pros: service

Cons: drinks, food

Great Place To Go!!!

by camthom

This is the "Cheers" of New York, whether you've ever been there or not. Everyone is welcomed in as family. The food, drinks and service are clearly among the best in the city. During our meal, the management came over and checked on us and even bought us a round of drinks. While I'm not sure that this happens all the time-this is the kind of treatment that buys repeat business!

Pros: Service, Food, Ambience

Cons: none

Bravo!

by chanticleer148

On a recent Sunday afternoon, a friend and I accidently found this great restaurant on our way to see the pulitzer prize winning play DOUBT. This was the perfect quiet, relaxing, and delicious accompaniment to our afternoon of theater. The chicken pot pie is excpetiona, the cheeseburger huge and delictable, and the service professional wan warm. With so many poor experiences to be had in the theater district, is truly an excellent find! We will return many times for this oasis in mid-town.

by habenicht

Hurley's is like "Cheers" where everyone knows your name and they are ACTUALLY glad you came. Try the crunchy tuna, it is to die for. Try everything for that matter, it is all good. I have been going there since it opened and I can't get enough.

Pros: Staff, Food, Great Place

Cons: none
