This is one of the few bookstores in Manhattan where the salespeople are helpful and nice. Also, it holds a great selection of poetry books for aspiring poets or poetry lovers--stuff you can't really find anywhere else. The one negative thing is probably the size of the place. It can get cramped because of the small space and sometimes there are long lines at checkout. But the prices are decent and you'll find some great buys here.

St Marks Bookshop is a great independent book shop which has been serving the East Village community for the last 20+ years. They have great sections on womens issues, literary criticism and current politics. The staff is first rate and can answer just about any question about books.

St. Mark's Bookshop has been serving up books in the East Village for over 25 years. The selection is great and they carry a varied supply of books covering everything from leftist politics to womens issues to psychology. Of course they also have a great fiction section. I have shopped here dozens of times over the years and have always enjoyed my experiences here and in the old store, they moved to the present location a few years back. THe aleshelp has always been great to deal with. This shop is a very positive shopping experience.

St. Marks Bookstore has every kind of book. But either because of the people who own it and work in it, or because of its location and target market (or both), it seems to be the best in town when it comes to books about politics, socio-economics, critical studies of religion, feminism, anarchism and other radical subjects. Most of the time I can go in there with no idea of what book I want to buy, and walk out with a bag full of amazing books.

The staff is great too, very helpful and knowledgeable about the books they carry. A lot of times when I check out, the clerk tells me what he or she thought of the book I'm buying, or gives me suggestions as to what else I might like.

PROS: Great selection, friendly staff
CONS:

For almost 20 years, St. Mark's Bookshop has been the East Village's premier independent bookshop. Their specialties include Cultural Theory, Graphic Design, Poetry & Small Press Publishers, Film Studies and Foreign & Domestic Periodicals & Journals. Great for browsing, SMB usually has incredible music playing in-store. Human sized, yet easy to get lost in.

This is your best bet for books in the trend Saint Mark's district. They specialize in stuff from independent press sources, so you'll find many an obscure magazine, journal, and book there. Of course, they also have the standard variety of mainstream books at prices slightly higher than you'll find at Barnes and Nobles, but hey, you're supporting an independent business. And if you're in Saint Mark's you're probably into that.
